March his past month has certainly demonstrated the great variations in our weather. At start of the year we were threatened with blizzards and gale force winds, most of which, as usual, failed to materialise. Although we did get some snow which was nice, particularly as we’d chosen a snowy picture as our cover image for February. However, like always it was fleeting and the snow soon melted and was replaced with rain and chilling winds, but again that didn’t last for too long and as I write this the weather is so good it could quite easily pass for a summer’s day. Speaking of summer, although it’s at the back of all our minds it technically starts on the last Sunday of the month, as the clocks go forward and an hours sleep is lost. Not to mention all the time that will taken up by engaging in conversations as to the merits of putting the clocks forwards and backwards. While we’ll all no doubt be hoping for a pleasant summer, much like the last years, I will also be hoping, as a hay fever sufferer, that the allergy season is a short one. Apparently it’s already started and there are a record number of people in the UK, approximately 12 million, who’ll be affected. What I really don’t understand is that before I moved to March I had never suffered with hay fever before. Maybe having grown up in a more built up part of the country my nostrils are more used to pollution than fresh air, but I’m fast approaching five years in March so hopefully this is the year they finally acclimatise. In the magazine this month you can read about the story behind the competition to find a flag for Cambridgeshire. It seemed strange to me when I first heard that, prior to the competition; Cambridgeshire, and a number of other counties, did not have an official flag. All there was before was the Cambridgeshire County Council Flag. This month’s club spotlight focuses on The March Society, our food page will provide you with delicious, albeit unhealthy, way to start the weekend and you can read about all the latest film to releases courtesy of the Light Cinema and much more. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed making it.

The winning design by Brady Ells features three gold crowns representing East Anglia, placed against a blue field with wavy lines representing the river Cam and are in the colours of Cambridge University. His design was chosen by the public in a competition organised by adventurer and campaigner Andy Strangeway. This is the fifth time Andy has organised a competition like this and he explained the steps taken to do so for Cambridgeshire, he said: “When I realised that Cambridgeshire never had a flag, that’s how I became interested. “I then launched a competition for people to design a flag and 17 designs came in, we had some designs from Cambridgeshire, some from Brazil and some from Sweden. “Then myself, a representative from the Flag Institute, the Chairman of Cambridgeshire County Council and other local leaders (including Ross McGivern from Fenland District Council) eliminated these down to six designs and those six designs were put to a public vote.” The result was unanimous as Brady Ells design received more than two-thirds of all the votes cast and Andy explained what advantages having an official flag will bring to Cambridgeshire, and how the whole competition didn’t cost a penny, he said: “It was just based

on the goodwill of everybody, I gave my time for free, Graham Bartram (the Flag Institute’s Chief Vexillologist) gave up his time and the judges gave up their time freely. “The beauty of this now is you’ve got brand Cambridgeshire and it’s how you use it. There is no copyright; nobody owns the design so it’s totally free to use. You could say this a wonderful present to the folk of Cambridgeshire to go and make business, to celebrate their cultural heritage, their sporting achievements, that’s what it’s about.” As previously mentioned this is the fifth time Andy has organised a campaign to create a flag for a region of the UK, and he explained why he decided to launch the very first one for the East Riding of Yorkshire, he said: “I do a lot of outdoor activities and I sleep in remote locations and I decided to sleep on the summit of all 52 counties of England and Wales. “When I did this if there was a flag for that county I decided to take that flag to the summit. Then the legislation with regards to flag flying was slightly tweaked in September 2012 and it states that you can fly flags of the Ridings of Yorkshire, but at that point there were no flags for the Ridings of Yorkshire. I’m a proud man from the East Riding so the first thing I did was establish a competition and that’s how things unfolded.” After finding a flag for the East Riding Andy then established competitions to find flags for the North and West Ridings of Yorkshire as well as County Durham before launching the Cambridgeshire flag competition in May 2014.

In the Interest of Economy! n the first weekend of February my husband and I awoke late on the Saturday morning and decided that we deserved a treat for brunch. However, we are on an economy drive after Christmas, so determining what we were going to have, had to be based on what was available at that moment in the kitchen.

The meagre scraps left in the fridge did not inspire us. Then my husband, who was reading a newspaper, noted that it was Super Bowl weekend and said we should go American for Brunch. So, with that theme in mind, I prowled around the kitchen looking for inspiration. We had half a bloomer loaf, a little stale but ok for toast. We had some bacon in the freezer I had bought to slap on the Christmas turkey but never used. It

was an offcut pack so a bit of a lottery as to what it might contain but then it came to me, I would make French toast with cinnamon and crispy bacon!

I pulled the bacon offcuts apart, cut them into strips and put them under the grill to crisp up. Follow my recipe for the cinnamon French toast, then dish it up and scatter the crispy bacon all around each plate and top off with warmed maple syrup. Quite delicious, but I should add that this is probably not on any New Year diet you might be on!

Cinnamon French Toast

u 1 tbsp ground cinnamonu 100g caster sugaru 4 slices of white bread (preferably stale)u 115g butteru 700ml milk (semi skimmed)u 6 large eggsu ¼ tsp saltu 2 tsp pure vanilla extractu Maple syrup to serve

1. Preheat your oven to 200oC

2. Line a baking tray with foil (make sure it goes up the sides to retain liquid)

3. Mix the butter, cinnamon and sugar in a bowl to form a paste

4. Place the slices of bread on the tray and spread the butter, cinnamon and sugar paste on the upturned side of each slice

5. Toast the bread in the oven until it has caramelised and is crunchy on top (about 7-10 minutes)

6. Reduce the oven heat to 190oC

Whisk the milk, eggs, salt and vanilla in a separate bowl and poor over the toast in the baking tray. This is why it is important to line the sides with the foil. Let it all sit for about 15 minutes so that it the toast has time to absorb the custard mix.

When it is all nice and soggy, bake for 30 minutes until puffed and golden and no liquid seeps out when you press it. Enjoy the indulgence.

The sap will be rising and soon it will be too late to prune wisteria, clematis and buddleia so take advantage of any dry, bright days to sharpen your secateurs and get out into your borders. Do not panic if they have rusted shut or no longer cut the mustard, a complete range is available in-store from budget to best – some with a 10-year guarantee. Don’t prune evergreen shrubs until next month, they’ll need that extra growth to get them started and only prune winter flowering shrubs on their old wood, but make sure to leave a third of the shrub to promote new growth for this winter. Once soil temperatures are consistently above 6ºC you can begin to sow seeds outside. Sweet peas and broad beans can be sown first, but remember; if there are any cold nights forecast make sure you cover them up with a seedling cloche, which is made for use on open ground or raised beds.

he Branch held its Annual General Meeting on Thursday 12th February. This year we saw our Deputy Chairman, William Evans, regretfully standing down after many years service to the organisation. After thanking William for the time and effort he had put into the Branch, the committee moved for nominations to the post and we are pleased to report that Les Lane, our Ceremonial Officer, was voted in. Other Branch Officers stood for re-election and were returned by the members. We believe our Branch of the RNA is unique in recognizing the valuable role played by associate members and elect an Associate Member Representative to the Committee to ensure their views are heard. This year Ina Rasell was proposed and subsequently elected. Also Mr. and Mrs. Tunley were appointed Branch Auditors for 2015. Patricia Rogers informed members that she had applied for and just received the Arctic Emblem on behalf of her father, Douglas Donnelly. This award commemorates the service of merchant seamen and members of the armed forces who braved the appalling conditions and dangers of the arctic region between September 1939 and May 1945. Our Chairman Terry Shad expressed disappointment that the medal had been simply sent through the post

rather than formally presented to Patricia, given the sacrifices her father had made for us all and determined to investigate if that could be corrected. Notwithstanding the AGM, all our Branch meetings and events are fun to attend. The comradeship and support for others that we experienced when in the Royal Navy are continued within the RNA and as the Branch Public Relations Officer (PRO), I try to present the Branch to the world through articles such as this and our web site. Some weeks ago it became clear to me that the first web site I built for the Branch early last year was simply too factual and failed to present what being part of our organisation is actually like. A fact my shipmates were too polite to tell me, bless them, though the delight expressed when I made it known I was going to revamp the site was apparent! I published a new site on the 4th February 2015 in the hope it better presents March Branch of the RNA as the thriving and fun organisation it is. I remind readers that membership is open to all branches and disciplines of serving and retired members of the Royal Navy and their families. Please take a look at the new site www.marchrna.org and see what you think.

he town of March was originally two settlements: Merche around St Wendreda’s and Mercheford the later settlement at the river crossing. The month of March heralded the New Year until 1752, and March 20th is the Equinox when day and night are the same length. Lady Day on March 25th was historically an important festival, a quarter day when bills were paid, often settled in the fens in Lent by the payment of eels. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday after Shrove Tuesday and continues for six weeks until Easter. On March 25th 1622 March churchwardens paid ‘iiij’ (4) shillings for the town’s previous year’s due for ‘maimed souldiers’. (1) During Lent, Mothering Sunday was a time when people returned to their mother church. (2) St Wendreda’s was a chapel of ease of Doddington church and March’s only church until St John’s (1871), followed by St Mary’s, St Peter’s and St Mary Magdalen’s, and is in the diocese of Ely. Young people ‘in service’ were given a day’s holiday on Mothering Sunday to visit their mother and take gifts. From Victorian times Simnel cakes, with eleven marzipan balls to represent the disciples minus Judas, were eaten at the family gatherings on Mothering Sunday and at Easter. March 1894 saw the completion of the Tranship Shed at Whitemoor which had been in progress since December. It was said to be ‘one of the best constructed sheds on the GE and GN Joint Company’s system’. The former wooden shed was burnt to the ground in 1893 and a temporary shed had been used for the ‘very large proportions’ of transhipping. The new brick building was 200 ft

long, 72ft wide, 16 ft to the eaves and 38 ft to the ridge. The walls were faced with Leicestershire bricks and the iron roof covered with 5000 pieces of glass plus slates and boards. VOLUNTEERS from “Safe Local Trades” in Peterborough joined forces in their own DIY SOS-style transformation project for the city’s newly opened Dementia Resource Centre. The facility, on Lincoln Road, opened its door last September, providing a hub for dementia support, (offering information, advice, activity groups and training for carers). But it was when the centre appealed for help in transforming a patch of wasteland into a community garden - where patients and groups can plant flowers and grow vegetables - that “Safe Local Trades” came to the rescue. Following an appeal to members by “Safe Local Trades” director, Eileen Le Voi, free materials and labour by generous volunteers have led to the revamping of the area to create a calming and relaxing space. Among those offering their help were Travis Perkins in Ivatt Way, Peterborough, who provided all the building materials free of charge. The design and transformation of the garden was thanks to “Safe Local Trades” landscape experts, members Oakfield UK and Style Home Improvements. “Safe Local Trades” director, Eileen Le Voi, who co-ordinated the project, said: “These generous members had no hesitation in offering their services, skills and time to this remarkable and very worthwhile project – I can’t thank them enough. “The end result looks wonderful, and we all hope that the patients and activity groups using the garden will get enormous pleasure from it.” Rob Henchy, interim commissioning manager, Adult Social Care, Peterborough City Council, said: “This act of kindness and generosity, reminiscent of the BBC’s “DIY SOS” programme, is thanks to individuals from Oakfield UK, for excavating the land, and from Style Home Improvements, for laying the paving slabs, and of course to Travis Perkins, for donating the materials for the ground works. “A huge thank you from everyone at the Dementia Resource Centre to you all and especially to Eileen Le Voi from “Safe Local Trades”, Peterborough, for making this happen.” As the Dementia Resource Centre was so grateful, a plaque was erected on the wall, thanking “Safe Local Trades” and their members for donating their time and labour in making it all possible. The centre is run by the Alzheimer’s Society and funded by Peterborough City Council.

Thick Socks, Woolly Hats and Ice Breakers at the Ready

As I wrote this report I was looking out at my fish pond, which was covered in ice and snow, and thought ‘what person in their right mind would want to go fishing in this weather’? Then I realised that I had to get my bait ready as I was fishing the next day in the HAJAC Winter League at Benwick – along with another 70 mad anglers. The match was fished on the Old Nene, Raveley Drain and Factory Bank at Ramsey. The winner was Abbi Kendal who fished the Factory Bank section; she weighed in with 8lb 10oz of small Roach. Abbi lives in March and is a member of the English Ladies Fishing Squad.

The Old Nene through March is fishing hard with little flow and no colour in the water. 6lb was all that was needed to win the local club match at West End Park. One stretch which did still produce in the cold weather was the 20ft drain at Chain Bridge, where there were plenty of Roach still feeding. The Pike were active as well, with Mick Curtis landing eight in one session, the biggest of which weighed in at 16lb.

The last open match on the Old Nene, which was fished at the end of January, saw Harlow

angler Billy Beham take top spot with 22lb. He was drawn on Pig Market corner, and second place went to March angler Rob Wright, who sat next to Wigstones Bridge and caught 18lb of Roach.

On the lakes fishing has been hard, I fished with the Townsend Angling Club at Decoy on Elm Lake and only needed seven fish for 22lb to take top spot. Pete Church only had two fish for 9lb which was good enough for second place. On the same day the Decoy Open, which was fished on Beastie Lake and usually requires catches of Carp to well over 100lb to win; was won with a catch of only 25lb of Roach. One lake that has seen plenty of action is Townsend Lakes, which hold a couple of open matches each week. With the food going in regularly the fish seem to be responding and 60lb is needed to win most matches.

Finally, by the time you read this report there will only be two weeks of the river season left – it ends on March 14th. Also don’t forget your rod licence runs out on the 31st March.

Cambridgeshire Hearing Help is extending its hearing help support to the Fens in 2015. The charity works with the local audiology services and the County Council Sensory team to provide hearing aid servicing and battery supplies to NHS hearing aid users in local, easy to reach venues. It also advises on much needed additional equipment such as TV amplifiers and telephones. Director, Frances Dewhurst said: “Volunteering offers opportunities to learn new skills, join a friendly team and support your local community. Our volunteers find the work extremely rewarding and stay with us for many years.” Cambridgeshire Hearing Help is looking for new volunteers in Fenland, especially in March and Wisbech, and will be running a training course starting on Tuesday 10th March at the March Youth & Community Centre. Become an Eddie’s Befriender

Eddie’s – a local charity which supports adults with learning disabilities through its befriending scheme – is looking for more people to volunteer in Fenland (particularly in March and Wisbech). If you are aged 18 or over you could make a difference to someone’s life by sparing a few hours each month to do things like meals out, trips to the seaside or meeting for a cuppa and a chat. Volunteer co-ordinator Suzanne Lombardo, said: “Volunteering is always fun, doesn’t cost you a penny and it really does make a big difference to the person being befriended as well as the volunteer.” To volunteer with Eddie’s you do not need any previous experience as full training is provided free and volunteers are matched with someone based on age, location and interests. Bev Housden, a volunteer befriender who joined Eddie’s after seeing a newspaper advert, said: “Having retired from nursing I wanted to

give something back to the community and I’ve never looked back.” Bev has been a befriender to Steph, who is in her mid-40s and has mild learning disabilities, for almost three years. In that time Bev has taken Steph bowling, horse riding and to weekly artworks sessions; and has noticed the difference it has made, she said: “Steph’s confidence in going to different places and meeting new people has gone from strength to strength. “I have enjoyed befriending Steph and watching her gain confidence while making new friends. Cat Allergy AdvicePeople can acquire a new kitten and not experience any allergy symptoms until much later. It can take anywhere from a few months to a number of years for a person to build up the antibodies which cause allergies, as a kitten’s skin is more supple than an older cat and produces less oils (sebum). As the kitten ages it will produce more sebum and therefore more allergens.How can I reduce cat allergens?Interestingly a spayed or neutered cat produces less allergens, and male cats produce more allergens than female cats. Consult your vet about products that you can bathe your cat in to help reduce the allergens. Ensure your cat does not have fleas by using a preventative treatment all year round that not only kills adult fleas, but stops the flea life cycle; as this causes the cat to scratch and throw more dander into the air. Designate your bedroom as a cat-free zone. Begin your programme of allergen reduction by washing bedding, drapes and pillows or even replace them. Use plastic covers that are designed to prevent allergens from penetrating your mattress and pillows. Allergen proof covers are available from most chemists, but don’t expect results overnight. Cat allergens are one-sixth the size of pollens, so it may take months to reduce them significantly. Restrict your cat’s access to designated areas

inside your home. If your cat is an indoor cat then allow it some time outside where dander will waft away in the wind. Brush your cat in the fresh air to prevent loose allergen-carrying hair from dispersing through your home. Ventilate your house. Opening windows and using fans can help increase air exchange and decrease airborne allergens. Vacuum carpets regularly as this will reduce the allergens. Cat dander settles onto carpets and soft furnishings, which act as a reservoir for the allergen, releasing it back into the air when touched. Wool attracts allergens, so try to avoid wearing it. Reduce your other allergies – few individuals are allergic only to cats. Keep the litter tray in a well-ventilated area and keep it clean! Cat allergens are found in urine so to help prevent allergic reactions to the litter box, use a brand of litter that is less dusty and have someone in the household who is not allergic clean it. I’m having terrible cat allergy symptoms. Should I rehome my cat?Before taking the drastic measure of rehoming your cat, first make sure that it is a cat allergy you are suffering from. Your doctor can perform an allergy test to determine which allergens affect you. Also remember that allergens from a cat can remain in your home for a long period of time after the cat has been removed so you may still suffer from the symptoms.

The new tax year will soon be with us so now is a good time to get organised because, if you reduce tax there is more money for you. Tax comes in many disguises, most of us expect to have our earnings taxed and to pay VAT when we buy many goods and services, but some taxes can legitimately be reduced or erased completely. A good example of this is putting surplus funds held ‘for a rainy day’ in an ISA where the interest earned is paid tax free, interest on other savings and deposit accounts are usually taxed at 20% before it is credited to your account. If saving a lump sum for later times a pension arrangement might be even more tax efficient because, for every £80 you put in tax relief at 20% makes the investment £100 – however there are limits and you might even find that if your employer makes the payment you don’t have to pay National Insurance (another tax) on those contributions. If you run your own business, have you considered whether changing to a limited company could save you money? A limited liability company may also protect you in the event of legal action against you, so there are many aspects to consider. Get your accountant and independent financial adviser speaking to each other. Many families have created wealth over their working lives and might have inherited some along the way, if your estate is worth over £325,000 you might have an Inheritance Tax

(IHT) issue for your beneficiaries to sort out; the obvious starting point is to ensure your Wills are valid and up to date. A couple could have two IHT allowances to use – provided the executors make the application. If your estate is likely to exceed £650,000 – you really should get some professional advice while there is time to make plans that will allow access to the assets you might require later, and safeguarding other assets to ensure your chosen beneficiaries get more than the tax man! Pensions can provide up to 25% of the fund value as a tax free lump sum, the remaining fund can generate income that is taxed. If you cash in more than the 25% tax free allowance that lump sum is taxable – if you are not careful this could be at 40% or even 45%. Are you buying a house jointly with someone else?If so it is essential that you should give some thought to what will happen in the future, whether you are buying as a married couple or as partners. Whatever your own individual circumstances you will need to consider what may happen when your present relationship ends whether by death, separation, divorce or other cause. If you are buying property jointly there are two types of ownership you should consider:-

Beneficial Joint TenantsMeans that you will own the property in equal shares, and that on death of either of you, the property will become the sole property of the survivor. This is the usual basis for those buying as husband and wife and especially as first time marriages.

Tenants in Common If you buy on this basis it means that you

own the property in specified shares (which may well still be equally). In the event of the death of a joint owner the share of that partner will not transfer to the other partner automatically and instead forms part of that partner’s estate and will be dealt with by his or her will.

Married and unmarried couples should also think about how much of the deposit each partner is putting up for the purchase and how best to preserve this if a breakup were to occur. The courts have considerable discression when making decisions over houses within divorce proceedings and take into consideration child welfare. If you have any doubts as to your own position please ask our conveyancing team for advice.

Hey Y’all. I hope everyone is feeling fabulous now that we will soon be moving into summer. Not hotter weather but it’ll soon be summer so hooray!

We’ve had some brilliant development at Neale-Wade Academy recently. There was a surprise visit from Ofsted that rattled everyone’s cage into action, but we appear to have good results. The surprise had the staff’s boots shaking but then again it really shows a real representation of our excellent Academy. Reports are being filed so I’ll give an update on the official outcome later on, but the response was very positive and why shouldn’t it be? There has been a great improvement in the past few years and of course it will continue on an upward peak to become even better.

I can report what an honour the visit from Princess Anne was. Personally I’ve always been supportive of our Royal Family. It’s such an honour to be British and have such a long line of royal history. So having a royal visit our little town is probably news of the year. Those students who did get to meet the Princess were also very proud of the privilege.

Recently Neale-Wade, Burrowmoor and Kingsfield have made their own Lego robotic union. Students from all three schools have been gathering to make Lego robots. Personally I think it’s all a bit ‘The Big Bang Theory’. Bazinga! It’s absolutely awesome. There is much positivity in having a unity between the primary and secondary schools. It’s as Henry Ford once said: ‘Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.’ All three schools are funded by the Active Learning Trust. It’s lovely to see progression in the community.

Fenland has received some crazy cool news in the last month. We’ve received £1,000,000 in funding from the Arts Council UK. An exciting vision to tempt, surprise and empower communities in Fenland and Forest Heath with the best of the arts is launching this year. The project entitled ‘Market Place’ is funded by Arts Council East as part of their Creative People and Places fund to focus investment in parts of the country where people’s involvement in the arts is significantly below the national average. For an aspiring events manager like myself this is a great opportunity, and for the town it is certainly worthy of record. Hopefully some of the funding will be allowed appreciation from us and we’ll get some brilliant events out of it. Updates on this as the project comes along.

Recent words from Jason Wing stated that ‘assessment data is strong’. Recent mocks and assessments have exceeded expectations and suggest that we’ll receive good results this year. No pressure guys!

March Royal Naval Association Veteran’s Dinner

In conjunction with Cambridgeshire County Council, March Royal Naval Association is planning to celebrate the end of hostilities. This Branch has for many years entertained our local veterans and this year it is hoped to extend our invitation to both military and civilian veterans. We are keen to hear from veterans of the Air Raid Precautions, The Women’s Land Army, The Army Fire Service and the Home Guard; in addition we shall be contacting service organisations locally. We are limited by space and we anticipate up to 50 veterans could join our members on this 1945 themed evening, if oversubscribed a draw will take place for representatives of each service applying.

At this time our proposals are dependent on the assistance of Cambridgeshire County Council and we shall keep all interested parties fully informed. The proposed date for this event is Friday June 26th and will take place at the Conservative Club, Creek Road, March.

Music at Georges14th: The 59ers reunited. The 59ers were first conceived by an 11-year-old boy who inspired his dad with his passion for live music. After several years of playing locally, and being headhunted by a Shadows tribute band, Tom Harlock, Martin Ringham (from renowned local band Whiskey Twist) joined Father Pete Savage to perform with Martin Savage in the 59ers reunited.

This Month at the Cinema

With the Easter holidays at the end of the month, March is a big month for comedy and kids’ films.

March 20th sees the release of the next Divergent film: Insurgent. It continues the story of Tris and Four as they battle to survive.

Also released on the same day is new DreamWorks animation Home. It tells the story of Oh a little alien who crash lands on Earth and is swiftly followed by an army who take over the planet.

Just before Easter, on March 27th, the long-awaited new SpongeBob Squarepants movie: Sponge Out of Water and live action Disney flick Cinderella hit our screens.

If you are a fan of comedy, you have three to choose from this month – Unfinished Business

on March 6th, Top Five on March 13th and Get Hard on March 27th. Unfinished Business stars Vince Vaughan as a small business owner who needs to land a contract to save his company, but he finds himself pitted against his former employer and needs to pull out all the stops to land the deal.

Top Five is the latest Chris Rock movie and sees him trying to make it as a serious

actor when his reality star fiancée talks him into broadcasting their wedding on her TV show. Get Hard sees Will Ferrell as a millionaire who is charged with fraud and is terrified of what awaits him in prison. So he turns to Darnell Lewis (Kevin Hart) to prep him for his stay behind bars.

Our last recommendation is Chappie, which is the story of a robot that is kidnapped by activists and allowed to flourish as an individual. However, the authorities are frightened by the implications of what could happen and plot to kill him before he can influence others. Chappie is released on March 6th.

The March Society (TMS), March’s civic society, is now in its 8th year. We are a voluntary community group set up for the people of March to promote and protect all the very best of March’s built and natural environment, and so help to make March a place to be proud of. March has a fine heritage which can be seen in its surviving buildings. We belong to Civic Voice, the national charity for the civic movement, which aims to make places more attractive, enjoyable and distinctive; and to promote civic pride. TMS is also a member of the East of England Civic and Amenity Societies (EECAS), attending meetings, workshops and conferences in the region. This enables TMS to share news, views and concerns with other societies. Fenland Civic Societies group is chaired by David Oliver, Fenland’s Heritage Champion. English Heritage supports Champions to ‘use the historic environment as an asset to help achieve their local authority’s strategic goals and bring a better quality of life to their community’. As a member, the March Society continues to raise residents’ concerns about heritage buildings in March with Fenland conservation officers and to hear of progress. We are in contact with local and district councillors, and with various national heritage conservation groups who can be consulted for help and advice. The Society also takes part in St George’s Fayre and is on the St George’s committee, as well as on the committees of other March community groups. Our monthly talks are held on the second Wednesday of the month in March Library at 7pm. They cover various topics concerned with March. Heritage and audit walks are organised in summer. Each September TMS has coordinated the March Heritage Open Days walks and events with buildings’ representatives and other community groups, there are more participants every year and we look forward to this September‘s events. We continue to publicise members’ concerns,

views and events, using Facebook, Twitter, ShapeYourPlace and local newspapers to share information, videos and photographs. The Society has built up a strong local and national network of supporters in various areas of conservation and heritage amongst its large number of followers. The March Society was set up at a time when residents expressed concerns about the state of March and its heritage buildings including those which had been demolished. Since TMS was launched there have been many improvements. Residents’ concerns which we have raised have been, or are being, dealt with. Dilapidated buildings are being restored, concerns raised on audit walks about traffic signs and markings, and the state of streets and buildings have all been reported to the councils. Many residents have remarked positively on the amount of remedial work that has taken place.

If The March Society is to continue, we need more members and active supporters to take part in projects such as reviewing listed buildings, carrying out street audits and photographing Heritage Buildings of Local Interest. When March teenager Elliott Harding came to me for help after he was refused £8000 funding for life-changing surgery, I was determined to see this unfair decision reversed. The 18-year-old had been refused

funding for an operation to have his rib-cage rebuilt, which is needed because his ribs are currently compressing his heart and lungs leaving him out of breath and in pain. I got in touch with the Exceptional Cases Panel and was delighted when I was able to call Elliott to tell him that he would be receiving the funding. I wish Elliott the best of luck in the future.

It was a pleasure to present awards at the March Air Training Corps presentation night. Awards included best cadet of the year as well as accolades for the winners of various shooting and inter-flight competitions. The entire squadron should feel proud of all of their hard work.

I am continuing to push for refurbishments to the March Community Centre and have been working with Lisa Dickinson of Dance Mania on an application to Fenland Youth District Council for a grant of £1,000 for new flooring. The Centre’s current flooring often causes splinters and is not suitable for the children

using it. We also hope to attract investment from the £1m ‘Market Place’ scheme, funded by Arts Council East as part of their Creative People and Places fund, and I will update residents in due course.

Potholes along Whittlesey Road, Whitemoor Road, Rodham Road, Floods Ferry Road and Knights End Road have been repaired as part of a pothole clear-up in Fenland. For once our area received the most within the county, with £580,000 of the £1.9 million potholes grant from the Government to Cambridgeshire County Council being spent on potholes in Fenland and East Cambridgeshire. Since my election I have consistently raised concerns that Cambridge and the south of the county often receives more funding than we do. So it was great to win the largest share of these funds to help repair our roads.

In Parliament I voted in favour of allowing mitochondrial replacement – a procedure aimed at preventing children being born with incurable genetic diseases. Mitochondrial disease is a technical glitch in the genes that act as batteries to the body’s cells. I listened to the evidence very closely and it is fair to say the procedure has widespread support from the science community as well as leading charities and as such I was happy to support it.
