Impact of slaughter Houses (Production and Waste
Disposal) On Urban Environment Of
The SudanPresented By:
Dr. Abu Bakr El Siddig AhmedEl Tohami (Associate Professor)
To identify and assess the impact of irrelevant location of slaughterhouses on the living environment of some residential areas of Omdurman Municipality- Khartoum State- Sudan
Paper Objective:
1) Questionnaire.
2)Photos for documentation.
3) Site observations.
Methodologies adopted:
A Slaughter house is “a facility where animals are killed for consumption as food products “.
Definition
1) Animals Transportation
2) Slaughtering
3) Dressing
4) Evisceration
Animal Slaughtering Operations :
Aesthetic and pollution related problems.
a) Land contamination : Mostly, land contamination is an
aesthetic issue rather than pollution.
Impact of Slaughter Houses Site Selection On Omdurman Urban Environment:
The main pollutants are blood , animal dung , and body part:-
They can introduce bacterial contamination
Increase in nitrate , phosphate and sulphates leading to health problems .
B) Water contamination: -
Improper waste handling causes unpleasant odour and negatively affecting the esthetic value of the environment.
C) Air Emissions and the aesthetic value of the environment:
1) Waste generated by slaughterhouses ( e.g. hides, blood, bones , dung , fat and body part which could be used in:
preparation of leather. chicken feed selling . Preparation of organic manure and
cosmetics. Bricks industry use hides .
D) Solid wastes Reuse:
A lorry transporting slaughtering wastes reused in
bricks industry
2) Although the waste has a commercial value, a
considerable amount of it is wasted, because of
Poor handling
Through the following sources: animals
the slaughtering activities
Vehicular movement to transport animals and meat to and from the slaughterhouse.
D) Noise Pollution :NUISANCE AND IRITATION OF THE RESIDENCE
Spoiling the meat Due to the absence of cold storage facilities posing a danger to the consumer’s health .
E) Health hygiene and safety :
1. Wind helps in spreading of unpleasant odour and flies in the neighboring settlements .
2. The vulnerability of neighbouring areas to flooding by rain water since most of the slaughterhouses waste disposal sites are located in elevated or higher areas.
F) Other Environmental Impacts of the location of slaughter Houses on Omdurman Municipality:
H) Slaughterhouses waste disposal sites and their impact on the neighboring residential areas :
1. solid and liquid wastes attracts scavengers such as large birds and homeless dogs
2. Wastes provide an ideal habitat for the breeding and multiplication of insects (flies).
3. no waste management units in the study area even inside these slaughterhouses resulted in health hazards for the neighboring residential areas e.g. respiratory diseases and nuisance ( nasty smell) .
4. No green shelter to reduce noise as well as air pollution
slaughterhouses neighboring the residential areas resulted in a lot of environmental and health impacts
Conclusion
A) Site location :Slaughterhouses should be located
outside populated areas downwind from the city far from river banks or any other water body.
B) Land contamination: Proper storage of wastes inside the
premises in an aerated area to minimize biodegradation and foul smell .
Mitigation Measures :
Presence of a liquid waste collection system to avoid any water discharges outside the premises .
D) Air emissions : Development of Proper aerated
storage areas to minimize Unpleasant smell .
Planting Trees around the slaughterhouses.
C) Water contamination :
Improving Waste handling to minimize losses.
Open Storing waste in sheds to avoid smell inside the facility .
Recycling waste . Sprinkling waste storage areas with
crushed lime .
Solid waste :
Planting trees around the slaughterhouses . Slaughterhouses walls should be at least
seven feet high ..
Noise:
Regular medical checkup of meat handlers . PPE for meat handlers e.g. head cover ,
gloves …. etc. Storing meat in hygiene conditions ,
preferably on hangers . Provision of all necessary facilities and
infrastructure.
Health hygiene and safety :
