One last reminder – next week is NAPLAN week. All students in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9 will take part in the tests on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We will be doing the tests first thing in the morning.
Don’t forget the NAPLAN Breakfast next Tuesday, Wednesd ay and Thursday for all students.
On Friday 18 May it is Walk Safely To School Day. Now in its 19th year, the community event seeks to promote road safety, health, public transport and environmental awareness. I encourage all families who are able to walk to school on the morning of 18 May. Families who live a distance away could even have parents park their cars up at the local library and walk down to school with the kids.
We will also participate in the 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge this year. Attached to this newsletter parents and students will find a double sided reading log, for those students who choose to participate. Reading starts on 14 May and the challenge finishes on 24 August. To complete the challenge P-4 students must read 20 books and year 5-9 students must read 15 books. The Premier’s Reading Challenge is all about reading for pleasure. The more involved parents and families are in the reading process with the children the more enjoyable it is. Talk about books with your child, enjoy a story together at bed-time, listen and ask questions about what your child is reading…. Enjoying reading together is a great opportunity to bond with one another.
Any students and families wishing to participate can get cracking next week, by filling in the record. It can be returned to the office on 24 August or soon after. If students fill the provided record form, more will be available at the office. Happy reading!!
Being close to the middle of the term now is a good opportunity to talk with your child about maintaining their good behaviour. We have had a negligible number of incidents this term which is absolutely fantastic. It would be wonderful to see this continue but that will not happen without the support of parents and families. Celebrate your child’s successes at school and help them articulate the meaning behind our 4 expectations Always Learning, Always Respectful, Always Resilient, Always Safe.
Lastly, the total school attendance percentage for this term is 92.8%. Considering the large amount of sickness we have had in our school I think this is quite acceptable –a reminder to families that illness usually is the only acceptable reason for time away from school. I have been working on organising some ‘Attendance Postcards’ which will be sent home at the end of each term for those students who have had excellent attendance (above 95% for the term).
I can’t believe it’s MAY already!

I need to inform families that we are introducing a ‘First Break Reflecon Time’ slip into our behaviour management systems at
Quinalow.
We already had Reflecon Time as a listed duty for First break. However this new system formalises the process for teachers and
students, ensuring a consistent response to MINOR behaviour problems where support from administraon is required.
Any parents with quesons about this are very welcome to see me.
From the classroom
Prep/Year 1 - Week 4 already and we have covered an amazing amount of work. In Maths, the students have been learning about analogue and digital time. They have been working on o’clock and half past times. Three o’clock in the afternoon is one of their favourite times! This week the preps are learning about 2D shapes and the year 1’s have been studying 3D shapes and their attributes.
Today the children read the book ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’ and then wrote a descriptive passage about their main character. The reading is progressing well in the classroom with the students really enjoying participating in reading activities. It’s also great to see so many homework books coming in on Friday. Remember to bring your homework and library books on Friday, please.
Year 2/3 - This term we are studying the classic children's story, "Charlotte's Web". It is a great text to use to study features of a narrative, procedure structures and written conversations. Our theme for this term is all about spiders! Argh! We have already brainstormed our prior knowledge and have learnt some very interesting facts, for example spiderlings eat each other when they are young! Maybe this is just as well as we really would be over run by spiders. Our English, Science, Design Technology and Arts KLA's are all focussing on spiders.
We have been practising writing narratives and persuasive texts in preparation for NAPLAN, as well as practising NAPLAN style reading questions.
Happy Mother's Day to all Mums this Sunday, we hope your children spoil you!!
This week on Tuesday we had our vising
Principal Project Officer for the
Curriculum, Pedagogy and Learning Team
on site working with students and
teachers to model 'bumping up' wring.
We took a piece of wring, idenfied
weak vocabulary choices and worked up
to improve the sentences and using more
precise vocabulary. Very worthwhile
sessions for our 2/3, 5/6 and secondary
students and teachers !
Our Easter celebraon last term. The hot cross buns were delicious.
Year 4 - We are already in week 4, where has the time gone? Almost half way through term 2, wow !!!!
English: Last week the students finished creating their humorous poems and they just begun to present the poems to the class. Students continue working in the word webs to extend vocabulary in class and in their homework. During reading groups we have been focusing on breaking up into syllables, multisyllabic words.
Maths: Students have been working on improper and equivalent fractions and locating them on a number line. We have discussed and identified specific vocabulary related to the different number facts word problems. Students have also identified the characteristics of the different 3D shapes.
Science: Students have read different books about living things and the life cycles. It has been a great opportunity to have a whole class, small groups and pair discussions.
Mother’s Day Celebration: We are very excited to host a small celebration to all the mothers in our class this coming Friday. Just bring along a smile and we will do the rest. Be ready for some performances, games, nibbles and much more. Looking forward to seeing you all on Friday.
REMINDER - Choir Practice next Monday 14 May
