LADY GaGa meditates tohis music and Oscar winnerTilda Swinton can’t getenough of it.But pop boy Patrick Wolf isn’tbothered by any of that. He’s just glad to have his hun-ger back and reckons fifth albumLupercalia — out on May 30 — isactually his REAL debut album. It’s all about the trials and tribu-lations of falling in love.Patrick, 27, said: “People are mis-erable in the UK right now, I’drather fight that with love andoptimism to help people look onthe brighter side of things.“This is an older and moreknowledgeable album about lovethan the typical ones you hear.“I’m really proud of what I’vedone but I do feel the best is yetto come.“This feels like my debut album, which is really odd. I feel like I’vereturned to a state of innocenceand confidence that I’ve beenyearning to get back to since Iwas 17.”South Londoner Patrick hasalways had a cult following andbeen big news in music circles. His last album — 2009’s TheBachelor which featured Swintonreading passages as the voiceof Hope — was totallyfinanced by his fansbut, for this one,he’s teamed upwith record giantsMercury. He said: “I’ve

gone from the really indieworld to major labels, thenfunded by my fans — and nowI’m back with a major label.”The audience for this albumlooks like being massive.Music bible NME is gettingright behind the super catchy,

lead single The City —which was releasedthis week. And evenLady GaGa hasgiven it her super-star seal ofapproval.Patrick said:

“She came to one of my showswhen I was touring the lastalbum and I know she’s a fanof mine — the last time we werein contact she was inviting meto her gigs.“I’m very flattered as she’s areal genius, so it’s really cool.“The single is all about timesbeing hard and it’s like a mid-dle finger to all things material.“It’s getting back to thingslike loyalty and love — youdon’t care if your mum’s justgot fired or your best friend’sin debt, we should all focus on

the important things in life.”The 6ft 4in beanpole croonerkicks off his UK tour at Glas-gow’s Oran Mor on Wednesday. And Patrick is looking forsome crowd participation. He said: “Five albums ispretty tricky to fit into an hourand a half.“Plus I take requests. I like tomake sure I’m well preparedknowing all my tracks — so it’slucky I’ve always written myown songs.”And he’s so in the zone withhis new stuff, Patrick has put

his proposed summer weddingon ice until next year.He raved: “I’ve had my Brit-ney moments for sure and saidI was quitting music before, butI’ve got nowhere else to go.“I feel I’ve turned a whole360 degrees now — I’m back tofeeling as excited about lifeand music as I’veever been.”Q See patrick-w o l f . c o mfor tourinfo anddownloads.

JACK TOWNESWHO: Jack Townes (vocals/guitar), Andy O’Neill (guitar),Johnny Madden (bass), ConnaireMcCann (drums)WHERE: GlasgowFOR FANS OF: The Clash, TheVaccines, Jesus And Mary ChainJIM SAYS: I’ve been telling every-one who’ll listen that the bestband I’ve seen this year are TheControls . . . then they changetheir name to Jack Townes! They may have signed to Colum-

bia Records before they’d evenplayed a proper live show, butAndy and Johnny had been play-ing together since they were 12.While this is Jack’s first band,

he’s always been a songwriter.Maybe it’s in his genes as his dadis Texas legend Johnny McElhone. He’s not tried to hide the family

connection, but that hasn’tstopped some in the Glasgowscene being suspicious. Fact is,

they’re an amazing band, and ifconnections helped them get aleg up . . . so what?It may be the first band he’s

fronted, but Jack has all the swag-ger and stage presence of some-one that’s been at it for years. With hints of Elvis and Joe

Strummer, backed by a band witha vintage rock ’n’ roll feel, it maybe nothing new, but boy is it good!Jack knows how to perform,

and it’s not unsurprising he has aparallel career as a BAFTA-nominated actor (Young Adam,Dear Frankie, Nowhere Boy). It’s still so fresh that they only

played their first gig as JackTownes last week.Despite what some scenesters

think, they’re set to continue Scot-land’s line of great guitar bands.MORE: facebook.com/jacktow-nesmusicQ Hear Jim on Amazing Radio,Sunday 2-4pm (DAB digital radio& online) — jimgellatly.com
