The Fact Book provides answers to many ofthe most commonly asked questions about thecampus and it includes the most current informationavailable for an academic or fiscal year, as well aspertinent historical information.
The 2015 Fact Book represents a continuingeffort to improve the quality and accessibility ofinformation about the University. The Fact Book aswell other data and reports is also available atwww.uhs.edu.pk .

Established in 2002, the University of HealthSciences Lahore, most often referred to by its acronym‘UHS’, is the largest health sciences educationalinstitution in Pakistan with over 60000 registeredstudents and 70+ affiliated institutions. Together, thefive faculties offer around 100 programmes of study inmedicine, dentistry, pharmacy, allied health sciencesand nursing.
The university regulates and coordinates theactivities of medical education, training & research inhealthcare throughout the province of Punjab. It is alsothe provincial authority which conducts Medical CollegeAdmission Test (MCAT) every year for admission to allpublic and private sector medical and dental collegesof the province.
University has been placed at No.2 in HigherEducation Commission of Pakistan's National UniversityRanking for 2012 and 2013 consecutively in the fieldof medical and health sciences and at No.8 among alluniversities and higher education institutions ofPakistan. With regards to quality assurance procedures,the University has been placed in top “W” category byHEC in 2014.
The motivational force of the University'sresearch activities is financially and politicallyindependent, i.e. free basic research; however, specificcollaborative endeavours with other institutions,national as well as international, also have a place

among the countless research activities. The Universityis mainly focusing on higher research degreeprogrammes in Basic Medical Sciences, Allied HealthSciences and Nursing.
UHS is research-intensive. Its ethos from itsbeginning has been to produce highly relevant researchthat solves real health problems and improve people’squality of life. At present extensive on-campus researchis going on in different areas including diseases suchas Asthma, Diabetes, Tuberculosis, Typhoid, Infertility,Environmental Pollution, various types of Cancer,Genetic Disorders, Consanguinity, DNA Analysis,Developmental Abnormalities, Metabolic Syndromes,Hepatitis B & C, Liver and Renal Disorders. A high-tech Resource Lab and an Experimental Research Lab(Animal House) have been established for researchpurposes.
Internationalization is an essential elementfor the future development of UHS. For the University,internationalization means providing students withopportunities for gaining international experience andfor developing the skills to function effectively in theworld. Within a short time of its formation, theUniversity has developed collaboration with severalInternational Institutes. Prominent among them areDuke University, University of Texas Houston,University of Pittsburgh, Center of Disease Control(CDC) Atlanta, University of Liverpool, University ofGlasgow, University of Nottingham, University of ReimFrance and University of Muenster Germany.
University of Health Sciences is now muchmore than a health sciences’ institution: It is a placethat prepares students for success in an increasinglycomplex and interconnected global society.

Legal Status:The University
was established by theUniversity of HealthSciences LahoreOrdinance,2002 (LVIIIof 2002). It’s a publicsector university recognized by theHigher Education Commission ofPakistan, Pakistan Medical and DentalCouncil, and included in the Directory of the WorldHealth Organization.
Jurisdiction:The University exercises its powers conferred
on it by or under its Ordinance within the territoriallimits of the Province of the Punjab. Its Section 37reads:
“All medical institutions, whether in publicor private sector, located within the geographicalboundaries of the Province of the Punjab, whetheraffiliated with any other university, examinationboard or a medical faculty, notwithstanding anythingcontained in any other law for the time being in force,shall affiliate with the University within such periodand on such terms and conditions, as may beprescribed.”
Statutory Role:The primary role of the university, as
specified in the Ordinance 2002, includes provisionof instruction and dissemination of knowledge,advancement of research, prescription of courses ofstudies, holding of examination, award of degrees,diplomas, certificates and other destinations,establishment of institutes, colleges, centres oflearning for the development of teaching andresearch.
