Healthy at Flo Valley ** This interview is part of a series highlighting the ways in which Flo Valley faculty and staff members stay healthy.**
Kim Barr, Florissant Valley Biology Department faculty member, is active in a variety of ways on campus and in her personal life.
What does health and wellness mean to you?
Health and wellness means feeling good when I wake up in the morning and go to bed at night. Also, making sure I am present and healthy for my son.
How do you incorporate exercise into your life?
I try to sign up for classes at our recreation center in my town. If I know I have paid for it, and I am expected to show up, it keeps me on track.
How do you incorporate healthy eating into your life?
I tell myself I have to eat something healthy before I eat something unhealthy that way I am partially full and won’t eat as much unhealthy junk.
What is your favorite way to incorporate wellness into your life?
With my son – We love to ride bikes and swim together.
Do you have any healthy living goals? What are they?
To maintain a healthy weight for my height and to maintain my HDL and LDL levels.
Do you currently participate or have you participated in any health and wellness activities on the STLCC campuses (fitness classes, PE facilities, etc.)?
Yes – Step It Up challenge! Also, I use the PE facilities. I would like to use the full Gym, but I don’t have time to take the classes to allow access.
Either presently or in the past, with which health and wellness-related obstacles do you find yourself struggling (if any)?
Time! I tell myself I am going to work out after office hours, but then I find 20 other things to do!
