This catalogue, as amended by any posted notices
or oral announcements during the sale, is the
Vancouver Art Gallery’s (Gallery) entire agreement
for the offer and purchase of property designated
by lot number listed herein. The following
Conditions and Terms of Sale are the complete and
only conditions and terms governing the property
offered for sale by this auction.
LIVeAnDSILenTAuCTIOn
1. The Gallery reserves the right to withdraw any
property before sale and to assign any lot to a
silent or live auction.
2. Unless otherwise announced by Barry Scott
(the auctioneer), all bids are per lot as
numbered in the catalogue.
3. The Gallery or auctioneer reserves the
right to reject any bid. The highest bidder
acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be
the purchaser. In the event of any dispute
between bidders, or in the event of doubt on
the Gallery’s part as to the validity of any bid,
the auctioneer will have the final discretion
either to determine the successful bidder or to
re-offer and resell the property in dispute. If any
dispute arises after the sale, at the discretion
of the Gallery, its sales record is conclusive. The
Gallery will execute order bids as a convenience
to prospective purchasers bidding using an
absentee bid form. However, the Gallery is not
responsible for any act or omissions therewith.
4. Each lot is offered subject to a reserve or
estimated price, which is the minimum price
below which such lot will not be sold. If bids are
below the reserve or estimated value of the lot
offered, the auctioneer may reject the same and
withdraw the lot from the sale or if in the case
of non-reserved lots, may accept the bid, and if,
having acknowledged an opening bid, decides
that any advance thereafter is insufficient, may
reject the advance and withdraw the lot from
further bidding.
5. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer a sale
occurs and the highest bidder acknowledged
by the auctioneer will be required to sign
a purchase confirmation or, if the bidder is
not present, to confirm the purchase by the
appropriate designated means, at which time
title to the offered lot will pass to the highest
bidder, subject to fulfillment by such bidder of
all conditions set forth herein, and thereupon
(a) assumes full risk and responsibility
therefore, and (b) will pay the full purchase
price. All sales are final—no purchase can be
returned, refunded or exchanged. Payment
will not be deemed to have been made in
full until the Gallery has collected funds
by authenticated credit card payments or
if auctioned items are paid for by cheque,
presentation of a credit card is also required to
guarantee payment.
6. Unless exempted by law, the purchaser will be
required to pay all taxes payable by being the
successful bidder for any lot.
7. These Conditions and Terms of Sale as well as
the purchaser’s and the Gallery’s respective
rights and obligations hereunder shall be
governed by and construed and enforced in
accordance with the laws of the Province of
British Columbia. By bidding at this auction,
whether present in person or by an agent, order
bid, or other means, the purchaser shall be
deemed to have consented to the jurisdiction of
the courts of the Province of British Columbia.
8. Neither Barry Scott nor the Gallery shall be
responsible for the acts or omissions of its
employees, agents nor any carriers or packers
of purchased lots. Packaging and handling of
purchased lots by the Gallery or its employees,
agents or designates is at the entire risk of the
purchaser. In no event will the Gallery’s liability
to a purchaser exceed the purchase price
actually paid and Barry Scott shall have no
liability in these circumstances whatsoever.
9. The Gallery assumes no responsibility for the
authenticity of the authorship of any property
listed in this catalogue including, but not limited
to, the identity of the creator or the period,

culture, source, or origin, as the case may be, of
any lot. All lots are sold “as is,” and the Gallery
makes no warranties or representations of the
genuineness or attribution of any lot nor any
warranties or representations of the correctness
of the catalogue or other description of
the physical condition, size, quality, rarity,
importance, provenance, exhibitions,
literature, or historical relevance of any lot,
and no statement anywhere, whether oral or
written, shall be deemed such a warranty or
representation. Prospective bidders should
inspect the lot before bidding to determine its
condition, size and whether or not it has been
repaired or restored. The Gallery makes no
representation or warranty as to whether the
purchaser acquires any reproduction rights in
the property.

In a recurring motif that typifies beauty, elegance and transformation, the butterfly played a prominent role in the work
of Jack Shadbolt. As Shadbolt wrote, “I saw the butterfly as a powerful symbol of the natural and spiritual will to survive
through change and transformation—a symbol all the more potent in contrast with the fragile and ephemeral beauty of
its subject.” His many works in this theme provide poignant metaphors of the cycle of life.

Estimated value: $12,500
This fine mid-19th century Haida plate is made from argillite, a carbonaceous shale quarried on Slatechuck Mountain
near Skidegate village on Haida Gwaii, also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands. The rich, soft black slate is found in
only one location in the world. Haida artists began carving argillite to produce works for trade and sale to Euro-
Americans in the 1820s, evolving in subject and format through to the 1920s. From this material a new tradition evolved,
with the form and subject of the object changing almost decade by decade in response to market demand.

Sorel Etrog began formal art training in Tel Aviv after immigrating to Israel from Romania. A chance meeting with a
collector resulted in a solo show in Toronto in 1959. Etrog became a Canadian citizen in 1963 and was chosen to
represent Canada at the 1966 Venice Biennale. Crafted primarily in bronze and more recently in rolled sheet metal,
Etrog’s sculptures are reminiscent of the structures of the human body or of the massive bolts and hinges of heavy
machinery, always suggesting a latent potential for movement.

Frank Hans Johnston began pursuing landscape painting before World War I with early sketching trips around Toronto
and farther north to Algonquin Park and to Hearst, north of Lake Superior. Although affiliated with the Group of Seven,
he announced his official resignation in 1924, saying he had no disagreement with the Group but wanted to go his own
way. Johnston’s style became increasingly realistic throughout his life with a particular fascination for the qualities of
light reflected from snow. This theme recurred in later works, particularly in his large narrative paintings of the 1930s
and 1940s. Johnston was able to achieve considerable financial success in his own lifetime.
