Edith Dircksey Cowan was born on the 2nd of August 1861 in Geraldon and died on the 9th of January 1932.In between that
she was the first women in Western in Australia to have a seat in parliament. She married at the age of eighteen to a man named
James Cowan they had five kids four daughters and one son.

Australia thought not enough was being done for the rights for women and children in the 1900‘s.Women won the right to vote in 1899 but were not allowed to
stand for parliament until 1926.Edith Cowan campaigned for both cases. Edith Cowan was the first
women to go into parliament in 1921-1924.

and one in Mount Lawley

Edith was fifty nine years of age when she was elected into parliament. Edith fought for the rights of women. When Edith died, James Cowan was quoted as saying, “to have lived with her those years was a honour.” Edith maintained her committee and
social work until her final illness.
