MLK

• MLK was a 26 year old black minister at the time of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

• He had a reputation as a powerful speaker who could motivate and inspire others.

• His success during the Montgomery Buy Boycott made him one of the nation’s most prominent civil rights leaders.

Background

• Born to a middle class family in Atlanta, Georgia in 1926.

• Father was a college educated Baptist preacher.• Attended Morehouse College at age 15.• He obtained his doctorate from Boston

University in 1955.• 1953- married Coretta Scott and had 2 sons and

2 daughters

SCLC

• Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC)- MLK and others created this organization to coordinate civil rights protests.

• King became the first president.
