Regarded as one of the longest runninganimated sitcoms ever to land onprimetime, The Flintstones served as thecatalyst for animated series production, being the first cartoons to utilize a fullstoryline for the whole 30 minutes, aswell as using never before seentechniques in animation, that were laterused in the succeeding years.
In 1968, Miles Laboratory, makers of "One-A-Day" brand of vitamins and developers
of Chocks, the first chewablemultivitamins, acquired the Flintstones
brand mainly as a marketing strategy toengage kids into taking multivitamins.
Originally, The charactersincluded on the roster of
the multivitamins wereFred, Wilma, Barney,
Bamm-Bamm, Pebbles andFred's Car AKA The
Flintmobile. One reasonwhy Betty was not included
in the production was thather resemblance with
Wilma were too close tocreate a distinctive shape.
Rosie O'Donnell, the actress whoplayed Betty in the 1994 movieadaptation, was one of the vocalsupporters of "Bite Into Betty", acampaign that helped launchthe inclusion of said character tothe vitamin line-up. Thecampaign was a landslide, gaining 91 percent of the entirecount, in favor of bringing Bettyinto the bottle, and replacing theFlintmobile for good.
The popularity of the Flintstonesdidn’t just lead them intomultivitamins stardom, but alsoto multimillion enterprise. Asidefrom the famous chewablesupplement for kids, TheBedrock “native” family alsolaunched multiplemerchandising business for toys, novelty items, cereal brands, clothing line…
... And even this. That’s right! The Flintstones evenendorsed (and smoked)Winston.
