Pros of Free-Flow Information
• Watchdog for government officials and any public figure– Arnold Schwarzenegger – Celebrities – Media itself
• Public records can lead to safety of communities• Social networking, staying connected with people
– Dating sites– Maintaining friendships
Cons of Free-Flow Information
• Denies ability to choose when to disclose something• Lack of ability to choose who knows what about you• Your past follows you because internet is forever• Data-mining, internet tracking, selling personal info• Concentration of information makes it easier for government to spy• We don’t realize how much information is out there
Identity Theft and Fraud• Internet accounts for less than half of ongoing identity frauds >> Privacy
experts estimated in 2000.• Your Social security number is all that is needed for thieves… Identity sites
abundant on the Internet• Most vulnerable to ID theft: Young adults 18 – 24• ID theft happens before ID fraud• Theft = steal personal information
Fraud = act under fake name using your info• Thieves get details from social networking sites • No national law to address this issue• Examples: Dana Thornton creates nasty Facebook page in his name to trash
ex-boyfriend• Jesus Felix, created 130 fake Facebook profiles and posted Craigslist ads to
harass his ex-girlfriend
Watchdog Privacy
• Privacy on a personal level• Relates to public records and safety of
communities and the "watchdog effect“• Evaluated the privacy (or lack thereof) of
the website itself
Watchdog Privacy
