2 Discovering March August 2014

dmiral Nelson once sent a signal stating: ‘England Expects That Every Man Will Do His Duty’. While this was followed by his fleet, resulting in victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, this signal definitely wasn’t followed by the England football team who yet again disappointed at the World Cup.

England aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the tournament and I know by now you must be wondering why on Earth I’m still talking about the World Cup in August! Strange as it might seem it does allow me to move on nicely to what we’ve got in the magazine for you this month.

As it’s now August the new football season is fast approaching, which is why this month’s spotlight is on March Town FC who are hoping for much brighter things in 2014/15. We have some new contributors for you to enjoy, most notably you can hear from our Mayor Kit Owen about what he has been getting up to since donning the Mayoral gown and chain for a sixth time.

There is an interview with Labour MEP Richard Howitt, who is the senior serving Euro MP for our region. He offers a fascinating insight into the work of an MEP and shares his views on Britain’s membership of the European Union. As ever you’ll be able to hear from our local MP Steve Barclay.

You’ll be able to read all about an interesting playwork pilot at Burrowmoor Primary School, known as the Junk Bunk. Friends of March Railway Station (FOMRS) recently launched two newly refurbished rooms on Platform two; these rooms will be available for use by the community. Find out how to book them inside.

Finally as summer is now in full flow I’m sure many of you will be heading off on your holidays soon, as I write this mine’s still a month away, sigh. So far the weather has been pretty good, fingers crossed it will hold for the duration.

Junk Bunk at Burrowmoor urrowmoor Out of School Club has been involved in a pilot scheme known as the Junk Bunk project which aims to enrich children’s play experiences by providing them with a good play space and lots of ‘loose parts’ which can include logs, tyres, cardboard, rope, fabric, sand, crates, boxes, shells and baskets. Out of School Club Co-ordinator Teresa Stiles explained how Burrowmoor became involved with the Junk Bunk, she said: “The prospect of the Junk Bunk was first introduced at a meeting in Ely last summer. It seemed like a good idea and I remember thinking it may be good playwork and for our club. Having discussed this with our school’s Head teacher, I contacted Verity Windmill (Childcare and Playwork Adviser) and said we would be willing to be part of the pilot scheme for the Junk Bunk. “A few months of planning, preparation and organisation followed, and at times I wondered why I had opened my mouth and volunteered! Finally last autumn the slabs had been donated and laid, the shed brought and erected. We received our delivery of treasures, or junk, depending on your perspective, and we were finally ready to go.” She then described how the children at Burrowmoor use the Junk Bunk and what some of the most popular items of ‘junk’ are, saying: “Once the Junk Bunk is open for the day the children are able to choose where they want to play. This can be in our building, in our purpose built fenced outdoor space or on the school field. They then have the added option of being able to get what they want from the Junk Bunk and play with it. “The children have some definite favourites. They love the football netting; this becomes many things from blankets to hammocks and we have a hospital crutch which often finds children

suddenly developing a limp.” As well as being popular amongst the children the Junk Bunk project has proved a hit with the parents, “The parents love the fact that the children are getting outside and playing,” said Teresa. “They are getting used to the fact that often children want to have ‘just five more minutes’ before being extracted from the club to go home. When the pilot is over there’s every chance that it may also be used and developed by other areas of the school.” Teresa also explained the benefits of participating in the Junk Bunk pilot, she said: “We’ve noticed that there’s a reduction in the time that children want to be in watching TV or playing on the Wii as they are electing to go outside and play in the wider area. “There has been a significant reduction in disagreements when they have the huge outdoor space to play in. Looking outside you can often see a game of football going on with some children, and various other areas of activity with a whole range of bits and pieces from the Junk Bunk. Children running in and out and lots of happy children’s noises.”

InfoBurrowmoor Out of School Club is open from 8am to 6pm around the school day and all holidays, in a new building attached to the main school. For more information contact: Teresa on 01354 602 970 (Direct number with answer phone) or email: [email protected] Burrowmoor School on 01354 652 330 (School office hours only)Website: www.burrowmoor.net/oosc.shtml

Dear readers, Do you use Lincs Alert? I signed up to Lincs Alert when it was first launched in September 2011 and since then, I still come across a considerable number of people who have not heard of it so, if you are one of those, please read on as you are missing out!

What is Lincs Alert?Lincs Alert is a community messaging system run by Lincolnshire Police. Once you are registered, you will receive regular live updates about crime and anti-social behaviour that is happening in your area. You will also receive crime reduction and community safety advice and gain access to crime figures for your area via the website. It also acts as a two-way communication tool where you are encouraged to report any information that you might have previously thought was too trivial or not worth reporting to the Police. Alerts can be received via email, text or telephone. The Lincs Alert system also works hand in hand with Neighbourhood Watch and operates an on-line virtual NHW scheme where you can share ideas with other members in your area.

Benefits of Lincs Alert:• Website available 24 hours a day• Totally confidential, secure service, your data is never shared without your consent• Subscribe to receive alerts by email, phone and text• Crime reduction and community safety advice• Report information directly to your Neighbourhood Policing Team• Receive feedback and updates about your reports• Opportunities to join an on-line virtual Neighbourhood and home watch network• A completely free service• Unsubscribe at anytime

| A word from - your Mayor Kit Owen

espite the vociferous protestations, I was dragged kicking and screaming to the role of Mayor for the 6th occasion on 12th May 2014. I had been asked several months earlier by individual Councillors and repeated my mantra; “I’ve done it 5 times since 1983, and I said a few years ago that 2004/05 was the last occasion and I wouldn’t do it on my own”. To no avail, last year the post of Deputy Mayor reared up and I was asked, “Well at least be Deputy, that’s not too onerous”. I fell for it and of course earlier this year when it was decided who should be Mayor, I was levered into the role. The usual Mayor making ceremony was held at the Town Hall on 12th May among the Councillors and my personal guests, plus any of the thousands of March registered voters who wished to attend. I dread the day some 16,000 plus on the electoral register decide to take the option available and turn up. I think as usual there was probably one or two. The Ceremony consists of the outgoing Mayor, nominating the new Mayor who has already been agreed by Council, going out to a room together, with the new Mayor, divesting himself of the gown and chain and assisting the new Mayor with the gown and Mayoral Chain etc. The new Mayor returns to the Council Chamber, thanks the outgoing Mayor. Thanks the Council for the appointment as new Mayor and proclaims that the Mayor will suitably fill the role as expected for the next 12 months. The Deputy Mayor is then appointed and enrolled in a similar manner. Once that has occurred the Council meeting continues as normal with the business on the agenda. My first major event as Mayor, was to welcome some 40 French guests off a coach from St Jean De Braye, who were visiting for the coming weekend. That went very well with the French guests being as punctual as expected. Before the guests were given the opportunity to meet their hosts, we had speeches from me and the representative of the Twinning Association from St Jean De Braye. Not many days later was the three day March Summer Festival, for which appropriate arrangements had been made, other than of course the weather. Events on the Friday evening went well and surprisingly the various stall holders on the Saturday morning coped.

Then came the parade and fortunately, just as it was about to start, the rain which had been coming down heavily, ceased. The parade set off, the people lined the route, maybe not as many as usual due to the weather, but all was well. The rest of Saturday and Sunday went off as anticipated without further rain interruption. Since those events I have attended, on behalf of the Town, a tour of R. A. F. Alconbury, a Reception with the High Sheriff, various briefings and World War One Centenary Commemorations. There have been various Flag Raising ceremonies to commemorate Armed Forces Day and Civic Services in the various towns of Cambridgeshire. The flower boxes on the town bridge and various other railings around the town together with the huge flower tubs, of which there are many more this year, look absolutely superb and they certainly are looked after to enhance their longevity. Thank you to the active Members of March Street Pride, for doing such a worthwhile job.

I hope the people of March choose to use the parks and riverside walks we have in the town. When the weather is good as it has been so far, it is good to take advantage. With schools now broken up, there will be people Staycationing, (is that really a word?) and Vacationing and carrying on as normal, whatever you’re doing I hope you enjoy your Summer.

It’s been a pleasure to be invited to use this medium to share with you the foregoing information. I think there are many things with which to involve yourself in this town of March, whether they are meetings, groups or clubs. So I hope that no one of any age in our Town has a need to be lonely, with so many things to do.

Wimblington Summer ShowWimblington’s Summer Show, one of the major events of the village’s summer calendar takes place on Sunday, 3rd August. The show covers a wide range of activities, from cookery and preserves through vegetables, fruit, flower, floral, art and handicrafts to quilting, eggs and honey, and has categories for every age. There is something for everyone to try their hand, whatever their level of expertise! There will also be a seed swap, so you can bring along your unused seeds - it doesn’t matter if they are old and out of date, someone might be able to persuade them to germinate - they don’t have to be shop bought, if you have collected seeds from your garden or greenhouse, just pop them in a paper bag, label them up and bring them along. You can pick up whatever seeds someone else has brought. There is no cost. Entrance is free and tea and coffee will be available. Local businesses Mill Hill Garage, the Golden Lion at Stonea and Skylark have all gener-ously contributed some cracking prizes for the draw, but you’ve got to be there to buy the tickets on the day. Entries for the show will be accepted on the evening of Saturday 2nd August, between 6pm and 7pm and also between 9am and 11am on the morning of Sunday 3rd August. The show is for everyone, old or young, so please come along and support your village show - entries from March very welcome. The Treat Me Local community health campaign has secured its first success, with two new blood testing machines generously donated to Doddington and Chatteris GP surgeries. The community health campaign was launched last month in conjunction with our local GPs, and is backed by both local papers. It sets out ten issues where health treatment should be localised to reshape services around the needs of patients and save the time, cost and inconvenience of travel to hospital for treatments that can be done closer to home. If you have not signed up to the campaign please do so by adding your support at www.treatmelocal.net so that we can put pressure, as a community, on NHS managers to move treatment which does not need to be performed in hospitals back into the community.

It was March to Westminster for local March Air Cadet Josef Pankhurst, who had the opportunity to play for the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street. Two other members of the Squadron were also recently recognised for their work, with Cadet Warrant Officer Katie Dickson receiving the Parker Britannia Trophy, awarded for excellence in the field of aviation. While Flight Sergeant Brian Goodall was awarded a Wing Commander’s commendation in recognition of his commitment to the Air Training Corps. The Squadron are continuing to do fantastic work and congratulations to all involved.

Securing more sports funding remains a key priority for me. Following on from my meeting

on swimming funding with David Sparkes, Chief Executive of British Swimming and local swimming clubs, I am pleased to report that the March Marlins have now been able to secure extra pool time for training, which will begin in September. The club host some very talented individuals and I hope that this extra time will allow them to develop the skills of their swimmers further.

Pot holes are a constant irritant to drivers and also a particular danger to motorbikes, so it is welcome news that Cambridgeshire has been awarded an extra £2 million by the Government to fix potholes in the county’s roads, on top of the previous £1.5 million announced. I have written to the County Council asking for assurance that the Fen roads will be given priority so that our area gets its fair share of this money when the work programme for pot holes repairs is decided.

Protecting the most vulnerable workers from abuse matters for our community, particularly when there have been too many cases of such abuse in the Fens. I had the opportunity to speak in Parliament on the Modern Slavery Bill, raising the particular local challenges faced in the Fens in relation to the protection of both vulnerable workers and the linked anti-social behaviour often experienced by local residents.

Shannon - looking out for the youth and events right here in March

So much is available for young people, check out www.cambridgeshire.net or see what 20Twenty Productions.co.uk are up to.

The Summer Concert recently hit Neale-Wade and it went smashingly! There was a brilliant turnout and it was a great celebration of how hard the young musicians in the academy work. And well done to the music staff for motivating them and organising the event.

20Twenty Productions ‘Our big gig’ was on Sunday 13th July and the acts there were amazing. They included local celebrity Misty Jones, ex Neale-Wade sixth former Ashley Riley and local groups and soloists. The evening was very relaxing and despite a small turnout it still maintained its spirit until the end.

Mamma Mia! We all love a bit of hairbrush singing to super trooper but it doesn’t mean it’s in tune. The 20Twenty youth theatre was right on key. They busted out their moves too and really kept a strong energy with the audience. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time just wanting to get on stage and sing along.

20Twenty are currently running a digital workshop to help individuals gain experience in working with software. This can benefit everyone so feel free to come along. They are also running a music project which is FREE to work with experienced musicians and a music producer. Another exciting opportunity with 20Twenty is the School of rock happening this summer. For more information on these projects visit www.20twentyproductions.co.uk email [email protected] or call 01354 652 769. 20Twenty Productions recently revealed their intention to start an online magazine in partnership with Neale-Wade Academy. It will be run by Neale-Wade students and called #unlokd.

What is more exciting than prom? This year we said goodbye to the class of 2014 and they are heading off on their individual paths with a farewell at Elm Hall. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the teachers said they behaved brilliantly. It’ll be sad to see the year 11s go, but on behalf of Neale-Wade I’d like to wish them the best of luck with their future aspirations.

March has talent is fast approaching. Organised by Young People March (YPM) and 20Twenty Productions, the final will be on Friday 19th September at YPM, City Road, March, PE15 9LS. There will be a special performance from Misty Jones and auditions will be held on the 18thand 22nd of August, 12-3.30pm. Book via email at [email protected] or call 01354 650645. Big thanks to Roddons for sponsoring the event.

I love the spirit of Sports day and this year’s edition was held at Neale-Wade with 270 primary school children taking part. This was also to help with the transition of the children coming to Neale-Wade this September. Burrowmoor brought 60 year six students to the Academy for two weeks in order to help with the transition, this went swimmingly and hopefully the students will be at ease with the jump from primary to secondary.

It’s very nerve racking waiting for results, may the grade boundaries be in our favour! I am worried they’ll be harsh and I’ll miss it just slightly, but I’m remaining hopeful. I wish everyone the best of luck. Whether you are reading this and have had your results or you’re still waiting in suspense. If you know you’ve worked hard you’ll achieve your aims. Best Wishes.

MEP InterviewBy Andrew Smith

Labours’ Richard Howitt has been an MEP for over 20 years and is the senior serving Euro MP in our region, taking time out from his busy schedule he spoke to Discovering March.

Q. Why did you want to become an MEP?I worked in a local disability charity and got involved in organising European exchanges for disabled people. I could see the change it made to their lives and it instilled in me real hope and optimism about Britain being part of the European Union. I’d also become a local councillor as a proud member of the Labour Party and could easily have chosen domestic politics. However I didn’t see Europe as an alternative or a threat to national politics, but an opportunity to make things happen in the common interest of Britain and other EU countries. Q. Can you outline the scope of your role as an MEP?As a Member of the European Parliament I represent Cambridgeshire and wider East Anglia

in Parliament, giving help and advice directly to constituents, and partaking in drawing up and voting on legislation affecting Britain and all 28 European Union countries. I believe that as your Labour MEP, I can promote opportunities for jobs and business which are highly dependent on our membership of the European Union. I promote opportunities for local people to take part in European projects and work to get the biggest slice of the EU funding cake for local organisations. In Parliament, I forge constructive links with colleagues from different countries and parties to promote local and our national interests. I don’t fear opposing proposals if I don’t believe they are beneficial, but a Euro MP much more than an MP gets involved in negotiating decisions to secure the best for all.

Page 27: Discovering March issue 011, August 2014

August 2014 Discovering March 27

Q. You represent the East of England, in the time you’ve been an MEP can you highlight some of the work you’ve done to improve the region? Some local examples include championing European recycling targets, including partnering up with staff and volunteers at Cambridgeshire Community RePaint in March to prepare paint for reuse by Cambridgeshire families and community groups. As a member of a European Parliament committee responsible for European funding, I have played a key role in helping attract nearly £1/3billion to help businesses, public bodies and voluntary organisations in the region in the past six years alone. This has included supporting grants through local organisation Fens Adventurers to fund 66 rural development schemes locally, supporting the setting up and expansion of rural businesses, one of which involved a Fenland farm diversifying to produce its own olive oil. I’ve firmly put the East of England on the map of Europe and hosted influential visits to the constituency, for example bringing the European Parliament’s Employment and Social Affairs Committee to study the impact of migrants coming into Fenland. One moment of which I was very proud was when I presented the keys to the first family on a small new March social housing development, in homes designed to be highly friendly to the environment as part of a European-funded design project. I have also helped win EU funding to help unemployed youngsters and those dependent on foodbanks. Q. What is your MEP salary? The standard monthly payment for all MEPs is £6,537. Q. You’ve been an MEP since 1994, in that time how has the role changed and how has the public’s perception of the role changed? The reputation of the European Parliament which Eurosceptics seek to propagate as a ‘talking shop,’ actually preceded my time as a Euro MP. Ironically key legislative powers for the European Parliament came as a result of Margaret Thatcher signing up to the Single Market Act and John Major’s support for the system of joint decision-making enshrined in the Maastricht

Treaty. Today’s misrepresentation, misuse and damage to the reputation of the EU by UKIP politicians represents an all-time low. The dilemma for someone who wants to work constructively as I do, is I refuse to become a propagandist for Europe simply to rebuff those who choose that role against it. Instead I hope hard work leading to concrete results for local people is the best way to demonstrate the relevance of Europe, and the case to continuously seek change and reform in Europe, but to do so from within.Q. Do you want Britain to remain a member of the EU and can you explain your reason(s)?336,000 reasons - the number of jobs in East Anglia alone which are dependent on Europe. Our businesses benefit by being able to export without restriction and to take advantage of trade agreements far more beneficial because of Europe’s combined economic weight in negotiations. We can’t combat climate change in Britain alone, nor illegal immigration, organised crime or drug trafficking. Avian flu, mad cow disease, foot and mouth are all health threats from across international borders to local people and to agriculture in my time as MEP, that couldn’t have been solved without European cooperation. We can’t make air travel safe by having different rules for when an aircraft takes off from a British airport, to those when it lands at its destination abroad. European fisheries policy has been controversial, but our fishermen want to work in foreign waters just as much as we come to common agreements for their European counterparts to fish in ours. Above all, Europe is not the ‘standardising’ caricature that Eurosceptics want you to believe. The EU remains a group of sovereign countries cooperating together only where we choose to do so, protecting and celebrating our different cultures, histories, languages and identities. I want my children to grow up in such a rich, outward-looking, diverse and tolerant society, which is why I firmly reject the narrow, backward-looking and frankly prejudiced case of Eurosceptics to threaten Britain’s EU membership. It has to be ‘in’.

Hot Weather Tips

• Move garden hutches and runs to shaded areas, or put a lightweight covering over to provide shade

• Ensure indoor cages, crates and hutches are out of direct sunlight

• Make water available from multiple sources (both indoors and outside)

• Check water sources throughout the day and top up as appropriate

• Apply sun block to areas where hair is thin such as tops of ears and noses (it is best to use products designed for children or sensitive skin, and you should always test the cream on a small area first and leave it for 24 hours to ensure your animal is not going to react to it)

• Leave windows open, fans going and air conditioning on inside, especially if you are leaving pets alone for any period of time

• Closing curtains can help pets to avoid direct sunlight indoors and keep temperatures down

• Clean out litter trays and bedding more frequently

• Ensure pets are protected against parasites to prevent infestation from fleas, ticks, mites and other nasties. Rabbits are included in this with fly strike being much more prevalent in hot weather

• Provide areas of shade in gardens out of direct sunlight

• Try to avoid exercising dogs during the midday sun. Instead take them to wooded/shaded areas or take them out in the early morning or late evening when the sun is weaker

• Take water with you when exercising dogs away from home and limit vigorous exercise such as ball games

• If you give your dog a toy that you stuff with food, do the night before with something moist and put in the freezer for a longer lasting, cooling treat

We hope these tips help you and your pet to enjoy the summer sun, and if you have any further questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.

The summer sun is something that we all look forward to enjoying, how-ever for pets the hot weather can be very unpleasant. So here are a few tips to help you keep your pets are as comfortable as possible on hot days.

LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY

There are two Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) that you may enter into. One deals with your Health and Welfare the other deals with your Financial Affairs. You may decide that you require one or both of these. The important criteria is that you are over the age of 18 years and have the mental capacity to know that you are giving to another person the right to step into your shoes and make decisions on your behalf. Unlike a General Power of Attorney, a Lasting Power of Attorney has to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before the Attorney has authority to act on your behalf.Health & Welfare Lasting Power of AttorneyYou may appoint one or more persons to act on your behalf either jointly or individually. The persons appointed will be able to look after• Your daily routine

• Medical Care• Moving to a care home• Your medical treatment both with your GP and in hospital This LPA may only be used if you are unable to make your own decisions.Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of AttorneyAgain, you may appoint one or more persons to act on your behalf either jointly or individually. The persons appointed will be able to look after• Paying your bills• Collecting your benefits/pension• Assisting you in selling your homeThis type of LPA may be used as soon as it is registered with the Court of Protection as long as you are happy for your Attorney to act on your behalf.

If you would care to discuss making either of these LPA’s one of our specialist lawyers would more than happy to talk you through the procedure.

Ten Years AgoTen years ago we had just lost Johnny Cash and Steve Jobs was still in charge of Apple (the company – not Gwyneth Paltrow’s baby). Blair and Bush were in power we were about to lose Christopher Reeve. Facebook was born, we still had confidence in banks and a property portfolio. Now some say we have no Cash, no Jobs and no Superman!

It is said that an accountant looks at the past, a solicitor the present, and a financial adviser looks to the future. So let’s think about 10 years from now. Think about how old you will be, whether you will be working, retired and what you would like to be doing with your time and finances.

Speculating is one thing, putting a plan to-gether is another – but actually committing to it and regularly reviewing your plan is where it becomes a reality. Things to consider include whether you will have any liabilities at that time e.g. a mortgage or further education costs. How will your health stand up, what will your retire-ment plans look like?

There is a great tool available to help – we call it

cash flow management, it is rather more dynamic than a spreadsheet on a computer screen, you can try out various scenarios to test whether you are likely to run out of money maintaining your standard of living by trying ‘what if’ scenarios.

A common request being ‘what if inflation goes up to 5% again’ and ‘what if I retire at age 60’?

Then you can play about with the rate of growth your investments and pension funds grow at and compare this with current expectations. The great thing is that the results are displayed in easy to understand graphs or pictures. The software I use is professional quality and can form the basis of an annual review as we work towards Later Life Advice – the area of advice that I specialise in.

If you would like some help shaping the next ten years – give me a call to arrange a free initial consultation. There are no guarantees in predict-ing the future, as we know from experience.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured on it.

The value of the investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.

enland poet John Clare described in 1827 how in August the village was silent, with dogs shut up, no child playing in the street, as everyone was in the noisy fields at harvest. (1) Lammas (loaf-mass) Day, the feast-day celebrating harvest on August 1st or 2nd is said to date back to 9th century King Alfred. There are many traditions and superstitions such as the first corn being used to make a corn dolly which was stored and buried at the new season’s planting. The first loaves baked from the harvest were blessed in church to celebrate the harvest safely in. The first harvest loaf was broken up and scattered in the corners of the barn where the harvest was stored. (2) Lammas is a Quarter Day when rent and taxes were collected. In places, the Fens were closed to cattle from early spring to summer and the Lammas meadows opened after the hay harvest. (3) August 19th 1912 saw the opening of March’s new Electric Palace, the grand, richly-decorated modern building facing the top of Broad Street. The year before, Mr Joseph Collingwood had bought Darthill House with its grounds at the north of Broad Street, where the car park now is, and built the Palace and its five shops on the corner of the site. (4) Great Britain declared war on Tuesday night August 4th 1914. Members of G Company who left March the next day for Cambridge, to await further orders, were given a ‘worthy send-off’. “The news that they were leaving quickly spread, and as the

morning advanced, the streets normally quiet at this period of the day, began to assume an unwontedly busy aspect. A start was made from the Drill Hall about eleven o’clock, and, preceded by the band, the men set forth for the station, large crowds witnessing this long-to-be-remembered march. The Company left 118 strong, no less than 19 recruits having offered themselves for service during the morning.” Speeches giving thanks and good wishes were given by Rev S. S. Walton, Mr F. D. Grounds, Mr T. P. Ogden and Capt. H. P. Sharman. The war had an immediate effect in March with rising prices, the closing of banks and a rush at the grocers’ shops to stock up on supplies. J. Pepperdine, Nene Parade Stores, March: ‘Special Notice! The grave events of the Moment and the Possibilities of Commerce being more or less Paralysed, make it necessary to inform the Public that it is impossible to carry on business under ordinary Conditions. We shall use our best endeavours to keep our Customers supplied, but can only accept and execute orders, from this date at open Prices. Assuring you of a continuation of our best Services’. (5)1. MEDIATION RESOLVING TRUST AND ESTATE DISPUTES

T he son of the artist, Lucian Freud has launched a legal battle to claim a share of his late father’s £95.5 million fortune. A large proportion of the estate was left to a secret trust run by Freud’s solicitor and daughter who are now refusing to reveal the instructions that were left to them as to how the trust funds were to be divided. The legality of the trust arrangement is being challenged in the High Court and only time will tell if the challenge is successful. Not many of us will find ourselves embroiled in a fight over a multi-million pound estate. However, even the smallest of estates can lead to acrimony between beneficiaries and family members. In this situation it may not always be necessary to become involved in lengthy and often costly litigation. If the parties are willing, mediation could hold the solution. Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process whereby the mediator (an independent third party) assists the parties involved to achieve their own settlement to the dispute. Confidentiality is key to the process. Nothing will be disclosed outside the confines of the mediation room. Discussions held between each party and the mediator are also confidential. A popular misconception is that the mediator acts as a judge. This is not the case. They may express their views and make suggestions but it is for the parties to reach their own settlement and any views that the mediator holds cannot be imposed upon them.

|Legal corner by Kieren Cross, Member (Probate)

What are the advantages of using a mediator?

Mediation can help preserve the assets held in the trust or the estate rather than having them swallowed up in litigation costs. Successful mediation can also avoid escalating family conflicts and preserve the relationships between the trustees and the beneficiaries. The privacy, informality and confidentiality of the process can also prove attractive as it avoids having “dirty linen washed in public”. It’s worth bearing in mind that the refusal by one party to attend mediation could lead to adverse cost consequences for that party should the matter ever proceed to court.

When to mediate?

Mediation should preferably take place before costs become disproportionate to the assets that are held in the trust or the estate. Parties might also find themselves wishing to opt for mediation in the middle of a lengthy and costly litigation providing, as it can do, a quick way to settle the matter. Mediation should also be considered early on in an attempt to restore relationships before the position of individuals become too entrenched. Generally it can be said that mediation is something which should be considered sooner rather than later.

Another local club, The Ship Inn of March, have also found the fish feeding well at Decoy and their last match on Yew Lake saw Shaun Stracan take top spot with 160lbs. Gavin Wright was second with 130lbs. On the rivers there are only a couple of clubs that run river matches this time of year and I spent a lot of my time at Tydd Gote, their club runs three matches a week on the North Level. They are on Sundays 12-5, Wednesdays 10-3 and 6-9 on a Thursday evening through the summer. I myself won the first evening match with 8lbs and second place went to Dave Sippitts with 3lbs 13oz. The following Sunday I was second, beaten by a single ounce by Colin Gibbons who finished with 7lbs 4oz. Other Sunday matches at Tydd have seen March couple Paul Constable and Carol Davis doing well, in one match Paul came first with 7lbs 12oz and Carol was second with 6lbs 13oz. In the next match Ian Benton came first with 19lbs, Carol came second with 10lbs 2oz and Paul was third with 8lbs. March angler John Rees had a good start to the season; he caught a personal best Perch on the Old Nene at Floods Ferry on his boat, it weighed 2lbs 2oz. Finally anybody with any news on catches or match results can contact me on 07970 673 439.

Tight Lines!

ith the new river season well underway I can report on some good catches locally. I myself started the season off on the 20ft Drain at Chain Bridge at 4am. My first four fish were Rudd and the largest went to 12oz, then I caught six Tench in a row and finally the Bream moved in and I had eight Bream to 5lbs. Also on the 20ft Alex Bates had an early start and had 33 Bream and two Tench to 5lbs, Dan Hall also found the Bream feeding well on this stretch. Also fishing well is the Shepperson Bridge area of the 20ft and plen-ty of fish have been coming out of the Old Nene running through March. Another place worth a visit is the 100ft river at Mepal, here the river is tidal and is moving all the time so the fish are hungry and at the moment it is full of Dace. In three hours one evening I had over 10lbs. The forty foot drain and the 16ft drain have seen some good sport, with plenty of Tench showing on both drains and at Chatteris John Roper has had a few Bream and Tench at the Pump Section. On the lakes both Decoy and Magpie Lake at Pidley are fishing well. On Magpie Lake, March Club and Townsend Angling Club had a good match with the top seven anglers netting over 100lbs each. Out in front with 168lbs was Tim Bates, who had Carp to 8lb, closely followed by Pete Church with 167lbs and Shaun Stracan with 130lbs.

A new 30 year lease to remain at the GER Sports Ground has been successfully negotiated; plans to build a new clubhouse have been approved, with building work is due to start later in the year, and a new management team of Chris Bartlett and Gino Aguis have been appointed for the 2014/15 season. Hares Chairman Phil White explained the reasons behind the appointment but remained coy about what targets the new duo had been set, he said: “We had five really good applicants but Chris and Gino really stuck out because they spoke about everything we were talking about in terms of where we want to progress over the next three years. So hopefully now on the pitch we should improve this coming year. “We’ve set targets. We know where we need to be, they know where we want them to be and the board will do everything we can to back them to get them to where they need to be.” He then described the plans for the new clubhouse and how it will be open to all saying: “In the new clubhouse we’ll have new changing facilities, a bar, a brand new kitchen, everything up to date. “Our plan is to start building this year so we’re really looking forward to it. And it will be there for the community, people keep saying to me ‘oh you’re building a football club’ but no we’re not just building a football club we’re building it for the

community. Everybody will be able to use it and hopefully people will come through the door and then watch the games and think ‘oh they’re not too bad’.” The new Thurlow Nunn First Division season kicks off on August 9th and Phil commented on how preparations for the new campaign are going he said: “I’ve popped down to see the players and everybody seems to be keen, but this time of year everybody’s keen so I think it’ll be end of July, early August before we know what we’ve got and what we haven’t got.” In addition to the first team, March Town has several other teams of various age groups and the numbers are rising, with several players progressing through the ranks. “It’s growing every time,” said Phil. “That’s the key and that’s why we keep talking about the new clubhouse, it will be nice to get everybody involved. So the club’s growing and going forward. Last year we had u-18s playing in our first team so they are making their way up. That’s the plan hopefully the u-16s will go into the u-18s next year and the u-18s play in the reserves and eventually we’ll have a home grown team, that’s what we want. “We’re not knocking players who want to come and play here, but if we’ve got home grown March people, March people come and watch.”

Regular EventsMusic at Georges1st Don’t miss out on talented singer Christian Smith, who engages with his audience to make sure they have a great night! He’s 20 & from Chatteris, and with his impressive range of accolades and media appearances, he’s a sensation for the Fenland market town.

2nd Hesh are a Rock Covers band playing hits from the 60’s to the present day! Come along and see them perform and enjoy a fun, energetic musical experience that you will find hard to forget.

9th Tallawah was formed out of a love for Reggae and the humble vibe of the music. Tallawah is Peterborough’s newest Reggae band made up of four tight, hardworking members. Although Reggae is their main fare, they mix it up with a few of their rock favourites including Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd, done in their own inimitable style!

16th Thunderhead is a five piece punk/indie rock band from Peterborough. Performing classic covers such as Teenage Kicks, Sex Pistols and The Misfits as well as more modern day tunes with their own songs thrown in too; it won’t be a night you will want to miss out on!

19th “Storm” are an established rock covers band based in Peterborough, with members of the band based right here in March. With a repertoire of gigs such as Headlining the BMF Rally, and a variety of other events, we know that they’ll make a splash in sleepy March.

23rd Derecho is a female fronted original rock band. Influences range from 60s pop through to punk and classic rock to modern day music. Having already attracted a wide audience, they are not something you want to miss out on!

29th Hush is a four piece classic rock band, fronted by a female singer. The members of the band are from right here in March often in the live music circuit around the area. They perform classic rock hits from the 60’s onwards, but not the same old songs that most bands play. Hush try to do a set containing 90% songs that you all know, but rarely ever hear, trapped within the confines of the past.

30th Sweet Revenge hail from Cambridgeshire and are a five piece Classic Rock covers band. They last played at Georges in 1995, and they’re back to show us what we’ve been missing! Heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, ZZ Top and many more, it certainly won’t be a night you want to miss out on!

New Rooms Launched at March Station

| Event round-up

Friends of March Railway Station (FOMRS) recently launched two newly refurbished rooms on platform two which will be available to the community for meetings, social events and one-off events. Cambridgeshire County Councillor Ralph Butcher officially declared the rooms open for use stating “What has been achieved here is fantastic.” FOMRS Chairman Adrian Sutterby was equally jubilant, he said: “I’m ecstatic, it’s absolutely fantastic. The rooms here were redundant and not being used so we decided it’d be a good idea to put them back into community use.”“If you’d seen what it used to be like where we

literally went through the floor and had to have it all completely redone, I think it’s turned out really well. I’m really satisfied.” He added: “From February this year it’s taken about five months to put these rooms back into use.” Formed in August 2009, Friends of March Railway Station are a small group of people whose aim is to improve the railway ‘gateway’ into March via the station for the pleasure, and delight of visitors and local commuters who use and pass through the station. To enquire about booking the rooms or to find out more about Friends of March Railway Station visit: www.fomrs.org.uk or Friends of March Railway Station Facebook page.
