Umzinto brought to a halt
>> Umzinto Testing Centre Action Committee and riot police eyeball each otherSETON THOMPSON>>[email protected]
THE main street of Umzinto— one day to be officiallynamed Nelson Mandela
Street, so it has been said — wasbrought to a halt between 4.30pmand5pmonThursday16January,as public order police and mem-bersof theUmzintoTestingCentreAction Committee (Uteca) wran-gled face to face with each other.
The confrontation was set offwhen the Uteca members arrivedat the Umzinto Dining Hall for ameeting for which they believedthey had booked the hall, somedays previously.
However, when theUteca com-mittee members arrived, theyweredeniedentranceandUmdonimanager Pooven Pillay confirmedthe municipality’s belief that thebooking had not been confirmedby a payment. Calls to the mayor
andtopmanagementcouldnot re-solve the situation and riot policeon the scene did not augur well. The Uteca delegation was con-vincedtitwasapoliticallymotivat-ed action by the municipality toprevent Uteca, with which it is inconflict, from holding its meeting.
The cavalcade of vehicles, jammedat theentrance to thehall, set off down Umzinto main streetand halted and spread out acrossthe intersection with Monkey
Road. Within minutes, the roadwas blocked off by driving schoolvehicles, taxis, trucks and policevehicles.
A shoutingmatch eruptedwithconfrontation between Uteca andthe police, while the municipality, whichhadplayeda leadingpart inthe outcome, was nowhere to beseen. Eventually, municipal au-thorities briefed on the stalemate, gave in and the delayed meetingstarted around 5.45pm.

DEMANDSbytheUmzintoTestingCentreAction Committee (Uteca) for UmdoniMunicipalManagerXolaniLuthuli tobe
fired have ratcheted up over the December re-cess.
Utecaplannedmajorstreetdemonstrationsin the Umdoni area on 4 December, 2013, butthedeathof formerPresidentNelsonMandela, the next day, curtailed this. The festive seasonclosely followed, but with 2014 now on track, hostilities have resumed.
On Thursday evening 16 January, a Utecameeting to report back to and consult the com-munity featured strong criticism of UmdoniMunicipality and Luthuli in particular. He wasdescribed by lead speakers such as chairmanLuluMemelaandlocalSouthAfricanMunicipalWorkers’ Union chairmanSkumbuzoNgwaneas the key target behindall six demandswhichUtecahas laidat thedoorofUmdoni,Cogtaandthe premier’s office.
After detailing themunicipalmanager’s re-sponsibility for virtually all of UmdoniMunici-pality’sactivities,Uteca’ssecondcomplaintde-mands the removal of Luthuli from that postand his replacement by an interim appointeewhile other issues are investigated.
Inwhatappeared tobeabroadeningofUte-ca’sallegationsanddemands,Ngwanetold themeeting that the cost of upgrading the currenttesting centre in Umzinto had risen fromR1,4 million to around R2,4 million. This hadhappenedonLuthuli’swatchandhadallegedlyresulted from work which should have beencarried out by themunicipality, but which hadbeen diverted to an outside contractor.
Ngwane argued that apart from raisingquestions over the legitimacy of such actions,a key consequence had been that work on thecontracthadgroundtoahalt.Themeetingwasasked tosuggestwhatactionUtecashould takeandconsensuswas that thedemands, particu-larly the removalofLuthuli, shouldbepursuedwith increasing intensity, particularly in thelight of the upcoming general election.

Alien trees removed
SONJA NELL>>[email protected]
THE trees along Beach Road in Amanzimtotiwhich are being removed will possibly makewayforpalmtreestoaddatropicalatmosphereto the area.
Ward97CouncillorAndréBeetgeconfirmedthatadecisionwasmadebytheeThekwiniMu-nicipalitytoremovethetrees,butsaidthatresi-dentscanrestassuredthattheywillbereplacedby more appropriate trees.
“Fifteen mature Cassurina trees are in theprocess of being removed along Beach Road.Thereasonforthis is thatCassurinaisacatego-ry-two invader that has, largely due to igno-rance, been planted at various locations alongthe coastline. The removal of these trees hasbeen long in the planning — similar to thoseremoved fromRogiesPark in2013,and formspart of the municipality’s ecological mandateof alien invader removal and replacementwith indigenous trees,” Beetge said in a state-ment.
However, unaware of the municipality’splans, some residents voiced their dismay tothe Fever.
“I’mnotatreehuggerwhowillmakeanoiseabout just anything, but this is outrageous. Why cut these beautiful, shady trees down? Are theyat least going tobe replacedwithoth-er trees?” asked a concerned resident, whowishes to remain anonymous.
While the eThekwini Municipality has ex-tended preference to the trees being replacedwith Red Milkwood, after consulting with theSapphire Coast Tourism body, requests havebeenmadethat theyalsoexplore thepossibili-
ty of planting speciesof indigenouspalm,how-ever a decision has yet to be taken.
“My first reaction when the municipalitysaid itwants to replace the treeswithRedMilk-wood was, is it a messy tree and does it bearfruit?Theanswer is, yes it does.Mysuggestionis that they rather plant palm trees. I think thatpalm trees will compliment the area along thelines of adding a tropical feel. It will contributeto theholidayatmosphereonewants toexperi-ence when at the coast,” said Sapphire CoastTourism Chairman, Jacques van Schalkwyk.
According to the eThekwini Municipality, the removed Cassurina trees will be cut intomanageable sections and applied towardsdune rejuvenation, starting from the parkingarea north of the water park continuing in thedirection of Pipeline beach.

Winkle dunesrevived>> ‘Stabilising the dunes involves multiple actions’
SONJA NELL>>[email protected]
FOR many residents who own or live inhomes on the shoreline, the degenera-tionofdunes isamajorconcern. InSouth
Africaformaldunerehabilitationprogrammesdo exist, but not significant ones being run inNew Zealand, Australia and the United Statesfor instance.
It is for this reason that Jan and Zeele Pauwstarted maintaining and rehabilitating thedunes in front of their Winklespruit house inEllcockRoadaboutthreeyearsago.Dunespro-videhabitat forspecialisedplantsandanimals, including rare and endangered species.
“Stabilising the dunes involves multiple ac-tions. Firstly planting vegetation reduces thedegenerating impactofwindandwater.Wood-en fences canhelp retain sandandothermate-rial needed for ahealthy sand-dune ecosystemand lastly, building footpathsprotect thedunesfromdamage from foot traffic,” Zeele explains.
Sand dunes are an important part of thecoastas theyare land’s firstdefenceagainst the
forces of theocean says Jan.
The pas-sionate duo in-spired theirneighbours toalso get in-volved.
“If we don’tdoit,whowill?”asks Jan.
Lookingback on theirwork over thethree years, they are
pleased with the results.“It is hardwork and very costly. We employ
a teamof eight guys from time to time to assist. We have removed many bakkie loads of alienvegetation and try to educate people as coastaldunesare sensitive tohumanactivity.Holiday-makers are sometimes ignorant, but under-stand when we explain what we do and whatwe aim to achieve,” Zeele says.

THE wrangle between the Umdoni TestingCentreActionCommitteeand theUmdoniMu-nicipality is clearlynotgoing tosubsideorvan-ish. As reports in our pages show, after a lullduringthemourningperiodforNelsonMande-la and the festive season, hostilities have beenresumed at an even higher tempo.
Some peoplewill scoff at the significance ofthis but it should be borne in mind that Utecais a blend of business people from the drivingschools,taxis,tradesunionistsandpoliticalac-tivists.
While thebusinesscomponent isnotopenly
political, the trades unionists and activistsare.
More importantly, they are almost entirelydrawnfromthethreegroupsrulingthecountry— Cosatu, the SA Communist Party and theANC.
To the same extent that the booing of Presi-dentJacobZumacamefromasupposedlysup-portive sector, so does the challenge againstUmdoni Municipality.
Thatchallenge isbasedonallegedmisman-agementandcorruption, also strong issues forthe population.

Coming home to roost
Driving on what is left of roadDear Fever,
THIS is Raymond Avenue, Scottburgh South, probably not the worst, but one that is used by manycars as a thoroughfare up to the main road.
There is a crèche at the top of the road where theroad is just pothole after pothole, but difficult to pho
tograph because ofthe dappled effectfrom the overhangingtrees. What happened to our infrastructure?
In South Africa weused to drive on theleft side of the roadnow, we drive on whatis left of theroad.
Some of thesepotholes are deepenough, if you don’tsee them, to bucklewheels and break suspension.
As with the stateof the footpaths inthe town, if we injureourselves or damageour cars, maybe weshould stop complaining and sue thetown council.
It works in othercountries.

SMILE AWHILE
Funniest thing this yearDear Fever,
I SAWthe funniest thingon theMonday, justbeforethestartofschool,intheTotiCBD.Afam-ily had come out of a stationery store and thedriver, themother, got into the SUVand closedher door.
Her two little ones got into theback, but onecouldn’t close thedoor, pullingandpulling, but
unsuccessfully. So one of them got out andshoved it hard from the outside and there hewas left on the pavement.
Fortunately, the driver realised the errorandhopped out to put him inside and close thedoor.

Foods that ‘mess’ with your looks>> Processed foods not only strip your body of the good nutrients it needs to grow beautiful hair and have glowing skin
WHILE it’s nearly impossible to entirely cut outprocessed food, the following five are theones you must stay away from.
>> Fizzy drinksProcessed foods not only strip your body of the
good nutrients it needs to grow beautiful hair and haveglowing skin, but they eat into your daily caloric intake.Fizzy drinks (and anything with caffeine) cause dehydration, which will make your skin look dry and wrinkled. Plump up with water instead.>>Bad fats
You need the healthy fats such as olive oil and co
conut oil for beautiful skin and hair. Stay away fromthe bad fats —corn, soybean and palm oil.>> Highfructose corn syrup
Read those labels. Highfructose corn syrup is ineverything, and should be avoided at all costs. Thissubstance increases triglycerides, boosts fatstoring
hormones, and drives people to overeat and gainweight.>>Simple carbs
Sugar, white flour and white rice are simple carbsthat are stripped of vitamins and fibre. Eating toomany of these noncomplex carbs can cause insulinlevels to spike, which leads to inflammation, whichproduces enzymes that break down collagen andelastin, resulting in sagging skin and wrinkles. Sugaralso raises the blood sugar, which creates a spike ininsulin.>> Processed meat
While cold meat and hot dogs don’t contain sugar, they are loaded with preservatives — sodium andnitrates. Salt in processed foods can wreak havocon skin because it causes you to retain water, whichmeans swelling, as well as dehydration, whichmeans wrinkles. — dailymakeover.com

NGABE kungcono ukuba osopolitiki noma abaholi bezombusazwe bahlale bebangisana ngokwenza izintoezinhle, ngezinhloso ezinhle. Angingabazi nakancaneukuthi ukuba baba nalomdlandla wokwenza izintoezinhle ngesikhathi kuqala umbuso wentando yeningi ngo1994, izinga lentuthuko liphezulu kakhulu.
Ake ucabange nje ukuthi uma amaqembu ezepolitiki engamane akhele abantu izindlu ngaphandlekokulindela uHulumeni, ngabe bangaki abantu abangenazo izindlu.
Nanxa ingeke iphele imijondolo noma imikhukhungenxa yezizathu ezahlukene, ngikholwa wukuthi ngabe ababaningi ngalendlela ababaningi ngayo abantu abahlala emijondolo nasemikhukhwini. Inkingaisekuthini izinhloso zalaba abagcina ngokuklwebhana nokushawodana uma bakhela abantu izindlunjengoba sibonile kulezi zinsuku ezedlule, kusukekungesikhona ukwenza okuhle kubantu abahluphekayo, kodwa kungezinye izinhloso.
Imibuzo efika ngokushesha uma kucutshungulwaindaba kaMnuz Julius Malema, ngethi luqhamukaphilolu ‘thando’ olungaka lokuthi abone umndeni ohluphekayo odinga indlu eNkandla? Abekho yini abadinga izindlu ngakubo? Nakhona eNkandla yini edalekube ngumndeni oseduze komuzi kamengameliwezwe, uMnuz Jacob Gedleyihlekisa “J.Z.” Zuma?
Kukhona mhlambe ozophendula ngokuthi yilowonalowo unelungelo lokusiza lapho ethanda khona.Kulungile. Kodwa omunye umbuzo oqhamukayo uthingesikhathi esamemeza kuzwe izwe lonke ukuthiyena uzimisele ngokufela uMsholozi, yayingekho yiniimindeni edinga izindlu? Yini lolu ‘thando’ luvuthwesekusondele ukhetho?
KhonamanjalosesizwakubikwaukuthieSeshego, kwesikaMnuz Malema, sekukhona amalungu eANCafuna ukwakhela umndeni ohluphekayo indlu eduzekwesithabathaba somuzi owakhiwa nguMnuz Malema. Ngempela ngempela umlabalaba wani woke lo?
Noma kukuhle ukusiza abahluphekayo, akusikho
na nje ukuzibizela ulaka lukaNkulunkulu ukulwa ngabantu bakhe abahluphekayo? Zizoba khona nje izibusiso kulezi zenzo zabo noma kuzofana nokuthelaamanzi emhlane wedada? Sibuza lemibuzo njengoba yima sizobona izinhlobo ezahlukene zothandodadewethu kababa.
Uma sibheka uhlangothi lwesenzo esihle sikaMnuz Malema, kuyaxaka ukubona laba abamxakazisilengoba bethi akayitholanga imvume. Yini eyenzaabantu bayiqikelele kangaka indaba yokuthola imvume yokwenza into enhle. Asiyibuyisele eceleni kancane nje ipolitiki.
Bona nje babeyithole kupi imvume yokumvimbabamshaye.
Asikaze sizwe futhi ukuthi abantu bayaye baceleimvume uma befuna ukususa uthuthuva nomaukonela phansi impahla. Mhlambe laba abavimbeuMnuz Malema bebefuna ukuzakhela igama kuMengameli Zuma, kodwa ngeshwa labo, uMsholozi usihlabe wasihlikiza leso senzo sabo. Ukubeke kwacacauMsholozi ukuthi akukho muntu okufanele avinjweuma ekhankasa. Sengathi lokhu kungangena kugxileezingqondweni zomphakathi ngoba ngeke kwemukeleke nangengozi ukuthi kuphinde kube khonaisigameko esifuze esikaMnuz Malema.
Cishe kuthokozise wonke umuntu waseNingizimuAfrika ukuzwa ukuthi ingxenye yomhlahlandlela weANC, eyokuqinisekisa ukuthi izikhungo zemali, ikakhulukazi amabhange, ayazibuyekeza izindlela zokusiza abantu ngezimali zokusungula amabhizinisi.
UMsholozi uthe kunemibiko yokuthi abantu bayaemabhange bephethe amabusiness plan amahlekodwa bangalutholi usizo ngoba kufuneka izibambiso (collateral noma isecurity) ezinkulu.
Sivumelana ngokuphelele noMsholozi ngobakunenqwaba yabafundi ababhuquza emakhayabebe benemibono ephusile yamabhizinisi kodwa iphelele obala ngoba bengenazo lezi zibambiso ezidingeka emabhange. Kuyaye kube buhlungu uma sebekhala ngokuthi imalimboleko abayitholanga kodwababone imibono yamabhizinisi abo isisetshenziswakwezinye izindawo.

Burn blasts through Drak>> Toti star finishes on podium as Athlone Park ace Ward wins Under23 gold
FEVER REPORTER
MICHELLE Burn (Team Jeep)of Amanzimtoti clinchedthird place in the women’s
race at the 2014 N3TC Drak Chal-lenge in Underberg at the weekend.
The women’s title fell for a fourthtime toAbbyAdie (Best4Healthcare/Kayak Centre), who got engaged onthe weekend.
However, her romantic milestonedidn’t afford her any leeway fromteammate Robyn Kime, who closed
down more than half of Adie’s over-night lead on the final stage on Sun-day.“Istarted inelapsedtimeandRo-bynwasinthefirstbatch,whichmadeit verydifficult tokeep trackonwhereshe was relative to me,” said Adie.
Adie can now turn her full atten-

Andy Birkett snatched a sensa-tional maiden title as he exploited amistakebytriplechampionHankMc-Gregor in the closing stages of therace.RacingonalowUmzimkuluRiv-er, Birkett (EuroSteel) and McGregor(Kayak Centre/Team Jeep) startedthe 23km final stage from CallawayBridgetoHopewellFarmsidebyside, with McGregor having won the psy-chological advantage of winning thefirst stage.

“For the next two kilometres Ilooked back overmy shoulder at eve-ry corner and every rapid to see ifHankwaschasingme.OnlywhenIre-alised that he had given up the chasedid I start thinking about the fact thatI might win the title,” said Birkett.
“Iamreallystokedwiththewinbe-cause it helpsmeprove tomyself thatmy paddling is improving, and that I
can mix it up with Hank McGregorand the flatwater marathon pad-dlers,”saidBirkett,wholastyearwontheUnder-23WorldMarathonCham-pionships title in Copenhagen.
Birkett, whohasmadeUnderbergabase forhisDusi training campaignwith his partner Sbonelo Zondi, wasfrustrated that the race did not startat the traditional first stage start atCastleburn bridge, a decision takenbytheorganisersduetotheunusuallylow river conditions.
“Itwasadauntingtaskstartingthefinal stagealongsideHankMcGregor, and so it should be. He is South Afri-ca’s topcanoeist and I thinkhewill beforever, based on what he hadachieved,” said Birkett.
“It was a very tough race.Wewer-en’tgivingeachotheraneasytimeoutthere but that is what racing is allabout. So I am a little surprised butverychuffedwithmywinhere today,”said Birkett.
