After my lovely long break in Devon it’s great to be back in the office – it’s always busy here

at Discovering Magazines HQ, and this month is no exception! Not only do we have a great competition to win a family

ticket to Sacrewell Farm, but to celebrate the return of “The Great British Bake Off”, we are inviting budding chefs to send us their recipes. Our favourites will be published in forthcoming issues of Discovering March, enter the competition on our recipe page and you could win tea for two at Georges Bar and Restaurant.

Welcome to our (topsy turvy) September edition...

The school holidays are nearly over – in fact, they will be over for some of you by the time you read this.

Therefore, peace and normality can be restored, and for many, the juggling of work and childcare will finally come to an end – until half term anyway!

Last month’s cover photo caused quite a stir amongst the cricket fraternity, so, I’m hoping the choice this issue

isn’t quite so controversial. Geese, they shouldn’t be a problem…or are they? See our “Community Matters” pages to learn more…

I’m looking for clubs to interview for our future “Club Spotlight” features. If you are a member of a club and feel they deserve a mention, please let me know. You can e-mail me with your suggestions on this, or anything else Discovering March related, at [email protected]

Gin Soaked Blackberry Bakewell

1. Soften the fruit in a pan on a low heat. 2. Add the jam sugar and bring to the boil. Once bubbling, turn the heat back down to a low heat. Simmer for 10-15 minutes. 3. Place a tea plate in the freezer to chill. To test if the jam has set, place a drop of jam on the chilled plate and push - the jam will ripple when it has set. 4. The jam can be made in advance and jarred to be used when needed. Alternatively, leave to cool thoroughly.

For the jam: u 125g blackberries (soaked in 4tbsp of gin for at least 24 hours)u 125g jam sugaru knob of butter

1. Grease a 23cm loose bottom fluted tart tin and set to one side. Preheat the oven to gas mark 4. 2. Add the butter, flour, icing sugar and egg yolk to a bowl. Combine ingredients with your fingers until they start coming together. Add the iced water, a tablespoon at a time, to combine the final ingredients into a ball. 3. Tip the ball onto a clean floured surface and knead until you have a smooth ball. Return the ball to the bowl, cover with clingfilm and chill for 20 minutes.4. Take the pastry from the fridge and roll on a floured surface to the thickness of a 50p piece. 5. Use this to line the tin, pushing the pastry into the corners of the tin. Cut the excess off from around the tin and place this to one side while you prepare the frangipane.

For the pastry: u 100g cold butteru 175g plain flouru 1 ½ tbsp icing sugaru 1 large egg yolku 1-2 tbsp iced water

1. Cream the butter and sugar together, then slowly add the beaten eggs, a bit at a time beating the mixture as you go. 2. Combine the flour and ground almonds in a bowl and add the almond and vanilla extract to this. Add this to the butter, sugar and egg mixture slowly, stirring it in as you go, until all of the ingredients are combined.3. Set this to one side. Make sure the jam is cold before spreading approximately 4tbsps over the base of the pastry case; spread the frangipane mixture on top of the jam, spreading this into the corners. 4. Use the remaining pastry to create a lattice on top of the pie. Roll it flat and cut it into thin strips approximately 25cm in length. You will need around 12 of these about 1cm wide. Brush the pastry with some milk.5. Bake in an oven preheated to gas mark 4 for approximately 50 minutes. To test, press a cocktail stick into the top of the pie. If the cocktail stick comes out clean, it is done. The pastry should be golden brown.

| A Day out at. . .

Where is it?Just off the A1/A47 Junction at Wansford, near Peterborough. If you have a sat nav, the postcode is PE8 6HJ.

Who is it suitable for?Everyone, but in particular families with primary school age children. It’s dog friendly too, so the family pet doesn’t need to miss out!

How much does it cost?Child tickets cost £5.50, adults £7.50 or a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) £23. Annual membership options are available too. Tractor rides are charged separately at £1.50 per person, and animal food is available too at 50p per pot. To get the most out of your visit to Sacrewell, I would recommend camping! The fees for this depend on the season and can include entry to Sacrewell too. A night camping in September would cost a family of four just £32 and is definitely worth a try – the camping facilities are great too.

Why choose Sacrewell Farm?It offers something for the whole family, from feeding the goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs to learning about the original mill and seeing how it works. There is a wildlife trail that you can follow, the tractor ride to go on, a play park, a soft play barn, horses and donkeys to visit and even a cow to milk – although, thankfully, not a real one! There is often a number of other activities going on around the farm and when we were there we could place bets on the “Lamb National” – no prizes for guessing what that was! We could also have a go at pond dipping, take part

in parachute games and a duck race. It really is a full day of entertainment. The café is well worth a visit because Sacrewell is all about local produce, and the meals offered in the café demonstrate this. Plenty of choice, hot and cold food and drinks, highchairs, and even an adults-only comfy seat area - we were very impressed by the set up and we thought our meals were great value, as well as tasty! There are plenty of souvenirs available in the “Three Little Ducks” gift shop, as well as a variety of toys and games. Local produce from suppliers such as Grasmere Farm is also available so the adults can treat themselves too. The shop also stocks a small variety of camping essentials, so don’t worry if you have forgotten to bring your toothbrush! We were really pleased that we camped at Sacrewell the night before our visit; the children loved the experience and when they discovered the play park was open especially for the campers, they were even more excited. We just wish that we’d looked at the website properly before we set off – we missed that you can order a full English breakfast for the following morning when you check in!

How can I find out more? The address is Sacrewell Farm, Thornhaugh, Peterborough. PE8 6HJ. Telephone 01780 782254, email [email protected], or visit, www.sacrewell.org.uk

Tested by Becky Kane and Gareth Daines with Millie and Charlie.

With the school holidays finally coming to an end (phew!) why not have a last family day out at Sacrewell Farm? Don’t worry if you can’t fit another trip in before the holidays are over though; Sacrewell is open all year round. They only close for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day!

Nene Parade Geese - LOVE THEM OR HATE THEM?

I have been following various Facebook threads about the geese living on the river, near Nene Parade, with interest, and have had to stop myself joining in on the conversations (and insult throwing), on numerous occasions. I’m a fan of all animals myself, and can completely understand why people were up in arms, when one of the geese was injured, a few weeks ago. Initial reports said that it had been shot, with others saying a dog had attacked it. It seems a dog did attack it, but in self-defence. Was it the dog’s fault, the dog owner’s fault, the goose’s or was it even the fault of those that are feeding the geese? My own opinion is that these things happen. It’s not nice and in many respects nature can be pretty evil sometimes, but instead of apportioning blame, let’s just hope that the goose recovers – surely that’s what really matters! I was also saddened to see that, of the nine eggs laid by one of the geese, only six hatched, and at the time of writing this, only one gosling has survived. Again, there has been a huge Facebook debate on this and it seems the Nene Parade geese really are ‘Marmite’ with March residents – are you in the “nuisance” camp, or the “town mascot” camp?

At the time of going to press, the RSPCA have confirmed that the goose attacked by the dog last month is recovering well and they are pleased with its progress.

Get in touch...I’d love to hear your views, and I’m sure those readers that haven’t had the ‘entertainment’ of reading the Facebook comments, would love to have their say too. E-mail your comments to [email protected]

The “Ouse Washes Experience” with Ely Rotary Club is a fundraising event being held on September 20th and is in its second year. It consists of three options; a 10k walk from Welney village to Welches Dam, a timed run on the same course, and lastly a 35k or 55k cycle ride. Entry is free, and the route is fully marshalled. The purpose of the event is primarily for enjoyment but participants are encouraged to raise sponsorship money in aid of a charity of their choice. For details visit www.walk-run-cycle.org.uk

Sports Festival Success

The Three Day Sports Festival was held at March Town Cricket Club, at the end of July. It was started by Bill Adamson eleven years ago, and this year was the most successful and well supported in the festival’s history, with 120 local girls and boys, aged between six and twelve years old attending. Children were given the opportunity to learn and practise numerous sporting skills by the club coaches, Bill Adamson, Ash Vodnala, Toby Nulty and Stuart Mills. Great support was given by the coaches from March Boxing Club, March Athletic Club, March Soccer School and Peterborough Hockey Club.

March Town Cricket Club Chairman, Les Mills, stated, “I would like to thank all the coaches, assistant coaches, catering staff and the numerous helpers and volunteers for all their hard work, organisation skills and enthusiasm which ensured the Three Day Festival was the most successful we have run. It was a great team effort. Special thanks to all our sponsors, namely the Big Lottery, Fenland Youth District Council and Fenmarc.”

| Consumer Advice

Scam Awareness Month ran throughout July 2015, with the intention of assuring consumers are informed and are ready to talk about their own experiences to help prevent others. Sporting the headline “Don’t be rushed, Don’t be hushed”, the campaign is supported nationally by Trading Standards and other organisations. Each year millions of people in the UK are victims of scammers. Estimates put the figure lost to scammers by as much as £5billion. The truth is – with reporting levels as low as 5% for some types of scams – the real impact cannot be quantified. Scams are crimes that affect many different groups of people with distressing, and sometimes disastrous consequences. Many go unreported either because the consumer does not spot something amiss or because people who become victims of scams feel a sense of shame. To understand and prevent such crimes, it is essential that consumers get the information they need to spot scams in the first place; report them when they are targeted and get the advice they need to help protect them in future.KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER & SHARE• If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.• It you haven’t bought a ticket – you can’t win it.• You shouldn’t have to pay anything to get a prize.• If in doubt, don’t reply. Bin it, delete it or hang up.• Persuasive sales patter? Just say: “No thank you”.• Contacted out of the blue – be suspicious.• Take your time – resist pressure to make a decision straight away.• Never send money to someone you don’t know.• Walk away from job ads that ask for money in advance.• Your bank will never attend your home to collect cash, your PIN, payment card or chequebook if you are a victim of fraud.• Your bank will never phone you to ask for your PIN number.• Genuine computer firms do not make unsolicited calls to help you fix your computer.

Don’t suffer in silence – speak out about scams and help others to not fall victim to the scammers. For further details on information shared within the campaign, go to:www.citizensadvice.org.uk/Global/CitizensAdvice/campaigns/scams/sam15-briefing.pdf

J ames Ritchie was born in Elm and served an apprenticeship in Upwell, before finding employment in March. In 1845, before the railway came to March, he established his own business as a blacksmith, and probably as a wheelwright. He would walk to Peterborough, to order timber to use in his business. The site which he used was later occupied by R. Addison & H. Legge, in the vicinity of The Wheel pub. He married local girl Mary Ann and they had eleven children. In 1862, he acquired the business of Mr H. Girling, a coach builder in Station Road. Ritchie was a very active and industrious man, working up to eighteen hours a day. He built March’s first lightweight, horse-drawn cart. He relaxed by reading and was a knowledgeable man. Trading as James Ritchie and Sons, he continued his work until mid-1891, transferring the business to his sons, James and Frederic Tom [known just as Tom] in January, 1892.

Towards the end of his life, he revisited Elm and climbed the church tower, something he had done seventy years previously. He died on 31st July, 1892 at the age of seventy-nine. The brothers, James and Tom, continued the business. With the turn of the century, road traffic changed and, no doubt, Ritchie’s was affected. They then diversified into undertaking. When the boys’ mother died in 1911, they performed the undertaking. They had the skills to make coffins and used their own employees to provide pall bearers. They advertised that they were now

in the motor car age with an illustration of a car on their bill head, [illustration 1912]. Was this an indication they were selling cars, providing service facilities, or they were able to provide custom-made bodies?

Tom succumbed to pneumonia in 1920. James, in failing health, decided to close the business and sell the premises in 1925. The sale date

was 17th June. Before the auction started, the auctioneer shocked attendees by stating James had died just a few hours earlier. The lots included the workshop, showrooms and the building site. The bidding failed to meet the reserve; the highest bid being £1,450. The premises were later bought privately by Mr J. B. Levett who, in August, submitted plans to the council for seven shops. They were operated for many years by the

Peterborough and District Co–op Society, and for years were known as “Ritchie’s Corner” and now known as “Co-op Corner”. When Mr Ritchie Snr. died, his obituary speculated his activities gave rise to the names of The Wheel and The Coachmakers pubs. The Ritchies were a respected family and prominent members of St. John’s Church. Tom had been church warden and when Frederick, son of James, retired from the organist’s position, after more than fifty years, he donated a full-length red carpet to the church.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Whittlesey, Eastrea & Coates areas and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Inheritance Tax (IHT):NRB frozen until 2020/21 at £325,000 per person (X 2 = £650,000) now in 7th year will be 11 years. There is the introduction of an additional property allowance. This will be worth £100,000 in 2017-18, £125,000 in 2018-19, £150,000 in 2019-20, and £175,000 in 2020-21. This will allow individuals to pass on assets worth up to £500,000, including a family home, without paying any IHT at all. For married couples and civil partners, the total is £1m. This additional allowance will be gradually with-drawn for estates worth more than £2m. If you need to know the impact on Long Term Care and estate planning investments, the best idea is to take advice from an Independent Finan-cial Adviser.

Dividend Income:The headline was ‘No tax on first £5,000 of divi-dend income.’ Hardly any basic rate tax payers used to pay tax on dividends anyway, but after the first £5,000, tax will be levied at 7.5% - so that is an increase. Higher rate tax payers will pay 32.5% after the first £5,000, and additional rate tax payers 38.1%. These rates do not apply to ISA and pen-sion funds – if you are drawing significant amounts of dividend or any other income outside of ISA or pension – this is an opportunity to review your ar-rangements.

Pensions:Lifetime allowance has reduced from £1.8m in 2010 to £1m now. Ongoing the limit will be linked to CPI. This may not affect the majority of workers, but for those that it does – advice from a qualified Independent Financial Adviser will be worthwhile. Annual Allowance has also been reduced; for many the maximum per year is limited to £40,000, but there are several situations where this may be reduced to £10,000. Again qualified advice could provide valuable tax advantages.

If you want to explore how this feeds in to your financial planning, please book a free initial consul-tation.

Helping Your Pet to Cope with Change

What is Adaptive Behaviour?

Adaptive behaviour is behaviour which is uncharacteristic for your pet and that, when coupled with a change in routine or circumstance, tells us that they are struggling to cope with the change.

For example, a dog may soil inside the house that you have just moved into. Indoor toileting could indicate a lack of training or a medical problem, but, if they are doing it in a house that you have just moved into, they may actually be trying to tell you that they aren’t coping very well with the change.

Other changes can be much more subtle, and can often be mis-attributed to other scenarios such as; lying in odd places, being distant from other members of the household, or cats may spend an extended period away from home.

Below are some of the signs to look out for which could indicate that your pet is struggling to cope:- Changes in resting or sleeping places or patterns- Actively hiding- Excessive licking or vocalisation- Increased or decreased social interaction- House soiling- Change in demeanour or posture- Lack of interest in play

What to do if Your Pet Exhibits this Behaviour

Take them to see your vet. They will ask you some questions about your pet, perform a physical examination, and possibly take blood and urine samples - to rule out any medical causes for the behaviour you describe.

They will then be able to advise you on management options, based on their findings. If no physical cause is found, they can then concentrate on helping your pet cope with their circumstances.

Just like people, pets have to adjust to changes in family life such as; moving house, the arrival or departure of a member of the family (two- or four-legged), people com-ing to stay for the holidays, or going into kennels/catteries while their owners are on holiday. Just like us, pets cope in different ways. Some pets, however, don’t cope with these changes well, and exhibit what is called, adaptive behaviour.

With help from the owners of the kennels that the council used, she formed the Ravenswood Pet Rescue, ensuring that home-checks were made before re-homing, and that all animals were vet-checked, neutered and microchipped. After a period of re-homing only local dogs, she got involved with rescuing needy dogs from all over the country and built relationships with several ‘stray kennels’, taking in their dogs and expanding the rescue operation.

As the Rescue grew, and still with some empty kennels, she began to look further afield - and after seeing the condition of some of the stray dogs overseas, particularly in Romania where strays are regularly tortured and killed, she decided to give them the chance of a happy and fulfilling life. Caroline made contact with one of the kennels in Romania, and now brings a number of dogs over to the UK, each month.

Ravenswood Pet Rescue Over 2,000 Dogs and Still Rescuing!

The Rescue’s relationship with the local vets has also grown, and they

now also take in dogs whose owners cannot afford to pay the veterinary

bills and whose only option was to put them to sleep. Ravenswood cover all the vet’s expenses, ensuring the animals are fully fit and well, before re-homing. They

also take in pets when owners’ circumstances change and they

can no longer look after their pet.

Over the years, Ravenswood has had several litters of puppies born to strays, the largest of which was in 2013. A dog called Paige produced a litter of twelve puppies, all of whom had to be hand-reared, a time consuming and often heart-breaking task.

In its short time running, Ravenswood Pet Rescue has re-homed over two thousand dogs and now has a network of volunteers, both locally and across the country. In February 2015, it opened its first pre-loved shop in Wisbech, selling a range of donated goods, from clothes, DVDs and books, right through to car wheels, TVs and once, even a kitchen sink!

Ravenswood Pet Rescue was formed seven years ago, when the Rescue’s founder, Caroline Trigg, moved to the area and discovered that dogs from the local pound, were being re-homed without the

relevant support and back-up.

Ravenswood Pet Rescue are holding a Family Fun Day on Saturday 5th September 2015. Come along and join the fun at Estover Field, March. PE15 8SF from 8am - 5 pm. ReflexologyReflexology is a holistic therapy, suitable for all ages. Many people find that it can bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.

By working on specific reflex points on the feet, circulation and lymph flow are improved. It cleanses the body of impurities and revitalises energy, which will encourage the body to restore its own healthy balance. If you think you could benefit from having a reflexology session, call us for more information.

Whether you suffer from insomnia, migraines, digestive problems or fatigue, the root of many health problems can be linked to stress. Stress can be caused by our own hectic lifestyle with its emotional, physical or environmental factors. It is almost completely unavoidable and can be damaging to the body and mind. Under the influence of prolonged stress, the body is less capable of fighting illness. Reflexology counteracts the effects of stress by promoting relaxation and bringing balance to the body. During a treatment, the nerve endings in the feet are stimulated. This is to release the energy, relax the muscles and to restore physical harmony. All the body’s systems need good circulation in order to function well, and reflexology keeps the body’s circulation flowing smoothly which, in turn, rejuvenates tired tissue.

THE GREATER PETERBOROUGH UNIVERSITY TECHNICAL COLLEGE (GPUTC)

So what’s that all about then? – Let the Principal, Dr. Alan McMurdo, explain.

I get asked lots of questions about our brand new school, the GPUTC, as I meet potential

students, their parents and employers in Greater Peterborough.

Our local UTC is part of a growing number of schools up and down the country – there are about forty of them so far – aiming to provide something different from the standard form of

schooling, for youngsters, aged from fourteen to nineteen.

‘SO WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT A UTC?’ is one key question. One way I answer

is to say it’s all about the mix, providing a backbone of academic qualifications, up to GCSE and beyond, plus a set of technical

qualifications as well.

Another thing I stress is the focus. All UTCs have specialisms, and we are no exception.

We are specializing in engineering, particularly in automation systems and control, and we are

specializing in the built environment.

Another is the partnership. It works like this: the local industry and local businesses, as well as

the major sponsors, shape the curriculum. They not only shape the specialisms but

develop employer projects and experience placements; the idea that colleagues from

industry can come into the technical college and vice

versa, all that meshing and synergy is here and it’s driven essentially by industrial sponsors. The

GPUTC and its sponsors take this one step further, as we

guarantee all our graduates

with job interviews, through our employer sponsors.

Finally, I talk about meeting a need. In this country, we dismantled our technical education

over the years, and now we are trying to rebuild it. Its time has come, it’s back on the agenda

and we are finding a lot of youngsters are really excited that they can learn with their head and

their hands, in a different way from the traditional curriculum in schools.

We will be providing a unique opportunity for a state-of-the-art technical education. What we

are about is providing a one-off advantage, an employability advantage to people who join us.

We are hoping they will stay with us for four years from Year 10 all the way through; they

may join us in the Sixth Form and just stay for two years, but the programmes are designed

to be progressive. They will take young people into employment, on to apprenticeship routes, or into higher education, and we hope that in ten years’ time, our alumni will look back on

their experience with us as a unique, fulfilling opportunity they had been given.

Come and join the GPUTC, either for a Year 10 or a Year

12 entry in 2016. It is the choice for engineers,

builders, designer and architects of the future.

For full details, contact us at http://gputc.com/.

The Old Nene, through the centre of March, has been fishing well, with plenty of perch and rudd being caught by youngsters, taking advantage of the warm weather in the evenings; but all through March, the tench and skimmers are also feeding well.

In the recent March and District club match, fished on the bypass section, I needed 17lb to take top spot, which was made up of three ( tench, rudd, perch), and two eels. Carol Davis was a close second with 15lb. Also at Benwick, on the Old Nene, the fish have been feeding. Over at Chatteris on the Forty Foot Drain, the Chatteris Club have had plenty of bites in their club matches, but the fish are very small, and the big fish here are just not feeding in the daytime.

Steve Newell won the last match on the Forty Foot with eighty-five fish for 4lb. Elsewhere on the river, the Main Drain at Tydd Gote has started to fish a little better. Jon Young needed 13lb to win the latest open match here, and Sammy McSpadden also need 13lb to win the latest round of the ‘King of the Fens’, fished on the Middle Level.

As for the lakes, they are fishing well. The Townsend Angling Club had a bus trip to Coleman’s Cottage and the carp were waiting for them, with the top five anglers all netting over 100lb. Out in front, with 205lb, was Alan Owen, closely followed by Shaun Stracan on 197lb. The Townsend Club also fished a match at Float Fish Farm near Peterborough. This is the first time the club has fished here and, on the whole, they were very impressed. They fished the Two Island Lake, and Dave Garford took top spot with 80lb, followed by Trevor Watson with 77lb, over at Pidley. Magpie Lake is fishing well and Tom Edwards needed just over 200lb for top spot, with sixth place having 133lb.

Ramsey angler, Josh Pace, who qualified for the Fish ‘O’ Mania final and a chance of the £30,000 first prize - finished in fifth place after leading at the halfway stage. Overall winner was Jamie Hughes and this is the second time he has won this event. March angler, Abbie Kendall finished third in the Ladies Match.

| Legal corner by Barbara Judkins

Neighbours and NuisanceW ith our growing need to live in

close proximity to our neighbours, there is an increased likelihood that an activity taking place on our neighbour’s land will have adverse consequences for us. Some of these activities may amount in law to acts of private nuisance and give rise to a dispute with legal consequences. Activities that can become a nuisance to the neighbouring land include noise, smells, leaking oil/ water or even trees. They must cause substantial damage or interference with the neighbour’s enjoyment of his or her land to constitute acts of private nuisance. They can arise from a single incident or a state of affairs, e.g. persistent dog barking or a prolonged renovation of a house that, in a particular reported case, took over four years. A claim in nuisance is only going to be successful if it can be proven the one neighbour should have anticipated that their activity would cause loss of amenity and/or physical damage to a neighbouring property. These principles can apply to tree roots and branches. Tree roots can cause damage to underground structures by breaking into drains and pushing through foundations and can cause indirect damage by affecting the water content

of soil, particularly clay soil. If tree roots encroach across a boundary onto neighbouring land, settlement or subsidence can occur that may involve significant expenditure arising from the need to underpin a property affected by subsidence. Case law demonstrates a tree owner must take all reasonable steps to prevent or minimise the risk of damage to his neighbour’s property. In a 2013 case taken against the London Borough of Bexley, the Court decided the Council should have taken steps once it was aware of the problem although exactly what steps should have been taken is a debatable matter. For example, regular pruning can sometimes stimulate a tree’s growth. Overhanging branches can lead to claims by the owner of a neighbouring property if branches cause physical damage to structures or they fall off and that way cause damage. They may also be a trespass, interfere with a neighbour’s right of light and give rise to health and safety issues. If a dispute arises, the neighbour alleging nuisance may request an Injunction to bring the nuisance to an end or, in many cases, compensation to reimburse the expense of putting right the damage e.g. underpinning in the event of foundations breached by tree roots. If the nuisance has come to an end, the compensation will relate to the period when it was continuing. Nuisance and particularly where it relates to trees is a difficult area of law. Clearly in deciding the best way forward, good legal advice will assist.

eptember takes its name from ‘septem’, seven in Latin, as the seventh month when the Roman year began, in March. It marks the return to work after the harvest holidays, harvest festivals, the beginning of autumn, and Michaelmas - St Michael’s Day on September 29th. The ceremony of laying the key stone of March’s new bridge over the River Nene, was performed by Charles Culledge on Wednesday September 18th 1850. To an audience of over 1000 people, he praised the great improvements which had taken place in March, and expressed his great pleasure in being chosen to perform this task and being honoured by such a large, and highly respectable, gathering. He hoped that they might long and happily enjoy the convenience brought by the bridge. Afterwards, Rev A. Peyton led the procession to the Griffin Inn for a sumptuous dinner. A public tea was held in the densely crowded Mechanics’ Institute in Broad Street, followed by speeches. A resolution was passed and sent to Mr Culledge in the Griffin, expressing the public’s debt and gratitude, for his zeal and generosity in promoting the erection of the bridge, and its approaches.(1)

September 1872: “We have been favoured with a sight of a drawing of the new Rectory House of St John’s, to be built in the close, adjoining the church. It is a very handsome structure, in character with the church, both in architecture and materials, and will be a great ornament

to that part of the parish. It is expected to be completed in about twelve months, when the new rector, the Rev. Edward Wells, will, it is hoped, be able to come into residence.”(2)

Music at Georges

IRONFIST: Returning to March on 5th September, this glam rock band on their alleged ‘world tour’ combine slapstick humour with 80’s long hair, leggings and see-through shirts. This sets the scene for a great evening of fun and music, starting when their chauffeur driven limousine, brings them to the doors of Georges.

Blackjack: 19th September, a locally formed band they have already played at Georges earlier in the season and return again with another 20 gigs under their belt. A great sound is expected and the audience will witness a truly talented, up and coming band, who will be shaking the music scene in the near future.

Bondy: 25th September. Our longest serving, singer songwriter who lives and was brought up, right here in March. Much of his own music is inspired from his love of the fens, Bondy invites friends of his beloved March to join him, on his annual visit to Georges and to celebrate the landlord’s birthday!

Which boundary do I own?

This is probably the most asked question from a purchaser.

There is a common belief that if the post and rails are on your side of a boundary, then that boundary is yours to maintain. Alternatively, that the boundary on the right hand side of the property when looking straight at the property from the road, belongs to your property.

Unfortunately, there is no legal foundation in these statements.

It is your title deeds which should state which boundary is your responsibility to maintain, quite often distinguished by an inward “T” mark. However, it is not unusual, especially with older properties, that there is nothing on the deeds or at the land registry to indicate which boundary is yours to maintain. In this instance, it is best to ask either the seller or the adjoining owners

which boundaries they consider to be their and your responsibility. You ideally do not want to get into a boundary dispute with your new neighbours.

For knowledgeable legal help on all aspects of property transactions please feel free to contact us on the numbers below.

This Month at the CinemaIt’s the after-summer lull – the kids are back at school, summer holidays are over and the days are getting shorter again, as we wind towards autumn.

But don’t despair! September has some quality films to cheer you up, and these are pulling away from the Hollywood glitz of the August line-up. “Legend”, the story of the Kray twins, is causing a lot of excitement in the movie world. Tom Hardy takes the feature roles of both Reggie and Ronnie Kray, in a performance that will surely have him tipped for some awards. Whilst this gangster movie looks to be hard-hitting, it is also peppered with tongue-in-cheek humour. This is released on September 11th. For something a bit more family-oriented, “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”, released on September 4th, looks set to hit all the right notes with teenage audiences. It tells the story of two friends who make a film about their neighbour with leukaemia. One to grab the tissues for! Meryl Streep is an aging rocker in “Ricki and the Flash”, struggling to reconnect with her family after years on the road. This is released on September 4th. Another September 4th release is “No Escape”, starring Pierce Brosnan. A family move overseas and find themselves in the middle of a civil war, with rebels targeting foreigners.

We also have the second film in the Maze Runner series,” Scorch Trials” released on September 10th. The runners have escaped the maze, but that was only the beginning. They learn more about WCKD as they face the Scorch.

If you are a fan of travel writer Bill Bryson, don’t miss the movie adaptation of his book, “A Walk in the Woods”, coming out on September 18th. Starring the great Robert Redford as Bill Bryson, this film follows Bill as he returns to the USA, and decides to hike the 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail. His plans go somewhat awry when his former friend insists on joining him. For sci-fi fans, don’t miss “The Martian” released on September 30th. Matt Damon is an astronaut presumed dead, after a storm hits his mission to Mars. However, he is very much alive, and stranded alone on a hostile planet. He must rely on his wits to stay alive and find a way to contact Earth.

DIRECTORY BUSINESS FEATURE OF THE MONTH...going digital - Using your camera to its full potential

You have a new camera – all the dials, buttons and numbers can look a little bewildering, so the easiest option is to switch your camera to ‘Auto’. Chance dictates that some photos will look better than others; perhaps that portrait looks no better than one taken on your phone or that action shot of your dog is out of focus?

Visit our Facebook page for students’ work: facebook.com/GoingDigitalEastOfEngland

Here’s a tip - professionals shoot portraits in what is called ‘Aperture Priority’, but you don’t have to be a professional to use it. Turn the dial to A (for ‘Aperture Priority’), the result - a beautifully sharp portrait with a blurred background.

At “Going Digital”, we offer a comprehensive range of courses. We hold our photographic days in iconic properties, such as Burghley House and Norwich Cathedral.

We start by getting you off the ‘Auto’ setting, and show you how to use your camera creatively. We will de-mystify ISO, shutter speed and f-stop, so that you become confident, not only with the terminology but also with how everything works.

On our level two course, we learn to capture movement for action photography. After that, you are ready for our specialist courses.

New courses and venues are being added regularly, so check our website, www.goingdigital.co.uk to keep up to date.

Maxey Grounds & Co - a professional approach to property

With origins dating back to 1792, Estate Agents Maxey Grounds & Co are a traditional fi rm of chartered surveyors, auctioneers, valuers, land and estate agents. With offi ces in March, Wisbech and Chatteris, they have Fenland covered and needless to say, they know their stuff when it comes to property as well as offering a professional service to all clients.

When you decide to move house and need to sell, your chosen estate agent needs to work hard for you. Maxey Grounds & Co offer quality sales brochures, and advertise extensively locally and on the internet. Their experienced staff offer excellent advice and will help you to sell your home.

There are numerous television programmes that offer advice on increasing the value of your home and making it more saleable. We spoke to the experts from Maxey Grounds & Co to see what advice they would give:

Timing - If you have the freedom of choosing when to sell your house, you can give your property the best chance, by choosing to sell when demand is at its highest. These periods usually occur in the spring, early summer and autumn; avoiding mid-summer and the winter festive period is often the way to go. However, with demand for properties for sale at its highest in several years and stock levels at their lowest, prices have risen across the board, and now could not be a better time to be considering a move.

Kerb Appeal – First impressions count so, if necessary, clear pathways, tidy the garden and parking areas, paint fences and ensure that the house number and name can be seen. Make sure that, when your prospective buyers do their drive by, they don’t do just that.

Maintenance and Repairs – Get those little jobs done; viewers will notice if the guttering needs cleaning out, dripping taps, dirty grout or if light bulbs need replacing. It doesn’t have to cost a lot. Take these small things out of the equation and your potential buyer leaves with the impression of a well-loved and maintained home, which is just the way you want it!

De-clutter – We all have clutter, but imagine how much cleaner, tidier and bigger your home would look if you didn’t? Be ruthless and go as far as to get into the garage, loft, shed, under the stairs, kitchen cupboards – buyers will snoop, it’s in our nature!

Choose a great agent - Your agent’s knowledge of the market, the area and meeting your expectations will help achieve an early sale, and help you to purchase, with the least amount of worry and stress to yourself and the rest of your family.
