The issue of materials flow is of vital importance within today’s fast-pacedbusiness environment. The areas of production and sales are faced with com-plex procurement and distribution net-works, highly diversified product rangesand customer requirements that call fortailor-made solutions. Indeed, against thebackdrop of shorter innovation cycles, increasingly complex manufacturingprocesses and new channels of distribu-tion, materials flow has become a criticalsuccess factor. Globalisation has broughtabout substantial changes when it comesto the handling and delivery of goods –with far-reaching consequences for com-panies’ logistical processes. “Internet fulfilment” has forced companies to em-brace the values of customer-orientatedflexibility and greater efficiency. The products of the Interroll Group play a pivotal role in helping companies meetthe new challenges of materials handling. Our main focus within the Drives and
Rollers unit is on the individual partswhich make up an overall product offer-ing that is more than convincing. Indeed, components are our core competence. As an integral part of Interroll’s cutting-edge solutions, our conveyor rollers con-tribute to the overall efficiency and qualityof materials handling – in all industries, throughout the world. Conveyor rollers,multi-directional Omniwheels and balltransfers – Interroll Drives and Rollersstands for poetry in motion. Our systemsmove, convey, accumulate, feed and turn– day in, day out; whether motorised or in the form of gravity rollers, accumulatingconveyor systems or tapered rollers. The Key to Efficient Materials Handling

This catalogue contains an overview ofconveyor components that provide theoptimum solution for virtually all materialshandling and storage problems.
To select the conveyor component tomatch the particular application, the following questions have to be answeredbeforehand:• How long, wide and high are the
materials to be conveyed?• How much do the items weigh?• What are the characteristics of the
items?• What is the base surface of the items
like?• Are there any special ambient condi-
tions that have to be taken into account(e.g. wetness, extreme temperatures, chemical influences)?
• Does the conveyor system, and hencethe conveyor surface, have to be antistatic?
• Will the conveyor system be driven or are the items going to run on gravityconveyors?
To ensure that items are conveyedsmoothly on roller conveyors, they mustbe supported by at least three rollers atall times. The length of the rollers (rollerlength = “RL”) is normally equal to “itemwidth + 50 mm”. The weight of the itemsbeing conveyed must be distributed overa sufficient number of load rollers so thatthe permissible load capacity of the indi-vidual rollers is not exceeded.
In specific cases, this may mean theitems have to be supported by more thanthree rollers. The condition of the basesurface of the items is also important.Cardboard boxes, for example, adaptvery well to rollers, so the weight of theitems is distributed evenly. Compared toplastic totes, however, cardboard boxesare likely to have a higher starting resist-ance. For this reason, it is advisable toselect rollers with lower pitch.
When conveying pallets, it is only abouttwo thirds of the rollers under the itemsthat are normally bearing the load – dueto the specific properties of a pallet. Toensure reliable operation, even under unfavourable conditions, the bearings of most Interroll conveyor rollers are pro-tected against splashes of water. In dampareas, stainless steel ball bearings or specially sealed ball bearings should beselected.
Quiet running is achieved by using bearinghousings and seals made of polymer inconjunction with precision ball bearings. If electrostatic charges have to be pre-vented, there is a special design of rolleravailable. Where operating conditionsmay cause problems, please consult usfor advice.
General Technical Information

The load capacity of Interroll conveyorrollers depends on the load capacity ofthe components of the roller: the tube, the spindle and the bearings.
To determine the load capacity of rollers, the load capacities of the individual assemblies are compared and calculatedin combination. The load capacity of theweakest assembly determines the loadcapacity of the entire roller.
The permissible loads for each roller areshown in the tables for the appropriateseries of roller. Roller load capacity islargely influenced by roller length, loaddistribution and spindle attachment.
The Load Capacity of Interroll Conveyor Rollers

Standard types of tube
Steel tubeAs a tube material, steel has the greatestrigidity and resistance to deflection. If the tube has to be protected againstcorrosion, zinc plated steel tube – or evenbetter, stainless steel tube – should beused. Sprockets and flanges can bewelded onto the tube. There are also other types available: tubes with roundbelt grooves, tubes with an elastic PVCsleeve, rubberised tubes, surface-hard-ened tubes, etc.
Aluminium tubeCompared with steel tube, aluminiumtube is not quite as strong and has onlyabout one third of the flexural strength. An aluminium tube, however, weighs only 36 per cent of a comparable steeltube. Moreover, it is not susceptible to corrosion.
PVC-Copolymer tubeAssuming a comparable diameter, the load capacity of a steel tube is muchhigher than that of a PVC-Copolymertube.
On the other hand, PVC-Copolymer tubesoffer a series of substantial advantages:• sound insulation• high impact resistance• light weight• corrosion proof• easy to clean
Standard Assemblies for Rollers
5
Female threaded spindleThe roller is fitted with bolts in the profile. Therefore, the spindle is extremely strong. The roller spindles and profiles stabiliseeach other, so compared with fittingloosely the rollers can be subjected tohigher loads.
To strengthen the profiles, it may not benecessary to use cross-ties. Rollers canbe simply removed from or fitted in an existing profile at any time.
Different types of spindle are available on request.
Standard types of spindle
Spring-loaded spindleThe spring-loaded spindle is the simplesttype of spindle and is extremely easy andquick to fit and remove. The side profilesused should be connected to one anotherwith cross-ties of adequate strength. Caremust be taken to ensure that the distancebetween the two profiles has at least 1 mm play in relation to the installationlength (EL) of the fitted roller.
One must also check that there is ade-quate space available for fitting the rollerin the side profiles. Due account must be taken of the space requirements indicated in the illustration below and in the formula. An excess (d1) of approx.0.5 mm larger than the diameter of thespindle is sufficient in most cases:
S x (H + D/2)d1 ≥ + d(EL – 1)

Standard types of bearing
For many Interroll conveyor rollers thereare various bearings available.
Interroll bearing without ball retainerThis is a ball bearing developed by Interroll which has smoothly rolled racegrooves, is of very simple design and has a comparatively high load capacity.Compared with the precision ball bearing, the Interroll bearing is much less sensitiveto potential bearing distortion. Alongsidethe precision ball bearing, this is the standard bearing for Interroll conveyorrollers.
Interroll bearing with ball retainerThe Interroll bearing with ball retainer can be used whenever a bearing is required that has to start up very easily. This bearing generates less running noisethan the standard version, but it also has a lower load capacity than the stan-dard version.
Interroll bearing made of stainless steelThis bearing can be compared with theInterroll bearing featuring a ball retainer. However, it is made entirely of stainlesssteel. On account of the non-corrodingproperties, this version of the bearing has a lower load capacity.
DIN precision ball bearingThis type of bearing is the standard DIN deep groove ball bearing in series 60 and 62. Precision ball race, maximum load capacities and service life, plus low-noiseoperation are the outstanding advantagesof this type of bearing.
2Z precision ball bearing This type of bearing is identical to the precision ball bearing previously described. However, as an addition, it also has steelshields on both sides. These shields create a narrow sealinggap and make no contact. That consider-ably improves the sealing of the bearing, and it is certain that the grease remainsinside the bearing at high speeds.
2RS precision ball bearing This type of bearing is identical to the precision ball bearing previously described. However, it additionally has neopreneseals on both sides, practically sealingthe bearing hermetically. The characteris-tics of this state-of-the-art seal will, how-ever, affect the easy-running properties of the bearing to a certain extent.
7
Interroll manufactures conveyor rollersmade of tubes to DIN standard. The standard allows certain deviations in concentricity.
When specifying “concentricity (t) = 0.3 mm”, for example, the needle of a gauge must be within a range of 0.3 mm.
In the case of rollers with PVC-Copolymertubes, a certain length should not be ex-ceeded, or else the concentricity deviationswill be disproportionately higher.
The following tube lengths should not beexceeded for PVC-Copolymer tubes:• tube diameter 20 mm: 400 mm• tube diameter 30 mm: 500 mm• tube diameter 40 mm/50 mm: 600 mm• tube diameter 63 mm: 800 mm• tube diameter 90 mm: 1,000 mm
Concentricity
t
The diagrams that follow indicate whatapproximate values can be expected forthe maximum concentricity deviation ofan entire Interroll conveyor roller. The figures stated are based on meas-urements. Please bear in mind that forDIN tubes much higher concentricity tolerances are permitted in some cases,so the approximate figures listed in thediagrams may be exceeded in individualcases.

Different Types of Industrial Plastics
In addition, these approximate figures depend on the following parameters:• duration of thermal exposure• type of mechanical load (direction
of force, impacts, etc.)• air humidity, solar radiation (UV),
chemical influences• component geometry
On virtually all conveyor elements, Interroll uses parts made of industrialplastics.
These plastics have many advantagesover steel:• sound insulation• food grade• easy to clean• high impact resistance• corrosion proof• light weight• high-quality design
Properties and applications for the industrial plastics used most frequently
Polyamide• excellent mechanical properties• high resistance to wear• low friction• scarcely any material fatigue• good resistance to chemicals• applications: sprocket heads, seals
and bearing housings
Polypropylene• low specific weight• high resistance to heat• good resistance to chemicals• non-hygroscopic• applications: wheels, seals and bearing
housings
Polyvinyl chloride (rigid PVC)• scratch proof• impact resistance• good resistance to chemicals• applications: tubes for PVC rollers
Polyoxymethylene (POM)• excellent mechanical properties• high resistance to wear• low friction• high dimensional stability• scarcely any water absorption• used for parts with special precision
requirements• applications: toothed belt heads
and slide bearings

Tangential driveThe tangential drive (by chain) is charac-terised by a good level of efficiency andsimple design. The installation length of the roller isshorter than for a drive from roller to roller. A single chain drives all the rollersof the conveyor. The chain is pressed onto the appropriate sprocket by thechain guide profile made of specialUHMW polyethylene. The roller teethmeshing with the chain only transfer thedriving power necessary for the individualroller. The chain can be guided eitheralong the top or bottom of the rollers. The chain guide in relation to the rollerhas to be positioned accurately (to within0.5 mm). The motor station to be used is installedin such a way that the pulling side of thechain is as short as possible. The motorstation is usually also provided with a device for adjusting chain tension. Tension rollers, which have to bear notonly the load of the items being con-veyed but also the forces of chain trac-tion, may have to be checked especiallywith regard to their maximum roller load. The conveyor length to be driven by a drive unit is only restricted by the maximum breaking load of the chain and the weight of the payload.
With the tangential drive, roller spacing(roller pitch) can be selected as required.Compared with driving from roller to roller, rollers are easy to remove and fit.
Types of Drive
11
Roller-to-roller drive (chain)Here too, the design is simple, but thereare a few design limitations when usingthis type of drive. No chain guide is required, but the rollerpitch (distance from roller to roller) depends on the size of the chain, andclose tolerances must be maintained (see Tolerances table).
The maximum conveyor length that can be driven by one motor is restrictedby the maximum breaking load of thechain; the chain experiences maximumload at the motor station. The drive station should, therefore, always be positioned at the centre of the conveyor length in order to take fulladvantage of the permissible tractiveforces of the chain. When designing the drive station, caremust be taken to ensure that the sprock-ets have a 180° deflection if possible and the chain can be re-tensioned.
Interroll suggests the following tolerancesfor roller spacing t:
Chain P Tolerance Breakingpitch for t loadInch mm mm N
3/8 9.525 0 to –0.4 9,100
1/2 12.700 0 to –0.5 18,200
5/8 15.875 0 to –0.7 22,700
3/4 19.050 0 to –0.8 29,500
1 25.400 0 to –1.0 58,000
Toothed belt (timing belt)As an alternative to the roller-to-rollerchain drive it is also possible to use a toothed belt (i.e. a timing belt). Toothed belt drives run quietly, are main-tenance-free and can be used at highdrive speeds. As with the chain drive, roller pitch has to be within close limits. The tolerancefor roller pitch t is 0 to –0.3 mm using Interroll special toothed belts.

Features• Series 3500 conveyor rollers are based
on the Series 1700 universal conveyorroller
• At the non-drive end there are Series1700 roller housings. The drive end canbe supplied with drive elements eithermade of plastic (sprocket polyamide6.6, toothed belt head – POM) or steel
• Sprockets made of highly abrasion resistant and resilient polyamide featureextremely good sound absorption compared with steel sprockets
• Steel sprockets are precision turnedparts which are welded to the tube andhave an accurate mesh
• One should always bear in mind that at speeds above 0.5 m/s the noise ofchain drives tends to increase to an unacceptable level. For this reason werecommend the Interroll toothed beltconveyor roller for high speeds.
Load capacity• Up to 2,000 N
DimensionsTube• Highly impact-resistant special PVC-
Copolymer in stone grey (RAL 7030)with an outside diameter of ■50 or 63 mm

Features• Conveying and accumulating via a
friction clutch between drive elementand sliding bush (single friction). In thecase of conveyor rollers with double-friction, the friction clutches are at bothends of the roller
• The driving force of the roller is load-dependent and adjusts automatically
• Friction accumulating conveyor rollerswith single friction and Series 3500 conveyor rollers have the same dimen-sions. Therefore, they can easily becombined with one another and can be converted to the relevant type ofdrive at any time (friction/fixed drive)
• At the non-drive end there are Series1700 housings. The drive end can besupplied with drive elements eithermade of plastic (sprockets – polyamide6.6, toothed belt head – POM) or steel
• Sprockets manufactured from abrasionresistant polyamide, which gives excel-lent sound absorption characteristics, compared to steel
• Steel sprockets are precision turnedparts which have an accurate meshing
• The load capacity of the roller dependson the amount of accumulating in pro-portion to total operating time

Design Information System descriptionThe friction conveyor rollers are driven by a continuously running roller chain or toothed belt. The drive element is connected to thebody of the roller via a friction bush (slidebearing bush). The drive is therefore effected by the fric-tion inside the friction bush. The materialsof the two friction surfaces (polyamide/polyamide and polyamide/steel) and thelubricant used are crucial to operation of the roller. If the items being conveyed are stopped(accumulating mode), the roller body remains stationary, and only the drive element continues to rotate. Due to theresulting friction, appropriate back pres-sure is applied to the items, and it accu-mulates in proportion to the length of the pile-up. As soon as the conveyor section is released again, the rollers, andhence the items, start moving again.
Driving forceThe driving force produced by the frictionroller regulates itself in relation to theweight of the items. The driving force depends on manydifferent factors such as the conditionof the underside of the items, mois-ture, temperature, grease, proportionof accumulation in relation to total operating time, etc. Some of these factors have a con-siderable effect on the performanceand life of the roller. We will be glad to advise you on yourspecific application. We also recom-mend that you conduct a performancetest using genuine items. The driving forces indicated below aretherefore not binding and relate to a standard climate (65% relative humidityand a temperature of +20 °C). The figures indicated also relate to thesystem where the items are located centrally on the rollers. They change considerably if the centre of gravity of theload is off-centre, and they drop the further away the centre of gravity of theload is from the drive element. Flat, sturdy item undersides are ideal –each roller takes an equal share of the load.
Under the aforementioned conditions, the following figures for driving force at the roller can be assumed:• 4 to 6% of roller load driving force,
assuming a single friction clutch and a roller outside diameter of 50 mm
• 2 to 5% of roller load driving force, assuming a single friction clutch and a roller outside diameter of 60 mm
• 8 to 13% of roller load driving force, assuming a double friction clutch and a roller outside diameter of 50 or 60 mm
The permissible conveyor speed is 0.5 metres m/s.

Only tapered conveyor rollers can ensurethat the items are conveyed round curvesreliably. The different conveying speedsaround the circumference of the taperedtubes allow perfect handling. Side guidesare not absolutely necessary.Compared with straight sections, curvedsections require greater installationlengths (assuming item dimensions areidentical). For reliable handling, the actual clearwidth of the conveyor should be approx.50 mm larger than the calculated width.EL and RL should be selected accord-ingly.

Design Information The nominal dimension of the curve inside radius Ri is 800 mm for rollerlengths (RL) of 300, 400, 500 mm, etc.and 850 mm for roller lengths of 250,350, 450 mm etc. The curve inside radiusis measured from the inner edge of theinside supporting profile (i.e. from the beginning of installation length EL).
Minimum outside radius (Ra):
Ra = (Ri + W)2 + (L/2)2
Number of rollers in the curveWithin a 90° curve no more than 23 Series KX0 rollers may be used. Depend-ing on the length of the items being conveyed, Interroll recommends the (minimum) number of rollers suggested in the table. The pitch indicated, Ti, at the inside radius is such that an angle of exactly 90° results between the roller running surfaces facing the curve ends.

Design informationThe load capacity of the multi-directionalOmniwheels is utilised to the full if interacting Omniwheels have exactly the same level, and if the surfaces coming into contact with the Omniwheelsare smooth.
If operating conditions are not ideal, a corresponding number of extra Omni-wheels must be used so that there is always adequate contact between the items being conveyed and the load-bearing Omniwheels.
