How to Become a CFP® Certificant7-Step Process:
1) Complete the OU CFP Board-Registered Education Program
2) Pass the CFP® Certification Examination
3) Meet the Experience Requirement (3 yrs full time relevant financial planning experience)
4) Have a bachelors degree
5) Adhere to the Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility and Pass Background Check
6) Pay Certification Fees
7) Receive authorization to use the CFP®, CERTIFIED
FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and marks.
Apply for Challenge Status
Certain degrees and professional credentials fulfill the educational requirement and allow you to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination.
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) - inactive license acceptable • Licensed attorney - inactive license acceptable • Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®) • Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) • Ph.D. in business or economics• Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU)
We have several students in program who could challenge but choose to go through all or part of our program. They typically realize that their knowledge is not extensive enough to handle the CFP ® Exam.
Bachelor’s Degree Requirement for CFP® Certification
NOTE: Effective from March 1, 2007, candidates for certification must have a bachelor's degree, in any discipline,
from a regionally-accredited U.S. college or universityin order to obtain CFP® certification.
The college degree requirement is a condition of initial certification; it is not a requirement to be eligible to take the CFP® Certification Examination and does not have to occur before sitting for the exam or fulfilling the work experience.
International Degrees
• International degrees may be substituted for a U.S. undergraduate degree if they receive equivalency from a third-party evaluation agency which is a member of National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) www.NACES.org.
• You will need to request a document-by-document evaluation. (source – www.cfp.net.become/education.asp)

direct support, teaching or personal delivery of all or part of the personal financial planning process to a client.”

CFP Board maintains a list of review courses, offered by independent firms, designed to assist individuals in preparing for the CFP® Certification Examination. (go to www.cfp.net for more information).
Virtually all graduates of any CFP Board-Registered Education Program, including graduates of Oglethorpe’s program, take a review course.
Why? The review courses specifically target getting you ready for the exam & help to assimilate & reinforce the very broad amount of information that you have digested over the previous six courses.

• Deadline? You will want to enroll as soon as possible so you can purchase your textbook from the publisher and have it for the first class.
• We would prefer to have your application by March 7, 2011.
• Upon acceptance into the Financial Planner Program, we will send you a welcome letter, a Student Handbook and a copy of your approved application.
• Manuals are distributed at the first class.
