Definitions To Know:
• Stress – your body’s response to change around you. Positive or Negative
• Distress – Stress that results in a negative reaction. May cause feelings of anger, disappointment, or frustration.
• Stressor - Anything that causes stress.• Adrenaline – A hormone released by the body in
response to stress. Rapid breathing or heartbeat• Fatigue – Extreme tiredness of the body or mind.
Two Types of STRESS:
• Positive• Stay Focused• Feel Alert• Excited• Challenged• Playing on a sports team• Avoiding an accident• Accomplishment
• Negative – (distress)• Frustrated• Feel angry• Disappointed• Helpless• Confused• Arguing with a friend• Getting sick or hurt• Doing poorly in school
Two types of FATIGUE:
• Physical• Occurs after vigorous
activity such as running a race or raking the yard.
• Muscles feel overworked and sore.
• Solution: REST
• Emotional• Results from to much
negative stress. • Worry• Sadness• Solution: remove the
source of stress or learn how to manage it.
Five ways to Manage or Reduce Stress:• Plan Ahead
• Set aside some time to accomplish what you need to do. This way you won’t rush last minute.
• Set your Priorities• Realize you can’t do everything. Too many activities can cause stress
• Redirect your energy• Whenever you feel angry or excited, you have extra energy, use it to
accomplish something positive.• Talk to Someone
• Telling someone else how you feel can relieve pressure• Relax
• Take time to yourself. Laugh with friends or take a quiet walk.
