FRENCH 9-9Y, 10-9Y, 20-9Y and 30-9YThe French as a Second Language (FSL) Program is a 9year program which begins in Grade 4 and continuesthrough to Grade 12. The French program focuses ondeveloping language competency and strategies forlanguage learning. Each year, students build upon priorknowledge, increasing their level of understanding of boththe spoken and written word and demonstratingknowledge of language conventions that are culturallyappropriate. Students also spend time learning aboutFrench culture and history and about the role thatlanguage learning plays in developing globalunderstanding.
WHY STUDY A SECOND LANGUAGE?• a variety of cultural and linguistic opportunities enhanceeducational experiences and prepare students to beglobal citizens
• a second language is an economic advantage in theglobal market and workplace
• learning a second language increases the ability to thinkcreatively and abstractly and allows for a greaterunderstanding of the people whose language is studied
• all international language courses at the 30 level areacceptable options for University of Alberta entrancerequirements
