FIJI CHESS FEDERATION
2014 PRESIDENT’S REPORT
I have much pleasure in presenting the 2014 President’s Report in my capacity as
Acting President of Fiji Chess Federation (FCF). I endeavor to capture the
accomplishments and challenges of the previous year, and provide an outlook for the
year ahead.
In January, FCF held its Annual General Meeting in Suva, setting the tone for an
exciting year ahead.
In February, Calvin Prasad and Gloria Sukhu attended a Trainer’s and Arbiter’s
Seminar in Honiara, Solomon Islands. The duo successfully attained FIDE Instructor
(FI) and FIDE Arbiter (FA), and National Instructor (NI) and FA titles, respectively.
Their participation was made possible by funding from Global Chess. FCF is grateful
to the support from Geoffrey Borg and Casto Abundo, as well as the hospitality of
the Solomon Islands Chess Federation.
Fiji Chess was in the national spotlight later in February, with the nomination of five
players and officials in various categories of the Fiji Sports Awards. Menash Fareed
won the Young Male Athlete of the Year award, and Fiji Chess Federation received
the Prime Minister’s Award.
In May, FCF hosted a Trainer’s Seminar in Suva, attended by 22 participants. 19
participants received Trainer Titles from FIDE. Manoj Kumar, Jashint Maharaj and
John Caldiera received FI titles. This Seminar was made possible by funding from
Global Chess, and was conducted by Geoffrey Borg.
Also in May, FCF completed and published a 4‐year Strategic Development Plan. This
is available for download from the FCF website.
In June, FCF sent two juniors Zen Borg and Jacqueline Masilomani to participate in
the 15th ASEAN+ Age Group Championship, in Macau. They were accompanied by
Gloria Sukhu. This trip was made possible by support from Ignatius Leong and
Kasparov Chess Foundation Asia‐Pacific (KSFAP).
Fiji Chess icon Virgilio De Asa officially retired from his position as President, after 35
years of service to FCF. Dr De Asa had been the backbone of Fiji Chess since
inception in 1979, leading FCF for 35 years. His prolific leadership saw a large
number of local chess players attain International ratings and Titles. He was retained

as Captain of the Olympiad Open Team, and FIDE Delegate.
In July, FCF commenced a 4‐year Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with KSFAP,
whereas the latter would provide a grant towards Fiji’s Chess‐In‐Schools (CIS)
program.
In August, FCF sent an Open and Women’s Team to participate in the 41st Chess
Olympiad in Tromso, Norway. The Open Team consisted Calvin Prasad, Manoj
Kumar, Sanmogam Goundar, Taione Sikivou and Jasvindar Singh. The Women’s
Team comprised Keiran Lyons, Gloria Sukhu, Hilda Vukikomoala and Arti Sewak.
Jashint Maharaj accompanied the team and became the first Arbiter from Fiji to
officiate at an Olympiad. FCF received a Travel Subsidy from the Tromso Olympiad
Organisers, and a grant from the Fiji National Sports Commission.
The Captain’s report on this event is available from the Fiji Chess website. The
highlight of the Olympiad was the Women’s Team defying all odds and finishing
higher than their initial ranking.
FCF decided to rate all local tournaments in 2014 using FIDE’s rating system,
primarily due to inconsistency in maintaining our own rating list. This resulted in 8
FIDE Rapid events and 1 FIDE Standard event in 2014. The number of players
registered under Fiji grew from 27 (January 1st), to 119 (December 31st).
The following tournaments were organized in Suva throughout the year:
Tappoo City Blitz Open;
Kundan Singh Open (7‐round Swiss/1‐day/FIDR);
Brijlal Open (7‐round Swiss/1‐day/FIDR);
Primary & Secondary Schools Chess Championship;
Mohammed Badshah Memorial Open (7‐round Swiss/1‐day/FIDR);
Rajnesh Parmeshwar Memorial Open (7‐round Swiss/1‐day/FIDR);
FMF U20 Chess Championship;
Fiji Bitter Chess Open (7‐round Swiss/1‐day/FIDR);
Fiji National Teams Open; and
SportsWorld Fiji National Chess Championship (9‐round Swiss/5‐day/FIDE)
In December, the SportsWorld Fiji National Chess Championship attracted 33
participants, and prizes were awarded in Open, Women and Junior categories. This
FIDE‐rated event saw 11‐year old Gor Nahapetyan acquiring a FIDE rating of 1611. A
stellar performance was registered by 16‐year‐old Cydel Terubea, who defeated

2015 OUTLOOK
The Fiji Chess Federation (FCF) Executive Committee (EC) has set achievable goals for
2015. The purpose of 2015 Outlook is to provide a preview on our plans.
Governance takes priority, where fundamental changes are needed to ensure our
transformation into an effective and professional organisation. Our long‐term goal is
to ensure FCF is self‐sustainable in four years.
Junior Development and Chess‐In‐Schools are the new focus areas, with exciting
prospects if our plans are implemented successfully.
Every year, FCF plans to publish:
A Long‐Term Strategic Plan
An Annual Business Plan
A Report against the Annual Business Plan
While the Long‐Term Strategic Plan would not require constant amendment, it is
important to keep in mind our changing environment as we plan for the future.
The Executive Committee at a meeting on January 25, 2015 made a series of new
resolutions:
Monthly Finance Report procedures
Tournament & Grand Prix Regulations, with Prize Schedule
2015 Annual Business Plan and Budget 2015‐18
Purchase of Computer and Chess Equipment
As a new initiative, Minutes of all meetings will be available for download from the
FCF website, together with all Annexes. This will be uploaded once Minutes are
confirmed. We want Members and Partners to always be aware of the decisions
made by the EC, and to be assured that such decisions have been made for the
benefit of Fiji Chess.
New Activities planned for 2015 are as follows:
Grand Prix
16 Tournaments approved, 4 Standard FIDE Events, 7 Rapid FIDE Events
Specialty Chess trophies for 18 place‐getters per tournament, printed certificates for all participants, other prizes dependent on sponsors
