VitaminDhasmanyfunctionsandpossiblehealthbenefits.Itaidsincalciumresorption;whichhelpsmaintainboneandteethandpreventosteoporosis.Itsupportstheimmunesystem,brainandnervoussystem.VitaminDregulatesinsulinlevelsandmayplayaprotectiveroleagainstdiabetes,cancerandmultiplesclerosis.BecauseofalltheprovenandpossiblerolesofVitaminD,itisimportanttopreventadeficiency.Unfortunately,theelderlyareatasignificantriskforVitaminDdeficiency.
HowmuchVitaminDshouldbeconsumed?Forolderadults,600-800IU(InternationalUnits)arerecommendedbytheInstituteofMedicine.Morerecently,therecommendedamountrangesfrom1000-4000IU’s.HowdowemaintainorraiseourlevelsofVitaminD?Onesimplewayissunexposure–therecommendationistositinthesunfor5-10minutes2-3dayseachweek.UsuallynotapossibilityinNorthDakotawintermonths.Luckily,thereareotherwaystogetad-equateVitaminD–dietandsupplementation.
DietarysourcesofVitaminDincludefishoil,fattyfish(salmon,herring,mackerelandsardines)egg,,mushrooms,tunaandfortifiedfoodssuchasmilk,yogurtandbreakfastcereals.WhendietaryVitaminDisinadequateand/orthereisadeficiency,supplementationisneeded.
VitaminDcanbefoundinaregularmultivitaminbutinlimitedquantities(minehas400IU’s);thereforeothersupplementsmaybeadded–thedesirableformofthisvitaminisD3.Ifyouhaveaconfirmeddeficiencybyabloodtest,yourphysicianmayinitiallyprescribehighdosesofVitaminDandthenatherapeuticdosetomaintainasafelevel.
SunlightisbestwayinprovidingourbodieswithVitaminD.Becauseweareunabletogetconsis-tentsunexposurethistimeofyear,trythesedietsuggestions:1)Breakfastcouldincludeseveralofthesefoods:milk,yogurt,breakfastcerealandegg.2)Attempttohavefattyfishforlunchandsupperafewtimesaweek.3)Drink3cupsofmilkperday(provides~100IU’spercup).

Our services include: Home Delivered Meals, Frozen Meals, Community Dining, Transpor-tation, Senior Centers, Outreach Assistance and Medicare Part D assistance. In addition, we distribute a monthly publication - The Silver Quill - detailing current and upcoming events of interest to the senior community.
