ROLLFAST GRAN FONDO BIKE RIDE TRIES A NEW ROUTEWriter / Beth Taylor

Changing it up from last year’s Geist route, this year’s Rollfast Gran Fondo ride will take place in Carmel on September 14. Whether a weekend enthusiast or a seasoned competitor, any cyclist who is at least 12 years old can participate in this fun, mass-start ride.
“Everyone rolls out together, but it’s not a race,” said event organizer Ma Tanner. He explains the ride is for Lycra- and cargo-short-wearing participants alike. “If you can ride around your neighborhood a few times, you can handle this ride.”
e three routes start near Union Brewing Company, go past Cicero, west toward Lebanon, and south through Zionsville. Beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m., the routes are clearly marked, and course marshals are on hand to provide assistance.
“We’ve provided three supported routes: the Piccolo, a 25-mile route, the Medio, which
is the 65-mile route, and the Gran—the longest—at 100 miles,” said Tanner. “ is year, we have more rest stops to provide support for riders,” said Tanner. “ e Medio and the Gran have six stops, and the piccolo has four.” e last stop is a sweet stop ve miles from the nish for an extra boost of energy to help riders cross the nish line.
Cyclists can challenge themselves to complete the race in a certain amount of time. Each cyclist receives an entry number to a ach to his or her handlebars. A microchip is located on the underside of the number. When the rider passes the start line, the ride time begins; when the rider crosses the nish line, it stops. Rider times are posted in real time on the event’s website.
“Last year’s event drew participants from all over Indiana and neighboring states—a few came from London. We had about 300 cyclists participate last year, and we’re hoping to grow to around 500,” Tanner said.
Choosing the VIP entry option gets you extra pampering on the day of the event. VIPs receive reserved parking, VIP tent access, and unlimited food and drinks for the day. ree top professional cyclists, George Hincapie, Christian Vande Velde, and Tom Danielson are scheduled to appear at the event.
Following the ride, cyclists and families can participate in the free festival. e Union Brewing Company is adding to the fun atmosphere by giving each participant a free beer or so drink.

On any Wednesday night during the summer months, you’ll find classic cars parked on Main Street in Fortville. It’s called a “Cruise-In” and it attracts over 70 classic cars, trucks and roadsters to a town that is also a throwback in time.
“These three-story brick buildings provide some good shade for us,” said George Wanamaker, a Geist resident. “We also need ice cream, and Indulge [Ice Cream Parlor] has some really good ice cream.”
Wanamaker, who frequents several cruise-ins with his 1963 Chevrolet Impala, was reading the Geist Community Newsletter back in the summer of 2012 when he saw an article about the new Indulge Ice Cream Parlor. After visiting, he contacted the Town of Fortville, and a grassroots volunteer group, the Fortville Action Committee, was founded to bring life back to the town.
Theresa Werking, one of the founding board members of the Fortville Action Committee, recalls that summer. “At the time, all we really had downtown was Indulge. Since that time, we’ve added
more restaurants, stores, bars and even benches for the cruisers to sit on.”
Bringing people, who in turn bring dollars, to Main Street in Fortville has helped the Mayberry-esque town grow. In the last few months, 5 de Mayo Mexican Restaurant, Sunrise Donuts and R-Smokehouse BBQ have both opened to an anxious Fortville following. And as for the cruise-in, Wednesday night business is booming, thanks to the car enthusiasts and spectators descending on the town.
“Wednesdays are now one of our busiest nights of the week,” explained Jonathan Andrew Hendrix, co-owner of Indulge Ice Cream Parlor & Café. On any given Wednesday night, Hendrix explains that they will do as much business as they do during other local events like July 4th, Bastille Day or even Winterfest.
Car buffs from all around start arriving around 3:30-4 p.m., picking out their parking spots along Main Street. They pop their trunks, pull out lawn chairs, photos or other memorabilia, and sit and talk with other car owners or spectators just walking by. Wanamaker says that the cruise-ins are therapy for classic car buffs like himself.

“We go to these cruise-ins to talk about our cars, trade parts, talk to each other, sell parts, seek advice and even seek help,” he said with a laugh.
To that end, every car has a story. Walking around and striking up conversations with the owners is the highlight of the cruise-in for a non-classic car owner. Parked in front of Indulge was a beautiful 1960 Corvette owned by John Rash. He purchased the car in 1968 for $200 and drove it for 20 years. Then, in 1988, he decided to turn it into a show car. “It’s won over 900 trophies at every car show you can imagine,” Rash explained.
Today, he visits Fortville on Wednesdays because of his family connection to the area. As it turns out, his relatives owned farmland in Fortville, so he’s always bumping into cruise-in fans who have a family story to share.
“The cruise-in brings a lot of people to town on a weekly basis—new people who have never been to Fortville before. It’s definitely great for economic development and it shows,” added Werking.
So before the summer ends, make a point to head east to Fortville on a Wednesday night and take in the rebirth of the train town with dinner, drinks, some shopping and, of course, ice cream.
John Rash stands with his 1960 Corvette, a show car that has won over 900 trophies since 1988 . Crystal & Jonathan Andrew Hendrix, co-owners of Indulge Ice Cream Parlor & Café, have seen business boom on Wednesday nights thanks to the cruise-in.

Golfers will have an opportunity to enjoy a day of golf at Ironwood Golf Course in Fishers, while contributing to the work of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Called Eddy’s Inaugural Golf Classic, the 18-hole event is sponsored by Eddy’s Restaurant at the Geist Marina. Heather Foster and her husband Scott own and operate Eddy’s. Cosponsor is T. A. Smith.
“We are looking to raise $20,000, so this is big,” said Heather Foster, event organizer. In addition to a day of fun and making a contribution to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, golfers will receive lunch, dinner, beverages and a commemorative golf polo shirt. Prizes will be given for first-, second- and third-place winners.
“It’s open to anyone. You don’t have to be a pro,” Foster said. “If people can’t participate, they can still donate. Most people who play
in golf classics are just looking to have fun and contribute to a great cause.”
According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society website, its mission is to: “Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life for patients and their families.” All of these ailments are forms of blood cancer. The society uses “at least 74 cents of every dollar raised for cancer programs,” including research and assistance to patients and their families.

Heather Foster has a personal reason for wanting to help the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. “My mom has non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” she said.
In addition to organizing the golf classic, Heather Foster is in her third season of participation in Team in Training, known as TNT. This is a fundraising arm of the society that raises money through endurance sports.
This year she will compete in a 70.3-mile duathlon, an event featuring running and bicycling. “This is the biggest thing I’ve ever tackled when it comes to fundraising. My charming husband has been a great resource,” she said.

Writer / Hans Maldonado with assistance from Dr. Joe Lauer Photographer / Eric Meyer
Once a year, Optimus Park in Broad Ripple plays host to a spectacular gathering of both craft beers and craft beer lovers in the form of the Indiana Microbrewers Festival. Located a few blocks north of Broad Ripple Ave. near the Indianapolis Art Center, this event becomes better organized every year. Lines for food, beer, and lavatories were as minimal as can be expected at a beer festival with approximately 5,000 people in attendance. Both Dr. Lauer and myself were in attendance, as usual. While Dr. Lauer found some new and interesting local/regional breweries, I must admit that it was difficult to ignore the tried and true breweries I know and love. It is also nice to know someone who can walk onto the back line and get beer more quickly.
JOE: For those who make it beyond Indianapolis, there are some interesting new breweries worthy of attention. 18TH STREET BREWERY (Gary, IN) got their brewer from PIPEWORKS BREWING (Chicago, IL), which was named the best new brewery of 2013 according to ratebeer.com. Grapefruit Dead Imperial IPA and Hunter’s Double Milk Stout were both quite good.
BARE HANDS BREWING (Granger, IN) was serving a Thai p.a.(sic) with hints of lime, ginger, and tea. It was quite interesting, and their other IPAs and Pale Ales were good, as well.
EVIL CZECH BREWERY (Mishawaka, IN) poured a Bohemian (that means Czech-style as opposed to German) Pilsner that took me right back to Prague. Pilsner
may seem boring to some, but good representations of the style are not exactly abundant in Indiana.
ZWANZIGZ BREWERY (Columbus, IN) served a golden blueberry ale that was full of blueberry flavor and aroma and yet was incredibly dry and refreshing.
HANS: I had that blueberry ale, and it was indeed delicious. For those who think fruit beer means sweet and cloying, read: It does not have to!
JOE: From DANNY BOY (soon to be open in The Village of West Clay in Carmel, IN), there was a solid black IPA. NEW DAY MEADERY (Fountain Square) does not make beer, but their mead ranges from sweet and fruity through bone dry. They even make a mead with hops! Imperial Raspberry Breakfast Magpie was an outstanding mead.
SCARLET LANE BREWERY (McCordsville, IN) won a Brewer’s Cup award for their Vivian Red IPA, which showed as well as advertised over the weekend. Their coffee coconut stout was dry and balanced.
HANS: My friend Leah from TAXMAN (Bargersville, IN) was pouring a Belgian Dubbel that was bone dry and incredibly attenuated (this means that there was no leftover sugar after yeast finishes its meal), as I have come to expect from this brewery. When people think that Belgian style beer is either too sweet or too syrupy, it is usually because of left over sugar, or under-attenuation. The Dubbel had the typical
raisiney character of a Dubbel, but it was truly multidimensional in its flavor.
UNION BREWING (Carmel, IN) focuses on cask-conditioned beer (meaning that the beer is carbonated in the keg) served from traditional hand-drawn beer engines (handpull). I’ve never visited England (home of cask-conditioning), but tasting the Monon Mild, with its grassy hops and soft mouth-feel, from Union is probably the next best thing.
BARLEY ISLAND (Noblesville,IN) was serving a Saison (Belgian) that was crisp, dry, and refreshing, and yet was packing around 8% abv. Owner/Brewmaster Jeff Eaton is a more-than-competent brewer and a highly regarded judge.
BRUGGE BRASSERIE (Indianapolis, IN) rarely fails to bring a little sourness, and their Diamond Kings of Heaven 2014 did not disappoint. While the exact recipe varies from year to year, Owner/Brewmaster Ted Miller had been using the same wine barrel for some time, and it is populated with the appropriate microfauna to produce the lactic acidity for which Diamond Kings is known. After witnessing inexperienced festivalgoers spitting out Diamond Kings at a previous festival, there is always a password required to sample Diamond Kings. When it comes to sour beer—If you know, then you know.
On the American side of beer styles, Ted Miller also produces beer under the Outliers label. From Outliers, there was a strong Blonde Ale brewed with botanicals, Chinese rice

wine yeast, and then aged in a brandy barrel for about a month. This beer had stunning complexity and a very refreshing quality.
JOE: That was also one of my favorite beers this year!
HANS: TRITON BREWING (Indianapolis, IN) produced two incredibly unique and outstanding beers for the festival. French Toast Stout and French Toast Stout with Strawberries could not have been more aptly named and either one would be a showstopper on most occasions.
I have said before that BIER BREWERY (Indianapolis, IN) makes the best and only pumpkin ale that anyone should drink. For the festival, they came with a barrel-aged Pumpkin Porter worthy of a best-in-show award.
UPLAND BREWING (Indianapolis, IN) came with a bunch of their Lambics, of which I was only able to taste the 2014 Peach Lambic, poured by the brewer himself, Caleb Staton. His Lambics have gotten better and better over the years.
BLACK ACRE BREWING (Indianapolis, IN) was pouring Bitter Life Coffee IPA. It was a blend of American IPA and locally roasted coffee, the result of which was slightly citrusy from the hops and roasty and slightly bitter from the coffee.
TOW YARD BREWING (Indianapolis, IN) came in strong with their Horsepower Double Pale Ale, which is mildly citrusy but restrained enough in its bitterness that it could be a crossover beer for those hop-haters out there. It hides its 8+abv very well. Owner Mike Deweese also brought some gems from his cellar, which are certainly not available anywhere other than in his company, and rest assured, the right beer improves over time just like the finest of wines. I tasted 12-year-old World Wide Stout from Dogfish Head and 10-year-old Double Bastard from Stone. And remember that 2004 Beast from Avery that you thought would never mellow? Well, it did, and it was pretty good. Thank you, Mr. Deweese!
TIN MAN BREWING COMPANY (Evansville, IN) was serving a stout that had been aged in a Maker’s Mark barrel, and it was outstanding.
This festival has gotten better with each passing year. The available space has more than doubled since 2007, while the attendance is still pretty much the same. It rarely feels crowded, and there are plenty of
food and washing facilities. Thankfully, we dodged the 90+ degree heat that is usually a factor at the Microbrewers Festival. Joe and I agree that it would not be possible to taste even half of what is typically available at this event, so please understand that this article is inherently incomplete. Just know that this is the premier beer event in Indianapolis each and every year.

I’ve had back pain off and on most of my life, not debilitating…that is, until about the age of 40. The pain eventually became unbearable. With a very demanding job and little time to focus on my health, I sought the help of a few doctors. This is when I discovered most doctors want to pat you on the hand and tell you to “learn to live with it!” Reality is…you have “lived with it” and if you weren’t at the breaking point you wouldn’t be in their offi ce!
I began to wonder if I could bear to live the rest of my life in this much pain…was it possible or even worth it? Dr. Hall is unaware, but he probably saved my life…I was very close to giving up.
After the fi rst appointment at Midwest Pain & Spine, I knew I was somewhere special.
Suddenly there was hope and an actual plan! Dr. Hall went straight to work to fi nd the source of the pain, which actually turned out to be a birth deformity. He discovered the source of pain that no other doctor ever took the time to. Then Dr. Hall worked with me to fi nd the most effective treatment for my particular spine issues.
Now my pain is managed. I still work too hard, but now I’m not miserable…plus I live a more active lifestyle, which is a much unexpected blessing.
Thanks, Dr. Hall and wonderful staff, for giving me my life back!

It was a tough week for Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs. On July 5, IMPD Officer Perry Renn was killed in the line of duty—gunned down with an assault rifle while responding to a report of shots fired in a neighborhood. Just a day removed from Officer Renn’s interment in Crown Hill Cemetery, Riggs, who lives in Admirals Pointe, met with Geist Community Newsletter (GCN) for a conversation about crime—what the problems are and what to do about them.
As Indianapolis public safety director, Troy Riggs works closely with Mayor Greg
Ballard, and controls a massive department: 3,200 employees, and police, fire and emergency medical services that account for 85 percent of the city’s budget. The 48-year-old Riggs is a Louisville native, a former beat cop and detective, and he most recently worked in city management and law enforcement in Corpus Christi, Texas. He lives with his wife Kara and sons David and Caleb in Admirals Pointe.
GCN: Why did you choose to live in Lawrence Township?TR: Our real estate agent said you need to go look around the Geist area. The first home we found, we fell in love with it. It’s such a quiet, peaceful area. There’s always
someone running, walking, talking to someone or dropping by to say hello. I’ve got a bike and I find myself riding out in the middle of a cornfield, and to me that’s just real peaceful—just riding around the lake.
GCN: What can people do to help, and get involved?TR: Let’s say somebody has a passion for [prisoner] re-entry; somebody has a passion for homelessness; somebody has a passion for young people. They’ve always wanted to get involved. Simply call in to my office, or email me at [email protected] and we will send you the list of those [social services] providers that we’ve put our stamp of approval on and what they do.
“A LOT OF CITIES HAVE GIVEN UP ON CERTAIN AREAS, CERTAIN STREETS. WE’RE NOT GOING TO DO THAT IN
INDIANAPOLIS. BUT WE AS A GROUP NEED TO SAY WE’RE NOT GOING TO STAND FOR VIOLENCE ANYWHERE.”
The Riggs family chose to live in the Geist area after moving from Corpus Christi, Texas in 2012. Sons (from left) David & Caleb along with wife Kara love living in Admirals Pointe.

GCN: What are we to learn from Officer Renn’s sacrifice?TR: In a year and a half, we’ve had nine officers shot—two fatally. Twenty or so others have been fired upon. That’s because they are in there in those tough areas [of the city]. That should be scary to all of us because that means individuals have no problem shooting at a police officer. At the end of last year, I gave a speech and talked about us not being able to be apathetic about our city. A lot of cities have given up on certain areas, certain streets. We’re not going to do that in Indianapolis. But we as a group need to say we’re not going to stand for violence anywhere. And what I need, quite frankly, from individuals who are in the suburbs, is if you care about your city…and look at it like it’s a family—part of our family is hurting. We have young people who have no future, and they want a future and we need to support them. People say that the suburbs and certain areas around Indianapolis don’t want to help. I don’t think they realize how they can help.
GCN: Is there a cause and effect between people stepping up and doing something, and holding the line against crime?TR: Not only holding the line; I think we can dramatically reduce it. Just because you’re poor doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to have a life of crime. I grew up in a very poor area. I saw want. But I don’t understand not having a mom and dad that’s taking care of [their kids]; I don’t understand being left at home by yourself and fending for yourself; I don’t understand some of these parents who abandon their kids. We can’t say it’s okay not to raise your child. We need to hold people accountable. When you add poverty, lack of hope, lack of food, lack of money, low education, schools that are failing—that is a recipe for violence. It just is, and we can’t be apathetic about that anymore.
GCN: Are you more psychologist, or law enforcement official?TR: I think it’s a balance of both.
You have to fight crime not just by locking people up. You have to stay in areas long-term, and you have to put enough officers on the street so they’re getting to know citizens, so that when a citizen picks up the phone and calls the police, they’re calling an officer they know. That’s how we turn the tide.
Reducing crime has a lot to do with officers on the street and putting people in the right places. But the biggest crime prevention that we can move on, long-term, is if one person gets involved in the life of another person who’s in danger of going into crime and turns him around. It breaks the cycle.

GCN: What about racial a itudes and crime?TR: I think people want to say it’s a race problem. I think it is a socio-economic problem more so. It doesn’t ma er if you’re white, Hispanic, or African-American: if you have those [challenges] that I just talked about, that adds up to issues. And we’re seeing that across society. e scary part is that even in the suburbs and some of the wealthy areas, there’s a growing issue with heroin. One of the reasons young people there are being targeted is they have disposable income. Heroin is permeating all through society. We’re going to see more and more of that and in areas that you’re not anticipating. Anyone who thinks our schools and our city don’t have a heroin problem, they just haven’t paid a ention.
GCN: You’re saying heroin is a problem in schools like Lawrence Central, Lawrence North, Fishers, or Hamilton Southeastern?TR: I would say there certainly are kids in those schools using heroin. And the reason I know that? We had a community conversation at St. Vincent Hospital on the north side. We had over 100 people. All had a connection with heroin. Some had children in the hospital being treated for heroin. About half were from outside Indianapolis, the other half from the suburbs. I don’t think we had anyone from the inner city. at’s where we are.
GCN: Are you hopeful about the future?TR: I am hopeful. I’m seeing the community talk more about social issues. at’s a good thing. When I got here, they were talking about police need to do this and that. But I think people have a be er understanding—that people are starting to see what they can do and what their part of it is. And they’re understanding that it’s social. If you compare statistics, all major violent crime dropped 10 percent in June from May. So we’re starting to make a di erence. What we have to remember is we’re going to
have some good months, and we’re going to have some bad weekends. Let’s do the policing we have to do, but let’s also deal with the social issues. Remember, we didn’t get here over the last two years. ese are decades-long issues. We need to nd ways not to be apathetic about it and just say,
‘ at’s the way it’s going to be.’ It doesn’t have to be that way.

Sadly, summer break is coming to an end, but the back to school fashion fun is just beginning. Although students will soon be hi ing the books, that doesn’t mean they have to hit the mall to nd the ho est trends. Fishers residents only have to look right in their backyard for a fresh new local boutique—Lily & Sparrow. is boutique, owned and operated by two 20-something sisters, prides itself on promoting and accenting natural beauty by o ering quality trends at a ordable prices.
With Lily & Sparrow’s budget-friendly prices no cause for ba le with your teen, let’s talk modesty. Yes, modesty, the dreaded word that strikes resistance into almost every teen girl’s heart. So o en this term conjures up images of being covered from head to toe and devoid of any personality or style. is doesn’t have to be the case. Modest fashions don’t have to be anti-mainstream. It o en just means being more creative with the styling. Here are two great looks from Lily & Sparrow to demonstrate how easily this can be achieved.
BACK TO SCHOOL TRENDS AT AFFORDABLE PRICES
We don’t want to forget about the boys! Vardagen is just the answer for teen guys looking for ECLECTIC tanks, t-shirts and hoodies. This emerging brand is also located in the heart of Fishers and is strong on design. They print everything themselves on quality, hand-selected garments. Their styles are perfect for guys who don’t want to look like they’re trying too hard but also don’t want to get lost in the masses. Vardagen also has fashions for women and children. The t-shirt modeled is unique with its HIPSTER FLAIR and true American pride—perfect for standing out in a crowd.
This look is BOHO CHIC using dark skinny jeans, a long neutral tank and a beautiful sleeveless open-front crocheted vest. To complete this look, a purple and turquoise STATEMENT NECKLACE that isn’t too over-the-top for school was added to make the outfi t pop.
Another look combines a simple summer fl oral dress with a cropped denim and lace vest. Because dresses are so comfortable, they are perfect for all-day wear. The vest gives this outfi t a LITTLE EDGE and it’s another great piece that can be used YEAR-ROUND. For this ensemble, a shorter gold Aztec-inspired necklace was paired with a longer mint and brown lucite statement chain. Sweet little neutral ballet fl ats like the ones paired with both outfi ts are wardrobe staples as they continue to be a fashionable alternative to heels.

Boaters on Geist Reservoir have long had favorite channels and coves to cruise, but one of the most popular spots may be the notorious “Cocktail Cove” in the Springs of Cambridge neighborhood. On any sunny weekend, you may see boaters tie up together, crank up the music, open the beverages and let it all hang out—sometimes literally.
In 2009, the infamous cove was the subject of a Dateline NBC TV special called “Flying High on Cocktail Cove,” which was the story of how financier Marcus Schrenker, who lived on the cove, tried to fake his own death in a plane over Florida.
All the attention and partying has drawn complaints from neighbors over the years and today police patrol the cove regularly to help control the noise level and alcohol consumption.
Whether its patrols on the cove or just the search for uncharted territory, some boaters are looking for something new—and discovering it. Just north of Cocktail Cove there is a 35+-acre, 10-foot deep cove that opened in 2011 when a dredging project was completed.
Dubbed “Kiddie Cove” and “Juicebox Cove,” the new area with quiet water and a grassy shoreline is attracting family boaters who want to drop anchor and let the kids swim. One boater told me it’s a quieter cove that feels much safer for swimming, with fewer boats and without police circling the boats “like sharks looking for the next meal,” as in Cocktail Cove.
The Bennett family was the first to build on the new cove and says, so far, boaters have been fairly quiet and they hope it stays that way. “Nobody likes stereos blasting in coves—not homeowners or other boaters trying to have a good time on the lake,” says Bennett, who used to live across the street from Cocktail Cove.
Today the Indianapolis Monthly Dream Home is under construction at the entrance of the new cove, and a sprinkling of homes are popping up along the shoreline. You can’t live on the water or go boating and expect total peace and quiet—that just won’t happen. But with the new Kiddie Cove, some boaters are finding they can get a little closer to what they set out to do, and that’s enjoy a peaceful day on the water at Geist Reservoir.

Who do you call when your car breaks down or when you have a flat tire? Perhaps you call a family member, a co-worker, or a neighbor. If you’re a member of the Geist Networking Lunch Club, it wouldn’t be shocking if the answer is one of your networking lunch associates. That was actually the case for one member who was helped by a fellow member on the side of the interstate. This sentiment of selflessness and community fills the Geist Networking Lunch Club, and its leaders want to share their unique forum with more Geist professionals.
The Geist Networking Lunch Club is a Gold Star referral group that meets every Friday at noon. The local networking lunch club currently meets at Goodfella’s Brick Oven Pizza on Olio Road. Large enough to create impact but small enough to develop meaningful business relationships, the Geist Networking Lunch Club currently averages 8-9 members per lunch meeting, according to Brian Bodenhamer of Modere.
“With 9 official members at the moment, we think 15-20 members would work great,” said Bodenhamer, the club’s director. “In our club, each member gets regular presentation opportunities and we only allow one member per industry.”
The club’s leaders suggest you “like” their Facebook page (facebook.com/GeistNetworkingLunchClub) to make an initial connection. “We recommend people visit an actual meeting because they have to experience a certain comfort level with the group,” said Marcia Honz, the club’s business coach and a senior mortgage banker at Union Savings Bank.
It doesn’t require much exploration to discover how loyal and genuine this networking lunch club is. Ethics, education, and advocacy are just a few things the club’s leaders stress. “The appeal for a business owner is that you have cost-effective ambassadors— extensions of your business,” said Greg Clark, team leader and President of Greg Clark Insurance Agency, Inc. Clark adds, “You have ethical business professionals who are knowledgeable and willing to educate you on a weekly basis.”
For more information about the Geist Networking Lunch Club, visit the club’s Facebook page or contact club director Brian Bodenhamer at [email protected].

Off to do our patriotic duty, your Girls About Town headed to Fort Wayne for the Indiana Republican Party Convention. We figured anything with “party” in the title sounded promising! Besides, it was a weekend away from cleaning, chauffeuring kids, and cooking. What did we have to lose?
The weekend started at the convention center on Friday night at 5. The room was full with 1,700 delegates and elected
officials. The county signs were everywhere to let you know where to sit, and we were with the Hamilton County group.
The main purpose of the weekend was to elect the Republican nominee for Indiana State Treasurer. There were three people running, and they all spoke. Honestly, they all sounded good to us. After they spoke, we heard from the GOP National Chairman, Reince Priebus. He was surprisingly entertaining! This
probably won’t come off right, but he sounded like a character from The Sopranos. He said that the Party needed a better game plan, and that it needed to be more aggressive. He really got the crowd going!
Next was Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and U.S. presidential contender. Mr. Huckabee was pretty much what you’d expect. If you’ve ever seen his show, that’s what he was like. He mixed humor and heartwarming anecdotes effectively.
After all the speeches, the real fun began! We adjourned across the street to the minor league ballpark. It was a picture-perfect night, and various restaurants were giving away some great food. There was a band playing, and we mingled with the other delegates. We went upstairs to the suites packed with elected officials, delegates, lawyers, and sponsors. It had a very upbeat vibe and was a lot of fun. The different candidates sponsored suites, and everyone walked around chatting.
After the suites, we headed to a block party down the street. It was around midnight, but it felt like it was the middle of the day.

It was sponsored by the mayor of Fort Wayne (we think). ere was more music, more drinks, and more people. ere was a bar across the street where we headed a er that. One of the candidates sponsored that event. It was one late night! It really felt like we were back in college.
Amazingly, we got to the convention hall on time the next morning at 10. It was a busy morning. We listened to and voted on some potential changes to the Party platform. ( is is where it would have been very helpful to have read the literature they sent us ahead of time.) A er that vote, there were speeches from Speaker of the House and Geist resident Brian Bosma, Senate Pro Tem David Long, Governor Mike Pence and First Lady Karen Pence. If you’ve ever heard Governor Pence speak, you can’t help but notice one thing…the guy really wants to be another Reagan. His mannerisms, his delivery and his message very much have that “shining city upon a hill” speech
quality that Reagan had. Time will tell whether that resonates with the public, if he chooses to run for president. It did work with this crowd.
A er Governor Pence spoke, it was Richard Mourdock’s turn. He spoke for about 20 minutes and gave a somewhat tearful thank-you and goodbye speech. He is stepping down from his post as the State Treasurer due to term limits. Interestingly, his comparison of the direction of the U.S. to that of Nazi Germany went largely unnoticed during the convention. Reporters claimed that the delegates were “stunned,” “shocked,” and “outraged.” Having been there, we can tell you that simply was not the case. He gave a heartfelt farewell speech that was touching.
When the speeches ended, we lined up to vote. ere were three candidates vying for the treasurer’s job. It took three rounds of voting to determine that the winner was
Kelly Mitchell. She currently works in the treasurer’s o ce and will run against the Democrat nominee in November. In between votes, we went across the street to the local watering hole. It was be er than killing time on the metal chairs in the convention hall.
e convention ended with a performance by Kenny Loggins. anks to our friend Steve, we were lucky enough to score second row seats. We jumped out of our seats when “Footloose” came on and were dancing in the aisles. It was a great crowd, and Loggins completely engaged the audience. A er the show, we went to a meet-and-greet with Mr. Loggins. He was personable and cha ed politely with everyone there.
It was an action-packed weekend, and we want to thank our county chairman, Pete Emigh, for le ing both of us join in the fun. We are already looking forward to the next one in 2016. Who said politics is boring?

In a large classroom, there are teens, all sitting together, some engaged in the schoolwork, others glancing at the clock every 30 seconds, and some whispering to others about popular trends. It seems like a normal, modern American high school. Yet not all of these students are from America. Some may be from Switzerland, others have friends and family back home in South Korea, and a few are only going to be here for one semester and return home to Germany in a few months. This diversity in just one classroom can only be achieved through foreign exchange programs, such as the Council for International Educational Exchange, or CIEE, whose main priority is placing students from around the world in high schools all across the United States.
In the 2013-2014 school year at Lawrence North High School, there were seven different exchange students, from various countries around the world including Brazil, Slovakia, Germany and the Republic of Georgia. All of these students were placed by Lynne Burns, the local coordinator in Indianapolis for CIEE. “The mission of CIEE is to have a cultural and educational experience with a host family. They will gain the sense of what it’s like to live in an American family and go to an American school,” Burns said.
CIEE, like most foreign exchange programs, focuses on placing students all across the United States, trying to get them into as many different high schools and into as many different states as they possibly can.
Brazilian exchange student Leonardo Destri Abdalla described his experience: “It’s crazy and fun and very different. It was so cool to get a new experience in the U.S. and be able to share these experiences with my host family was awesome.”
And the exchange students aren’t the only ones benefiting from the experience. Several students studying at Lawrence North have been affected by their presence at the school. Thanks to certain foreign language classes and the Spanish Immersion program, some American students can communicate with different students around the world and learn more about their experiences in another country.
Brad Cangany, a guidance counselor at LN who counsels the foreign exchange students,

explains, “We had one student who enrolled kind of late. She was in her art class one day. We had two exchange students, from neighboring eastern European countries, and they started talking a li le bit. en an LN student came up to them and started talking to them in their native language. So it can a ect the students who are in the same classes with them.”
Lawrence North has had a history of welcoming various exchange students to the school over the years. According to Cangany, “We’ve always been very open to having exchange students. Now if there’s only one student from another country, there won’t be much of an impact because they’re only going to seven classes. Now if we have 10 students that’s potentially 70 classes they’re going to impact. I think it just contributes to our experience here. In our own li le corner of Marion County, we’re a pre y diverse school to begin with, and then you bring in that international feel—it heightens that sense of diversity.”
Because of LN’s diverse nature, the school is notable for having hosted many exchange students over the years. LN was one of the schools with the most exchange students in the state this year, with most schools averaging four.
When it comes to the number of inbound exchange students from other countries, Indiana ranks eighth in highest foreign exchange student population, according to a study conducted by the Council on the Standards for International Educational Travel, or CSIET.
Hosting many exchange students can be important for future international relations. “It’s a real positive exchange back and forth,” said Cangany. “Hopefully, when our students grow up and have children of their own they will have an appreciation for people who have grown up in a culture di erent from our own, and not be quick to make judgments.”
Of course, CIEE is not the only foreign exchange program in the United States. “ ere’s a lot of competition,” said Burns. However, CIEE remains one of the top programs in the country, as it is among a select few organizations that provides for students from the four major grant programs enacted by the United States government. e programs, being Yes!, Asmile, Flex, and Congress-Bundestag, all help nd the proper host families and schools in which they should place the students.
While many students have already returned
to their home nations, they now have new experiences from the United States to share with their friends back home. Julie Niemeyer, an exchange student from Germany, said, “It’s hard to explain really. ere were a lot of di erent things I experienced. It’s like everything’s new, but really not, and you don’t really know what to expect. I would de nitely do it again.”
Julie Niemeyer with Leo Abdalla
Erik Fedje is a student at Lawrence North High School and a member of the North Star Newspaper at his school. His family hosted Leonardo Abdalla, an exchange student from Brazil. He enjoys writing both fiction
stories along with news articles, with the ultimate goal of pursuing creative writing.
