Creating Portal Pages

As with communities, pages must be based on a template. Two page templates have been created for you and are preset to the standard layout options with the mandatory Bread Crumb portlet already placed on the page.

Note: If you are designing pages that may be easily viewed on screen resolutions starting at 800x600, you will want most of your pages to be only 2 columns wide. With a 3-column page, the middle column is only 335 pixels wide when viewed at 800x600, so the amount of content and/or size of images that can be placed in the middle column is limited.

Delete yourself from the Security Settings list. As the creator of the page, you already have Admin rights.

Note that the ACL has exactly the same settings as it did when you created the community. This is because any new object you create inherits the ACL of the containing object (plus, the creator is added as an Admin). The containing object for a page is the community. Had you added any groups to the community when it was created, those groups would automatically be added on the page, with the same privilege settings.

Left Navigation and Page Names

Hiding Pages can be useful when you do now want the page to show in the Left Navigation. For example, the Home page is the default landing Page on your Community and you really don’t need the left navigation to show a link to it; selecting the Community name will take you to the Home page.

Some other examples would be to use a Hidden Page that contains the "Intrinsic Search Results" portlet that will be used to display the results of the search. You would also use a Hidden Page with the Redirect Portlet.

All left navigation portlets in the portal have been built to HIDE pages where the name starts with either “Home” or “Hide”. Thus, the following page names would not be displayed in the left navigation:HomeHide – New PageHide – News Archives  The page names below WILL show up in the left navigation:Home PageHome BuyersNew HomeHidden Page
