Program Notes
In March 2003, as American bombs began falling on Baghdad, Turkish actress Ayça
Damgaci left her flat in Istanbul and headed for the Iraq border. Behind that cordon
was Kurdish actor Hama Ali Khan, the love of Damgaci's life-her moon and stars, her
Marlon and her Brando, her everything. Hüseyin Karabey makes his narrative debut
retelling the tale of Damgaci's quixotic road trip to the war zone, with Damgaci
playing herself and Khan appearing in the actual video love notes he sent to her
during their time apart. My Marlon and Brando is a piece of rough magic, a film with
a soul as light, a heart as heavy, and a will as steely as its heroine's own. Karabey's
experience as a director of documentaries shines through in his devotion to
ethnographic detail-he's eager to let the camera stray, vérité-style, and this helps to
bring home Damgaci's growing sense of dislocation. Borders may be porous, but it is
still possible to feel a stranger in a strange land. Really, though, the movie is
Damgaci's-a brave, tender, and frequently very funny tribute to her love for Khan.
Read aloud, her letters to him make for something wonderful and new in the history
of lovers beseeching. Communicating in English, their shared tongue, Damgaci's
clumsy grasp of the language elevates into rhetoric all the more moving for being
flawed. Likewise, through Khan's ham-fistedly hilarious videos, you miss him on
Dagmaci's behalf. Politics may turn this comedy about unlikely lovers into a tragedy,
but even in its fleeting ungainliness,My Marlon and Brando is a fitting homage to
Damgaci and Khan, two matched souls that no impassable border could ever tear
asunder.

Program Notes
The most haunting frame of Ramchand Pakistani may be its first. Over a black
screen, the words appear: adapted from actual events. The world is full of mad facts,
but among the maddest is that in 2002, as Indian and Pakistani troops massed against
each other on the countries' border, an eight-year-old boy named Ramchand
wandered over the invisible line separating his own side of the desert from that of
India's and was taken prisoner. Going in search of Ramchand, his father followed
him across and was captured as well. They were held in an overcrowded Indian jail
for five years. In her first feature film, Mehreen Jabbar lays out the political contexts
of Ramchand's situation with exceptional fluidity. Titles at the top establish the
geopolitics, and the more localized issues are threaded through early scenes. Most
salient of all is the fact that Ramchand's family is part of a Hindu tribe of
untouchables, making them both suspect and powerless in Pakistan. Bollywood star
Nandita Das thus proves doubly brave for taking the part of Ramchand's mother:
Ramchand Pakistani isn't exactly a valentine to India. But the film does have a heart,
paying heed to the characters crowding the jailhouse and shaping the child's universe
within it. Playing the younger Ramchand, Syed Fazal Hussain proves one of those
miracle discoveries-he's a real kid, all piss and vinegar and shaking vulnerabilities-
and Jabbar does well to dwell on his face as much as she does. Special note must also
go to cinematographer Sofian Khan, who shoots both the actors and the ravishing
desert scenery with an elegant, wide-angled tenderness. The world is, after all, full of
mad facts-but full of beauty, too.

Action. Born to race cars, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is aggressive, instinctive and,
most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he
idolized-the legendary Rex Racer, whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that
Speed is driven to fulfill. Speed is loyal to the family racing business, led by his father,
Pops Racer (John Goodman), the designer of Speed's thundering Mach 5. When
Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not
only infuriates the company's maniacal owner (Roger Allam) but uncovers a terrible
secret-some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls who
manipulate the top drivers to boost profits. If Speed won't drive for Royalton,
Royalton will see to it that the Mach 5 never crosses another finish line. The only way
for Speed to save his family's business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his
own game. With the support of his family and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie (Christina
Ricci), Speed teams with his one-time rival-the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox)-to
win the race that had taken his brother's life: the death-defying, cross-country rally
known as The Crucible.

Director: Jonathan Levine Ben Kingsley Josh Peck Mary-Kate Olsen Method Man Olivia Thirlby
Program Notes
Jonathan Levine's quirky, bittersweet coming-of-age comedy follows the last summer
before college in the life of Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck). His family lives under the
constant threat of eviction, his parents fight relentlessly, and he's stuck in a scorching
Manhattan with few friends, depressed and lonely. He spends his days selling
marijuana to stoners in Central Park and crushing on the hottest girl in school,
Stephanie (Olivia Thirlby). But he finds his closest friendship and most reliable
relationship by trading weed for therapy with Stephanie's stepfather, Dr. Squires (Sir
Ben Kingsley), a man with issues of his own. Levine's mid-'90s memory play is one of
the first films to truly treat the period with a loving sense of nostalgia. Reminiscing
about a New York City slowly adjusting to the Giuliani way of life and a pop culture
that finds white boys embracing hip-hop music and culture, Levine creates a new kind
of tale about teenage identity and angst, one viewed through the prism of a post-turn-
of-the-Millennium and post-9/11 world. The Wackness exposes a teenage lifestyle that
is messy and complicated but still filled with wonderment, romance, and new
understandings of the world and one's place in it. The director's stylistic flourishes
combined with playful but complex performances by Kingsley, up-and-comers Peck
(Nickelodeon's Drake and Josh) and Thirlby (Juno), Method Man, and Famke
Janssen help the audience learn exactly what the difference is between the wackness
and the dopeness!
