GOSPEL MEDITATION
ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

We all face obstacles in life. Perhaps it's a lost job, the death of a
loved one, a sudden accident that places an unexpected dent in our
finances. Some0mes the challenges are of our own making. Perhaps
we've developed pa1erns of sin in our personal lives or our family
rela0onships. We've all felt the jol0ng shock of, "This is all my fault."
How do these things affect our rela0onship with God? Or, perhaps
more poignantly, how do we now view God's rela0onship to us?
In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus' words to us are encouraging ones.
"No one can take them out of my hand." Did you catch that? In case
you didn't, Jesus reemphasizes the point again a few verses later.
"My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and
no one can take them out of the Father's hand." God's grip of
providen0al care and mercy is so strong that nothing can separate
us. We might think things take us out of God's hand life
circumstances, tragedy, our lukewarm a;tudes towards faith but
Jesus tells us otherwise. Nothing, no one, can take us out of the
Father's hand, and we can't take ourselves out! We can't remove
ourselves from Him, not en0rely. Even when grievous sin hardens
us to grace, His love is s0ll sustaining us in existence. And His mercy
is always awai0ng our repentance.
"My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I
give them eternal life, and they shall never perish." This Sunday, let
us heed the voice of the Good Shepherd. Whatever we feel might
take us from God's hand, we can turn back to Him. God is always
invi0ng us to follow Him and to trust in His care and be sustained by
His hand.

“Dear Friends, it is not always easy
to discern our voca#on and to steer
our life in the right direc#on. For this
reason, there needs to be a renewed
commitment on the part of the whole
Church priests, religious, pastoral
workers and educators to provide
young people in par#cular with
opportuni#es for listening and
discernment. There is a need for a
youth ministry and a voca#onal
promo#on that can open the way to
discovering God’s plan, above all
through prayer, medita#on on God’s
word, Eucharis#c adora#on and
spiritual accompaniment.
On this World Day of Prayer for
Voca#ons, let us join in prayer and
ask the Lord to help us discover his plan of love for our lives,
and to grant us the courage to walk in the path that, form the
beginning, he has chosen for each of us.”

We are planning for Alpha in the fall.
In the mean0me, here are some things our Alpha
guests had to say at the end of the last session: "The
facts about the Bible and Jesus in the first videos had
the most impact. How can people not believe when
they hear all those facts?" "I feel like these Alpha sessions
scratched the surface in answering the ques on 'Why am I
here?'" "Before the course I knew a lot of factual 0dbits about my
faith, but ...not really organized in my head...The way that the Al-
pha course was presented helped me to make sense of it all...to see
the big picture. Prior to the course, I ...could liken my many
'factoids' to leaves that were floa0ng around or piled up. Now I
have the tree to hang them on!" Our Alpha course is successful in
part to our hosts and helpers and, of course, to our Advocate, the
Holy Spirit!

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED
Ques=on: At a parish council mee0ng, our pastor men0oned the
need for deacons. It is something I am considering. How do I know if
I have a voca0on? What steps should I take next?
Answer: Any and all gi(s that the Holy Spirit gives to the church
are for the good of the community. As members of the Body of
Christ, what one member does affects all. What the body does also
affects each member. A voca0on or call to ministry is tested and
verified by the church. Through prayer, instruc0on, and service, a
voca0on is tested, and then acknowledged by the official call to
orders or to service.
If you are considering becoming a deacon, the first step would
be to talk to your pastor. He will be able to give you more specific
informa0on on the program in your diocese, what is expected of
you, and how you apply. You might also begin to see a spiritual
director, someone who can help you with your faith journey and
voca0on discernment. They do so by focusing on prayer, your
rela0onship with God, and spiritual prac0ces. Finally, you'll need to
see the diocesan voca0on director in charge of deacons to apply.
Best wishes!

Are you considering serving the Church as an Ordained Deacon? The
Church calls men to be deacons “inservice” to the People of God. If
you are a man (married or single), that feels this call and wants to
know more, please contact the Office for Diaconate Forma0on at
4147582207 or[email protected].

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK
When something delights us, it touches us
in a unique and special way. We are s0rred
within, filled with happiness, glee, and joy.
The object of our delight cap0vates us, and
we are eager, some0mes beyond words,
to obtain it. Have you ever been delighted
by your faith, the Gospel, God's Word, or
an encounter with God? The Gen0les were
delighted when they learned they were
sharers in the Good News and ecsta0c
that they were included. They recognized
their shepherd and realized that they
discovered something or someone unlike
any other before. We can easily become
lukewarm in our rela0onship with God and
forget just how lifechanging the Good
News of our faith really is. We are brought
to the springs of lifegiving water and
are gi(ed with something secular life
simply cannot provide: Jesus, the
Good Shepherd.
