Code Characteristics
ExplosiveAn explosive substance or waste is a solid or liquidsubstance or waste (or mixture of substances orwastes) which is in itself capable by chemical reactionof producing gas at such a temperature and pressureand at such a speed as to cause damage to
the surroundings.Flammable liquidsThe word “flammable” has the same meaning as“inflammable”. Flammable liquids are liquids, ormixtures of liquids, or liquids containing solids insolution or suspension (for example, paints, varnishes, lacquers, etc., but not including substances or wastesotherwise classified on account of their dangerouscharacteristics) which give off a flammable vapour attemperatures of not more than 60.5ºC, closed-cup test,or not more than 65.6ºC, open-cup test. (Since theresults of open-cup tests and of closed-cup tests are notstrictly comparable and even individual results by thesame test are often variable, regulations varying fromthe above figures to make allowance for suchdifferences would be within the spirit of this definition.)
Flammable SolidsSolids, or waste solids, other than those classed asexplosives, which under conditions encountered intransport are readily combustible, or may cause orcontribute to fire through friction.
Substances or wastes liable to spontaneous combustion
Substances or wastes which are liable to spontaneousheating under normal conditions encountered intransport, or to heating up on contact with air, and beingthen liable to catch fire.
Substances or wastes which, in contact with water emitflammable gasesSubstances or wastes which, by interaction with water, are liable to become spontaneously flammable or togive off flammable gases in dangerous quantities.

Substances or wastes which, while in themselves notnecessarily combustible, may, generally by yieldingoxygen cause, or contribute to, the combustion of othermaterials.
Organic PeroxidesOrganic substances or wastes which contain thebivalent-o-o-structure are thermally unstable substanceswhich may undergo exothermic self-acceleratingdecomposition
Poisonous (Acute)Substances or wastes liable either to cause death orserious injury or to harm human health if swallowed orinhaled or by skin contact
Infectious substancesSubstances or wastes containing viable microorganisms or their toxins which are known or suspectedto cause disease in animals or humans
CorrosivesSubstances or wastes which, by chemical action, willcause severe damage when in contact with living tissue,or, in the case of leakage, will materially damage, oreven destroy, other goods or the means of transport;they may also cause other hazards
Liberation of toxic gases in contact with air or water
Substances or wastes which, by interaction with air orwater, are liable to give off toxic gases in dangerousquantities
Toxic (Delayed or chronic)Substances or wastes which, if they are inhaled oringested or if they penetrate the skin, may involvedelayed or chronic effects, including carcinogenicity
EcotoxicSubstances or wastes which if released present or maypresent immediate or delayed adverse impacts to theenvironment by means of bioaccumulation and/or toxiceffects upon biotic systems

TestsThe potential hazards posed by certain types of wastes are not yet fully documented;tests to define quantitatively these hazards do not exist. Further research isnecessary in order to develop means to characerise potential hazards posed to manand/or the environment by these wastes. Standardized tests have been derived withrespect to pure substances and materials. Many countries have developed nationaltests which can apply to mterials listed in Annex I, in order to decide if thesematerials exhibit any of the characteristics listed in this Annex.
