SENSOR Type, Style, Wiring Configurations Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD) Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD) are temperature sensors with the greatest degree of accuracy. Advantages
• Linear Output • Stable • Special Extension Wire Not Required • Cold Junction Compensation Not Required • More Accurate than a Thermocouple (T/C) • Repeatable
Disadvantages
• Limited Range -200° to +500°C (-392° to +932°F) • Slow Response • Self Heating Error • More Expensive than a Thermocouple • Less Rugged than a Thermocouple
Sensor Type: The TSE200 series and TSD200 series are wired wound ceramic design Pt100 sensors. The sensors are made of Platinum and have approximately 100 ohm resistance.
Sensor Style:
Single Element: Uses a single RTD element. Dual Element: Uses dual RTD elements. The second element is used as redundancy for a failure of the first element. (Available on 3-wire configurations only)
Wiring Configurations: TSE series and TSD series RTD’s are available with 3-wire or 4-wire wiring configurations. The 3-wire configuration is the most common. It uses a third wire to compensate for the resistance of the lead wires. The TSE / TSD RTD effectively have two circuits: the first circuit incorporates the RTD element and the second circuit measures the resistance of the two common wires. The resistance value of the second circuit is deducted from the resistance value of the first circuit by the YTA temperature transmitter. This yields the actual resistance across the RTD element by eliminating any influence caused by the lead-wire size or length. The 4-wire configuration goes further by compensating for each wire connected to the RTD by adding a fourth wire. This fourth wire creates three circuits. Two of the circuits are used for lead wire compensation. The YTA temperature transmitter averages the two compensation circuits and deducts that value from the overall resistance. This yields the actual resistance across the RTD element. This is the most accurate of the RTD wiring configurations. Thermocouples (T/C) Thermocouples (T/C) are the most widely used sensor for temperature measurement. Advantages
• Inexpensive • Fast Responding • Rugged • Tip Sensitive • Range -149° to +1,010°C (-300° to +1,850°F) • Multi-Point Sensing • Vibration Resistance
Disadvantages
• Non-Linear • Least Stable • Sensitivity is Low • Low Voltage Output • Requires Thermocouple Extension Wire • Accuracy Degrades over Time

TSE/TSD sensor assembly Temperature Ranges by Sensor Type THERMOWELL Process Connection, Style, Materials Thermowells are sleeves of metal that hold the sensor in the process medium. The thermowell protects the sensor from the medium, but does not affect the temperature measurement. Process Connections The thermowell provides the process connection for the temperature sensor. The TSE series offers Flanged (up to 1200# ASME), Socket Weld, or Threaded process connection and sizes ½”, ¾”, 1.0”, 1.5” and 2.0”. Thermowell Style The TSE series offers tapered, straight, or stepped thermowells. As a general guide, tapered wells provide greater stiffness for the same sensitivity. The higher strength-to-weight ratio provides these wells with higher natural frequency than the equivalent length straight well, which allows operation at higher fluid velocities. Stepped thermowells offer better response time to temperature fluctuations. Thermowell Materials The TSE series offers thermowells in 316 / 316L Stainless Steel, Hastelloy C-276, and Monel. Other materials are available through direct quote from Burns Engineering.
Sample Thermowell Process Connections / Thermowell Styles. Approvals TSE Series and TSD Series have an optional FM agency approval available. When attachment of an FM sensor is required, it must be attached to an FM Explosion-proof YTA110, YTA310, or YTA320; or an Explosion-proof connection head (Connection Head code: 05A, 05E, or 14S) Specifications Series 100 Industrial Thermocouples (TSD100 and TSE100) The TSD100 and TSE100 feature a proven, rugged thermocouple design that utilizes mineral insulated bare wires in a metal sheath and special limits thermocouple wire (per ANSI MC 96.1) to ensure reliable performance.

Series 200 Wire Wound RTDs (TSD200 and TSE200) The Series 200 (TSD200 and TSE200) is an “off-the-shelf” RTD that meets real word conditions for extended periods of time. Its unique design and construction features yield high durability without affecting accuracy. Burns Engineering’s proprietary CS (Coil Suspension) element is constructed with a high purity platinum wire that is coil wound to minimize stress and assure accurate readings over long periods of time. Each coil is fully suspended in a high purity ceramic insulator and surrounded by a ceramic powder with a binder additive. The CS element enhances vibration and shock resistance without interfering with the coils ability to expand or contract. High strength platinum alloy leads are large in size to improve durability and insure that the RTD does not fail in tough applications. The sheath is constructed using a Burns Engineering proprietary manufacturing technique that forms a metallurgical bond between the element leads and the internal sheath leads, virtually eliminating lead wire shorts; and, when encapsulated with compacted ceramics, assures high durability and fast response time over the life on the sensor.

Series 300 Thin Film RTDs (TSD300 and TSE300) While Series 200 wire wound RTDs are extremely durable, Series 300 thin films RTDs offer even more durability for extra rugged conditions. However, Series 200, because of their intrinsic design, will offer higher stability and accuracy than the Series 300. Series 300 is the best choice for heavy-duty applications, where durability and economy are priorities. The Series 300 uses a Thin Film Platinum RTD element that is encapsulated by special potting material to protect it from shock, vibration, moisture, and lead-wire breakage. A seal around the element and lead wire junctions completely seals out moisture and adds mechanical protection to the junction. The lead wires are supported with a high purity ceramic powder to eliminate any movement that could cause damage to the element. A second seal is used to prevent moisture and other contaminates from entering the sheath.
Element Resistance: 100 ohms at 0°C nominal Temperature Coefficient of Resistance: 0.00385 ohms/ohm/OC nominal Accuracy: Available with Accuracy of ±0.10% of resistance at 0°C with typical alpha accuracy of 0.00385 ±0.0000135 Ohms/ohm/°C.
