GEOSS Community Portal Recommendations
Team Report
Contents
• Purpose of Activity• Team Members• Progress to Date
– Information sharing– Use case development
• Outline of paper• Delivery format of document and schedule
Purpose/Membership of Team
• Develop a paper entitled “GEOSS Recommendations for Community Portals”– Originated as a action from GEO Sprint to the Summit – Need reinforced at the recent GEOSS Vision and Architecture
Meeting at ESA/ESRIN– Recommendations to build upon AIP and other experience
• Team members drawn from those who have expressed interest in the topic or their nominees
• Team has architects/engineers associated with the development of the GCI, AIP participants and representatives from GEOSS user communities

Initial Ideas on Purpose of Paper
• To express an understanding of the general needs of the user communities that are developing portals to GEOSS services
• To explain the way the GCI can address those needs• To instruct and assist portal developers in utilizing the GCI
components• To engage the various user communities in sustaining and
enhancing GEOSS capabilities• To leverage community resources of the GEOSS
Information System in addressing access, processing and workflow capabilities
Progress to Date
• Kick-off telecon held on 4 November– Introduction of members– General discussion of purpose/scope of the activity
• Subsequent telecons focused on information sharing– Energy Portal – Lionel Menard– Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks – Jan Rene Larsen– GEOSS Discovery/Access Broker – Stefano Nativi– GEOSS Portal Overview/Demo – Guido Colangeli– Portals of the Water SBA – David Arctur– Portals of Citizens Observatories (future) – Arne J. Berre
• Purpose and Scope of the paper and Community Portal Use Cases currently under discussion
Discussions on Purpose and Scope • Paper should include community needs/requirements independent of
GEOSS architecture• Paper should address a variety of use cases for community interactions
with GEOSS– Multiple community portal types– User clients and helper applications
• Communities will want to access GEOSS and non-GEOSS resources• Paper should describe and benefit from previous experience of AIPs and
other efforts• Recommendations are non-binding but paper should describe benefits of
compliance• IN-03 consolidated requirements for GEO Web Portal will be translated to
recommendations as appropriate
Discussion of Use Cases
• Paper will use full description of GEOSS architecture to set context but use cases will consider subsequent evolution and be based on implemented components
• Use cases will present generalized Community Portal types based on existing or planned capabilities of various groups
• Recommendations will be developed to maximize the benefit of each portal type to both the target community and the GEOSS user community at large

Portal Out to Community Resources
• Simple link from GEOSS Portal to Community Portal• Community portal should be registered as GEOSS resource• Multiple examples in current GEOSS Portal• Lowest level of interaction with GEOSS• Could be first step toward closer integration and interaction
between Community and GEOSS
