THIS WEEK AT THE PARISH
Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 16, 2017
Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 23, 2017
First Reading: Wisdom 12: 13, 16-19
This passage from the Book of Wisdom addresses itself to God,
giving praise and thanksgiving for his mercy.
Second Reading: Romans 8:26-27
Paul indicates that since people are, in general, unaccustomed
to the manner of praying, of speaking directly to God, the Holy
Spirit will intercede for them.
Gospel: Matthew 13:24-43
According to Matthew, Jesus speaks of the “reign of God’ in three parables: the man who soweth good seed, the mustard seed, and the yeast. In each parable, Jesus demonstrates that once the “reign of God” had been established, it grew and spread.

St. Patrick Church
Men: Jesus needs you
Men, Mary, our Mother, said, “My spirit rejoices in God my savior, for He has looked with favor on His lowly servant.” And men, because of Mary’s perfect YES, our salvation, our King, our love, that is Jesus, came into the world and remains with us. Men, these words from Luke chapter 1 are the words which Mary herself used to explain her incredible experience to Elizabeth, and they are also the words men use to express the honor of serving Him as His priest. Can you feel the power of these words? Now this is not a plea for numbers. We should never desire to live a vocation other than the one God, Himself, desires for us. But for many reasons, the total number of priests (diocesan and religious) in the United States has dropped 35% over the past 50 years, from 59,000 in 1965 to 38,000 in 2014. Men, we live in a culture, described by Pope Francis, where everything is provisional or temporary, where people are encouraged to pursue their dreams, but leave a “door open” in case it does not work out and where “self-realization” is measured by money and power, not by fidelity to the Gospel and Gospel values. Can you feel the power of those words? Men, at the end of our lives, the only thing we will take with us is our relationship with God, everything else stays. Our relationship with God is the only thing that matters, it is the only thing that will EVER matter. Marriage is a beautiful vocation and many of us are called to it. But it is not the default. There is no default vocation. God’s desire for us is uniquely ours and it is made known to us, if we only listen and embrace His love. But, what does it mean to love God? If you love someone, you want to do what they care about. Love is not passive. If God is Love, then all He wants to do is bring good-ness into peoples’ lives. So we love God by taking part in His effort of loving, by taking part in what God brings into peoples’ lives. We accomplish this by surrendering our will to His and by making what is good and true the most important matters that we are con-cerned with in our own lives and we do them intentionally. We ask ourselves, “What are the ways that I can behave that are better aligned with the Lord’s love.” That is loving God. How will we align ourselves with the Lord’s love? Does “fidelity to the Gospel and Gospel values” sound good “for someone else” or is it something you can build your life around? Can you surrender your will to the God of Love? “My spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has looked with favor on His lowly servant.” It all begins with these words… our Mother’s words… our words. If any of this resonates with anyone, if it inspires questions, if it stirs your Spirit, please contact the Parish Office for information and advice. Peace, Andrew

A reflection from our seminarian, Andrew,
The Pain of Grief.
Is there anything else that aches so much for so long? In all my experiences, I haven’t found it. Our love for the one we lost is foundational. It defines us. It is a love ”born” specifically for them. It can't be transferred, it can't be mitigated, it can’t be lessened, it is unconditional. And now we feel that this unconditional love that we hold for them has no outlet. This is grief. This is the pain of grief. And that’s why nothing can be said to make your grief go away. It doesn't work like that. How does it work? Hold on to the relationship that you have with Jesus. And if right now it is just a relationship with you being angry, fine, He can take it. He loves you. He is grieving with you right now.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
I would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to your generous
response to the Soles4Souls shoe collection. With your help, over
400 pairs of shoes have been given a second (or in some cases a
first-thank you!) life. They will make a huge difference to our
brothers and sisters in impoverished parts of the world who often
lack access to even the most bare necessities like shoes.
In gratitude,
Birgit Mitsch
The parish liaison program with Atlantic Health is in full swing.
When checking into ANY Atlantic Health facility, only a verbal ap-
proval is needed to notify the parish. Simply identify yourself as a
member of St. Patrick Parish and ask them to notify us. They will
contact Deb, the St. Patrick Parish pastoral associate on the liai-
son team. Currently, Atlantic Healthcare is the only group in the
area offering this liaison program at this time.
A note from Fr. Raimundo,
Our Lady of Victories Church
Shrine of St. Jude
Please express my gratitude and appreciation to the parish fami-
ly of St. Patrick for the generous monetary donation for our fami-
lies who lost everything to the fire back in April.
We would like to share with you a picture we took when they
came on Tuesday, June 20th. You can see the happiness on
their faces when we gave each of the families a check for their
share from all the donations collected on their behalf.
Your gifts definitely will make their lives better after this tragedy.
In their name I say “Thank You”.
Please keep all of us at Our Lady of Victories in your prayers
and we promise to remember you in our prayers.
Blessings!
The Peace of Jesus be with you,
Rev. Raimundo Rivera

Catechists/Co-Catechists Needed
Please consider joining our Faith Formation Team! In addition to catechists and co-catechists, we have many different needs where
your time and talent would be greatly appreciated. Classroom assistants assist the catechist with planned activities and crafts during
class time. They do not prepare lessons or teach. Safety Monitors help to maintain a safe and friendly environment during class time,
working as a liaison between the catechists, parents and students. Buddies are teens that assist children with special needs so that
these students can be successful in Faith Formation class. They help with crafts, completing worksheets and facilitating class activi-
ties. Teens that volunteer as buddies are students in grades 7-12. Liturgy of the Word with Children and Children’s Church leaders
are needed to lead children, ages 3 through 9, in prayer and discussion of the Sunday readings at a level easy for young children to
understand. It is offered at the 9 am mass from September through May. Office help is also needed occasionally to help prepare
crafts, worksheets and other materials to support our wonderful catechists throughout the school year. A list of office help volunteers
will be compiled and as assistance is needed, an email will go out requesting volunteers. No formal commitment is needed.

Songs of Thanksgiving in Isaiah
Isaiah 44:23 (NKJV)
23 Sing, O heavens, for the Lord has done it! Shout, you lower parts of the earth;
Break forth into singing, you mountains, O forest, and every tree in it!
For the Lord has redeemed Jacob, And glorified Himself in Israel.
Isaiah 48:20 (NKJV)
20 Go forth from Babylon! Flee from the Chaldeans! With a voice of singing, Declare, proclaim this,
Utter it to the end of the earth; Say, “The Lord has redeemed
His servant Jacob!”
Isaiah 49:13 (NKJV)
13 Sing, O heavens! Be joyful, O earth!
And break out in singing, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted His people,
And will have mercy on His afflicted.

From the desk of Dr. Deb,
Why do the priest and deacon kiss the altar before Mass
begins?
The priest and deacon kiss the altar because it symbolizes
Jesus. The same is true with the text of the Gospel. After the
priest reads the Gospel, he kisses the text. A third kiss can
be found at all liturgies. Although we may shake hands, the ac-
tion is called the “Kiss of Peace.” We kiss items where we find
Christ: on the altar in His Body and Blood, in the Book of the
Gospels which contains His word and in Christ who is present in
each of us.
