Resources •ThreesheetsofA4paper,foldedinhalfandstapledtocreatea‘scrapbook’•Gardencentremagazinesandbrochures•Resourcestomaketheprotectorsfrome.g.chickenwire,plasticsheeting,emptyplasticbottles•Toolsneededtomaketheprotectorse.g.scissors,wirecutters,protectivegloves•Digitalcamera•Dictaphone

Teaching activityIntroductionAsktheclassto…•Discussthedangerssaladleavesmightencounterwhenplantedoutdoors.•Workinginpairs,decidehowtheycanbeprotected.•WatchtheSOWanimationsontheBBCDigInwebsite.

ActivityInvestigate•Investigatewhatplant-protectingproductsarealreadyonthemarket,usingmagazines, brochuresandtheinternet.•Cutoutorprintpicturesofexistingproductstostickinpupils’scrapbook.Labelthemain featuresofeachproduct,includingthematerialitismadefromandanyspecificdesignpoints.

Design•Designaplantprotectorusingfindingsfromtheinvestigatestage.Gettheclasstothink carefullyaboutwhatmaterialstouse,thefinisheddesignandhowitwillbemade.•Measuretheareatobecoveredbythenewproductanddrawthedesigntoscale.•Createadetaileddrawingwithalistofresources,equipmentandprocedurestogointhe scrapbook.•Suggestalternativewaysofmakingtheprotectorincasetheoriginalneedsfurtherdevelopment.

Make•Maketheplantprotectorsfollowingthedesignplans.•Takephotosofeachoftheproductionstagestorecordinthescrapbook.•Conductinterviewswithfellowpupilsaboutthesuccessesandchallenges.Theseinterviews couldberecordedorfilmed.

Evaluate

•Evaluatehoweffectivethefinishedproduceisforitsrole.Getthepupilstothinkaboutthe goodpointsandwhatthingstheywouldchange.

•Recordtheresultsinthescrapbook.Pupilscouldcreateavideodiarydocumentingtheproject.
