BookClubNewsandReviewsJune2020DCPBKBookClubMeeting:OnJune29,twelvemembersoftheBookClubmetonZoomtodiscusstheincrediblytimelyselectionChocolateCity:AHistoryofRaceandDemocracy in theNation's Capital,byChrisMyersAsch andDerekMusgrove. Though our selections for the Spring and Fall Series arefinalizedmonths inadvance, thisbookcouldnothavecome intoourlives at a more fittingtime.We opened the discussion reflecting onwhichchaptersbestcontextualizedthecurrentnationalconversationonequalityandinstitutionalracism.Startinginthecolonialera,AschandMusgrovepaintacompellingportraitofacityatoncefoundedininequality,andvauntedasaleaderinprogressivepolicyreforms.ReadersfromDCgleansomuchcontextforthestreetstheywalkeveryday,tracingtheimpactofrealestatemarkets,urbanplanning,educationpolicy, political competition, and the overarching struggle for true Congressional representation as itevolvesover timewithineachneighborhood.While this isastoryof theDMV,and itsspotlightas thenation's capital, it is simultaneously the story of somany U.S. citieswhere racial and socioeconomicdisparitiesarestarklyvisibleandfiercelycontested.Thebookisatourdeforce;itsuseofprimaryandsecondary sources seamlessly elevates thenarrative in a way few of our nonfiction selections havematched.Highly,highlyrecommendedbythegrouptoallDCPBKAssociationmembers!July2020DCPBKBookClubMeeting:ThegroupmetthefollowingmonthonJuly29onZoomtodiscussthefiction selectionChildren of Blood and Bone, by Nigerian-Americanauthor Tomi Adeyemi. The group has read quite a few Young Adultselectionsover the years, andweenjoydiscussing the level atwhichthemesarecommunicated,andwhetherwethinkthey'reappropriateorcommunicatedwelltotheaudience.Thisparticularbookisentertaining-it is sweeping in its use of magic, camaraderie and travels, and itsuccessfully conveys the author's intentional parallels to modern racism and systemic oppression.Members felt, knowing thiswas theauthor's firstnovel, that thedialogueandwriting leave room formaturation in the subsequent books expected in the series, and that perhaps toomany locations andcharacterswereleveragedtoeffectivelypacethenarrative.Mid-August2020BonusDCPBKBookClubMeeting:OnAugust13,theBookClubmetforabonusZoomdiscussionofTheCityWeBecamebyN.K. Jemisin.Aboutfourtimesayear,thegroupmeetstwiceinamonth,discussingselectionsthatwerepopularchoicesduringourvotingcyclebutdidn'tquitemakethecutforourregular,endofmonthdiscussions.N.K.Jemisinisacelebratedsciencefictionauthor,andmuchbelovedbymanyinDCPBKBookClub,sowewerehappytodiveintoherlatestnovel.Inthisstory,eachboroughofNYChasahumanavatar,whoembodiesthespiritandcharacteroftheplace,andtheymustbandtogethertofendofinter-dimensionalvillains.Itisanincrediblynovelconcept,anditspeakstotheglobalfascinationwithNYCthateventhosewhodon't livetherecanstilleasilyvisualizeJemisin'sdepictionofthecity'speople,values,andgeography.Jemisindoesclearlyhavepoliticalargumentsembedded-close-minded,fearful, xenophoic Staten Island in particular is not portrayed favorably, juxtaposed to her vibrant,welcoming, talented fellow boroughs, and members may take issue with various characterizations.Sciencefictionisalwayswelcomeinourgroup-wehaveonemoreselectioncomingupthisFallbyanothercelebratedfemalesciencefictionauthor,UrsulaKLeGuin.

TheDCMentorshipNetworkwillofferasix-monthstructuredmentoringprogramwithopportunitiesforpeermentoringandyoungprofessional-to-experiencedprofessionalrelationships.Participantsreceiveresourcessuchasahandbook,mentorshipagreementtemplate,regularnewsletters,andtheopportunitytomeetothersintheprogramataspecialMentorMixevent.
