WHO WE ARE MMSD is a regional government agency that provides water reclamation and flood management services for about 1.1 million customers in 28 communities in the Greater Milwaukee area. We serve 411 square miles that encompass all, or segments of, six watersheds.
Established by state law, the District is governed by 11 commissioners.
Besides our core responsibilities, we also handle water quality research, household hazardous waste collection, pharmaceutical collection, industrial waste monitoring, laboratory services, planning and engineering services, and Milorganite®—a fertilizer trusted by professionals for more than 80 years.
Message from theExecutiveDirector.
We’ve invested $4 billion over
the past three decades on MMSD’s regional sewers, deep tunnels and water reclamation facilities, the stuff we call grey infrastructure. And it’s paying off. Fewer sewer overflows have resulted in cleaner rivers and a cleaner Lake Michigan. This cleaner environment has resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars of increased property values in the region.
But we are not done. We can take even greater strides by bolstering our tunnels, sewers and facilities with green initiatives that help manage rain and melting snow where it falls, keeping it out of our sewers. Everyone can “do” green infrastructure. It can be as simple as installing a rain barrel or building a beautiful rain garden. THE FOUR STAGES TO CLEANING WASTEWATER
SCREENING Large and small objects are removed, like towels, sand and gravel.
PRIMARY CLARIFICATION Grease and oil float to the top of large settling tanks. Solids sink to the bottom.
BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT Microscopic organisms, “bugs,” break down organic material.
DISINFECTION Disease causing organisms are killed by chemicals that are then neutralized before the water is returned to Lake Michigan.

4The bugs we use for cleaning wastewater are actually famous! When they’re done doing their jobs in the water reclamation facilities, we dry them out and turn them into Milorganite®—a fertilizer that’s been trusted and used by lawn and gardening experts for more than 80 years. You can even see Milorganite® in the movie Caddyshack.
