TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – OCTOBER 3, 2021
“FILL US WITH YOUR LOVE, O LORD,
AND WE WILL SING FOR JOY.” – PSALM 90
Today, in the Gospel of Mark, we hear Jesus being tested by the Pharisees with a question regarding
divorce. Jesus understood that this question was not raised in order to discover the truth, but rather to
discover a reason to trap him in his response. Jesus acknowledges that Moses, in the Law, permitted divorce
due to the hardness of hearts. However, Jesus affirms that from the beginning, God intended the bond of
marriage to reflect the gift of love and mutual support shared between a man and a woman. This original
intention of the gift of marital love is affirmed and mercifully strengthened by the graces of God and the gifts of
the Holy Spirit. Grace is the divine gift that strengthens the commitment and vows of a husband and wife to
fidelity in all the moments of life – in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad. Abundant grace reflects
the desire of God to bless and affirm the gift of self shared by a husband and wife.
May God – Father, Son, Holy Spirit – abundantly bless you and your families in these coming weeks!
In Christ,
Fr. Ted Prentice, Pastor

OUR RELATIONSHIP TO OUR WORLD: POPE FRANCIS ON CLIMATE CHANGE
Excerpt from his encyclical letter, Laudato Si: On the Care for our Common Home published in May, 2015
...People no longer seem to believe in a happy future; they
no longer have blind trust in a better tomorrow based on the
present state of the world and our technical abilities. There is
a growing awareness that scientific and technological progress
cannot be equated with the progress of humanity and history, a
growing sense that the way to a better future lies elsewhere. This is
not to reject the possibilities which technology continues to offer
us. But humanity has changed profoundly, and the accumulation of
constant novelties exalts a superficiality which pulls us in one
direction. It becomes difficult to pause and recover depth in life. If
architecture reflects the spirit of an age, our megastructures and
drab apartment blocks express the spirit of globalized technology,
where a constant flood of new products coexists with a tedious
monotony. Let us refuse to resign ourselves to this, and continue to
wonder about the purpose and meaning of everything. Otherwise
we would simply legitimate the present situation and need new
forms of escapism to help us endure the emptiness. #113

“I REALIZED MY NOTHINGNESS IN THE FACE OF ALL THAT
SOMETHINGNESS,” says parishioner, Frank Gemmato, who along with
caregiver, Will Rice were fortunate enough to be in the first Lourdes
pilgrimage since the travel closure due to COVID. Will and Frank were
schedule to travel to France in 2020, so this long-awaited journey had even
more meaning for them. Following strict pandemic procedures, they and
360 other infirm and caregivers from around the globe spent seven days at
the holy shrine, following a daily routine of Mass, prayer, and a blessed
immersion in sacred rituals and holy celebrations. Coordinated and
sponsored by the Knights of Malta, a religious order dedicated to caring for
pilgrims, the Malades (the French word for “sick”) and their caregivers were
treated with kindness and reverence every step of the way.
Will perceived how, starting on day one, his, Frank’s and the other pilgrims’
purposes for being there went from “I want to be healed physically, to a
healing of faith—the miracle of Lourdes. All seven days, it was grace upon
grace upon grace. We didn’t focus on physical healing anymore.
Even the teens,” (who were also Malades) observed Will,
“remarked how this was the most incredible experience of their
lives.”
Photographs taken by Knights of Malta member, Peter Scuder and
arranged for publication by member, Cheryl Hungate.
PARISHIONERS FIND PEACE AND COMFORT AT LOURDES
Above: Will Rice stands next to Frank Gemmato, offering up prayer to Our
Lady. Middle: Frank, with Will’s help, carted his guitar all the way to
Lourdes, so he could offer his prayer as song, sharing the gift of musical
talent he was given in his life. Frank played for those in his hotel, for
Masses, and for the Mother of God. Right: So many happy, joyful
moments so many memories, so many blessings.

Frank and all of the
Malades were
blessed with the
sacrament of
reconciliation and
with washing of
their feet in the holy
waters of Lourdes.
