MALAWI PROJECT

MYLOL 2014

The Springburn Academy Malawi Project evolved over the 2013-14

session and became known as MYLOL 2014 – Malawi Young Leaders of

Learning. We partnered with Lochend Community High School and

embarked on a leadership and team building journey throughout the

session. Springburn Academy selected 11 young people from S6 to

take this project forward on behalf of the school, building on the

preliminary work established by Mr Lamb and Miss Timlin who visited

Malawi in June 2013. The group have been involved in many, many

fundraising events and have been working towards their total of £20,

000. Along with fundraising leadership training and team building has

been an integral part of the journey. The group have been attending

training events almost every Thursday night in Glasgow City Chambers to prepare themselves for this life

changing experience.

The MYLOL 2014 project has not just been about the 11 young

people, but has involved the whole school community through

fundraising events. The team have organised fun runs for all S1/2

pupils, car boot sales for the local community, staff dinner nights,

silent auctions, race nights, plus many more. All events have helped

raise awareness of Malawi and it links with Scotland, also

highlighting the importance of the project.

The young people will be visiting a school called Chichiri Secondary School in

Blantyre, which Springburn Academy created a partnership with last year and

will work with a corresponding Malawian MYLOL group to help renovate

classrooms in the attached primary school. In doing this, it creates a better

environment for teaching in Chichiri Primary School and helps the learners

understand better by putting teaching resources on the walls, creating a

stimulating place to learn. Working on a project like this will change our

young people’s lives and give them perspective on their own situation.

The project has developed them into leaders of learning and will give them

experiences to be more resilient – all qualities require of a modern day

school leaver. After the young people visit “The warm heart of Africa” they

will have enough memories and stories to last a lifetime and hopefully

continue to help the Springburn Academy Malawi Project in the future, by

building on the legacy of what they have started.

UNDER 18 FOOTBALL

Springburn Academy's Under-18 football team has made history

this year by winning the double of the Glasgow Senior

Championship Shield and the Cameronian (Glasgow) Cup. Both

competitions are over 100 years old and this is the first ever win in

either trophy for Springburn Academy, formerly Albert Secondary

School. In addition the team also reached the final of the Scottish

Senior Shield this year, losing only on penalties to St Ambrose

High, Coatbridge, after a 0-0 draw.

The same Springburn team had formerly won the Scottish under

16 Shield in 2012, again the first success for the school in a

national trophy. The final of the Glasgow Championship Senior

Shield was played at the ground of Maryhill Juniors FC on

Saturday 17 May. The team triumphed over Holyrood

Secondary 1-0 with the winning goal coming in the second half

from Billy Vidler. So on the same day St Johnstone won its first

ever Scottish Cup. Springburn won the famous Glasgow Shield

for the first time. Four days later, the boys faced Our Lady at St

Patrick's High School in the Cameronian (Glasgow) cup final at

Celtic Park. On a never to be forgotten day for all concerned.

Springburn again triumphed 1-0, with the winner yet again scored by Billy Vidler. The match was followed by

a celebration dinner held at Celtic Park to mark the six years the team has been together. The dinner was

attended by staff, team and parents and other family.

The team has been taken by Craig Hamilton DHT and Cara Timlin

PT Pastoral Care since the boys have been in S1. Mr Hamilton says

"This is a really special group of boys who been magnificent

ambassadors for the School and their families over the past 6 years.

Their loyalty to the School and their team - mates is second to none

and it has been a real privilege to work with them over the years. I

am so pleased that their dedication to the School has been rewarded

with this historic Glasgow double." Ms Timlin says "I'm so proud of

all the boys- it has been a pleasure working with them for the last 6

years and I wish them all the best for the future.”"

SOCIAL SUBJECTS & RME

IDL Project

For the third year running, our 2nd year pupils are participating in an Inter Disciplinary

Project on the issue of Development and the problems associated with it. The project’s

aims are to enhance and develop previous learning from the discreet subjects of History,

Geography, Modern Studies and RME and to develop the skills of citizenship, critical

thinking and evaluation and analysis. The theme covers the history of the scramble for

Africa, explores problems connected with aid and debt, looks at the problem of child

soldiers and street children and investigates and evaluates the solutions of The

Millennium Goals and Fair-trade. Moreover, pupils are also encouraged to reflect on the problems of others

and respond to feelings of empathy with a desire to enact change for the better in the wider world around

them. Pupils will be taken off of timetable mid-June to experience workshops and talks from various outside

agencies and certificates and prizes will be given to pupils who have shown effort, ability and creativity come

assessment time. We believe it is a very positive experience for all involved!

PERFORMING ARTS 2013-2014

Scottish Chamber Orchestra

On 20 September two members of the SCO came to do a workshop in school about

Scottish composer James McMillan and his piece “Veni, Veni Emmanuel”. They

talked to the pupils about the techniques McMillan used in his composition and how

we could recreate some of his ideas in our own composition work. The pupils then

split into groups and came up with some lovely pieces of music. The following week

the same pupils attended a performance of “Veni, Veni Emmanuel” by the SCO at the Glasgow Royal Concert

Hall. The concert was great and the pupils enjoyed the experience.

Behind the Noise - Lectures

Behind the Noise is an 8 month long course on

the music industry. Pupils learn about different

aspect of music business including intellectual

property rights and how to put on a gig. The

pupils formed a band and recorded a demo in a professional recording studio which can be heard on

SoundCloud. The final part of the course is Gig at the Grand, a showcase of all the Glasgow school bands

involved in the project.

Calamity Jane

On the 30 October 25 pupils and teachers form Springburn

Academy attended a performance of Calamity Jane at the

Kings Theatre. It was a whip-cracking performance!

Rachel Sermanni Songwriting Workshop

On the 5 November a group of budding

songwriters and guitar players headed

to the Scottish Music Centre at the City

Halls for a song writing workshop

delivered by singer/songwriter Rachel

Sermanni. Rachel performed some of

her songs, gave the pupils some tips for

song writing and took questions from

the audience. The session was really interesting and inspired some of

our young people to go home and write a song!

Sweet Injection Concert

Sweet Injection performed as part of our S1/2 Halloween disco in October.

Sweet Injection is a girl group from Glasgow. They sang a mixture of covers

and original songs complete with dance routines. They were very popular with

the pupils…..especially the boy ;)

Supernova Concert

Supanova are a guitar based band from the Glasgow area. They

performed in November to pupils who bought tickets. The band was

very popular and has developed quite a fan base within the school.

Findlay Napier & Louis Abbott Songwriting Workshop

On the 6 December a group of pupils attended

a second song writing workshop with Admiral

Fallow member Louis Abbott and Back of the

Moon member Findlay Napier. They talked

about their own experiences as musicians and

songwriters. They gave the audience an

opportunity to ask questions about life as a

musician. They performed some songs together and some individually. It was really interesting and good to

get another perspective on song writing.

Entry to the Creative Industries

During December, Chloe Dobson-O’Sullivan from Focus West at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland came to

school to deliver workshops on the creative industries. S5/6 pupils who are interested in a career in music,

acting, television, radio, theatre etc were invited to attend. The workshop focused on the different careers

within the industry and the different paths you can take to get there e.g. college/university courses and work

experience. The workshops were over a couple of weeks and helped to direct pupils to the most suitable

courses for their desired careers.

Winter Concert

The Winter Concert was held on the 11 December in the Fuel Zone. It showcased the wealth of

talent and hard work going on in the department. There were performances from the school

choir, band, woodwind group, rock group and soloists. There was a great turn out from

friends and family. The Home Economics department provided delicious refreshments which

went down a treat!

Celtic Connections

On the 16 January, the Performing Arts Department took 100 S1 pupils to

see the Treacherous Orchestra perform at Celtic Connections. The concert

was held at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall which was packed with school

pupils from all over Scotland. The S1 pupils behaved exceptionally well

and really got involved in the experience clapping and dancing along!

West Side Story

In the evening of the 16 January, 25 pupils and teachers

went to the Kings Theatre to see a performance of a

Performing Arts Department favourite - West Side Story.

The performance was by a professional touring company

and was brilliant! We sat in the Gods which meant we had

a great birds-eye view of the dance routines.

Burns Supper

The Performing Arts Department took part in the school Burns Supper on the 23

January. The Higher and Advanced Higher pupils sang a beautiful version of The

King’s Shilling whist S1 pupils performed Auld Lang Syne on the glockenspiels. The

night was finished with some tasty haggis, neeps and tatties and a dance to the

Bearsden Fiddlers ceilidh band.

Associated Board of the Royal School of Music

This year 5 woodwind pupils were entered for ABRSM exams. They all passed!

Chantelle Brodie achieved a merit at grade 1 Flute; Fraser McLeod grade 2 Flute;

Lauren Flynn grade 2 Clarinet; Chloe Tough grade 2 Clarinet and Lauren

Dimmer achieved a merit at grade 2 Clarinet. Well done everyone

Behind the Noise – Recording Studio & Production Day

The Behind the Noise band, Static recorded their demo of Starlight by Muse. They did this with

professional engineers in a professional studio and it sounds fantastic! You can hear the track

on the Behind the Noise Soundcloud page. The members of Static also attended a Production

Day at the Classic Grand on Jamaica Street. They were taught about the different aspects of

producing a professional gig complete with sound, lighting and special effects. It was a lot of

work but the band really enjoyed meeting bands from other schools.

Gold Ticket Showcase at the Emirates Arena

Music class 1.5 travelled to the Emirates Area to perform their own

compositions on the djembes. The djembes were bought with

money from the Gold Ticket fund and are used as part of our

world music studies. The class composed their music based on a

Commonwealth Games theme with rhythms made up from the

names of Commonwealth countries.

Glasgow Music Festival Choir Competition

This was the 3rd year running the Springburn Academy Choir competed in the Glasgow

Music Festival Choir Competition. Each year they have improved on their previous

performance and this year was no exception! The choir scored 87 which is an admirable

score. The choir sang Pompeii by Bastille and Royals by Lorde. The choir were

complimented on their

performance by other schools,

the former Head of Instrumental

services, competition organisers

and the adjudicator. Following their performance,

the choir have been handpicked to perform at the

Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as part of their Music

Café series in June.

Ashley Collins Concert

Ashley Collins is a Glasgow based singer songwriter with her own record label. She came

to school to perform to a select group of S1 pupils on the 14 May. Ashley sang some of

her own songs and did a few covers too. The pupils joined in with some dancing too!

After her performance, Ashley took questions from the pupils, most of which were about

her experience on Britain’s Got Talent!

Behind the Noise Gig at the Grand

This gig was amazing! Eight bands from eight Glasgow schools performed 15

minutes sets to a sold out audience at the Classic Grand. Static, the band from

Springburn Academy, includes Jamie Gordon (vocals), Andrew McLachlan

(guitar), Oskar Mazurek (drums) and Nathan Buchan (bass guitar). They played

a varied set including songs by Nirvana and Muse. The boys performed

brilliantly and held the audience captive with their distinctive sound and style.

Music Café at the Royal Glasgow Concert Hall

On the 19 June the Springburn Academy Choir will perform at the

Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as part of their Music Café series.

The choir will sing for 1 hour for people who are having their

lunch in the Concert Hall café. The choir will also get the chance

to see behind the scenes at the Concert Hall with a private tour

and a chance to have a go singing on the stage! It is an honour to have been selected for

this and the choir hope to impress the audience with their selection of popular songs.

HISTORY DEPARTMENT

SUPI Spotlight

News, views & learning from the School University Partnerships Initiative (SUPI). Welcome to our first edition

of ‘SUPI Spotlight’ - a quarterly round-up of SUPI news, views, triumphs, challenges and all-round learning.

SUPI Spotlight is produced by the NCCPE* with and for the 12 SUPI projects. SUPI is funded by Research

Councils UK. What’s in it for…Pupils?

In the first of our ‘what’s in it for?’ series, pupils participating in the Strathclyde University

hosted SUPI, ‘MUSE’, share their experiences of working with, and becoming, researchers.

S4 Pupils, Springburn Academy Project, MUSE:

We have been participating in an oral history project looking at Springburn and

the locomotive works that once dominated the area. We chose to take part as

we thought that it would be interesting, boost our Confidence and look

impressive on our UCAS applications. We’ve been working every Friday with

James Owens and Andy Clark from Strathclyde University.

We began by considering the ways that researchers find and use sources such as

newspapers and diaries. This was really interesting as we’d never really thought

about the ways that newspapers ‘spin’ stories to give a particular version and to

make money. Next we looked at how oral history can offer insights into areas that are not recorded in these

types of sources. We interviewed five Springburn residents, which was really enjoyable. It gave us first-hand

experience of doing interviews, asking questions and interacting with interviewees. We are now putting

together a Powerpoint presentation that will give us great experience in presenting our work to others.

“It gave us “first hand” experience of doing interviews, asking questions and interacting with interviewees.”

FASHION & TEXTILE

Clothing Industry in Action

Higher and N5 Fashion Textile Technology pupils visited 2

clothing manufacturers in April to see manufacturing processes

in action. First they visited Mackintosh in Cumbernauld where

Willie the head of manufacturing was very keen to show off the

traditional textile skills still used in the making of the

traditional raincoats. The pupils were very surprised to see so

many men working in the cutting, tailoring and quality checking of the business. And were

even more impressed when they got to see the new Louis Vuitton Mac the company were making for the new

season that will retail around £1000! The two hour visit ended with a can of juice and questions in the refectory

where Willie couldn’t have been more helpful or interested in our pupils who he noted were a credit to the

school for their excellent behaviour. He is interested in keeping the link with the school and keen to have

more pupils visit if they were interested in returning. Some even said they would like a job so a great visit all

round.

The second company visited was Endura in

Livingstone - one of the largest brands of cycle

clothing in the UK. This operation showed the

pupils where technology has improved some of the labour intensive aspects of the

clothing industry by use of CAD / CAM operations. The pupils were shown state

of the art laser pattern / cutting and printing systems and the operations manager

Allison printed a design onto a cycle shirt especially so the higher class could see a heat transfer in action.

IDL LEARNING PROJECT

Numeracy Day

Numeracy Day is an Inter-Disciplinary Learning project, which highlights the importance of Numeracy across

the curriculum. This project is now 2 years old and involves S1 pupils taking them on a Numeracy journey

across the school showing where Numeracy is used in not so obvious places. The pupils learn about the

importance of numbers and statistics in PE when analysing fitness, the importance of measurement and design

in technical, using numbers in Music for time signatures are but a few of the experiences our S1 learners

encounter throughout Numeracy Day. The day is ran by the Maths Department and to round off their

Numeracy based activities the pupils have to design, cost and build a bridge out of recyclable materials, linking

in nicely with an overarching theme of global warming.

The event has been hugely successful over the last two school sessions is now sustainable to last many more.

All S1 pupils reviewed the event and found it very worthwhile and opened their eyes to where Numeracy is

used – not just numbers and sums!

Cara Timlin No Smoking Group

The S5 No Smoking group have now rolled out their DVD “Stub it Out” to all schools in the North East of

Glasgow. They have also presented to all of the local primary schools. The group is now in the process in

handing over their work to a group of S3 pupils to carry on their work for the future. The no-smoking policy is

now full force and is as follows:

No smoking on school grounds.

No smoking within 200 metres of the school.

All staff and pupils will ensure that no-one smokes within school grounds/in sight of the school.

School will inform parents if their child has been seen smoking on school grounds.

School will offer parents information to help their child to get support to stop smoking.

School will also signpost adults such as staff and parents to local smoking cessation services.

The school will always support the no smoking policy

The John Muir Award

At the start of the academic year the Geography department offered the John Muir

Award to the second year pupils as an extra-curricular activity. The John Muir Award

is an environmental award scheme focused on wild places. It encourages awareness

and responsibility for the natural environment, in a spirit of fun, adventure and

exploration.

The pupils were asked to give up one Saturday per month and

join in group activity to learn about and improve their

environment. I was very fortunate to gain the support of our

community partnerships and two volunteers from Glasgow

life also joined us. We were also joined by Gavin Finbow from

the parks department in Glasgow who is also trained as an outdoor leader. The pupils

of Springburn Academy were allocated a small section of Springburn Park to improve

and create a welcoming space for wildlife that people could come and enjoy in peace.

Initially we cleared the wooded area and made it more hospitable for wildlife.

Gavin then cut wood from a fallen tree and the pupils used this to create a natural path

through the woods. This allowed people to come and walk through the woods and enjoy

the peace and tranquillity whilst not disturbing the wildlife. The pupils created seats out of

the fallen tree so that visitors could come and rest and enjoy the space. The wooded area is

adjacent to the entrance of Stobhill hospital and it is hoped that anyone who visits the

hospital will find a space with peace and tranquillity if they need it.

The john Muir candidates were an absolute credit to Springburn Academy in both their

behaviour and commitment. The pupils learned about creating natural homes for wildlife

how to recognise changes in the season and we all gained a new respect for our environment. All pupils

worked really hard but six pupils really stood out in their dedication and effort. They were Alan Bartraham,

Chloe McPhake, T J Magee, Ross Morrison, Chantelle Brodie and Dionne Walsh.

Whilst it is fantastic that the pupils and community partners were so enthusiastic of the scheme I must also

thank the parents and carers of our pupils at Springburn Academy. Without your support and commitment we

would not able to offer extra-curricular activities such as the John Muir Award.

RMPS 2nd/4th year Option Class

Trip to the Sikh Gurdwara

Sat-sri-akal!

This week the RMPS department and some of our pupils

enjoyed a warm welcome from the Sikh Gurdwara in the

South Side of Glasgow. The aim of the trip was to cement

some of the learning that had been going on in the

classroom and give pupils a first-hand insight into the beliefs

and practices of the Khalsa.

Gavin tries out the Indian keyboard!

Congratulations to Natalie Fielding (S6) in gaining her Award with distinction at Glasgow

Caledonian in Fashion Brand Retailing. Natalie has gained a place on the degree course in

September

Malorie Blackman: Children’s Laureate Event

On Wednesday the 21 of May, the English Department – along with 60 of their hardest-working pupils from S1

and S2 - had the pleasure of attending the Mitchell Theatre to see one of their favourite authors. Malorie

Blackman entertained them for over 2 hours and inspired many of the audience to rush to the library to borrow

her books.

Overall, it was a fantastic morning and the English Department were very proud of the excellent behaviour

displayed by all pupils who attended.
