THE FIELD OF STUDY
Where will the catalogue be situated andwhat function it will fulfill?
WHERE ? WHAT ?
The catalogue will be in the internet allowing access from anywhere. The use will be more concentrated in KMC, studios in the institute, hostels and other places in the institute. It will be used by members of the other collaberated libraries and institutes as well.
• A device to search for documents in the data base of KMC. - books, magazines, e-books, newspapers, audio video cd’s, cd roms, etc. ie, become a very friendly usable link between the wast collection of knowledge in the KMC and us.
• A platform to share e-books and a bank for the same.
• A platform to get updates on the activities in the institute
WHAT ALREADY EXISTS?
Replacing old catalogue which had a lot of disfunc-tionalities, even in getting opened, a new web based catalogue has been installed since last year which has made locating books in the KMC much easier and from anywhere. Even though satisfactory to an extend in just locating a document, the interface is not much user friendly.
• the hierarchy of information provided is not clear• if the search term doesn’t match exactly with en-
tries in the data base, no results will be shown up.• very less number of documents is shown under a
particular tag due to no facility for personal tag-ging.

General Rules
STUDY OF THE EXISTINGINTERFACE
STUDY OF THE EXISTINGINTERFACE
• Needs to be much simpler to avoid the clutter
• has to have clear hierarchy on the basis of the im-portance of information . Example- the call number and book title should be more emphasized as they are the main things one will look for.
• can use accordion menus to reduce clutter.
STUDY OF OTHER PARALLEL SERVICES.
the layout and function of some other parallel approach-es in the net were studied.
“Contemporary cultures are saturated with displays of communication, in the form of advertisements, information graphics, site specific visual identities and images related to entertainment or deco-ration. If a piece of graphic communica-tion is to be displayed in this arena, the designer needs to be aware of how it relates to competing messages, and how the problem of image saturation or in-formation overload might be resolved in order to communicate effectively”
