The comedy film genre belongs to the groups of films that evoke laughter/humor from the audience. 'Romantic Comedy' is the one of the most important category in cinema, and preferred by many. Romantic Comedy films fall into two main sub-groupings; the comedian-led film, structured through gags and sketches or the comedy situation film with a more reasoned narrative.
Romantic Comedy'- is a popular genre, targeted at women and couples, especially in the 25-35 age group and teenagers age from 13-18. A Romantic comedy is a hybrid genre where a romantic plot emerges and is shown in a comedic way. The film is broken down into three different parts for example:
-A Guy and girl see each other.
-Something happens which leads to a break up.
-As the film moves on they will realise they were meant to be together/try and get back together again and resolve there differences.
Most Romantic comedies end with a happy ending. However it is becoming
increasingly popular to end on a more real life ending. The audience
anticipates this because things work out the way we want them to. The
theme of a Romantic comedy is based on love and fate. These are the
themes that dominant in the plot. Other themes like tragedy or loss are
present in romantic comedy. The main characters are always made to be
opposites whether in social class, interest, personality etc; this is one of the
things they must tackle in order to stay together. The audience don’t take
any side of the two main characters, because they are introduced as
likeable people we can relate to or people we can sympathise and relate to
as the film goes on.
Lighting and soundtracks are specifically chosen to help reflect on the
meaning of the emotions used in certain parts of the film. We don’t find dark
lighting in romantic comedy films because it changes the mood of the film
making it dull and less cheerful. Songs like pop or hip pop are dominant in
romantic comedy as it’s aimed at audience who would already know the
songs. Soundtrack must always relate to what’s happening in the film as it
assists the storyline.
As we brainstormed ideas for our film we original decided doing something
that our target audience aged 12-28 can relate too. We decided this
relation will attract more viewers and with more viewers our the standard of
our film needed to be set to its highest ability. We wanted something to
relate to both sides of the gender which ultimately again will increase our
audience. This lead us to choose a concept which everyone can relate to
themselves especially the age group of 12 to 28 as many young couple find
themselves panicking on a date. We added the stereotypical habits of a
teenager to our actor Bob and Lara to be the cunning one making the boy
run around for her. We added both romance and comedy into our film as
romantic comedy is the most popular genre today.
Bridget Jones is a romantic
film about her becoming
uncomfortable in her
relationship with Mark Darcy.
Apart from discovering that
he's a conservative voter, she
has to deal with a new
boss, strange contractor, and
the worst vacation of her life.
Crazy Stupid Love is another
film we watch, however this
films about A middle-aged
husband's life changes
dramatically when his wife
asks him for a divorce. He
seeks to rediscover his
manhood with the help of a
newfound
friend, Jacob, learning to
pick up girls at bars
'Teen comedy' - often set in high school or a house party. It’s based around young sexual adventure and conflicts with the
law or parents.
'Social comedy' - 'situational comedies' based on the different class conflict.
'Gross-out comedy' – one of the most successful which could
involve different comedies such as romantic comedy but it involved more outrageous gags.
