4 CASING
fig.2: Housing, view
As an additional option GEA Refrigeration Germany offers sound insulation for your machine room using a newlydeveloped casing. The double-walled and down-closed housing construction with insulating material reduces the sound pressurelevel measured outside by around 5 dB(A) and thereby achieves a significant noise reduction. In addition the housing also serves as protection against physical contact. An ventilation system keeps the temperatures in the interiors within limits and simultaneously prevents heat los-ses on the unit.Individual wall elements can be quickly and easily dismantled, so that the access for maintenance work isensured. Alternatively the entire housing can be removed completely by loosening a few screws in the baseframe.Last but not the least, the filigree design combines the functional requirements with modern, high-quality optics.

6 DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND FUNCTION
6.1 Design, applications
The BluAstrum Chiller Programme provides provencomponents as complete refrigeration systems formedium and large refrigeration and/or air condition-ing requirements.Main fields of application:
– cold water for air conditioning
– cold brine for air conditioning with combined icestorage operation
– cold water for industrial processes
– cold brine for industrial processes
– (cold) and warm water for heat pump operationIn principle, these refrigeration systems use ammo-nia as refrigerant which is characterized by a highrefrigeration capacity, low energy consumption and afavourable price and are completely neutral towardsthe environment.Equipped with the screw compressor series, theBluAstrum chillers cover the refrigeration range of600 to 1800 kW for cold water. The output ranges are defined by 6 sizes of thescrew compressor series. The BluAstrum chillers work with flooded evapora-tor systems on the basis of gravity recirculation andcan be fitted with a variety of condenser types. The chillers have a modular design and comprise thefollowing main modules:
• Standard screw screw compressor package
• Heat exchanger subassembly with integrated liq-uid separator and de-oiling system
• Low-voltage installation with frequency converterand control device
The modular construction of the chillers is modelledon the construction of the screw compressor pack-ages. The oil separator and the integrated liquid sep-arator are arranged horizontally. The arrangement ofthe components ensures the extremely compactdesign of the chillers.Only flat plate evaporators with integrated separatorare used as evaporators. On the condenser side, the following versions areused:
• Plate type condenser
• evaporative condenser (R)
• air-cooled condenser (R)The BluAstrum chillers are supplied, as a standard, ready for connection, fully piped and wired. The BluAstrum (R) chillers are supplied in such acomplete state that on site only the air cooled con-denser or the evaporative condenser has to be inte-grated.The heat exchangers are designed according to theparameters of a project, taking into account a maxi-mum energy efficiency on the evaporator and thecondenser side.
Hint!
Ensure a separate condenser is instal-led for each BluAstrum in case of anoperation with external condenser(version BluAstrum (R))! It is not per-mitted to operate multiple BluAstrumwith only one common condenser.
The standard version of the chillers is equipped witha freely programmable control. All operating and fault signals as well as the processvariables can be read from a display. The control device is operated via a Touch Panel. The chillers are supplied without refrigerant and with-out refrigerating machine oil; they are filled with drynitrogen (approx. 0,2 bar ... 0,5 bar overpressure). When commissioning a start-up or a factory accept-ance test (FAT) the refrigerating machine oil is inclu-ded in the scope of delivery. Each chiller is supplied with user documentation con-taining a description of the refrigeration cycle, com-missioning instructions, an operating manual and themaintenance instructions.Separate assembly instructions are provided fordetailed information about the screw compressors.

6.2 Mode of operation
The screw compressor draws refrigerant gas fromthe liquid separator and compresses it to condensa-tion pressure. The refrigerant liquefies as it is cooled and is expan-ded in the liquid separator. In the liquid separator, the refrigerant vapour and liq-uid are separated. The liquid is led through the evaporator by gravitycirculation (thermosiphon principle). As result of liq-uid refrigerant absorbing heat (flooded evaporation)the refrigerant evaporates and the secondary refrig-erant is cooled down.During the operation of the screw compressor, oil isinjected into the working chamber and then separa-ted again from the refrigerant in the discharge sideoil separator. The oil which has heated up in the compressor iscooled in an oil cooler to reach the inlet temperatureand passes an agglomerator.Despite the highly effective oil separation system, oilpenetrates to the low pressure side of the chiller.A special automatic and maintenance-free oil return-ing system developed by GEA Refrigeration Ger-many GmbH returns the oil from the liquid separatorback to the screw compressor. This is a basic precondition for a fault-free operationof the evaporator system. The capacity of the screw compressor is controlledusing the frequency converter of the compressordrive motor in a step-less manner. Thus the coolingcapacity can be maximum optimized on the effec-tively required cooling capacity in the range 22% to100% (depending on the application area). The Vi capacity slide is hydraulically adjusted andactivated using 2 solenoid valves. The position of theVi control slide is displayed on the compressor con-trol.
6.3 Main components
6.3.1 Compressor
fig.3: Arrangement of the compressor
The screw compressor is characterized by a com-pact design, a high reliability, high quality compo-nents and the ease of maintenance.Screw compressors are dual rotor positive displace-ment machines that run according to the principleand are operate by oil injection. The screw compressor is operated with ammonia(NH3, R 717) as the refrigerant. CPI1009-68 is rec-ommended as the refrigerating machine oil.Various series and sizes of screw compressors areavailable for different fields of application. The screw compressor is driven directly by the com-pressor drive motor via a coupling.

6.3.2 Compressor drive motor
fig.4: Arrangement of the compressor drive motor
Standard: The compressor is driven by an air-cooled 2-pole electric motor IP23 with an operatingvoltage of 400 V; 50 Hz using a coupling. The speed of the electric motor is controlled using afrequency converter (1000 min-1 ... 4500 min-1) andis designed as a flange mounted motor with base,IMB35 configuration.Optional: Other protection types and operating vol-tages on request.
Hint!
The documentation of the electricmotor (operating manual) is a part ofthe product documentation.
6.3.3 Coupling
fig.5: Arrangement of the coupling,
The coupling helps in transmission of torquebetween compressor and compressor drive motor. The non-clutch design of the coupling brings aboutthe neutralisation of the otherwise disturbing influen-ces such as axial or radial forces, vibrations or offset.Speed fluctuations and speed shocks are dampedand cushioned, torsional vibrations are reduced.
Hint!
The documentation of the coupling(operating manual) is a part of theproduct documentation.
6.3.4 Evaporator
fig.6: Arrangement of the evaporator
In the evaporator heat is absorbed from the secon-dary refrigerant (which is thereby cooled) by way ofevaporation of the refrigerant. The evaporator worksby the principle of overflowed evaporation.Liquid drops are effectively separated in the liquidseparator integrated into the evaporator. In the case of external condensing systems (RemoteVP and Remote LP), a maximum level indicator isinstalled in the liquid separator to provide additionalprotection against overfilling. The suction pressureand secondary refrigerant outlet temperature aremonitored to provide reliable protection againstfreezing.Design, manufacture and acceptance of the evapo-rator with integrated liquid separator comply with therequirements of the Pressure Equipment Directive.

10 SOUND PRESSURE LEVEL
Measuring-surface sound-pressure levelAt a distance of 1 m from the machine surface (A-close range sound level at oper air conditions on reflectingsurface) for chillers (1 compressor and 1 drive motor).Determining the measured values:
• Without secondary sound insulation.
Caution!
Measuring-surface sound-pressure level strongly depends on the chiller type and especiallyon the type of the drive motor (manufacturer, type, protection type).Because of this the values are guide values, which have to be confirmed by the technicalspecifications of the project.
