The trip began Friday
night at the Black Spur pub
in Narbethong for dinner. As
Stephen and I rocked up last,
I am writing the trip report.
Our trip companions in-
cluded Rowdy and his mate
Ange, Plumber and Humph,
Matt, and us. After dinner
we headed to our camp for
the night, Frenchmans
Creek. Cold night, and as we
had no fire an early one at
that.
We were up bright and early
the next day, and had left
camp by 8:30am! As we left
camp, we took Cambarville
logging road up to Corn Hill,
where we were in snow by
9:15 and lots of photos were
taken.
From Corn Hill we went
down Frenchman’s creek,
and across Mansfield Woods
Point road. It was then on to
Old Coach road and Webber
spur which were pretty easy
going, until we got to Black
River track which proved to
be more interesting than we
though. As our gallant trip
leader crossed the Goulburn
River onto Black spur we ran
into some slight trouble. The
other side of the track was
slippery and rutted, and we
got to try out our new
winch. We were the only
ones who had to winch up
that section. After some
hard work we were out and
moving again, until we found
Rowdy having some trouble
up another slippery section.
After a little bit more winch-
ing for Rowdy and ourselves,
we made it to the helipad
only a few hundred metres
up Black spur.
We decided to plow on and
make it to the hut on Lazari-
nis Spur track for lunch. Af-
ter lunch we continued up
Lazarinis and on to the Hey-
field Jamieson road and up
to Mount Skene. It wasn’t
long before we cam across
some lovely snow to play in…
and play we did! We got
crossed up in the drain, but
after some good work got (Continued on page 10)

ourselves going again.
Plumber however landed
himself into the bank further
up the road, requiring at-
tempts by Rowdy to pull him
out. After Rowdy got himself
stuck trying to recover
Plumber, the winches came
out. It didn’t take long, and
we were traveling up to the
top of Skene.
Unfortunately, we weren’t
the only ones who had de-
cided to venture to Skene
that Saturday. We found a
place to pull over and have
some snow ball fights, and
photo opportunities. After
our fun, we kept heading
down the road and turned
off at Mt Sunday road, and
headed for our camp of
Silverwater Hut.
This hut was a
great find:
down the end
of a dead end
road and with
a hut big
enough for all
our swags to
be set up for
the night (except Matt who
preferred the al fresco op-
tion). We dragged a log
down from the road and
started our first fire of the
weekend: glo-
rious to be
warm! An un-
eventful night
of drinks,
good food and
good com-
pany. We
awoke the
next day to
fair weather and some over-
night rain.
After some de-
bate, we headed
back to the top of
Mt Skene to see if
our rain had pro-
duced snow on
the top. We fol-
lowed some other
people’s tracks
for part of the
way, but soon we were
breaking fresh ground in the
new snow. As we passed one
of the lookouts, a man
jumped out in front of
Rowdy’s car. He and his son
were stuck in the snow, and
could we please help them
(by themselves – not a great
idea). As always, our club is
there to help, and they were
soon off on their way again.
It was then up to the top for
more photos and snow ball
fights. As we turned around
and headed back down the
mountain, we came across a
(Continued from page 7)

group of 7 or so. It is very
hard to forge new tracks in
metre deep snow to allow
other cars to pass. After
some effort and a few rescue
operations, we were clear
and on our way.
It’s here that we parted
ways. Stephen and I contin-
ued on to Jamieson and
home. The others traveled
down Snake Edwards track
and onwards. Judging by
some of the photos on the
website, they encountered a
mighty river crossing on their
way. All in all, a fantastic
trip. Great to see so much
snow and wonderful scenery.
Thanks to all who came, and
see you all in the next out-
ing.
Cheers,
Helen and Stephen.

Troy - dual cab lux
I headed of Friday
arvo picking up
Simmo on the way
and met up with Matt
on the road, a quick
stop for fuel and a pie
in Mansfield and we
continued on to Wrens Flat.
A camp site was found and
cans cracked as an erection
was had (tarp ) with Stef
and Claude turning up
shortly after, some fire
wood gathered and a fire lit
and a few cans latter Troy
arrived with Phil’s crew
turning up some time latter.
More merriment was had
by all until the early hours
of the morning.
With the rain falling all
night and finally stoping as
we got up troy whipped up
some delicious breaky san-
gas as camp was packed.
The tracks where slippery
to start with then turning to
snow covered as we turned
up to Mt Sunday. The going
soon became slow with me
dropping to the doors in
fresh snow, the winch cable
was run out and as I was
www.hiluxclub.org.au 15
winding the cable in under
full load the cable snapped
with the dampener doing its
job. Phil tried to go around
to a similar fate, with a bit
of digging and some anger
of the right boot he was out
with Stef getting stuck and
winching out using the
back of my rig as an
anchor, a snatch
strap strung between
Stef and myself and I
was free. With my
winch out of action
Stef went up front of
the group to soon be
stuck again, with phil
pulling him back out
the decision was made
to turn around with
this I was turning around
and lost my clutch and had
to start the car in gear to
move. Matt and myself con-
tinued on down the hill
while Phil recovered
Troy who had be-
come stuck in the
snow with all 4
wheels of the ground
spinning freely, with
every one at the bot-
tom the call was
made to head to Silverwater
hut for the night. With a
stop along the way to play
on a hill we got to the hut
had some late lunch, Claude
showed his
fire skills
with swags
being
rolled out
and camp
was set as
we sat in
for a night
of jocular-
ity.
With the
rain falling on the roof of
the hut we arose with Troy
whipping up a pot of por-
ridge that hit the spot as the
rain turned to snow eventu-
ally it cleared and Troy
Matt Simmo and myself
cleared out and headed to
Jamieson with Phil and Stef
not far behind. With a small
issue on the way we got to
Jamieson were I called the
RACV and organized a tow
truck to get the ute home.
Everyone caught up at the
Mansfield bakery and then
it was home ward bound.
Rowdy.
