February 26 – February 28, 2016

Camp Erin Tampa Bay is a weekend sleep away camp specifically designed for kids and teens, 1st-12th grade, who have experienced the death of a significant person in their life. At Camp Erin, kids have the opportunity to explore, express, and memorialize while being around other kids who have experienced similar losses in their lives.

Camper and Volunteer applications for Camp Erin Tampa Bay can be found at:

www.SuncoastKidsPlace.org/CampErin

Supplies:

• Clear ornaments (the type you can open)

• At least 6 colors of ribbon cut into 6in sections

• Thinly cut strips of paper

• Markers, pens, or colored pencils

• Assorted small objects that can be put into the ornament (beads, confetti, bells, etc.)

1) Talk with kids about all the different emotions they feel when they are thinking about their person that died and assign each emotion to a different color ribbon. Lay these out on the table with labels. Some common emotions with young kids may be sad, lonely, happy, scared, mad, love etc. For older kids there may be more emotions, like yearning, guilt, regret, hope, yearning, anger, etc.

2) Lay out your small objects, whatever they may be, and label them ‘memories’.

3) Lay out your strips of paper with markers, pens or colored pencils.

4) Give each child an ornament. Explain that they should fill the ornament with the different emotions they feel when they think about the person that died.

5) Explain next that the beads represent memories. Encourage kids to think about different memories they have of the person. For each memory have them drop a bead into the ornament. This is a great opportunity to share memories together, but if kids don’t want to share that is okay too.

6) Finally, allow kids to write/draw anything they would like on the strip of paper. This could be a message to the person who died, a memory, or whatever else they wish. When they are done, add the paper to the ornament and close it up. Tie a ribbon to the top and you are all done!
