t’s the start of March, which means that spring is almost in the air! After a cold few months, I’m sure we’re all ready for some warmer weather. But whilst the days are still a little chilly, our March issue will keep you warm. This month we’ve got some important updates on all things local; from the new police service in Fenland (page 24) to the latest on the Whittlesey Country Park on page 40. We’ve also welcome a new regular contributor to the team - Tony Austin. He might be a stranger to you, but this wonderful man is my father, and he’s going to try and step into the very big shoes of Geoff Oldfield and bring you some more history about Whittlesey. You can find his first article, which looks at Whittlesey during the Stone Age on page 18. I’m also delighted to announce that the popular WiTri, which was held for the first time last year at the Manor Leisure Centre, is returning again this summer. With places for children and novice adults, the WiTri triathlon is a wonderful chance for you to test your skills at swimming, cycling and running. If you’d like further information, and how you can sign up to this great event, please turn to page 8. This month our events guide is packed full of fun things to do, from a wedding show at St. Andrew’s Hall on the 22nd of March, to a charity casino evening being held on the 10th of April. Finally we also have news on the King’s Dyke crossing decision and defribulators for all celebrate their first anniversary. Lastly before I sign off, I just wanted to share our own personal good news. Dylan is ecstatic to announce that he will be a big brother in July, as we welcome our second baby to the family. I haven’t yet worked out if I’m mad or lovestruck, but I’m excited either way. Until next month, take care.

consultation extendedCambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has extended its public consultation on NHS 111 and GP Out of Hours services for an additional two weeks. The consultation will now run until Friday 6 March 2015. This extension is due to difficulties with the distribution of information over the Christmas period. Launched on 19 December 2014, the consultation is inviting local residents to give their views on a future model for NHS 111 and GP Out of Hours Services in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. With the current contracts for these services coming to an end, this is an opportunity for the CCG to think about the future of these services and how they can be improved. A number of public meetings have already taken place with further meetings planned throughout the consultation. Residents have until 5pm on 6 March to give their feedback. Dr Andrew Anderson, CCG clinical lead for Out of Hours Services said: “This consultation is to gather feedback on how we can provide good

quality NHS 111 and GP Out of Hours services to the people of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. “We want to hear your feedback, and ask you how access to the right health services can be improved so we can ensure residents get to the right place for help or advice, first time.” Residents can find out more and give their views in a number of ways:• Read the consultation document and complete the questionnaire on the CCG’s websitehttp://www.cambridgeshireandpeterboroughccg.nhs.uk/have-your-say/111-OOH.htm• Consultation documents will be available on the CCG website alongside hard copies being distributed to GP surgeries, pharmacies, dentists and libraries.• Complete a paper copy of the questionnaire found in the consultation document available on request by: 01223 725304FREEPOST: Freepost Plus RSCR-GSGK-XSHK, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG, Lockton House, Clarendon Road, Cambridge CB2 8FHEMAIL: [email protected]

Whittlesey locals strengthen community with social media

The fastest growing British social network, Streetlife aims to build stronger communities across the nation and has been described as “the online equivalent of chatting over the garden fence.” Streetlife users sign up with an email address and post code and are instantly connected to all other users within their local area – no friends lists or followers are involved. This gives users a way to share practical advice and information to an audience within the local community. To date, conversations on the site have seen locals come together to turn disused back gardens into community allotments, raise awareness about missing cats and spread the word about doorstep scammers. “The display of community spirit we’ve seen has been fantastic” said Nina Whittaker, Streetlife’s Head of Communities. “It’s obvious that there’s a real desire among many neighbours in Whittlesey to help one another and we’re delighted to provide an outlet for that”.

Whittlesey residents can find out more and connect with their local community at www.streetlife.com. How it works:n Sign up for free at streetlife.com with a postcode and email address.n Users can post messages, events, polls and pictures.n Other Streetlife users who live nearby are able to respond.n Neighbours help one another by sharing knowledge, opinions and advice about the area. How it’s used:n Finding local people with shared interests and passions.n Lending and giving away belongings to neighbours.n Organising community events and campaigns.n Exchanging recommendations for local businesses and tradespeople.

Streetlife, the local social network, has come to Whittlesey

WHITTLESEY WI2015 started on a good note with members enjoying a lovely meal in January at the New Crown. February's meeting was an open one, and in spite of the weather there was a good turnout of members and visiting members too from Ladysmith, Coates and Thorney. The speaker Linda Scoles was most amusing and interesting recounting her life being married to someone in the American Airforce stationed all

over the world. She certainly cheered us all up with her stories on a cold winters night. They eventually retired here in East Anglia. She is returning in December to give another talk. The next meeting is on Tuesday 3rd of March when members will meet at St Andrew's Church Hall at 7pm where David Mason will give a talk on the History of this lovely Church .Members will then return to the Church Hall. New members are most welcome, call Ginny 205148.

Cllr Dave Mason

I must begin my article this month by paying tribute to one of our true Whittlesey gentlemen, Geoff Oldfield who has contributed his final piece to “Discovering Whittlesea” through his “Pages in History” - his 80th submission. Long before this magazine began its successful venture Geoff was the fount of all knowledge in Whittlesey, if you wanted to know anything about the history of the town then Geoff Oldfield was the first port of call. I had the pleasure and privilege for fourteen years to work alongside Geoff as a Trustee of The Whittlesey Charity and our paths also crossed during Geoff’s time as Captain of the bell ringers at St Andrews Church where I was and indeed I still am Churchwarden. Enjoy your “retirement” Geoff and on behalf of Whittlesey I thank you. My thanks to all who attended the Public Meeting at Whittlesey Christian Church last month to learn more about the Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid project. After the formalities of the presentations by Pastor Brian Smithyman and myself it was heartening to see so many people staying behind to enjoy refreshments and to offer their help in so many ways. It was yet another demonstration of how Whittlesey citizens are so keen to help their fellow residents who are struggling through no fault of their own and confirmed my belief that in Whittlesey we have a healthy and caring community that goes from strength to strength. We are now extending our operation by providing information through the three primary schools and the Sir Harry Smith Community College and I am delighted that The Whittlesey Rotary Club are adopting the project and giving it their wholehearted support during the coming year. Should any organisation wish me to attend their meetings to explain the project further thaen please do not hesitate in getting in touch. Congratulations to Daniel Flack and Savannah Evans, two pupils of Sir Harry Smith Community College who recently passed out as two of the inaugural police cadets of the newly formed Cambridgeshire Constabulary Cadet scheme. It was a great pleasure for Ann and I to attend their passing out parade ceremony at the Thomas Deacon Academy in Peterborough in the company of the Police Commissioner, Sir Graham Bright and

senior police officers. After their initial training Daniel and Savannah will be employed on official occasions in Whittlesey and are shining examples of young people of Whittlesey in whom we should all be proud. Not for the first time I am appealing to the dog owners who continue to fail to clean up after their animals when walking them out in our town. Dog fouling is not only anti-social it does carry serious health problems, particularly for young children. There are ample bins in and around the town to deposit waste so there can be no excuse for continued dog fouling. The same comments apply to those thoughtless people who deposit litter indiscriminately around the town. You only have to count the number of litter bags waiting for collection after the valiant efforts of our Street Pride team to appreciate the problem. Christmas 2015 may seem a long way off but the Whittlesey Christmas Lights Committee are already planning for the next festive season and would welcome an approach from any business in the town who would like to discuss acquiring a display this year. Wherever possible the Lights Committee will purchase a suitable display and arrange for the erection of the display by an approved contractor providing that the business concerned are able to supply the necessary electricity at their expense. Any enquiries can be directed either through myself or through David Wright at his shop in Market Street. Finally please do not hesitate to write to me at the Town Council offices at Grosvenor House with matters that concern you. As you will have read on this page there are good things happening in Whittlesey but all too often I read negative comments in the social media. If matters are not right than ask yourself - “What can I do to put matters right?”

| A word from - your Mayor Dave Mason

LADYSMITH W.I.The year is off to a strong start after the first two very enjoyable meetings and an afternoon tea.The March meeting is on Tuesday 10th at 7.30pm when we welcome a "Games Maker" to re-create the atmosphere of the 2012 Olympic experience and give us the insider's view of that amazing event. Proudly in association with Wright's of Whittlesey

he clouds in the east threatened more snow; the wind ruffling reeds in the ditch where the previous day’s frost still lay. Two children had run down to the water looking for their father returning from a day’s fishing on the mere that stretched away south to the brown of distant hills. Behind them the thatched roundhouse sat between the wood and the mere. Their mother was in the process of calling the geese through a gate in the thorn fence that surrounded the homestead. Their sounds mingled with those of sheep that had been folded in the byre for the last few days while they gave birth. February was an important month in the year with the arrival of the lambs to the five families that occupied the islands which one day would be Whittlesey and Eastrea. Pigs grazed and rooted in the woods that covered most of the dry land, sheep on the pasture cleared from the forest, geese and ducks on the grass close to the marsh and fish from the fenland meres were the mainstays of life. Round the little homestead the thorn hedge had been layered and filled to make as impenetrable a barrier as possible. When winter stretched out his icy fingers over the marsh then wolves might come down from the high lands, across the ice on the hunt for game. In hard winters it wasn’t unknown for them to raid the few settlements and lonely steadings out in the fen. The children huddled under their furs on such nights listening to the distant howls as the pack roamed the woods of the island. In less harsh times the families hunted the deer there together, sharing out the meat. It was a precious resource with the skin, sinews, bones all being put to good use. Their grandfather was the patriarch of the islanders living with their uncle’s family in a larger roundhouse on the eastern island. Last summer he had taken the two children, for the first time, on one of his trading trips to the mainland. This settlement, partly on dry land and partly on platforms raised out over the water was a hive of activity and the noise, bustle and smells awed the children, used as they were to the small family groups on the islands. But their world, though limited, was rich and

intense nevertheless. They possessed an inborn knowledge of plants, berries and fungi; which were edible and to be avoided. They knew the calls of birds and could tell from tracks in the woods whether deer or wild boar had passed that way. They helped their mother at the hearth, their father with his eel and fish traps. They gathered in sedge and reeds for thatching and fodder. Life was the involving business of survival; of food and shelter. Although they didn’t realise it their community was changing from that of a hunter-gatherer to a mix of grazing and hunting. Though this still meant that the islands could only support half a dozen families, their descendants would soon begin to clear the woods and grow cereal crops, the first small steps towards the land we know today.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Whittlesey, Eastrea & Coates areas and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Garden Jobs for Marchl Mow the lawn on dry days.Give the lawn a thorough rake to remove the remnants of winter and to lift the grass and weeds ready for cutting. Mow the grass if the weather is mild enough and the lawn is showing signs of growth. Ensure the first cut of the season is light, raising the blades slightly higher than your mowers normal cutting position. March is also a great month to do any repairs to your lawn, either with new turf or by re-seeding.

l Cut back Cornus grown for its winter stem.l Cut back grasses left uncut over winter.l Open greenhouse and conservatory vents on warm days.l Deal with fresh weeds before they get out of hand.Weeding isn’t a popular gardening job but it is best to pull any weeds when they’re new and young to prevent spreading. The improving weather conditions don’t just benefit our plants – weeds will also take full advantage of the better weather. Don’t forget to target the weeds on driveways, paths and patio areas.

pring is usually well under way by mid-March and the frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s time to blow the cobwebs away and get busy preparing seed beds and borders, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up and planting around the garden.

l Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes.Early varieties of potatoes such as ‘Rocket’ and ‘Swift’ can be planted in the early part of March. If you have kept them in a light and frost-free environment until now they should be ‘chitting’ (chitting is where there is slight sprouting from the potatoes). Chitting before planting can encourage earlier and heavier cropping.

l Protect new spring shoots from slugs.Insects and pests will start to emerge as the temperature increases, so check all plants and treat immediately. To prevent slugs and snails having a feast thinly scatter slug pellets around vulnerable plants.

l Plant summer flowering bulbs.l Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials.l Top dress containers with fresh compost. Pansy/Violas

One of the most popular bedding plants,

pansies are hardy annuals and have a

stunning array of colours to choose from.

They are good for containers, borders and

ground cover.

‘Pansy’ and ‘viola’ are common words often

used to describe the same plant. What’s

the difference? Pansies generally have four

petals pointing upwards and only one pointing

down. Violas have three petals pointing up

and two pointing down.

January, February and March saw three young men from the Sir Harry Smith Community College join Streetpride, as part of their BTEC Public Services course. As part of the course Adam Ruff, Steven Surridge and Thomas Dietz helped to clear parks and gardens of rubbish that had been left. They did this with great diligence and pride, they are a credit to their College. We have dedicated individual Streetpride members who regularly clear selected areas of Whittlesey; Ken Creed one of our more recent recruits sent us the following details after of one of his many outings along Cycle route 63 to Peterborough. “I collected 10 bags of assorted rubbish along with about 150 beer cans, a mattress, pillow, man’s jacket, a pair of trainers and a shopping trolley. There is still some more rubbish nearer to the Funthams Lane, Millennium Bridge X road, which I will deal with another day.” Fred Mills, Robert Boddington, Robert Barnes and others are equally hard working in their selected areas. A special thank you to our regular dedicated members who attend our scheduled litterpicks in all sorts of weather to clear Whittlesey of the

A new police service in FenlandHello, I’m Pc Phil Richardson and I am the new Police Licensing officer for the Fenland area looking after pubs, clubs and anywhere with an alcohol license, also covering late night refreshment establishments (‘Take a way’s’ to you and I). I have been a police officer for 11 years and I have worked mainly with

Neighbourhood Policing teams and Anti-Social Behaviour teams over the recent years. My move into Licensing seems to be the next step along the antisocial behaviour path, as it is noted that where there is antisocial behaviour there is often alcohol involved. The reason for this introduction is to reassure

you that, should you have issues about any licensed premises I will work with the local policing teams to try and resolve those issues. You can raise concerns over illegal activities, underage drinking or any aspect of criminal / rowdy behaviour that affects your quality of life. There are numerous ways to get in touch with the police regarding issues around any licenced premise and indeed any local issue.• You can call us by dialling 101.• You can pop into your local police station and speak to one of our Enquiry officers who will take all the details from you.• You can make reports to your Neighbourhood watch co-ordinator or use internet forums such as “Shape Your Place” www.shapeyourplace.org and log onto your local area. If you wish to remain anonymous you can inform us of issues through crime stoppers https://crimestoppers-uk.org or by phoning 0800 555 111.

GREAT EASTER FUN FILLED FAYRE

Each year at Christmas or Easter, we host one of these very popular family fun filled ‘give away’ days. There is something for everyone to see and do – Games, Quiz’s, Stalls, Competitions - This year you will also be able to enter a completely free raffle to win a joint of Lamb from J. Jones Butchers. Or try your hand at entering our great Easter Bonnet competition covering 3 age groups from pre-school to adults. This will be judged by the Mayor & Mayoress of Whittlesey, Councillor & Mrs David & Ann Mason.

SUNDAY APRIL 5TH At 10.45EASTER CELEBRATION PERFORMANCE

Whittlesey Christian Church really does break the mould when it comes to people’s concept of a traditional Easter Service. We are privileged to have some extremely talented people when it comes to music and the Creative Arts. 3 prolific singer/songwriters consistently introduce new songs spanning a wide range of music

styles, while our Creative Arts team, covering such areas as dance, drama, mime and puppets, constantly amaze us with their energy and creativity. All Our departments will be be working together to make this Easter Celebration Performance well worth making the effort to come along and enjoy. Easter is a fantastic time of the year, celebrating when Jesus died to offer a new hope and life to us all. We are just coming out of the long winter months and new life seems to be happening everywhere we look. However, for some it is very much a feeling of - ‘business as usual’ – Life appears to be one problem after another, any sense of hope for better things around the corner has long since disappeared. Please let me encourage you to find the courage to come along and let us help to brighten your day, and if you will allow us, walk with you through your period of stress.

TWO GREAT EVENTS FOR YOUR DIARY

| A word from Brian Smithyman

| Policing your area by Paul Harris, Whittlesey Geographic SergeantThe winter months have seen an increase in the number of car crimes and theft from sheds in the Whittlesey area. We have as a result been placing dedicated patrols targeting such offences and person of interest to us. As yet no arrests have been made but we will continue to robustly police this issue until a breakthrough is made. To assist us please can you insure that your vehicles are left locked and secure at all times and that items of value are left out of sight. Can I also remind people that defrosting your windscreen on winter mornings is best done with you standing by the car. I have advised a number of people during my patrols that leaving the car unsecure on the drive with keys in it, with engine running, only invites trouble, plus potential grief if your car is stolen as a result with your insurance company. Traffic police have continued patrols in the area to assist with speeding drivers and those driving

recklessly in the town. A number of tickets have been issued and one person has been banned from driving for 16 months through drink driving in our town. A group is also currently awaiting prosecution for hare coursing activities in our rural community and we continue to work with farmers to catch more persons committing such crimes. May I take this opportunity to welcome PC Rem Kajzer to my team. He joins the team as a full time constable who will assist me with tackling issues in Whittlesey, Coates, Eastrea, Wimblington, Doddington and Benwick. May I also welcome and congratulate Savannah and Daniel who recently passed out as police cadets. Both from Sir Harry Smith School who have shown great dedication and commitment to complete their induction programme. Well Done!! I look forward to working with you both soon.

1. Baptism - What is the difference between a Baptism and a Christening? There is no difference; it is the same service which has two names. Can I have my child baptised if I don’t attend church? The answer is yes. What if we are not married? Again the answer is yes. Who can be godparents? You can ask anyone to be a godparent but they should be over 16 and baptised themselves. Traditionally the number was three - two godmothers and one godfather for a girl, two godfathers and one godmother for a boy. These days parents tend to pick between three and five. You should discuss this with the priest conducting the service.2. Can I get married in one parish if I live in another? Our rules changed a few years ago permitting a wider choice. If one of you lives in the parish of the church where you wish to marry then you can get married there. If you live within the four parishes that we look after you can choose to get married in one of the four churches. If you were baptised in the church then you can marry there. If you have lived in a parish for a period of six

months at any time in your life you can get married in that church. These are only a few of the rules. If you would like to marry in a particular church then ask the local Vicar. Can I get married in church if I or my partner is divorced? The answer is yes and this needs to be discussed with the Vicar. 3. Why are the cones put outside church before a funeral service? They are out there to reserve spaces for the hearse, limousines and cars of those who are in the funeral procession to the church. Seats are also reserved in church. These are for those who are following the coffin into the church. Your cooperation with these matters is greatly appreciated.4. Are the churches open? St Mary’s, St Andrew’s, Holy Trinity in Coates and St Thomas’ in Pondersbridge are all open seven days a week from 9.00am to 4.00pm. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

This month we would like to take the opportunity to make some things clearer about our work associated with the Parish Church. The following are questions we are often asked. Please note that the answers apply to the Church of England.

We seem to have gone through the winter months quite quickly and all too soon the close season on our Fenland Drains and rivers draws to a close on 14th March. With several of our waters fishing really well make sure you get your share of the cracking action on offer around Whittlesey. Throughout the winter months I

think it’s fair to say that the water above Ashline sluice has been the real hotspot and has been a revelation with anglers coming from some way away as well as locals to get in on the roach action. Pike anglers have also done well with lots of double figure fish taken from the likes of the Twenty Foot Drain and Glassmoor Bank. It’s time to switch to stillwaters now though and already we can expect to see catches on the up as the weather starts to improve. Since anglers were allowed to fish year

Nigel (203676) and Gill (202563) | A word from - Revd. Nigel and Revd. Gill

| Fishing news by Ken Wade round stillwaters in the area have flourished. Decoy Lakes has become established as one of the best in Eastern England and widely acclaimed as in the top ten fisheries in the country such is the quality of sport on offer. Whilst the Decoy complex caters for the thousands of match men we also have quite a few other waters on our doorstep that may not be as well known but can, in fact do, provide some outstanding sport. Kingsland Fishery has two very good carp lakes, complemented with a silver fish pool, Railway Lakes is a cracking water for both the big fish anglers looking for big double figure fish and a very good shallow pool which provides most with a fine days pleasure fishing. East Delph has been re vamped and anglers looking for top quality big fish action should give it a try. Looking for a quiet days pleasure fishing? then give Northey Park Fishery a try. Lots of smaller pools to try and all full of fish. The new boys on the block are the lakes at Float Fish Farm Fishery. Growing older can mean making some difficult choices!

Perhaps you’re an older person living at home thinking you could use a little extra help from time to time? Or perhaps you are caring for an older person who is determined to stay living in their own home and you need a few hours respite each week, so you can have a break. In the UK, an older person is faced with many choices and while many will actively choose to continue residing in the comfort and security of their own home, others will put off decisions until a crisis emerges. The desire to remain independent and maintain quality of life is often at the heart of these decisions with over 90% of older people wishing to remain in their own home. Growing older often means:• Everyday tasks may become more difficult • There are increased frailty and safety risks • Increased stress on family members who are worried about health and safety of their older relative and not being available to help them

So it's important to take time to plan for who you would like to help you and what help you would like to maintain your independence! The 5 most common situations prompting the need for some additional assistance:1. An injury, illness or medical condition has left the person less able to function independently2. Advanced age makes the person less able to function independently3. The family notices their loved one is struggling with everyday tasks4. The family member feels guilty if they don't offer to help out but live too far or work full time5. The family member needs more assistance after the death of a spouse or partner Home Instead Senior Care Peterborough is a local home care company covering the Oundle area.

| Community newsCouncil Committee approve King’s Dyke replacementCounty Councillors agreed on 4 February to go ahead with plans to replace King’s Dyke level crossing in Whittlesey

The County Council’s Economy and Environment Committee members decided that a formal planning application should be made for the bridge and bypass option to the south of the exiting A605, known in the consultation as Location 3. Location 3 was the most popular of the three alternatives in the public consultation, which ran from 30 October to 15 December, 2014. A majority of 58% backed the route, which also involves the construction of roundabouts at Funthams Lane and the brickworks access road junctions. This location was also the Whittlesey Town Council’s preferred route. The latest technical estimates from the Council’s consultants suggest the cost of replacing the level crossing at Location 3 may be up to £16.9m including contingencies for unforeseen circumstances. It is anticipated that as the scheme develops and a number of risks are removed, the overall cost of the project will be reduced. The majority of funding has already been allocated with £5m from the Growth Deal, £3m from the Local Transport Body and £3.5m County Council funding. A planning application is being prepared by Council

Officers and will be put forward in the summer. Prior to a planning application being submitted several site visits are needed and a first stage Road Safety Audit must be undertaken. Council Officers are working with Fenland District Council, the Internal Drainage Board, Network Rail and local businesses to develop the design for the scheme. The timetable for replacement of King’s Dyke Level Crossing is shown below, but this is subject to change should there be a public enquiry into the crossing replacement or negotiations with landowners prove unsuccessful.Spring 2015 – Preparing planning application Summer 2015 – Planning Application submitted; negotiations with landowners; tendering for contractorAutumn 2015 – Start of detailed design work with chosen contractorJanuary 2016 – Earliest possible start date for on site worksWinter 2016 – Earliest possible completed construction of level crossing replacement. Construction will last between 9 months and a year depending on the final detailed design.

On Wednesday 28th January the Whittlesey Town Planning Committee was convened to review submitted planning applications, including the revised planning application submitted by Sainsbury’s (application number F/YR14/0991). Sainsbury’s revision included the addition of 2 further fuel pumps (bringing the total to 6), increasing the car parking spaces to 398, creation of concessions within the store to increase the range of services available to customers, and a variation to the layout of the roundabout to the North West of the site. Following three registered speakers; Marie Allaway GKA acting on behalf of Sainsbury’s, Bruce Smith of Whitacre Management on behalf of Sainsbury’s, Bernard Gray-Esson on behalf of Whittlesey Country Park, and in the public forum (to allow any member of the public to address the council) Mr Forster, owner of Guildenburgh Diving and Leisure Centre. Town Councillors debated the application and Members voted to approve. Whilst the revised planning application must now be approved by Fenland District Council, this must be seen as a further positive step towards the building of the Sainsbury’s store and Country Park. In his address to the gathering, Bernard Gray-Esson said; ‘We (Whittlesey Country Park) now have in place an elected committee following

Whittlesey Country Park - update

many public meetings. A draft constitution is ready to be ratified, a bank account including required signatures has been opened, a competition for a new logo has been successful, advanced meetings and input from Ferry Meadows have taken place, and respected Whittlesey organisations have requested to have dialogue with us with a view to add to our future plans’. Mr Gray-Esson, also pointed out that Whittlesey is the only Fenland town without a major food store, and urged the Planning Committee to continue with their support of the application. Over the coming weeks as further progress is made, the Whittlesey Country Park Committee will continue to keep the residents and friends of the park updated, and remains grateful for the continued support for this project from the community.Julie Shortland, WCP Secretary

Charity Casino Games Evening - Friday 10th AprilWhich number? Black or red? Odd or even? High or low? Or perhaps go for one that falls in the first dozen? Hmmm . . . . The origins of the modern game of roulette are still debated. Entertainment for Roman legionnaires who played it by turning a chariot on its side, pushing an arrow into the ground and spinning the wheel. Something brought back from the Far East by travelling merchants of Marco Polo’s time. The results of Blaise Pascal’s endeavours to build a perpetual motion machine. Who knows? Folklore has it that one of the Blanc brothers, who developed the modern game in the 1800s, promised his soul to the devil in return for the secret of the wheel’s propensity to make money. My daughter, Tori Bos, who attended Sir Harry Smith’s and is now in her first year at Exeter university, is due to climb Machu Pichu in the Andes in August, in support of Worldwide Cancer

Research. The Whittlesey Conservative Club are supporting her efforts and have very kindly offered their facilities to stage a fun casino games evening as part of her fundraising endeavours. The event is planned for the evening of Friday 10th April (the Friday following Easter), and will run from 7.30pm until around 10.00pm. £5.00 will buy three hundred monopoly dollars for use at the tables, and modest prizes are provided for the lucky players who cash-in the most chips. A great opportunity to take on the wheel, and try your luck, without the fear of losing your shirt! The club bar will be open and available. Further information can be obtained by e-mailing [email protected]. Donations to Worldwide Cancer Research can also be made via Tori’s “JustGiving” page on the web: www.justgiving.com/Victoria-Bos/

The Myths of Treatment Explained...

Contact DetailsAddress: Grosvenor House, Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey PE7 1AQ;

T : 01733 785214, W: www.whittlesey-osteopaths.com, E: [email protected]

Welcome to the world of osteopathy. This month we would like to share with you the rational behind the techniques we use to engage your body.

Each technique we use has the same aims in mind:• optimise the blood and nerve flow to the tissue in question and,• ensure the area is moving the best it can. The art comes in understanding which type of techniques your body best responds to and in what order. A description of each technique is provided below in alphabetical order.

Articulation This technique is targeted at stiff joints. The cause of joint stiffness maybe the tissues relating to the joint itself or the muscles/tendons/ligaments that work over it. Whichever the reason, articulation involves isolating that joint and then moving it in a manner that relaxes or stretches these tissues enabling greater movement.Exercise prescription Exercises are given to either increase range of movement in a particular area, strengthen an area or alter the bodies control of that area. Because it is an activity you perform, it gives you control and makes your conscious mind aware of what that area can and can’t do. Thus you become less likely to re-aggravate the area during daily life because you understand it better. Exercises allow the treatment to continue long after your appointment and are usually given to reinforce the gains achieved during the treatment. Involuntary motion Involuntary motion (IM) is aimed at improving the general health of an area. IM as the name suggests, is the movement created by all the involuntary (I.e. sub-conscious) activities occurring within our bodies, such as our blood flowing, heart beating, muscles contracting, nerves firing, etc. The summation of these activities creates a characteristic movement (termed involuntary movement) that can be felt but not seen. An analogy would be the vibrations of the mechanical parts of an engine, they can be felt but not seen. The IM will differ in areas of trauma or dysfunction because the involuntary activities are different. I.e. In an area of high inflammation the blood flow will be greater, the nerves will be firing more which will create more muscular tension in the area, etc. Therefore, using IM we can locate the dysfunctional area and then manipulate the dysfunctional IM to a more healthier form. Manipulation Like articulation, manipulation techniques are targeted at improving the joint range of movement. The technique in principle is simply a quick articulation and used on joints that have a certain type of stiffness, i.e. those caused by increased air pressure within the joint space. The quick movement, creates a space on the outer covering of the joint, allowing the higher pressure air to escape . The process of air being released creates the clicking or popping noise. Once the air is released, the joint pressure normalises and the stiffness resolves. Soft tissue Soft tissue techniques are aimed at releasing tissue tension. This ultimately improves the blood flow to the area as well as the balance of the local joints. There are a diverse range of soft tissue techniques because there are many different tissue types (e.g. bone, muscle, ligament, fascia, tendon, etc) and they are located at different depths within the body. Each tissue is built in the same manner however a group of fibres surround by a fluid and encased in a sheath. The soft tissue techniques either:-• increases the length of fibres thus lengthening the tissue,• improving the fibres ability to slide past one another thus improving their suppleness, • improving the fluid movement surrounding the fibres thus improving their resting tone. Usually during treatment we would use a range of these techniques with the ultimate goal of helping your body heal itself. Contray to common belief, we do not fix you, you fix yourself our help. Have a lovely month.

Time to Paint a brighter Parish?Over the last year, Parish Councils, community groups and residents have saved thousands of pounds on the cost of paint,

thanks to Cambridgeshire Community Reuse and Recycling Network – CCORRN, a local community organisation based in March, which runs the Cambridgeshire Community RePaint Scheme. A team of staff and volunteers collects, sorts, tests and redistributes paint under contract to AmeyCespa on behalf of Cambridgeshire County Council. Because of this contract CCORRN is able to offer low cost paint to over 80 community groups and Parish Councils across the county. On average, paint is just £1 a litre.

Even better is that CCORRN holds a monthly draw to give away FREE paint to community groups who are looking to improve their local facilities. The Scheme has given away nearly 3,000 litres and distributed nearly 19,000 litres of paint over the last year. Anyone can become a member of the CCORRN Community RePaint Scheme and benefit from the great value paint range on offer, from hard-wearing interior emulsions and exterior masonry paints, to glosses and woodcare too. Cambridgeshire Community RePaint is part of a network of more than 70 similar organisations across the UK. You can visit CCORRN at: Unit 3 Commercial Road, March, PE15 8QP Monday to Saturday 10am - 4pm and at other times by appointment, or you can contact one of the partner outlets around the county. If you would like more info, call 01354 607667 or email [email protected] or visit the website www.ccorrn.org.uk .

Defibrillators For All UpdateThe 3rd March 2015 will see Defibrillators For All Update reach their first anniversary of placing the first Public access Defibrillator in Whittlesey. Since then the charity have had numerous fundraising events and had a huge amount of support from the local community. They have received donations from the Mandy Lee memorial fund (thanks to continuous fundraising from Di Coulson) McCains, Whittlesey Council, Whittlesey Lions, NISA, North Bank Facebook Fund, and BGL. Defibrillators For All have also become the preferred charity for several groups. This has resulted in them being able to provide Defibrillators at the rate of one per month. The charity have also supported and inspired other groups to fundraise and purchase a defibrillator, including the Three horseshoes at Turves and Whittlesey Athletic football club (Feldale Field). Whittlesey is already a much safer place, but there is much more work to do. During 2015 Defibrillators For All plan to visit as many local groups as possible to ensure everyone is aware of how easy these pieces of equipment are to use. They also plan to place defibrillators in all

local schools, as well as to continue to place them in and around the town. Details of where the defibrillators have been placed are below:

The new tax year will soon be with us so now is a good time to get organised because, if you reduce tax there is more money for you. Tax comes in many disguises, most of us expect to have our earnings taxed and to pay VAT when we buy many goods and services, but some taxes can legitimately be reduced or erased completely. A good example of this is putting surplus funds held ‘for a rainy day’ in an ISA where the interest earned is paid tax free, interest on other savings and deposit accounts are usually taxed at 20% before it is credited to your account. If saving a lump sum for later times a pension arrangement might be even more tax efficient because, for every £80 you put in tax relief at 20% makes the investment £100 – however there are limits and you might even find that if your employer makes the payment you don’t have to pay National Insurance (another tax) on those contributions. If you run your own business, have you considered whether changing to a limited company could save you money? A limited liability company may also protect you in the event of legal action against you, so there are many aspects to consider. Get your accountant and independent financial adviser speaking to each other. Many families have created wealth over their working lives and might have inherited some along the way, if your estate is worth over £325,000 you might have an Inheritance Tax

(IHT) issue for your beneficiaries to sort out; the obvious starting point is to ensure your Wills are valid and up to date. A couple could have two IHT allowances to use – provided the executors make the application. If your estate is likely to exceed £650,000 – you really should get some professional advice while there is time to make plans that will allow access to the assets you might require later, and safeguarding other assets to ensure your chosen beneficiaries get more than the tax man! Pensions can provide up to 25% of the fund value as a tax free lump sum, the remaining fund can generate income that is taxed. If you cash in more than the 25% tax free allowance that lump sum is taxable – if you are not careful this could be at 40% or even 45%. A well structured approach can reduce exposure to taxation so there is more to spend on retirement.Free Initial ReviewIf you have financial concerns and you are looking for some advice, why not have an initial consultation at no cost to you by arranging a meeting with me? Keep in mind that the value of an investment can go down as well as up, you may not get back as much as you put in and past performance is not an indicator of future returns. Tax planning is not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Tax treatment varies according to individual circumstances and is subject to change.

| Legal Corner by Susan Pearson – Managing Partner

Are you buying a house jointly with someone else?If so it is essential that you should give some thought to what will happen in the future, whether you are buying as a married couple or as partners. Whatever your own individual circumstances you will need to consider what may happen when your present relationship ends whether by death, separation, divorce or other cause. If you are buying property jointly there are two types of ownership you should consider:-

Beneficial Joint TenantsMeans that you will own the property in equal shares, and that on death of either of you, the property will become the sole property of the survivor. This is the usual basis for those buying as husband and wife and especially as first time marriages.

Tenants in Common If you buy on this basis it means that you

own the property in specified shares (which may well still be equally). In the event of the death of a joint owner the share of that partner will not transfer to the other partner automatically and instead forms part of that partner’s estate and will be dealt with by his or her will.

Married and unmarried couples should also think about how much of the deposit each partner is putting up for the purchase and how best to preserve this if a breakup were to occur. The courts have considerable discression when making decisions over houses within divorce proceedings and take into consideration child welfare. If you have any doubts as to your own position please ask our conveyancing team for advice.

The right advice now can help to avoid problems in the future.

VOLUNTEERS from “Safe Local Trades” in Peterborough joined forces in their own DIY SOS-style transformation project for the city’s newly opened Dementia Resource Centre. The facility, on Lincoln Road, opened its door last September, providing a hub for dementia support, (offering information, advice, activity groups and training for carers). But it was when the centre appealed for help in transforming a patch of wasteland into a community garden - where patients and groups can plant flowers and grow vegetables - that “Safe Local Trades” came to the rescue. Following an appeal to members by “Safe Local Trades” director, Eileen Le Voi, free materials and labour by generous volunteers have led to the revamping of the area to create a calming and relaxing space. Among those offering their help were Travis Perkins in Ivatt Way, Peterborough, who provided all the building materials free of charge. The design and transformation of the garden was thanks to “Safe Local Trades” landscape experts, members Oakfield UK and Style Home Improvements. “Safe Local Trades” director, Eileen Le Voi, who co-ordinated the project, said: “These generous members had no hesitation in offering their services, skills and time to this remarkable and very worthwhile project – I can’t thank them enough. “The end result looks wonderful, and we all hope that the patients and activity groups using

the garden will get enormous pleasure from it.” Rob Henchy, interim commissioning manager, Adult Social Care, Peterborough City Council, said: “This act of kindness and generosity, reminiscent of the BBC’s “DIY SOS” programme, is thanks to individuals from Oakfield UK, for excavating the land, and from Style Home Improvements, for laying the paving slabs, and of course to Travis Perkins, for donating the materials for the ground works. “A huge thank you from everyone at the Dementia Resource Centre to you all and especially to Eileen Le Voi from “Safe Local Trades”, Peterborough, for making this happen.” As the Dementia Resource Centre was so grateful, a plaque was erected on the wall, thanking “Safe Local Trades” and their members for donating their time and labour in making it all possible. The centre is run by the Alzheimer’s Society and funded by Peterborough City Council.

Run for fun!In February the children of Alderman Jacobs School took part in a fun run to raise money for cancer research having been inspired by an ex pupil who they knew had recently been diagnosed with the illness. They organised, marshalled and coordinated the run on Friday 6th February in which every child was invited to run in their onesies. This event followed a cake sale that they had previously arranged before Christmas and brings their total to date to over £600 pounds. Once they had heard about their friend they decided to raise money to help find a cure for the disease; something we could all benefit from.Lois Russell, Ben Peters and Lauren Hills have

managed to fit “the fine details” between their lessons in order for the event to proceed. Their drive and persistence to see this through and their dedication to the event has left many staff at the school feeling very proud. They are an example to us all.N Baker, AJS

| Pets’ corner By Whittlesey Veterinary Centre

Neutering your petNeutering is the term used for the surgical removal of an animals reproductive organs. In the case of males, it is the removal of the testicles and in females, it is the removal of the ovaries and the uterus.

Neutering can benefit all of our pets including rabbits and ferrets not just cats and dogs.Neutering can reduce the risk of certain types of cancers in both male and females most noticeably mammary and testicular.

With dogs, it can encourage calmer, less aggressive behaviour, along with a sensible training programme.

It can reduce the amount of ‘male’ attention females can get when they are in season, and will prevent phantom pregnancies.

For males it can help reduce unwanted sexual behaviours, reducing the risk of aggression towards other males and reduces the chance of males escaping and seeking out a local bitch in season.

Bitches will no longer come into season, this also eliminates the risk of womb infections (pyometra) which can be fatal.

With cats, neutering can reduce the chance of males fighting and roaming,

With females they wont have a season or any unwanted litters.

Cats can start having litters as early as 4 months old.

Cats and Dogs don’t respect family relationships and siblings will mate, so keeping a male and a female together, even if they are related, will not stop them from mating, this can lead to unwanted litters, birth defects and complications.

Neutering won’t change the way your pets behave, many people worry the pets personality will change, this is not true. Your pet may however put on weight. Animals that have been neutered do not need as many calories as entire animals, it is advisable to reduce your pet’s food after neutering, perhaps choose a specifically designed food for neutered pets.

The operations are very safe although all anaesthetic techniques carry a risk, the operations are very straight forward and are routine for most vets, they are performed in under an hour and animals are usually recovered enough to go home the same day.

If you have any questions you can call us here at the practice, we can advise you on your pets needs.

Whittlesey residents could gain a new Community Nature Park as part of revised plans for new homes on the Showfields. In December 2013, Fenland District Council refused permission for plans to build up to 249 homes on the Showfields site in north Whittlesey on grounds of flood risk, a decision that was upheld by the Planning Inspector. Now a new planning application for up to 220 homes has been submitted, but only on land identified by the Environment Agency as in Flood Zone 1 and therefore suitable for new homes. Linked to these proposals, a second planning application has been submitted to enable up to 23 acres of land in north Whittlesey to be used as recreational space. Although local people use the land for dog walking and other leisure pursuits, it is privately owned by Showfields Ltd. The company now intends to gift the land to the community, as well as to provide financial assistance to turn it into a Nature Park with new points of access, more wildlife habitats and greater biodiversity. A spokesman for Showfields Ltd said: “Showfields Ltd listened carefully to the views of the Planning

COMMUNITY NATURE PARK AND NEW HOMES PLAN FOR WHITTLESEY

Inspector and the community and as a result has made two significant changes to our plans for new homes on the Showfields. “We have reduced the number of houses proposed from 249 to 220, so homes will only be built on land significantly above the record water level and identified by the Environment Agency as suitable for housing. Importantly, the Environment Agency has also confirmed that this new development will in no way add to the flood risk of neighbouring homes. “In tandem with these proposals we are planning to gift 23 acres of adjacent land to the town. It is widely recognised that there is a shortage of leisure space in north Whittlesey and hopefully this land or a least a substantial part of it can be dedicated to satisfying this requirement. Whilst we are happy to assist in setting up a new Community Nature Park, we want local people to take the lead in deciding how best to bring this land into community use. “Our renewed application has been submitted to Fenland District Council and we look forward to working with the local community on our revised proposals.”

| Motoring news “TWIGGIES TIPS”Hello there, my name is Mark Twigg from MT Cars and MTC Subaru in Whittlesey. We thought it would be a nice idea to help you with purchasing a new/used car, maintaining your car or even simply staying safe in your current car. On the odd occasion we’ll also be reporting the latest news relating to cars.

So in this issue we thought we would mention what’s happening in world of both of our franchises.

Subaru are about to launch the all new Subaru Outback, the Outback has been a main contender for Subaru for many years and has now been brought right up to date with lots of new technology! Such as Eye sight, Eye sight is a revolutionary piece of technology which helps and guides the driver in many different ways such as, collision avoidance technology, lane

sway and departure warning, lead vehicle status alert and adaptive cruise control, all of this can be explained in much more detail when you come and see the new Outback for yourself. Subaru are also launching the long awaited Forester in a Diesel Auto, which we should have in the showroom ready to test drive and show in the first week of March. We have recently taken on the Great Wall franchise too, which is a 4 wheel drive pickup, the range consists of 3 an S, SE and a Tracker, and they start from £14,998.00 + VAT, even the entry model comes with air conditioning, leather and Bluetooth! This has been met with a fantastic response! Having now sold 6 in our first month. Whilst we’re on the subject of success, our Subaru franchise has achieved in its first 8 months 3rd best dealer nationally! And for this we would like to thank all our customers for their support.

Calling all engaged or soon to be engaged couples! A new year brings with it preparations and hopes for the year ahead. It may be that booking a holiday is in your thoughts. For some it may be time spent at home but for others it could be the trip of a life time and for most something in between. For some couples the planning of a holiday may be connected to a truly significant event in their lives. Getting married is one of the most significant event in any couples relationship. Before this event can take place a lot of personal and practical preparations have to be made. We hope our Wedding Fayre will be of help to you.
