This issue is fuller than ever with features, advice and ideas. Now Stoptober has ended I hope that all

those who gave up smoking for the month are continuing into November.

Research has found that if you can stop smoking for a whole month, youre five times more

likely to quit for good, so keep going! And with all that money youll be saving you can treat yourselves to a Christmas to remember - not long to go now!

Again, my thanks go to our contributors, whose efforts and dedication continue to ensure that we are your favourite freebie, and to you, our readers, for your words of encouragement and suggestions.

    Welcome to our November edition...

Front cover image by RKD Media

I do not know where this year has gone, but I cannot believe it is November already! The garden centres are

full of Christmas decorations and the supermarkets full of selection boxes and gift ideas. At this rate well soon be spotting the first Christmas television advert (or have I missed it?!) First, weve got bonfire night to contend with and as a pet owner it takes a bit of preparation. I still hope that one day they will ban

the general sale of fireworks and only organised fireworks displays would be allowed but I cant see that happening in the near future!

Inside this issue you will find a feature from the March Branch of the Royal Naval Association, a puzzle page and Trevor Bevis is back with some more March history, all of this as well as our regulars. Next month we will be bringing you a special Christmas edition of Discovering March but until then, I hope you have a great November and enjoy this months issue!

    | News from our M.P. Steve Barclay

Construction is already underway, supported by a fantastic fund-raising effort which has included a number of garden tea parties. During the summer, I spent some time identifying various bodies which allocate grants to sports clubs and community groups in our area. It has long been the case that Fenland often receives fewer grants than areas of South Cambridgeshire. I hope that, following my discussion with Michael Green at St Peters Church, we will be able to attract some additional grant funding which has not previously been identified.

Alongside securing grant funding, another way of helping local clubs and community groups is to reduce

their costs, one of which is often business rates. After working with Chatteris Football Club, we have identified that Community Amateur Sports Clubs qualify for an automatic reduction in 80% of their business rates. This is provided that the club constitution reflects a community status. I am now keen to work with any sports or community clubs in March, which are paying business rates, to see if they can also secure this reduction. If you are involved in a club which pays these rates, please contact my office on 01354 656635.

Sports facilities in March will be greatly enhanced when we finally get the much needed 4G artificial football pitch,

which will allow between 80-85 hours of play a week at Estover. These facilities are long overdue, as was highlighted in a Cambridgeshire FA report in 2012 which identified that the football facilities in March did not meet our needs. It was fantastic news last April when Cambridgeshire County Council confirmed that they would allow Estover playing field to be used as a sports centre, rather than for housing. I am informed by March Town Council that they hope to have the lease finalised later this month, and then they will host a public meeting for various sports clubs. Both Fenland District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council have each already committed 100,000 to this project.

The campaign to secure a late night train service from Stansted and Cambridge back to Fenland continues. This would make a huge difference in enabling the people of March to enjoy a night out in Cambridge rather than face a ridiculously early last train home. The invitation to tender for the new 2016 franchise has been published and I will be meeting representatives of the three short-listed rail bidders, over the coming weeks. I will continue to press the case for this much need rail improvement.

We Shall Remember Them...Over the last six years, the March Town Sunday Remembrance Parade has flourished. We now have around 500 people on parade and the March Policing Team think last year we had 6000 spectators. Cambridgeshire Police think this is now the biggest Remembrance Parade in the county, and something of which the town can feel proud. It has certainly become a major event to organise and only works because of the people who have supported this parade for years, those in the background who, without any recognition, make it happen. I could give you a long list of names. Compared to some of you, I am a relative newcomer as this is only my seventh parade as Parade Marshal. Id like to encourage every ex-service person to take part, rather than just standing in the crowd. You are welcome to join the ranks of the Royal British Legion. Im also keen to have all the veterans on parade, those that can no longer march the route are welcome to use wheelchairs. We are also keen to have the younger generation on parade from every organisation, those that just want to show their respect.

Remember, the future of the Town Parade will be theirs one day.

Major N Spencer MBE RE(Parade Marshal)

Did you know that March and District Museum is run by volunteers, and there are no paid staff? They

are looking for new volunteer Stewards. If you have an interest in local history and heritage maybe

you would like to do this? For more information call 01354 655300 or

    e-mail [email protected]

Could you be a volunteer steward?

Remembrance Parade - Sunday November 8th 2015The March Town Remembrance Parade will form up in Mill View car at 10am and all serving and ex-members of Her Majestys Armed Forces are welcome to take part. The Band of 1220 Squadron Air Training Corps will lead the parade. The Parade will step off at 10.30am and make its way to St Peters Church where a service of Remembrance will start at 10.55am. The Parade will re-form at 11.45am and return to the War Memorial where a wreath laying ceremony will take place.

Nene Parade GeeseI've had a few more letters and e-mails about the geese on Nene Parade which make interesting reading. In particular one e-mail from someone whose name I won't publicise claiming "The geese are a threat", "You should never have put them on the front cover of the magazine" and "They attack people and animals". Needless to say, I'm pretty sure they are on the 'against' camp! March residents - keep your comments coming!

Join Thorpe Hall Hospices Lights of Love carol concertCarols, fireworks and mulled wine will all feature at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospices traditional Lights of Love concert this Christmas. But the centrepiece will, as usual, be the giant Christmas tree decked out with handwritten messages of love, remembrance and inspiration. For thousands of people across the area, Lights of Love has become a key event in the festive calendar, offering the chance to take time out of the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparation to remember loved ones. This years carol concert will take place on Sunday, December 13 in the gardens of Thorpe Hall, in Longthorpe, Peterborough, with the mansion house as the backdrop. Doors will open at 5pm with the carol singing beginning at 5.30pm.BBC Radio Cambridgeshire presenter Jane Smith will compere the event with the City of Peterborough Concert Band providing musical accompaniment for the carol singing. Peterborough Gospel Choir will also take to the microphones as will young bagpipe player

Kathryn Johnston. The concert will be rounded off with a firework finale at 7pm.During the event, which is free to attend, Thorpe Halls Chapel will be open and the hospices books of remembrance will be available to view.Events fundraiser Jo Killick said: The Lights of Love event is a favourite with so many people who see it as the start of their festive celebrations. Its a lovely way to remember and celebrate the lives of special people with family and friends. Once again weve got some brilliant musicians to lead the singing the City of Peterborough Concert Band and bagpipe player Kathryn Johnston. But of course wed like all our guests to bring their best voices with them along with scarves, gloves and hats to keep warm.

The Lights of Love firework finale is the perfect ending to Thorpe Halls open air carol concert

March Supports Mental HealthYou may remember me mentioning an event at Grey Area Custom Tattoos a couple of months ago. Well, the fundraising day they held was a huge success, raising more than 1,600 for Mind, the mental health charity. People flocked to the shop throughout the day to get their semi-colon tattoos done to demonstrate that mental health issues have touched their lives in some way. I just wanted to say a big Well

done to March and that everyone involved should be very proud of themselves; making such a statement on a still taboo subject can only be commended.

Life doesnt have to come to an end.

Solar Panels time to fit them NOW

Thousands of homeowners across the country have installed solar panels over the last few years, saving money on their energy bills, protecting themselves from future price rises and, best of all, getting paid by the government for the electricity they generate.

This has made solar energy a sound investment and given homeowners a healthy return.

However, recent announcements made by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) strongly suggest that Feed-in Tariff (FiT) payments are to see drastic cuts in 2016.

In fact, the Feed-in Tariff review document, published on August 27th by the DECC, laid out plans to cut the Feed-in Tariff for small scale solar PV installations by as much as 87%.

Although the plans have not yet been confirmed, it is likely that all bands of the tariff will be affected quite severely. However, it is the installations in the 0-10kW band (almost all domestic installations) that will be hardest hit. In addition, a review of the default degression (applied to all tariffs) is expected to reduce the Feed-in Tariff to zero, for installations under 10kw, by 2019.

If you are considering installing a solar PV system, our advice is to ACT NOW, or risk a significant reduction in the pay back your system generates. All systems installed prior to the cut-off date of 31st December will receive the Feed-in Tariff currently shown on the Ofgem website, which is up to 12.47 pence per kWh. After January 1st 2016, it could be as low as 1.63 pence per kWh!

Princeenergy is a registered MCS installer, and can offer advice on all aspects of solar installations, from products and the suitability of your property to potential paybacks and government schemes.

As a trading division of Princebuild, a family-run business that has been trading for over forty years, you can be safe in the knowledge that Princeenergy will be here to provide support and servicing through the life of your solar panels and beyond.

Thinking of installing solar panels on your property? Take a look to find out why now could be financially the very best time to do it.

...we make saving money perfectly clear...

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Dont replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows Service With A Smile! Its been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that its all about service. Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But its not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didnt focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didnt expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole. Cloudy2Clear service Whittlesey, Eastrea & Coates areas and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. The truth is that its not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people Ive done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated. So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and hell be happy to help!

Are you buying a house jointly with someone else?

It is essential that you should give some thought to what will happen in the future, whether you are buying as a married couple or as partners.Whatever your own individual circumstances you will need to consider what may happen when your present relationship ends whether by death, separation, divorce or other cause.

If you are buying property jointly there are two types of ownership you should consider:-

    Beneficial Joint Tenants

Means that you will own the property in equal shares, and that on death of either of you, the property will become the sole property of the survivor. This is the usual basis for those buying as husband and wife and especially as first time marriages.

    Tenants in Common

If you buy on this basis it means that you own the property in specified shares (which may well still be equally). In the event of the death of a joint owner the share of that partner will not transfer to the other partner automatically and instead forms part of that partners estate and will be dealt with by his or her will. Married and unmarried couples should also think about how much of the

deposit each partner is putting up for the purchase and how best to preserve this if a break-up were to occur. The courts have considerable discretion when making decisions over houses within divorce proceedings and take into consideration child welfare. If you have any doubts as to your own position please ask our conveyancing team for advice. The right advice now can help to avoid problems in the future.

Unique & OriginalKate Francis has always been into painting with acrylics since she was at school. After finishing university, she started a career in horticulture and garden design. She was using her drawing and painting skills, whilst teaching horticulture in colleges. Inspired by nature and our beautiful world, she found painting on wood an escape, and feels closer to nature when using wood as her canvas. With this passion and love of painting, she started Kates Craft. Using only solid and sustainably sourced wood, mainly beech, birch and sycamore, she creates all her own designs and colour-schemes. All products are hand-painted in acrylic paint, using a brush or sponge, and then varnished.

As well as a huge range of gifts for sale on her website and through Etsy (which includes magnets, key-rings, tea-light holders, clocks and hanging hearts, to name but a few,) she also offers painting parties that are perfect for children. Offering fun, hands-on entertainment for birthdays and other occasions, Kate is able to offer a party to fit in with any theme or colour scheme. All items come plain, and are made from smooth, solid wood. Using washable, safe, acrylic paints, children (or adults) can paint what they like, or follow instruction. Once the activity has finished, Kate will collect all the painted items to be varnished, pack up and will leave everything clean and tidy for you to enjoy the rest of your day. Items will then be returned to the event organiser by person or post. Packages start at just 10 per person.

Kate also offers a bespoke painting service, as well as workshops, and can be found at various events throughout the year. To find out more, visit www.katescraft.com

At the monthly meeting, the President, Shipmate Bill Barry, made a very special presentation on behalf of the family of Shipmate Dick Housden. One of Dicks granddaughters had to travel in person to London collect a medal from the Russian Embassy on behalf of Dick. The President said this was his proudest moment in our Branch, to present to Dick this medal from a foreign government.

Dick told the meeting that during World War 2, there were only two ways of getting anything, including equipment, into Russia - through Prussia or by sea. The Arctic sea convoys were in 24 hours of daylight during the summer, whilst ice, 150cm thick, formed on the guns, and that it took a special kind of sailor to serve on those convoys. Due to his being colour blind, he worked down in the boiler room. Dick was in blissful ignorance of this medal being awarded and was quite dumbstruck, which is clearly not his natural demeanour!

On being presented with the Ushakov medal, Dick said hed waited seventy years for it, and he thanked Shipmate Secretary Ted Rasell who helped him to finally get the medal, by helping fill in forms. It was presented in a red velvet box, though all the writing on the card inside was in Russian and nobody was able to read what it actually said.

Dick then gave the meeting a very entertaining talk about his adventures from the day he joined the Royal Navy as an eighteen year old. He had never been to London before, and had to find his way to Paddington station from Liverpool Street to go to initial training at Malvern, Worcestershire,

    Royal Naval Association

where it all began. He saw a soldier and thought hed know the way and as it turned out, there were several of them who made their way together. He had been born and bred in Benwick and left school at fourteen. He wanted to join the Royal Navy and went to a Recruitment Office at the age of seventeen, rather than be called up and sent where he may not have wanted to go. Dick said hed always sailed on convoys and went to New York, sailing back on the old Queen Mary liner at one point. Although asked to stay on in the service, he decided to de-mob and was given clothes, gratuity money, chocolate and sweet rations. He returned to Peterborough station for Christmas 1946.

    Carol GowingPRO

As an aside, two days after the RNA Meeting, Dick received a second medal from the Russian Government, though this time it came through the post. It was a commemorative medal for the 70th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941 1945. This time, the writing was in both English and Russian, so he was able to read the Certificate and what was written on it. Well done and extremely well deserved, Dick!

    Health Matters

Meditation can be an extremely effective technique to reduce stress. It can lead to a state of thoughtless awareness, in which the excessive stress-producing activity of the mind is neutralised, without reducing alertness and effectiveness.

On Saturday November 28th , we are holding a course that will teach you how to heal your mind and life through the skilful combination of meditation and positive thinking in daily life. The course teacher is Buddhist nun, Gen Nyingpo who has twenty years of practising and teaching meditation, and is the resident teacher at the Drolma Centre, Peterborough. The event will consist of two sessions with a tea break in between. Each session will have guided meditations and a talk. No experience of meditation is needed to attend this course.

A fire broke out at about midnight on Saturday November 11th,1843, in the stackyard of Elwyn House, Market Hill, the home of Thomas Grounds. He was a fifty-year-old farmer and father of Ambrose Grounds, innkeeper of the Griffin Inn. A shoemaker working late was the first to see the fire and raised the alarm. When the police arrived they saw that a stack of oats harvested from six acres of land was alight. There were fears that the surrounding stacks and the range of thatched offices might catch fire. Up to two hundred people gathered to help, and followed the directions of Messrs Thomas Elliott, Charles Culledge Esq, Thomas Tusting and Captain Hampton, chief constable of the Isle of Ely constabulary. Marchs two fire engines arrived quickly and thanks to everyones efforts the fire was restricted to part of the oats stack. Although the

farmer was highly respected, there was little doubt that this was incendiarism. The perpetrator was not discovered. (1)

In November 1873, Mr Grounds complained to March Local Board that the fair continued beyond the agreed time. The Market Place was occupied on the Friday before the fair, and was not emptied until the Tuesday afterwards. This made the town very untidy for two Sundays, and Mr Phillips had allowed travelling vans to stand in front of the clock-house and remain there during all of Sunday, making a nuisance with their cooking etc. Mr Grounds asked the board to enforce any existing law. In Chatteris, the fair was cleared away before the Saturday morning while in Wisbech, stalls had to be cleared out. Present at the 22nd annual meeting in the Guildhall were Messrs Bates

(chairman), Laxon, Watson, Foster, Davies, Beedzler, Kirk, Golden, Grounds, T. Vawser and C. Vawser. The board decided that this came under the jurisdiction of the magistrates and agreed to bring it to their notice. (2)

March grocers and bakers announced in November 1915 that they had come to the unanimous decision to discontinue the custom of giving Christmas Boxes. Large towns throughout the country had already abolished the practice. Also the War had so inflated prices that it left little profit while working expenses had increased. The new budget made extra demands on income and there was a need for extreme cutbacks. (3)

Caring for the Aging PetJust like us, as they reach their senior years, they become more prone to common conditions and diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, liver disease and many forms of cancer. As owners, it is important that we look for the signs of aging so that we can ensure that our pets can enjoy their older years to their full potential.

Decreased MobilityMany owners put a lack of enthusiasm for walks or general inactivity down to their pet getting on a bit; however, there can be many reasons for this. Joint pain due to arthritis, damage or excess weight can see a noticeable reduction in a pets activity level or, surprisingly, it can also be a sign of senility.

Weight Gain As with humans, as animals get older, their nutritional needs change. The amount of calories an older pet requires reduces both once they are neutered, as well as when they get older. However, weight gain can also be a sign that something more serious is wrong or can aggravate other conditions such as joint problems and so it is well worth keeping in check.

Change to Body ConditionAn animals skin, teeth and oral health can deteriorate with age. These issues can benefit from the addition of certain supplements or treatment and make a huge difference to an animals quality of life after all, no one wants to walk around with toothache or itchy, sore skin.

So, if you notice any of the above signs in your senior pet/s, book an appointment at your local vets as we have the knowledge and tools to identify problems and discuss a suitable treatment plan if necessary. This could be as simple as a change to your pets diet and/or exercise routine, but could take years off your pets behaviour.

Cats and dogs age much quicker than humans; for example, a seven year old West Highland Terrier is actually in its 40s in dog years.

    | History by Trevor Bevis

In accordance with a warning issued by Col. Halifax, Commander of Colchester Garrison, a troop of sixty horses commanded by Col. John Hobart of Outwell, was stationed at March and strategically placed in the centre of the Fens, to assert military influence in the Isle of Ely, and, if necessary, put down any attempt by Royalist sympathisers to open the Isle to the Kings army. The March troop regularly displayed the Parliamentary flag when it patrolled the area, and the base and men were maintained by the Isles population, at a cost of 70 a week.

Nowadays, the long vanished military base is commemorated in local names Battery Hills and Cavalry Barn, a modern housing estate close to the site. It is not verified that the great Fenman, Oliver Cromwell, visited March, but he may have done so, on his way to contact the siege of Kings Lynn. During the Civil War, new roads were built in the central Fens, with March at the strategic centre. Iretons Way, from Sutton-in-the-Isle to Chatteris, a long and straight military road, gave the March cavalry rapid access to Ely and, similarly, the road from March (Westry) gave access to Whittlesey and Peterborough. The March troop could approach Wisbech where several eminent royalist sympathisers lived. It appears that the March cavalry base was built around a much older building, and the writer has reason to believe it was the original Eastwood Manor.

During the summer of 1849, a March man, Captain Hamilton, excavated the military base. He discovered the remains of earthworks and stone foundations with hills at the corners, and timber palisades and a moat. The captain dug up clay pipes probably used by troopers and the bones of horses. At no other place in the former Isle of Ely am I aware of a similar Civil War fortification, but one existed near Earith alongside the Old West River.

Call the CavalryThree hundred and fifty years ago, the sconce at March, and rectangular field south of Eastwood Avenue, formed the site of a Parliamentary cavalry base.

At a particularly dangerous time to the Fens and East Anglia, a royal army approached Crowland with the intention of taking Wisbech and March. All known Royalists at Wisbech were incarcerated in St Peters church until the danger had passed. It is known that Col. Hobart was seen at Wisbech and probably the towns Royalists were rounded up by March troopers and locked inside the church. They toasted the Kings health holding goblets above the font, a toast to the King over the water, the future Charles II.

The centre field is the site of the March cavalry base
