Bulgarians honor the 24th of May as the Day of the Slavic Alphabet and Culture. All over the
country schools are decorated with flowers and portraits of the brothers St.Cyril and
St.Methodius. They are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet, the first alphabet used
to transcribe the Old Church Slavonic language. The alphabet has official status with
many organizations. With the accession of Bulgaria to the European Union on January 1,
2007 , Cyrillic became the third official alphabet of the EU. Up to 2007 there are more than 12 million people around the world who
speak Bulgarian fluently.
