OverviewFallFrolicWeekendisatimefortheAMCBostonRockClimbingcommunitytocometogetherwithotherAMCChapterclimbersforaweekendofclimbingattheShawangunkridgewhichisabout7mileswestofNewPaltz,NY.TheGunksisaworldclassclimbingareathathasfiguredprominentlyinthehistoryanddevelopmentofthesport.Itcontainshundredsofoutstandingandchallengingroutesatalllevels.
WewillbeclimbingSaturdayandSunday.TheleaderswillNOTbeprovidingandpartnermatchmaking.Ifyouneedapartnerpleaseusethecarpoolingspreadsheet.
• NewPaltz,NY,isabout4hoursfromBoston.MostpeopledrivedowntoNewPaltzonFriday,climbafulldayonSaturday,climbonSundayuntilmidorlateafternoon,andthenheadbacktoBoston.
• TheregistrationfeecoverscampingFridayandSaturdaynights(Sundaytoo,ifyouwish)andacatereddinnerat7:30pmonSaturdaynight.ItdoesnotcoveradmissiontotheMohonkPreserve($17/dayforclimbersunlessyoubuyanannualmembership)orMinnewaskaStatePark($10/day).
• TheregistrationdeadlineisSundayOctober16.Youmustregisteronourwebsiteandpaytheregistrationfeebythen.
• AfterdinneronSaturday,wewillholdourtraditionalrafflewithfabulousprizes,includingaclimbingrope!Ticketsare$1each,sobringsomecash!

3. Logistics
3.1. CarpoolingWewillbesettingupaGoogleDocsspreadsheetforFallFrolicweekendtohelpcoordinatecarpooling.Checkthewebsiteforthelink.
3.2. CampingPleaseseetheseparate“VenueInformation”document.
3.3. FoodFridaydinner–somepeoplewillprobablygettogetherfordinnerinNewPaltz.TheGildedOtterandBacchusarepopularchoices,thoughthereareplentyofrestaurantstochoosefrom.
Breakfasts–Youareresponsibleforyourownbreakfasts.Afewpeoplehavebeenknowntocookoratleastboilwateratthecampsiteforbreakfast,afewmaygointoNewPaltz,andsomemaycookbreakfastattheWestTrappsparkinglot.AnotherpopularbreakfastspotistheMountainHarborDeliatthejunctionofNY-299andNY-55/US-44whichisonthewaytotheMohonkPreserve.
Lunches–Youareresponsibleforyourownlunches.AttheMohonkPreserve,youwillneedtotakeyourlunchwithyou;don’tplanongoingbacktoyourcar.Somepeoplewilltakealunchbreakduringtheday(possiblywhilewaitinginlineforaclimb),whileothersmayhaveabiteonthegobetweenclimbs.Thereisgenerallynoproblemleavingfoodinyourpackatthebaseoftheclimb.
Saturdaydinner:doorsopenat6:30pm,dinnerstartsat7:30pm.Disposableplatesandsilverwarewillbeprovided.Seetheseparate“Venue”documentforadditionalinformation.
3.4. Climbing• NotethatcellphonereceptionisnotsogreatintheWestTrappsparkinglot.Onceyouhike
uptotheCarriageRoad,receptionisgood.
• It’sbesttocarpooltotheWestTrappslotsowedon’tfillitup!
• Youshouldn’thaveanyproblemparkingintheWestTrappslotat7:30am,butifyouarearrivinglaterandthatlotfillsup,youwillhavetoparkdownbytheVisitorCenter(preferablyintheupperlot).Fromthere,it’sasteep¼milehikeuptoreachtheCarriageRoad.
• ThereisnodrinkingwateravailableattheWestTrappslot,somakesureyoubringwhatyouneed!
• TherearetwovaulttoiletsattheWestTrappslot,aport-a-pottyonthetrailuptotheCarriageroad,andonevaulttoiletontheCarriageRoad.
• TheMohonkPreservechargesafeeof$17/dayforclimbers.IfyouarecommittedtogettingbacktotheGunks,anannualmembershipis$95forclimbers($85forstudents).Lastwechecked,youcanapplythevalueofonedaypasstowardsanannualmembershipwithin2weeksofyourdaypassdate,butasktheattendantfordetailsifyou'reinterested.
• Fromtheparkinglot,it’sa20-30minutehiketotheclimbs,withalittleuphillatthestartandend.
• ClimbsattheGunksaregenerally1-3pitches.Assumeroughly1hourperpitch,butsomepartiescanbefasterorslower.Thedescentcanbeawalkoff(sometimeswitha5.0downclimb)orarappel.
• Youshouldbringwaterandfoodwithyou.Don’tplanongoingbacktoyourcarduringtheday.
• Mostpeoplewillhikeinwithalltheirgearintheirpackandleavetheirpacksatthebaseoftheclimb.(Somepeoplemayinsteadgearupintheparkinglot.)
