OCTOBER 2014 4-H RAP SHEET
Invite a friend to join your 4-H club this year!
For the 75th consecutive year, millions
of youth, parents, volunteers and
alumni across the country will be
celebrating National 4-H Week
October 1-7.
4-H empowers youth to reach their full potential and to become true leaders through a wide range
of opportunities and experiences.
There are a variety of ways that local residents can be involved with 4-H. Clover Kids is a fun 4-H
program for children in grades Kindergarten through third where participants explore science,
strengthen motor skills, play games, make friends, learn together, and much more. 4-H is open to
youth in grades 4-12 and is designed to meet young people’s needs of belonging, mastery,
independence, and generosity through youth-adult partnerships and research-based
experiences. Both Clover Kids and 4-H programs are effective because of strong adult
volunteers.
Last year, in Fremont County, 82 children enrolled as Clover Kids, 189 were registered as 4-H
members, and 57 caring adults served as volunteers. Five traditional community clubs, including
Washington PEP, Riverside Rockets, WMP, Silver Skylarks and Riverton-Fisher, are in place in
Fremont County. Additionally, Fremont County we have a specialty club focused on safety and
education in shooting sports, the Fremont County Fletchings. Each of these clubs also has Clover
Kids chapters.

Midwest Heritage, a
subsidiary of Hy-Vee, Inc.,
is now accepting
applications for their
award-winning program to
help youth get a start in
the cattle industry.
The goal of the Midwest Heritage Youth Heifer Program is to help future young farmers gain interest and
knowledge of the beef cattle industry by awarding bred heifers to program recipients. Midwest Heritage
will grant up to five 7th and 8th graders, three bred heifers each. The program will span five years. During
this time, recipients are responsible for management of the herd including daily care, records and
breeding. At the conclusion of the five years, recipients are responsible for paying back the market value of
the three bred heifers. When submitting applications for the program, the participants are required to list
their goals for the program, their future, give descriptions of how they would promote it within their
communities and submit three letters of recommendation.
“This program provides an excellent opportunity for youth to increase their knowledge of agriculture,” said
Allan Bangtson, Midwest Heritage Senior Vice President and Senior Lender. “The program goal is for these
students to have established a foundation herd and gain financial self-sufficiency by the end of five years.”
Students in 7th and 8th grades from Fremont, Lucas, Madison, Wayne, Warren County are invited to apply.
Applications are being accepted until October 31, and can be found online at www.mhbank.com/youth-
heifer.
Fremont County 4-H’er, Kenna Howard, was one of last year’s honored recipients.
