Highspeed
crash inSW
NIKITA SYLVESTER
It was terrible. Going at such a speed
the driver took out a stop sign, flipped
and rolled...traffic lights here, please!
This was the desperate plea by Mary
Hartle, aneighbourhoodwatchvolunteeraf-
ter sheandher teamcameacrossanaccident
on the corner of Irene Avenue and Helder-
berg College Road in Somerset West on
Wednesday (1 May).
The accident occurred at about 19:00when
a Jeep Patriot, believed to have been travel-
ling at a high speed, crashed into the front
of a black BMW. According to eyewitnesses,
the vehicles were badly damaged and both
drivers sustained multiple injuries.
Vanessa Cunningham was one of the first
people on the scene after a distraught by-
stander had flagged her down. As I was
coming up Irene Avenue from the direction
of Parel Vallei, I saw the smashed BMW in
the middle of the intersection.
Shocked by the extent of the damage to
both cars, Cunningham spoke to various by-
standers who had witnessed the incident
and also rendered some assistance to trau-
matised eyewitnesses. One of them told her
that the Jeep had sped across the stop street
and crashed into the BMW.
He must have been going at such a speed
that it caused him to roll uphill for several
metres, before hitting a tree and coming to
a halt, said Cunningham.
She added that they had been worried the
BMW would explode as petrol was pouring
fromit. All I can say is that fortunatelyboth
the cars were good, sturdy cars.
Due to patient confidentiality, the para-
medics on the scene were unable to provide
information about the condition of the driv-
ers involved in the accident.
Upon hearing of the accident Rola Motors
confirmed that the Jeep was their vehicle,
but that ithadnotbeendrivenbyanyof their
staff members at the time. It was a courtesy
vehicle on loan to one of their clients. A
spokesperson confirmed that the Jeep has
been written off and that Rola Motors is in
no way responsible for what had happened.
Somerset West police could not provide
any details of the accident but confirmed
that an accident report had been recorded.

Die vrou het toe Dinsdag 9, Vrydag 12 en

Bus strikes effect on commuters is debilitating
JAMEY THOMAS
Helderberg residents, dependent on the
Golden Arrow Bus Services, are still
bearing the brunt of the nationwide bus
strike which has now entered its third
week.
Busdrivers affiliated to theSouthAfrican
Transport and Allied Workers Union
(Satawu) and the Transport and Omnibus
Workers Union (Towu) undertook strike ac-
tion on Friday 19 April. Employers offered
a 6,5% wage increase while unions initially
demanded an 18% wage increase.
However, last week it was reported that
unions had lowered their demand to a 13%
wage increase,while employers raised their
offer to 8%.
No agreement has yet been reached and
talks between the unions and employers at
the Commission for Reconciliation, Media-
tion and Arbitration have resumed.
Meanwhile, striking bus drivers were ex-
pected to march to parliament on Tuesday.
On the other hand, the City of Cape Town
remains hopeful that the ongoing national
transport strike will soon be resolved as
hundreds of thousands of commuters across
the country have been substantially incon-
venienced.
It is important forbuses tobecomeopera-
tional as soon as possible. We have noted a
substantial increase in traffic congestion on
roads, in someareas by asmuchas 30%.The
bus strike has impacted on our residents
ability to get to work safely and on time and
on our learners getting to school. This is
deeply regrettable, said councillor Brett
Herron, Mayco member for Transport,
Roads and Stormwater, in a statement re-
leased on Tuesday.
Since the start of the strike,GoldenArrow
Bus Services has kept its buses under lock
and key and continues with the suspension
of its services for the duration of the strike.
Earlier this week, the organisation
reached out to commuters and extended its
sincerest apologies to all who have been ad-
versely affected by the ongoing national bus
strike.
DistrictMail posted an update of the bus
strike on its Facebook-page and this was
what local commuters had to say:
Fleur Swemmer: I say that when the
strike ends, keep other modes of transport.
Someone should take advantage and offer
scooters at a lower repay price. Commuters
need more options.
Sonya Beyers: I agree!
Michelle Jacobs: The strike is debilitat-
ing. Stealing hours from my employer, not
being able to come to work and reaching
home later, robbing precious time from my
family. It is awful and I am very unhappy.
Not everyone can afford a car and public
transport is dangerous enough now that the
roads are congested with taxis speeding
even more to cram maximum passengers.
And trains are even more horrendously
crammed. It is basically a matter of prayer
every day to go to work and come back in
one piece. Pay the people the money they
want and give us a chance to earn our sala-
ries and keep our lives and health intact
Golden Arrow. You are destroying families!

Julies death in July 2012 appeared in our

He had beenworking for the company for just

How is it possible that the Spur
in Gordons Bay has been
robbed three times and they are
situated directly opposite the po-
lice station? Is it because the po-
lice cant get through the safety
gate at the entrance to the police
station? What a joke this is.

Dream, Inspire,Dance Sumsbest showever
It has just beenmyprivilege to see
Sums production of Dream, In-
spire, Dance and I feel the need to
let everyone know about the kind
of talent available in Somerset
West, but where to start?
Every aspect of the production
is so inspiring that it can only be
treated by breaking it down to in-
dividual component parts.
The stage sets the atmosphere
by appearing simple and straight-
forward, but dont be fooled. Its
not easy to make something that
looks simple, work properly. The
set design and construction team
are to be congratulated.
The lighting plot was spot on
(pardon the pun). The mood of
each scene was enhanced by the
lightingeffects. Strobe lightswere
used, but never interfered with
my sensitive eyes, blackouts etc
were perfectly timed, the lights
neverwent off or cameon too soon
or too late.
The sound levels were correct
throughout theperformance, loud
(butnotdeafening)whenrequired
and gentle when needed. The
choice of music contained many
of my personal favourites.
Backstage crew. What back-
stage crew? I knew there must
have been someone there but
scene shiftswerenever obtrusive,
they were so slick that there was
never a delay between numbers.
Costumes. fantastic, colourful
and suited to the dances. At a
rough guess theremust have been
over 400 outfits for dancers of all
ages, yet all the costumes fitted
perfectly.
The dancers. Of course without
them there wouldnt have been a
show. But it was a joy to watch all
of them so obviously enjoying
themselves. Yes, I had my favour-
ites, some of them are obviously
stars in themaking, but I consider
it would be wrong of me to pick
out any single person (or group of
people) because they are all so
good.
Sumhasalwayshadaveryspe-
cial place in my heart. After each
of her productions say, There is
no way she can improve on that.
But she always proves me wrong.
Whatsherspecialmagic? Iwish
I knew, but it certainly involves
the discipline she instills in her
dancers, the hard working team
she surrounds herself with and in
the theme of the show in other
words the way she dreams of a
show, the way she inspires every-
one and her knowledge of dance.
Well done Sum. I am sure this
will be your best show ever. You
cant improve on this. Now its up
to you to prove me wrong next
time.
If any one reads this while the
show is still running DONT
MISS IT!

StrandBeachCleanup:whatagreat success!
We saw the notice of the Strand
Beach Cleanup for 4May adver-
tised in theDistrictDiary, somy
daughter Skye and I went down
to the beach to volunteer.
What really impressed me
was that all the volunteers did
the clean up so cheerfully. The
people walking /running along
the beach, saw all of uswith our
yellow bags (which were sup-
plied)andsomanyjustautomat-
ically picked up any debris they
saw and handed it to us.
One little boy came running
tome, fromquiteadistance, just
to put his cold drink bottle into
the bag.
If thereweremorebinsonour
beaches, these types of projects
would not be necessary.
Its a beautiful beach and I
think the people using the
beaches would definitely make
use of readily available bins.

Showyour love this
MothersDay
Instead of joining the hordes of peo-
ple buying cheesy gifts and cards for
Mothers Day, why not rather do
something really meaningful and
heartfelt?
If you think of everything that
your mother did for you, all the sac-
rifices she made and all the knowl-
edge she empowered you with, is it
not time that you give something
back?
A handmade card, crafted with
love and passion with some mean-
ingful words together with flowers
picked from your garden are just so
much better than a random gift and
a bought card.
Another idea is to cookyourmoth-
er her favourite meal (with help
fromdadandclean thekitchenafter-
wards), then get the family together
for a big celebration.
Alsogivemomadayoffhousehold
chores like washing dishes, clothes,
sweeping etc.
Remember, Mothers Day comes
around once a year, so show your
mother just howmuch you love her,
care for her and how much she
means to you.
Enjoy the day together as a family
and promise to treat her more often
and not just on Mothers Day.
Voteofno confidence
I recently needed various repairs done
around the house, so I scanned the Dis-

it may be that even in the present slow
economic climate theremust be opportu-

compete successfully. Subsequent to
this, I called an aluminium gutter expert

Cycling for life2013: raises
R300000 forHospice
What makes 40 teams of 304
cyclists ride non-stop for 12
hours?Whatteststheirendur-
ance and keeps them in the
saddle, hour after relentless
hour?
These were probably some of
the questions the cyclists were
asking themselves during the
fourth annual Cycling for Life
Challenge.
The answer, of course, was to
raise funds for Helderberg Hos-
pice.
The event took place on Satur-
day 4May at the DeHoop Prima-
ry School Activity Centre in
Somerset West.
It was a ride with a difference,
as it took place indoors, on sta-
tionary bikes placed on trainers,
with computerised speedome-
ters.
The pace set from the very
start of the day proved that this
event is justasdemandingasany
major cycle race. The huge in-
crease in participation shows
that serious cyclists are keen to
be part of this challenge, said
Patricia McNaught Davis, Hel-
derberg Hospices events, media
and marketing coordinator.
Teams sponsored cyclists rid-
ing an epic 22 139 km from
06:00 to 18:00, and raised
R300 000 in the process.
A team that stood out in this
years challenge, was the Ex-
tremeTeam fromSomersetWest
Round Table, who collected al-
most R60 000 between them.
Andrew Dietrich undertook a
24-hour solo ride and was kept
company by Herman Koegelen-
berg and Andre Moreby, who
each pounded the pedals for a so-
lo 12-hour ride. Thehighlight of
the event was a visit from the
premier of the Western Cape,
HelenZille,whorodethelasthalf
hour of the day with the hard-
working cyclists. Helderberg
Hospice salutes all those who
worked so hard for this event,
both on and off the saddle, and
whose commitment to Hospice
helps ensure that all in our com-
munitycanbenefit fromthisspe-
cial service of care, said Mc-
Naught Davis.

Helpinghands forGrade1 teachers
It is vital for pupils to get proper academic
support from an early age, otherwise it ham-
pers their development.
According to RolandMacDonald, principal
of Sir Lowrys Pass Primary School, most of
the Grade 1s at the school didnt have the op-
portunity to attend pre-school and therefore
donothavebasicskills likecuttingwithapair

With these extra hands, teachers will be
able to spend more valuable time on teach-
ing, says MacDonald.
Not only will pupils receivemore individu-
al attention, but jobs have also been created
for two women of Sir Lowrys Pass.

At this school more than 40 pupils are ac-

"USINESS
Retirement income: part 2
of2,9%,most investorshaveinsufficientcapital topro-
vide for their incomeneeds. Textbook investment the-
ory advises against holding all your wealth in one as-
set class, particularly shares, as they can
be extremely volatile.
However, income-dependent investors
living off dividends should not concern
themselves about volatility as their in-
come should be unaffected by share price
movements, and providing shares are not
sold during a down market, paper losses
can be tolerated.
Unfortunately in real life, investors
usually panic when the share price falls
and thus sell their shares at theworst pos-
sible time, losing not only their capital,
but their source of tax efficient income as
well.
Well,whats the answer?Unfortunately
there isno one shoe fit all solution; each
investorhasunique requirements,which
need to be taken into account by a professional finan-
cial advisor. There are some investment principals,
which, when applied correctly, will ensure a tax effi-
cient secure income stream for life. Next week I will
discusstheuseofatimehorizonapproachtoprovide
for income and manage risk.
Continuing from last weeks article on Turning
capital savings into income for the purpose of re-
tiring, let us look at a share (equity) portfolio.
Shares produce income in the form of
dividends. Not all companies pay divi-
dends to their investors; some companies
elect toratherretainearnings forreinvest-
ment in the business.
In theory by retaining profits and rein-
vesting in the business, the business will
grow and the value of the shares will in-
crease. This is great for an investor with
a growth focus, but not suitable for an in-
vestor who requires income. An investor
requiring incomewill select shares on the
basisof theirpastandexpected futuredivi-
dend distributions.
Thereare twomajoradvantagesofusing
a share portfolio to produce income. First-
ly dividend growth; companies strive to
grow their dividends in excess of inflation each year.
So in theory the investors income escalates in line
with inflation or better. Keep in mind that of the four
asset classes cash, bonds, property, equity only
property and equity have the ability to grow their in-
come. The second advantage is tax; dividends are
taxed at a flat rate of 15%.
Well, whats the catch? A source of income taxed
at 15%, which grows in line with inflation or better
is surely the answer to everybodys need for income.
Yes and no! With a current average dividend yield

Importantly, this return has been achieved
at less than 64% (asmeasured by standard de-
viation) of the risk of the All Share Index, a
remarkablestatisticandproofof theeffective-
ness of the flexible strategy and mandate.
Currently the fund isparticularlywell posi-
tioned where the manager has been able to
buy shares in a number of superb companies
teamswhichhave proven to be effective stew-
ards of capital, and which can be acquired at
an attractive margin of safety.
The fund is attracted to compa-
nies where the companies man-
agement are significant share-
holders. Currently in 20 out of the
30 shares held in the fund at the
end of March 2013 the companies
are run by management with a
large shareholding in them, or
where a large strategic share-
holder exists.
This is the best way to ensure
that the interests of the investor
are alignedwith those of the com-
pany and its management. In the
same vein, the fundmanager and
his team are co-investors in the
PSG flexible fund as they believe
in the strategy of the fund. As
someone once remarked, one of the biggest
comforts of flying is that the pilot is also on
board.
Since 1 November 2004 this fund has pro-
duced an annual return of 18,1% per year (to
31March2013)which isover95%of thereturn
of the JSE All Share Index (net of all fees and
costs).
ThePSGflexible fund,managedbyJannie
Mouton as far back as 2004, is a true
wealth-creation product aimed at inves-
tors who have a medium- to
long-term investment horizon
andwhowish tohave exposure
to the equitymarkets, butwith
managed risk levels.
The beauty of a flexible man-
date is that the manager has al-
most no restrictions when it
comes to decidingwhich assets to
hold in the fund fromtime to time.
This enables him to provide the
investorswithawideopportunity
set of companies to invest in, but
also to be able to stay away from
trouble when appropriate. Jan
has a track record of making the
rightdecisions indifficultmarket
conditions. Capital preservation is a very im-
portant objective.
Investors in this fund get exposure to com-
panies in South Africa - and abroad which
meet PSG asset managements stringent in-
vestment criteria. In terms of our investment
philosophywe look for companies with a sus-
tainable competitive advantage, managed by
which were trading at highly attractive lev-
els. Traditionally, this has been a strong pre-
dictor of good returns in the past.
