Low-E Glass
Low-E is a high performance glass made with an invisible thin metallic coating that blocks heat flow. A proven energy saver, Low-
E glass reduces air conditioning costs by reducing solar transmissions in the summer. In winter, it reduces heat loss to the outside
and allows solar energy to pass inside. Low-E glass is available in grille between the glass, clear glass and blinds.
In warm weather, Low-E
glass reflects the sun’s
energy and prevents
it from entering the
home.
In cold weather, Low-E
glass reduces the amount
of heat lost by reflecting
it back inside.

DOORS
Follow all safety precautions as described on the product labels.RECOMMENDATIONS1. Do not sand the door2. Do not stain in direct sunlight3. Do not stain or topcoat while dew is present or within an hour before dusk.4. It is best to stain or paint when temperatures are between 50º and 90º F and humidity is below 85%.Step 1: Preparing the door surfaceDO NOT SAND THE DOOR. Sanding may damage the door surface. Wipe all door surfaces clean with a cloth dampened with mineral spirits and allow to dry. Surface must be free of dirt, grease and wax.Step 2: Stain Application1. Stir thoroughly before and during application.2. Apply using a lint free cloth in a circular motion (like you apply shoe polish), working the stain into the embossed grain pattern following the dia-gram below (start with the inside panels (1), applying stain carefully where vertical and horizontal boards meet).3. Use your stain cloth to smooth the stain in the direc-tion of the simulated grain. Use a dry soft-bristle brush to feather out lap marks. The longer the stain is left to set up before brushing, the darker the color will become. For a light shade, wait a few minutes and brush gently with long sweeping motions in the direction of the grain. Brush out each section completely, before moving onto the next section.4. Use the same method to do the interior stiles (2), rails (3), and complete vertical stiles (4).5. Stain the door edges.Step 3: Polyurethane Application - Door must be completely dry before ap-plying top coat. After door has dried 48 hours, test the sample skin for dry-ness. DO NOT SAND UNCOATED STAINED SURFACE. Stir thoroughly before and after application. DO NOT SHAKE. Apply only when air temperature is between 60º F and 90º F and the relative humidity is less than 50%. Use a foam brush or synthetic fiber brush. Do not use a roller. Flow polyurethane on in the direction of the simulated grain (following the same pattern as shown below). Do not over brush or trap air bubbles in the finish. Allow 4 hours drying time between coats. APPLY AT LEAST 2 (TWO) COATS ON ALL SIDES FOR EXTERIOR FIBERGLASS DOORS. Additional coats will increase protection from the elements.

Step 1. Materials Needed: Lint-free cloth •Mineral spirits • Rubber gloves • Masking tape • 4” bristle brush • For acrylic based application: Acrylic based primer/acrylic • For oil-based application: Alkyd-based primer/oil based exterior grade paint.Step 2. Surface Preparation: DO NOT SAND DOOR 1) Lay door horizontally on saw horses or table. 2) Remove all hardware and mask off anything you don’t want painted, such as the glass insert. 3) Wipe door with mineral spirits to clean any dust or residue from the surface. Allow all mineral spirits to dry from the surface before applying paint. 4) Prime the door by applying primer with a 4" brush in the direction of wood grain. Follow the manufacturer’s manuals of drying time. 5) The primer must be completely dry before applying any finish topcoat. 6) All edges must be painted.Step 3. Painting: 1) Apply exterior grade paint with 4” brush in the direc-tion of the grain. 2) All door panels, stiles, and rails need to be painted. If applying a second coat, follow manufacturer’s direction for drying time between coats.
PAINTING GUIDE FOR FIBERGLASS
Steel door panels and wood frames MUST be finished or painted after installation. Paint AS SOON AS POSSIBLE after installation. Select the proper Paint - A high quality, solvent-based or acrylic-based latex paint is recommended. Use a flat or satin finish for best results.Step 1. Fill installation nail holes with caulk or wood filler. Repair any dents or scratches. Sand the filled and repaired surfaces smooth.Step 2. Caulk between brickmould and exterior siding (if necessary). Also, run a small bead of caulk between brickmould and frame jamb. Apply paint following paint manufacturer’s recommendations (two coats mini-mum). Do not paint weatherstripping or bottom sweep - they must remain soft and flexible. *All edges must be painted.
1. Center the unit in the rough opening with the sill sitting in a bed of caulk. Plumb the hinge side and temporarily hold the unit in place using wood spacers (wedges). Be sure unit is level, square, and plum (starting at the sill) before installing the jamb-jacks.2. Temporarily secure the unit by slightly starting (screwing-in) top jamb-jacks on each side of the unit. Do this by turning jamb-jack screw clock-wise using TORX screwdriver one turn or less! Do not screw the jamb-jack screw all of the way in at this point.3. With the door unit temporarily held in place, check to see that the door operates smoothly. Use wood shims where needed to even up margins and to hold unit in position for permanent install. Pay careful attention when shimming to be sure that shims fill up the void behind jamb to create a solid surface. Check lockset holes to see that they are aligned Properly.4. Once you have the door unit level, square, and plumb, you can perma-nently secure the unit using jamb-jacks by turning top jamb-jack screw clockwise (using TORX screwdriver) until screw snaps into place (it must snap twice). Note: Once jamb-jack is “snapped-in-place” no further adjustments can be made... be sure you have shimmed properly and unit is level, square, and plumb. Repeat this procedure with bottom jamb-jacks making sure that jambs are not pulled as screws are tightened.5. Once you have door unit permanently in place, apply jamb-jack screw cover at each location.6. Caulk along the top and sides of the door unit where the exterior trim rests against the house making sure there is a tight seal to prevent water from leaking into the wall cavity between the door unit and the rough opening.
VINYL CLAD DOOR FRAME INSTALLATION
1. Center unit in the rough opening with the sill sitting in a bed of caulk. Plumb the hinge side and temporarily tack the hinge side brickmould to hold the unit in place.2. Install wood shims between the door jamb and stud at each hinge. Plumb the unit and nail through the jamb and shim into the stud using a #16 galvanized finish nail.3. Adjust the lock side to ensure even margins. Place shims at positions to approximate hinge side locations, check for plumb and square and nail securely.4. Complete the nailing of brickmould.5. Install (2) long wood screws in the top hinge, anchoring into the stud. *Please note that units installed by nailing only through the brickmould are installed improperly and will result in operating problems.

The protection of your door is a major factor in its maintenance requirements and longevity. To adequately protect your door and extend its life, several factors must be considered. Door type, climate, exposure, color choice and use of a storm door all have an ef-fect on the durability of a door.
Every door type weathers differently. Wood doors, for example, are more susceptible to the elements than steel or fiberglass. Here are some guidelines to consider when selecting the type of door to install, the choice of finish, and how much overhang protection is needed.
APPROPRIATE PROTECTION FOR EXTERIOR DOORS
Depending on the climate and the direction the door faces, wood doors will require some sort of protective overhang. A formula to help determine the correct overhang for a wood door in most cases is: Y = 1/2X. For example, if the measurement from the base of the door to the bottom of the overhang is 10 feet, then the overhang should extend at least 5 feet. In most climates, an overhang as shown in the illustration is required for wood doors, and suggested for all exterior doors. Keep in mind that overhangs are always wise, even for steel and fiberglass doors.
OVERHANGS
Also consider the variables specific to your region. The climate and the direc-tion a door faces play a key role in determining a proper overhang. Typi-cally, southern and western exposures are harshest. With southern exposures, the sun beats down on the door from sunrise to sun-set. In western exposures, the door receives sunlight in the hottest part of the day. Please consult the chart below and adjust the length of the overhang as needed.
Without correct overhangs, doors with a southern, south-western, southeastern or western exposure will require more frequent maintenance. Doors without appropiate protection may also experience performance problems such as rapid finish deterioration, color fading, wood splitting, warping, mould-ing shrinkage, wood joint separation, and water penetration between the mouldings, panels and glass.
No matter what type of exterior door you install, color choice may affect how quickly the exterior of the door weathers in ex-treme climates. In general, darker colors absorb more heat than lighter colors. The exterior face of a door exposed to the sun in harsh environments can reach temperatures well in excess of 120 degrees. As a rule of thumb, if you can’t hold your hand on the face of the door for more than 30 seconds, the door is too hot. These extreme temperatures can cause noticeable damage to the door including finish deterioration and accelerated color fading. In addition, extreme temperature changes can cause warp-ing, sticking and other performance problems. For doors with little protection or doors installed in hot environments, light colors may help reflect the heat and slow down heat build-up. Depending on the exposure and environment, other precautions (such as overhangs) should be taken to protect the door from the effects of the sun.
COLOR CHOICE
Storm doors provide additional protection for exterior doors in many climates. They shelter the door mainly from rain and wind, though a storm door with dual-pane Low-E glass will also block UV rays. In hot climates, add-ing a storm door may not be a good choice. Heat builds up between the doors and can cause substantial damage like warping, color fading and wood joint separation on the door. A storm door in front of a dark colored exterior door can accelerate heat build up even more.

Direction the door faces
With proper overhangs, doors may face any direction (north, south, east or west). Doors installed in these types of applica-tions still require finish maintenance. Wood doors, for instance, may need to be refinished every two to five years.
