Mother’s Day already! “Life doesn’t come with a manual. It comes with a mother” is

an old saying which springs to mind at this time of the year. We all need help in finding our way through all the various ups and downs of life, and there, right from day one has been that wonderful (sometimes), smiling (often) and loving (always) lady we are proud to call “Mum”.

This month, we include several “mum-related features” and

also look towards Easter, fast approaching at the end of the month. Our ever-popular Community Matters section seems to be bursting with news about mums raising money for various charities and schemes, which just makes me feel so proud to live in a small town where so many selfless individuals are forever thinking of others, and how they can be helped.

Finally, from all of us mums, thanks in advance for the flowers, chocolates, perfume and big hugs, as we try our hardest … without a manual!

Welcome to our March edition...

Let me just add my little offering, amongst all this Mother’s Day malarkey. By the time a

woman eventually realizes that her mother was always right, she has a daughter who thinks that she’s always wrong!

Another month, another issue, bulging with information and advice. Read about health issues, money-related and legal matters, computer scams, overseas destinations where you can tie the knot, how to join a

male-voice choir, bake an Easter treat or even train to become a teacher. Our school spotlight features Bourne Abbey Nursery, Rex Needle relates rifle-range reminiscences and Dena Edis is in the “Hot Seat”. Variety is indeed the key!

A continuing big thank-you to those who have contacted us over recent weeks, thanking us for information and advice given, but especially the tradesman who received three enquiries for potential work, within hours of “Discovering Bourne” hitting the doormat.

MUM’s

MARY, THE MOTHER OF JESUS.“The Virgin Mary” has long been depicted as a caring mother and a role model for everyone. She also plays an important role throughout Christian history in providing us with a female that’s right at the heart of events. Christianity, after all, can be a fairly male-dominated affair.

ROSE KENNEDY She buried five of her nine children, raised a president, (John F. Kennedy), two U.S. senators, and presided over one of the most famous families in American history-all with elegance and dignity. “I looked on child-rearing not only as a work of love and duty but as a profession that was fully as interesting and challenging as any honourable profession in the world,” Kennedy once said. When she died in 1995, at the age of 104, she had 28 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.

MARIE CURIE - With her husband, Pierre, Marie Curie was the pioneer in researching radioactivity. When he died suddenly, she refused a government pension and instead, took his place as a professor at the University of Paris. She was awarded a Nobel Prize for her work, then became the first person to win a second Nobel Prize, and she is the only Nobel Prize winner who is also the mother of another Nobel Prize winner, Irène Joliot-Curie.

MOTHER’S DAY is the one day when we take time to express our love and gratitude for the

women who have devoted their lives to making ours safe and happy. Some have been famous, most

are not, but all have been, and continue to be, special.

DEMI MOOREOne of Hollywood›s highest-paid actresses, the sassy Moore has combined her acting and business careers with a highly publicized role as a mother. Moore and ex-husband Bruce Willis have three daughters, Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah. Moore doesn’t go it alone, however. She is known for travelling with a substantial entourage, including nannies and personal trainers.

QUEEN ELIZABETH, THE QUEEN MOTHER In 1923, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married the second son of King George V and was the first commoner to legally marry into the royal family in several centuries. Their daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, were born in 1926 and 1930, respectively. When Elizabeth refused to leave England during the London Blitz in World War II, even enduring the bombing of Buckingham Palace, her spirit was an inspiration to many who continued to hold her in high regard until her death at the age of 101 in March 2002.

As our country’s much-lamented linguistic prowess continues its decline, alongside our apparent lusting for ever more adventurous foreign foods, there comes a point when action will be needed. No surprise then, that the Co-operative, (Remember ”It’s all at the Co-op …now”?) has collaborated with the Oxford English Dictionary to identify the top twenty most commonly mispronounced foreign foods, and provide a definitive guide. The Co-op has launched a training guide for its staff to assist customers, alongside shelf signs and notices at the check-out to help customers with the names.

There is a cautionary maxim, “If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it”, by which some diffident individuals seem to live their lives. Hopefully, the list taken from the Co-op guide and shown here, will encourage more people than ever before to discover the delights of, for instance, French fish stew, (Bouillabaisse), or Peruvian-style fish cured in citrus juice, (Ceviche).

What this guide does not go near, however, is the most intractable, and altogether British, dispute of them all: Is it scone, to rhyme with con, or scone to rhyme with cone?

“Keen-wah” or “Kwin-oh-a”? Here’s Your Answer!

“Bourne2play” raised the fantastic sum of £3,073.90 towards new play equipment on the Wellhead in Bourne at a charity band night on Saturday January 30th. Over two hundred guests danced along to covers band, “Children of the Revolution”, and enjoyed fish and chips provided by George’s Fish Bar. A raffle was held, with fabulous prizes donated by The Range Hair and Beauty, Burghley House, Adrian Dewey Photographers,

The Bull in Rippingale and Toft Golf Club. Anna Rogers, chairperson for Bourne2Play said: “The band was amazing and everyone said how much they enjoyed the evening. I’d like to say a big thank-you to those who supported the night buying tickets, helping with the organisation and donating prizes to the raffle.”

Bourne2Play has now raised £68,000 towards new play equipment and is calling on local businesses and charities

to help meet the remainder of the £116,000 needed to install a brand new play park. Anna Rogers said: “We’d like the park to be installed this year, but we have still got £48,000 to go. What we need now is for local businesses and charities to pull together to help make the new play park a reality.”

heidi’s New Battle – here’s how to helpBourne Rugby Club is hosting a Ladies Day on Easter Saturday, March 26th. This is a fun event for all the family in aid of Cancer Research. The highlight of the day will be a game of Touch rugby between “Team Heidi” versus “The Rest of the World” at 11am.

Less than five years ago, Bourne lady, Heidi Rock, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of thirty-one, she underwent a full range of surgical, chemo- and radiotherapy treatments and was cancer-free for a while. At the start of 2016, however, Heidi was told that the illness had returned and she is now starting more treatment and another fight. In between the two, she had been very healthy and had been part of the ladies Bourne Rugby keep-fit initiative, since its start over a year ago. Now, the mother of Katie (13) and Laura (11) is facing her biggest challenge yet, and this special day will be a chance

for everyone in the area to show their support for Heidi.

“Team Heidi” is an invitational side, but anybody is welcome to

play for the “Rest of the World”, no matter what their age or experience.

The purpose of the day is to get lots of women and girls (any age) playing a fun, non-contact sport. It will also, hopefully, raise awareness and lots of money for a charity, very close to all of our hearts.

If you’d like to play, donate, support or help to organise on the day, please get in touch with Mark Thomas, Bourne Rugby Club, on 07708352202, or at [email protected] .

Tell your mum, daughter and sister! See you on the 26th.

thank youDear Editor

Although it is quite a while since the Christmas issue of your magazine was published, I am writing to thank you for including the foodbank article. It was so poignant at that special time of year. We really hope that it made an impact and some of the new clients were as a result of that article.

Thank you again

charity curry casserole Lunch creates cash St Barnabas hospice in Bourne has benefitted to the tune of £1687 from a recent charity Lunch, held at Bourne abbey church hall. This amazing achievement came as a result of two couples, Yvonne and Taff Roberts, and Sue and John Fordham, harnessing the enthusiasm of several other willing volunteers to help with the lunch, along with a host of local businesses who donated a range of items to be auctioned and also raffle prizes. The inspiration for this fund-raising came from the recent tragic losses to cancer of close friend, Ashley Woolf, along with Sue’s father, the late and much-respected builder and fireman, Don Gelsthorpe.

Yvonne wishes to express her gratitude to everyone who contributed in any way, either from helping make the lunch happen, donating anything or by just being part of what was one fabulous and memorable afternoon.

Walking the Macmillan Way is Yvonne’s Next challengetwo hundred and ninety miles in three weeks is the tall order facing Bourne ladies, Yvonne Roberts and Lilian Vaughan, along with their friends, Christine Caston from Rippingale and her sister, Marie Caston from Deeping. On Easter Monday, March 28th, this intrepid quartet will strike off from the top of Boston Stump and follow the Macmillan Way across the heart of the English Midlands, arriving on the south coast, at Abbotsbury in Dorset on April

14th. Yvonne’s husband, Taff, will be doing the difficult bit, ensuring that he drives the support caravan to the right spot each day, to rendezvous with them and provide crucial moral support! The aim is to raise a stash of cash for the fantastic Macmillan Nurses. Please contact Yvonne on 393219, if you can help her on her way, (or if you just want to know what’s next on this amazing lady’s fund-raising calendar for 2016!)

farewell Jenny Mayit’s been almost five years since Jenny May richardson and her daughter emily opened Jenny May home interiors on North Street Bourne. In that time, many of the loyal customers using this most popular of shops have become Jenny’s friends. These face-to-face relationships are what Jenny will miss the most when her shop closes for the last time in April. North Street will be all the poorer for having lost this quality interiors, textiles and

giftware outlet. We wish Jenny and Emily all the best for the future.

Keeping motivation on a healthy eating routine or diet is not easy. Whilst you may have vowed that you were going to relinquish comfort foods and take up exercise more regularly, the reality of maintaining motivation in the longer term can be a challenge for the best of us.

Healthy Habits to Improve your Looks - Part

| Health by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

This month and next, Claire Saunders from Renu, will be sharing her top Healthy Habits to keep you on track, and make 2016 the year to love the way you look!

Start as you mean to go onYour first meal of the day needs to be lean protein and good fats. Ditch the carb- loaded cereals and breads and go for eggs, smoked salmon, avocado or make a Spanish omelette from last night’s left-over greens that you can cut into slices to eat on the run.

Eat the first meal of the day whenever you like - you don’t have to eat the minute you get up. Focus on the food quality.

Plan for successPlan your meals ahead. It’s cool these days to take your food with you in your Tupperware box. Take a few minutes each evening to prepare your food for the next day, or better still, batch cook at the weekend, so that you can stay on track all week. Buying snacks and lunches out is an expensive and fattening habit. This time of year, slow cookers are great and mean you can eat something substantial before you reach for those fattening snacks. Try using frozen vegetables to save time and money; they are also great for making quick and nutritious soups.

Create a weekly meal plan and a

For many, the unknown can be daunting and become a reason not to do something. Each year, more and more people decide to see an osteopath, but what exactly happens there? Please note that the title ‘osteopath’ is protected by law, and it is illegal for anyone to call themselves an osteopath, unless they are registered with the General Osteopathic Council, which sets and promotes high standards of competency, conduct and safety. Our licence to practise needs to be renewed each year.

A Visit to the Osteopath – Wise Words of Comfort

Typically, a first appointment will last between forty-five minutes and an hour. We ask in confidence about your general health, any medication being prescribed and your medical history, including any previous episodes, illnesses or operations. You need not be alone, if the company of another person would benefit you in any way.

Next, we look at how you move; asking you to actively perform certain movements typically while standing, and we observe the effect on your condition, posture and mobility. Then, whilst lying on the examination couch, we look at your passive movements where we assess the health of your joints, ligaments and tissues by using a highly developed sense

of touch, called palpation. We do this to check the range and quality of their movements and often more importantly, how they interact together. Sometimes, we need to perform other special tests such as testing your reflexes or taking your blood pressure.

By combining all of this information, we then formulate a diagnosis which we will explain to you. If, for some reason, you needed someone more specialist, or we suspect a more serious condition that osteopathic treatment is not suitable for, we would always refer you with a letter to someone appropriate, which may be your G.P. or local hospital.

Before treatment begins, we discuss the treatment benefits, any risks, the likely expectations, how many

sessions are needed and your consent for us to treat you.

Treatment is hands-on, and involves skilled manipulation of the spine and joints, and massage of soft tissues. The type and intensity of treatment will vary depending on you and your tolerances, so it remains comfortable.

Finally, we will tell you about any self-help measures and advice on exercise or stretching, to assist your recovery and prevent recurrence or worsening of symptoms.

The Wellhead practice was the first of its kind in Bourne, now into our fourth year. We now have a team of eight practitioners, covering six different areas of expertise. If you have any enquires, we would be happy to hear from you.

eight months since taking the brave step to open her first salon, courtney Marvel can look back on some very good foundations that have been laid for future success. She is also already considering the possibility of taking on an extra beauty therapist to cope with the expected demand, created as winter gives way to the warmer and brighter months ahead.

Bourne resident, Courtney co-owns the business in Wherry’s Lane, with her mother, Sharon, whilst six-year old daughter, Tiana, is already longing to become part of the operation! Courtney has always sought to be self-employed in the beauty profession, since having trained at Peterborough Regional College. Work in a Stamford salon was followed by a spell from her home, and as a mobile beautician.

Fortunately, she was able to bring along a considerable client base with her when her Beauty Box opened last June, and since then, her regular numbers are being steadily boosted as the word spreads.

The Beauty Box is where you can access a wide range of treatments in Courtney’s light and spacious salon, with its separate private treatment room. The Art Deco style with bold black and white stripes and duck-egg blue to highlight the fixtures, creates a classy but comfortable feel.

The treatments offered are many and varied, from Jessica Geleration manicures and pedicures, electrolysis, waxing, threading and massage, through skin spray tanning, eyelash extensions and tints to the recently introduced Skinbreeze Facials. Courtney is proud to be a full stockist of “Make Up by HD Brows”, along with Jessica Geleration products. She uses the prestigious Sterex brand for her electrolysis treatments, whilst her Nouveau range of lashes is a popular, quality choice.

As we slowly start to head towards the summer, Courtney is eager to remind existing and potential clients that she will be offering “Prom packages” during July, alongside a “Bridal package” for when those wedding bells start to chime!

Are you taking your mum out for dinner this Mother’s Day? Or maybe you’re the mum being pampered for a change. Either way, with summer just around the corner, there’s no need to let your Mother’s Day celebrations derail your efforts to get into that bikini this year.

One local mum who will be celebrating in style this Mother’s Day is Lisa McDougall of Haconby, who has just shed six and a half stones with Slimming World. Lisa, now at her target weight, says, “Eating out doesn’t mean you have to miss out – just make sensible choices and you can keep your weight- loss on track. A Sunday roast fits in perfectly with the Slimming World plan, as all lean meat and vegetables are free foods, which means you can pile up your plate and enjoy!”

Lisa attends the Monday Slimming World Group in Bourne, run by Jo Bradford. Since joining in April 2015, both of her daughters have also been inspired to join, and are successfully following in mum’s footsteps. Lisa says, “As a mum, I always want what’s best for my family. I knew my girls were unhappy about their weight, as I had been, and I knew that the best way to help them was to take them along to Slimming World with me. My youngest daughter has now lost three and a half stones, and my eldest daughter, Abbie (pictured with Lisa), who only joined three weeks ago, has already lost over a stone.”

We all felt really nervous about joining, but we found that the people were so lovely and the atmosphere so

warm, that it has now become like a second family to us. I wouldn’t dream of missing a week, as it keeps me motivated and I like to help and support other members with their weight loss.

“Losing weight hasn’t just changed my looks”, she continues. “It has changed my life. My health has improved and I’m much more

confident. Now, my girls are looking happy again, as they lose their weight and that makes me one happy mum”.

Lisa’s daughter Abbie says, “It’s still early days for me but, having already lost over a stone in three weeks, I feel confident that I can carry on and get to my target, like mum. She has been a great inspiration to us – she always encourages and supports us and we couldn’t do it without her.”

Hi, my name’s Susie and I am the owner of “Prestige Lengths”. We

specialise in keratin fusion bonded extensions and micro-ring ring bonds. The hair which we use is luxury, double-drawn Indian Remy hair with “cuticle correct”, or luxury Russian hair, depending on the client’s budget.

Keratin bonds are the most durable and suitable for most hair types, whilst the micro rings are best suited to slightly thicker hair. Hair extensions won’t damage your own natural hair, as long as you follow the aftercare guide. Both types of extensions are

easily removed but this must be done by a professional. Hair extensions are a great confidence boost, especially for those whose hair is fine or if it doesn’t grow very long. They’re great for adding volume to long hair or adding length and volume to fine, shorter hair.

Consultations are free and are available at the Maxey Hair Salon in Wherry’s Lane, Bourne, every Friday.

tip of the MoNth

When blow-drying your hair, you just tip your head upside down and blast the roots until almost dry, then blow-dry as normal. this will add fabulous volume to your hair.

Did you know it’s not just physical exertion and poor posture that cause tight muscles in the neck and shoulders which can be painful, restrict movement and lead to headaches?

Tension and stress-related headaches

Stress can also have a massive effect on us, not just mentally, but physically too. Our body’s reaction to stress is to prepare the body for movement, a basic primitive “fight or flight” response to danger. As we don’t tend to do either of these, the result is a gradual build-up of tension in the muscles, which is something we all experience at some point in our lives … that is unless you have found the secret to a stress-free life!

HOW DOES MASSAGE HELP?After warming up the area, with gentle massage techniques, I then start to work a little harder and deeper on the tight areas. This breaks down the adhesions between the muscle fibres which restrict the muscle from working as fully as they should. It’s not always possible to remove all the tension in one treatment, but you will feel a noticeable improvement. The massage also triggers the release of endorphins into the body, which basically make us feel good. The word endorphin comes from shortening endogenous (from the body) and morphine (morphine-like substance) - it’s a self-made happy drug.

Just taking an hour out of a busy day for a massage can also be relaxing in itself, no disturbances, just a therapist releasing the tension from your body. I also use gentle stretching and a technique called “Cranial Base Release”, which involves applying a little pressure to just below the base of the occipital bone at the back of the head with my fingertips, which press into the two small dimples either side of the spine where it attaches to the skull. This technique is great for releasing tension in the deeper neck muscles without causing any discomfort.

WILL A DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE HURT? I will ask during the massage if the pressure is too much, or if you would like more, so you have full control over the treatment; this will also depend on age and any medical conditions. Most clients prefer a slightly firmer

repetition creates habits. for example, nail biting and addictions all start with that first nibble, drink, drag or bet. these are regularly repeated, until a habit is formed and a need has been created. You have lost control over a part of yourself that is causing your negative behaviour. the good news is that you had the inner resources to create the inappropriate behaviour and, logically, anything that your mind creates, your mind can also dispose of, if you really want to change. You can teach your subconscious mind to let go of your old unwanted thoughts and behaviours and replace them with healthy, helpful ones instead.

Many people tend to associate hypnotherapy only with stopping smoking and weight control. Many are unaware that they are only the tip of the iceberg. Clinical and Cognitive Behaviour Hypnotherapy can also help with:

Performance anxiety, Stress management, Reducing blood pressure, Anxiety, Depression, Digestive problems, Addictions, Eating disorders, Sleep problems, Panic attacks, Exam nerves, Phobias, I.B.S, Pain control, Hypnodontics (relating to dental treatment) Public speaking, Confidence building, Anger management, Bereavement issues, Post-traumatic stress recovery, Obsessive compulsive disorder, Sexual problems and more...........

If you are unsure whether hypnotherapy can help your particular problem, then please phone for advice. So, instead of saying to yourself, “I wish I didn’t.......”, make March the month when you do something about it. Why put up with ‘IT’, when hypnotherapy may get rid of ‘IT’.

Behaviour is a symptom and not the cause and is expressed in many different ways. It reflects how we feel, our beliefs and values, and the aftermath of past experiences. Of course, behaviour is not always negative, although we do tend to focus on poor behaviour and sometimes ignore the good. Negative behaviour though, does affect our health, wealth and happiness. If we are stressed or unhappy, we are more likely to suffer from low self-esteem, lack of confidence, poor motivation, low mood, irritability and so on.

If you are an employer, you will be aware that a positive workforce is a productive workforce. It is important therefore, that staff feel that the company cares enough about their wellbeing to offer support, and thereby the opportunity to develop and progress. One of the key areas for improvement in many of us is motivation. It is often difficult to motivate ourselves and even more difficult if we are called upon to motivate others, such as a workforce, colleagues or school and college students. There are, however, effective strategies that can be employed to motivate

| Your Health advice from Caroline Mentzel, Behaviour management consultant

Changing behaviour for goodWhen we hear the words “behaviour management”, we tend to think of naughty children. However, “behaviour” applies to all of us.

ourselves and others, thus engaging a positive approach and feel-good outcome.

These days too much to do and too little time puts everyone under pressure.

Parents struggling with their children’s behaviour are often at their wits’ end, wondering how to bring about the changes they desire. Children can be demanding and attention seeking, and their behaviour can seriously undermine family harmony. What can you do if your child refuses to co-operate, has tantrums, becomes aggressive, won’t communicate? Again, there

are simple effective strategies to address these issues and develop a positive rapport within the family.

Behaviour can be modified by altering your response to that behaviour. It will then begin to change in reaction to your new approach. Couple this with acknowledgement of positive behaviour and the recipe is almost complete.

Having worked with behaviour modification for over thirty years within education, health and corporate organisations, I felt I could be more effective working for myself. I now have a business called www.helpucope.co.uk which provides behaviour management services to individuals, groups and corporate clients.

Why struggle to cope, when you can achieve success?

Method1. Roll out one-third of the almond paste. Using the base of the cake tin as a guide, cut out an 18 centimetre round.

2. Grease the cake tin and line the bottom and side with greaseproof paper.

3. Combine all the cake ingredients in a bowl. Beat well until thoroughly blended. Spoon half of the cake mixture into the prepared tin and smooth the surface. Top with the round of almond paste.

4. Spoon the remaining cake mixture on top and level the surface.

5. Bake in a preheated oven at 150°C/gas mark 2 for two and a quarter hours or until golden brown and firm to the touch.

6. Cover the top of the cake with greaseproof paper if it is browning too quickly. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then remove from the tin, and leave to cool completely.

7. Warm the jam and use to brush the top of the cake.

8. To decorate the cake, roll out half of the remaining almond paste and use the tin to cut out an 18 centimetre round. Put on top of the jam and crimp the edges. Roll the remaining almond paste into 11 even-sized balls. Place around the edge of the cake, attaching them with egg white.

9. Brush the tops of the balls and the almond paste with egg white. Place under a hot grill for one to two minutes, until the balls are golden.

this exciting new project for the award-winning peterborough Male Voice choir, is a recruitment initiative which aims to attract new members, while at the same time raising money for a very worthy – and specifically male – cause, prostate cancer uK. Launching in april, the project will recruit forty local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none!) who, over twelve weeks, will rehearse to perform with peterborough Male Voice choir in a gala charity concert at the Broadway theatre in June.

Under the direction of William Prideaux - a nationally recognised authority on the male voice genre - Peterborough Male Voice Choir has a track record of highly successful, charity fundraising, recruitment projects. It all started with Sing for Heroes which recruited over one hundred men in 2010, and again in 2011, culminating in a sensational sell-out concert with Leslie Garrett at the Broadway Theatre. Between them, Sing for Heroes and Sing for Life – run by women’s choir Peterborough Voices - have raised almost £30,000 for charity in the last five years.

But it’s not all about the singing, or even about the fundraising; there’s a fantastic social scene, too - after all, not every choir can boast its own bar in its own theatre! Ultimately, it’s about a group of men getting together in a shared enterprise, which of course is the idea behind Men United, and why the charity seemed such a good fit for the project.

| Groups

“MeN uNiteD iN SoNg” – Guys, here’s your big chance!

William Prideaux says “It’s a real privilege to work with such a cracking bunch of blokes. They take their music making as seriously as their socialising. There’s a real camaraderie among them and a tight-knit aspect to the group makes them a force to be reckoned with”.

Men United In Song kicks off with introduction sessions at the Broadway Theatre on Friday April 1st (7-9pm) and Saturday April 2nd (10am-1pm). Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, just a willingness to get stuck in and give it a go. Mark Currier, Chairman of PMVC, says “We’re not looking for a Gary Barlow or an Alfie Boe, just guys who want to come along and enjoy singing together. Until you’ve tried it you can’t understand the buzz singing can bring. We’re not looking for 100 percent in musicality, but 100 per cent in enthusiasm”.

for further information contact Jo on 01733 425194 or email [email protected]

rehearsals will be at the Broadway theatre on thursday evenings from 7.45-9.45pm, starting on thursday april 7th.

Planning a Wedding? What about a Barn near Bourne?

Nestling away from Morton’s busy high Street, in the beautiful grounds of the grange, and overlooking an open meadow, sits a recently

renovated threshing barn, dating back to 1760.

With its wide range of modern appliances in a spotless, well-stocked kitchen, this building can provide the ideal venue for any number of functions. add a marquee – and you have the perfect location for that wedding reception, anniversary party or any other special party or reunion you may have in mind.

Proud owner, Mary Richardson, has been hiring out the barn for five years, gaining a sound reputation within the local area of South Lincolnshire. She feels that the beautiful building, (with its open-beamed ceiling and walls tastefully decorated and exhibiting some, typically rural objects) creates that necessary feeling of “being somewhere very special”. Include the modern kitchen, with its fridges, dishwasher and oven, toilet facilities, (with disabled access), and a wood-burning stove in the large reception area, then you can soon appreciate its true potential.

For a wedding reception, (for which the large area available for car parking would be a real benefit), Mary recommends the use of the barn itself for the catering, bar and dancing area, whilst the addition of a marquee, abutting the north side, with access through double doors, would provide ample seating accommodation for around one hundred guests

The 2016 “season” runs from April 1st until September 30th and most week-ends are, as yet, still available. Mary does advise, however, that any enquiries by interested parties should be made as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

> full details, regarding costs and availability of this beautiful barn, are available from Mary richardson on 01778 570233.

| Spotlight on Schools

The Bourne Abbey Kindergarten, Nursery and Reception form the “Early Years Foundation Stage” at Bourne Abbey C. of E. Primary Academy, which is situated on Abbey Road, in the heart of Bourne. Our Kindergarten offers sessional and all-day care (during term time) for children aged from two to four years, the Nursery offers places for 15 funded hours per week to three and four year old via a variety of session options and the Reception classes are for four and five year olds.“Wrap around care” is available through fee-paying sessions at our Breakfast Club, Kindergarten, Kids Club and Holiday Club. The three “Early Years” settings work very closely together to ensure all children receive the best possible start to their school life, and have secure foundations for later learning. Please answer the following questions:Do you want your child’s individual care, learning and development to be of the highest possible standard, delivered by an Early Years teacher and a skilled team of committed professionals?Do you want you, your child and Nursery to set off together on an incredible, exciting learning journey with adventures, new discoveries and lots of fun?If you have answered “Yes!” to the above questions, then Bourne Abbey C of E Primary Academy Nursery could be for you and your child! Here at Nursery we believe that children flourish when the home and nursery work closely together, to ensure individual

children’s needs are met. Our team strive to provide a warm, caring and stimulating environment in order to capture children’s interest and enthusiasm for their learning. We aim to form firm foundations for young children’s care, learning and development and follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework that sets out the standards for all early years providers.Personal, Social and Emotional development permeates through everything we do, as children need to be provided with experiences and support to develop self - confidence and self - awareness, form good relationships with other children and adults, and have the skills to manage their feelings and behaviour. With this in mind, our Nursery is set up to provide children with amazing opportunities to learn through their play, (such as role-play and “small world play” which captures and develops their imagination), alongside mathematics and literacy opportunities, to lay foundations for their reading and writing. Children learn about the world around them and use technology, such as the interactive screen, to support their learning.Creative play, using media and assorted materials gives children the opportunity to explore, experiment, design and reflect on their creations. Our outdoor area offers a curriculum including all of the above, and it has recently been redeveloped to offer children of all abilities a range of challenges in their physical development. We are currently taking applications for children born between 1st September 2012 and 31st August 2013. Applications close 28th February 2016 and forms can be obtained by calling the school on 01778 422163 or emailing [email protected]

Plant shallots, onion sets and first early potatoes by the end of the month: it is also your last chance to sow garlic. If you want to grow asparagus, now is

the time to prepare your bed and plant the crowns by digging a trench twelve inches deep, adding some well-rotted manure, making a four inch ridge at the base, and spreading the roots of the crown over the ridge. Then replace the soil, leaving the tips just visible. Water in and add mulch. Don’t forget to leave the asparagus for two years before actually harvesting –it’s well worth the wait!

Now is a good time to prepare your beds for later planting, by removing any weeds that have survived the winter or are starting to regrow, raking the soil thoroughly and applying fertilizer. Keep the weeds at bay: with warmer days and more daylight, the weeds will begin to grow and it is advisable to dig out weeds such as bindweed and couch grass. To get rid of emerging weeds, hoe regularly.

Don’t forget to feed your over-wintered crops such as onions, kale, spring cabbage - use blood, fish and bone meal, chicken manure or seaweed–based organic fertiliser. Also herbs, such as rosemary and sage, will benefit from a good trim, and chives and mint can be propagated by dividing and re-planting them.

Well, hopefully, the weather may be improving now, but don’t be too optimistic! At least the days are getting longer and, with the extra light, more time can be spent in the allotment, sowing and preparing beds for the new crops. Soil temperature is paramount; it should be between seven and ten degrees Celsius and, although on some sunny spring days it may feel warm, the soil may be too cold for sowing. To encourage the soil to warm up, you can cover it in polythene, or use cloches. March can be a busy month for sowing, particularly indoors, (aubergines, chillies and peppers) indoors or in heated greenhouses, (brassicas, such as Brussels, sprouting broccoli and cabbages). Cabbages can be given a head start by sowing the seeds under cover and planting on, when all frost risk has passed. Early varieties of carrot, beetroot, spring onions, peas and broad beans can be sown into the open ground.

Which heating system is right for you?

The type of heating system you choose can be limited by many factors - the location of your property, the size of it, the current system in place and of course the budget you have to make improvements.

For most home owners, replacing an old boiler with a new “A” rated energy efficient boiler could be the most cost effective way of heating their homes more efficiently; doing this alone could save over £300 a year on heating bills.

Replacing hot water systems, upgrading radiators and fitting energy saving controls can all also have an impact on the money you need to spend on heating.

One of the most recent innovations is the remote heating control systems. These allow homeowners to control their heating via their smartphone from anywhere and at any time! This gives ultimate flexibility and ensures you maintain the maximum efficiency of your heating system at all times. In fact, we are so impressed with this new piece of technology we are fitting them for free on all new domestic boiler installations.*

There are, of course, several other renewable options which will not only heat your home more efficiently, but will also offer a pay-back in the form of tax free cash payments from the government.

Biomass Boilers are popular

Over 50% of the average household spend on fuel bills is used to provide heating and hot water. Having an efficient heating system could help you to make significant savings on your household bills, as well as reducing your carbon footprint and ultimately improving your home.

PRInceeneRgy can advise you on the most suitable heating system for your home, and provide a free, no-obligation quotation tailored to your specific requirements. No hidden extras – no hard sell. Call us today on 0345 600 7 800. *Terms and conditions apply

with off-grid properties, and are an especially good investment for larger properties where the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments will be higher and provide a good return on investment.

Air Source Heat Pumps are another popular renewable technology; these are suitable for many properties and can be fitted alone or alongside conventional heating systems to reduce gas or oil bills. Again, these qualify for RHI payments and are a solid investment.

Solar PV panels are still a popular choice to help reduce energy bills and, when fitted with a small piece of technology called an “i-boost”, they can help to reduce your water heating costs quite substantially. These too qualify for a tax free government payment, and while that is lower than we have seen previously, it still offers a good incentive for those considering solar.

Solar Thermal is another option to assist with reducing energy bills; this works by using the sun’s energy to heat water which can be used directly in your home. This technology is also eligible for the RHI payments and is suitable to be used alongside your current heating system.

Words from the Mayor

Thank you to those of you who have commented favourably on my reminiscences in the last edition of “Discovering Bourne”. I trust that it provided a bit of variety to my frequent messages about my “Mayoral Charities”. However, those charities remain, namely the Willoughby School, Dementia Support South Lincolnshire and Multiple Sclerosis, and money is still needed!

But it’s to our local community that we will be turning this month. Following the Quiz Evening at Dyke Village Hall on February 27th, there will be a similar opportunity for you to boost Bourne Abbey Church Hall funds with a Quiz Night in the Church Hall on Saturday, March 5th at 7.00pm. Details are available from Mrs. A. Northen on 01778 423353.

On March 19th, there will be an evening of Bingo at Dyke Village Hall, eyes down at 7.30pm. and, by popular request, we will be having a second Beetle Drive during the afternoon of April 9th at Bourne Abbey Church Hall, starting at 2.15pm.

My last ‘big’ event will be a ‘Lancashire Night’ at the Corn Exchange on Saturday April 2nd. Further details will appear in next month’s issue of “Discovering Bourne”. Tickets are £18.50 and can be obtained from the Town Clerk 01778 425123, or from me 01778 425438.

If you require more information about the evening, contact me at [email protected]. Flat caps are not compulsory and, sadly, ferrets will have to be left outside!

There are a number of people in Bourne who put their heart and soul into representing the town in a positive way, seeking to make it a better place to live. Trevor Holmes, who died recently, was one such person. I worked alongside Trevor on the Council until last May, and I cannot say that we always saw eye to eye about every issue; it would be a very strange Council if we did have constant unanimity. But I can confirm that he sought to represent the very best interests of our town in all the multifarious roles that he performed. His love for Bourne was reflected in the time and effort he devoted to it over many years. No matter what the issue under discussion, he could be relied upon to bring in his own individual brand of humour, with his almost mischievous little smile. Bourne is a better place for his commitment and conscientious dedication. God Bless Trevor.

council NewsThe news this month starts on a sad note, with the untimely death of ex-Mayor and Councillor, Trevor Holmes. Trevor held a Council seat from May 1999 up until the elections last May, when he opted to stand down. He was a very colourful character and ensured that his feelings on matters close to his heart were clearly spelt out to his fellow Council members. He was a talented and deeply conscientious man with an honest and gentle spirit. He was an excellent Councillor who had a depth of knowledge and experience that will be sorely missed. Our thoughts go to his adoring wife Pam and the rest of the family.

the week-end of March 4th, 5th and 6th sees the much-heralded ‘clean for the Queen’ initiative, in readiness for the Queen’s 90th Birthday. We have had interest shown by various local organisations, including the staff of Bakkavor who wish to participate in a general tidy- up of the neighbourhood; anyone interested in joining in with our efforts, please contact either the town clerk or his assistant on Bourne 426123, or e-mail [email protected].

Going hand-in-hand with this, the Town Council will form a working group to assist with the town’s ‘Bourne in Bloom’ effort. The aim of the campaign is to improve and regenerate the local environment, through the planting of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping, conservation and recycling projects, and to sweep away the eyesores that blight our streets, such as litter and graffiti. Again, anyone who would like to join the team, should contact the Town Clerk or his assistant on Bourne 426123 or e-mail [email protected].

the parish of Bourne Neighbourhood plan committee are recommencing work on a plan for the future, and you can expect to see exciting news over the next few months. the committee will be engaging with as many people and groups of the parish as possible, and ensuring that their views on the future of the community are made known.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Bourne will be holding their second big fundraising event on April 2nd, at the Corn Exchange, in the shape of ‘A Reet Good Do’, a Lancashire evening. The Mayor’s charities are Multiple Sclerosis, South Lincs Dementia Support and The Willoughby School; further details can be obtained from the Town Clerk on Bourne 426123.

Easter is a time when Christians reflect on the resurrection of Christ. In the Christian world, Easter is the holiest and oldest of all Christian festivals. It is also the climax and centre of a liturgical year where all holy days point.

Easter is the anniversary of Christ’s resurrection and should be commemorated on the same day every year. So why is there no constant date with Easter?

The date for Easter celebration is computed by the church with the help of astrology. It is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. It is dependent on the cycle of the moon, and the Vernal Equinox.

The early church fathers wanted to keep the observance of Easter in correlation with the Jewish holiday, Passover. The Jewish holiday calendar is based on solar and lunar cycles.

The First Council of Nicaea (325 AD) established the date

of Easter as specifically “The first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal or Spring Equinox”. The Vernal Equinox is, of course, the first day of the zodiac sign of Aries.

So, the date of Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal or Spring Equinox.

Can’t we just pluck a fixed date out of the air and agree on it?

Both governments and churches have tried to do that. Secularists have suggested that Easter should fall on the second Sunday of April each year. The World Council of Churches in 1997 suggested replacing the current equation-based system with direct astronomical observation.

Even where there is notional agreement, implementation is another matter. In Britain, an Easter Act was passed in 1928, fixing the holiday as ‘the first Sunday after the second Saturday in April’. The law remains on the statute

book, but it has never been enforced. There are too many contradictory influences brought to bear. It seems that Easter is set to remain the original moveable feast.

Have you ever wondered why Easter Sunday is celebrated on a different date each year?

WhAT’S all that about ThEN?

The Other B.B.C. The Bourne

Business Chamber

THE BOURNE BUSINESS CHAMBER – an insight into the other B.B.C. (Article by Serenity Crane)

The Bourne Business Chamber held its February meeting recently, with over thirty members present. The group comprises a wide cross-section of the business community from in, and around, Bourne. The individuals who attend are full of ideas, enthusiasm and are most inspirational. There seemed to be a very strong theme throughout the evening. That is to say that everyone felt very passionate about their own business, and other activities in which they are engaged.

Many of the group are involved in running voluntary activities and also raising money for a variety of different charities. It would be very difficult to mention all of the activities but, at the start of the evening, each person present, and representing a business, gives a short talk about their own sphere of activity. Tea and biscuits are served first and, once everyone settles down, the Chairman (Paul Ross) brings the room to order.

Paul has a passion for the Bourne Business Chamber and he has incredible skill and enthusiasm which he has brought to the group for the last five years as

Chairman. Represented on this particular evening were aspects from all kinds of businesses from writing, to health and fitness, to fitted kitchens and mental health. Utilities, the Red Cross, beauty therapy, computers, solicitors and the police are just some of the diverse businesses covered.

The annual membership is £40 per year and all the technical advice you will ever need is at hand. Joanne Dolby gave an interesting talk about how she came to be running Joanne’s Bookwork Services and the police representative showed a film highlighting the increasing dangers of scams. Notices are read out about all sorts of activities taking place, including the Classic Car and Motorbike show on June 19th, at the Wellhead and on West Street, with the Carnival and all the fun of the fair.

Why not join? It costs only £40 per year, and you could be soon be opening up an entirely new social and business network. Interested? … then contact Paul Ross, look at the website on www.bournebusiness.co.uk, or look on Facebook for the BBC (Bourne Business Chamber).

Decisions, Decisions, DecisionsInvesting money is never an exact science. Approach five different Financial Advisers and you are likely to get five different answers, ranging from those who represent a single investment or insurance company or bank, through to those who will build a portfolio bespoke to your individual circumstances.

Single company (or bank) advisers have usually access to products and funds from their own provider, or are tied to a specific insurance company; their investment offering may have access to some third party managers but this will be restricted, and it is very likely that the recommendation will be for a managed fund. With this, they pass responsibility for the investment to a fund manager who will look to meet the needs of thousands of individuals invested in his fund.

An Independent Financial Adviser may opt to use a model portfolio approach, where they will fit you into one of their pre-built portfolios, usually dependent upon your attitude to risk and possibly timescales. Others will look at your individual circumstances and potential income and capital requirements and select a number of investment funds to suit your individual needs. Only through gaining a detailed understanding of your requirements and current situation will an adviser be able to devise a strategy which meets your own

unique circumstances. This strategy then needs to be maintained and amended as appropriate; regular reviews with your adviser are crucial to any investment evolving with you.

This will partly be down to whether you are prepared to pay a fee for ongoing advice and reviews, and the amount you have to invest, as well as your long term needs; for example, it is obviously more expensive to run a fully bespoke portfolio than to simply hand it on to a single fund manager to run.

When constructing a portfolio for an investor, the key is conducting in-depth research into historic performance and volatility (and the relationship between the two). Whilst short-term performance can be very appealing, we believe a pedigree of long-term, consistent returns is a much more reliable indicator in delivering acceptable outcomes to investors.

Our job is to sift through the mountains of data which exist, recommending only those funds which pass our rigorous standards.

In most cases, the most successful portfolio builders show their worth in falling markets. It is easy to make money when all the assets are rising - it is much more difficult to minimize losses when things are against you. We say that the easiest way of making money is not to lose it in the first place - it may not be as exciting as chasing top performing funds, but long-term, you will be better off!

So it’s obvious that not one solution fits all circumstances, but you should at least visit an adviser who can offer all the options. There are obviously shades of grey in between the options outlined above, and a good adviser will work with you to find a pathway that suits you, rather than leading you along the wrong one!

a local physiotherapist has embarked upon a fascinating journey into the world of writing and publishing books. Sixty-five year old, alan crane, who runs twenty acre Spa, between Bourne and Spalding with his wife Jackie, assumes the name Serenity crane when writing.

Alan was inspired to write “The Weasel and The Woodpecker” after seeing an image of a woodpecker on a weasel’s back, and two other books with equally fanciful titles, “The Antelope and the Anatolian Shepherd Dog” and then “The Butterfly and The Black Fruit Fly”, were soon to follow, all of which are now available as e-reads.

Alan, who set up “British Breaktime Books” to produce both his own work, and that of other writers, describes the first book as “an older child’s novel that will have family appeal”.

To call Alan’s life, thus far, “colourful” must be the understatement of the year. He spent twenty-five years in the Army, during which time he trained to become a physiotherapist and qualified as a teacher. He and Jackie then started their own multi-activity company in Cornwall, before going to Indonesia to teach diving. Soon after returning to the UK, they made the move to south Lincolnshire, where they have been offering physiotherapy, gym and spa sessions for eleven years.

PENSIONS AND DIVORCE

Rather a dull topic you may think, and if you are a couple going through a divorce, but still many years away from retirement age, you may consider it irrelevant to your situation. But, even if you are only in your 40s and you have been married for a while, and either one of you has built up a pension fund during that period, it could turn out to be as valuable as the equity in the matrimonial home. For older couples, and especially those approaching retirement, pension funds can often be the major asset in a divorce.

You will probably all be aware of the changes brought in by the Government last year which allow many pension funds to be treated as pots of money, rather than savings that have to be invested to produce an annual income. These changes, within the necessary tax constraints, create greater flexibility for matrimonial settlements, but would still need to be ordered by the court, in a pension sharing annex to the main financial order.

All of this is complicated stuff, and you need expert advice from a family law specialist, who will also point you in the direction of appropriate financial advice as required. You cannot share pensions without a court order. Securing your financial future into retirement is crucial and attempting a DIY divorce in this context would be very unwise.

❱ THE TECHNOLOGY SITE BY TAFF LOVESEY, LITES PC

Many experts in the field of IT security are predicting that 2016 will be the worst year ever for scammers and hackers. Actually, as these activities increase year on year, you don’t really need a crystal ball to predict that. However, what is concerning is that the focus is changing and the types of attack are getting far more serious and far-reaching. Additionally, there has been a huge investment in developing skills for those intent on stealing information and undertaking computer fraud. Arguably, we also seem to be losing the battle to cyber terrorism, as the likes of organised crime and IS invest their time and finances into attacking our infrastructure. Since the start of the year, we have already witnessed successful attacks at the BBC, HSBC and Lincolnshire County Council, amongst others.

The good news is that much of this activity is towards attacking servers, rather than people’s home computers. The bad news is that online servers are not only at the heart of our infrastructure, but also hold all sorts of information about us and are often where we back up and store our data, as we turn more to the ‘cloud’-based solutions.

Over the next two months, I will look at the steps

that we, as home or small business IT users, should be taking to reduce our risk.

First and foremost is to ensure that you have multiple copies of all your data; from family photos, to household and business documents.

Local Backups: Ensure that you have at least one additional set of backups for all your data. There are many programs that can be used. I personally use Iperius Backup (www.iperiusbackup.co.uk) but Windows (8 and 10) includes an excellent utility in the form of Windows File History.

Offsite Backup: Make a second ‘offsite’ backup. One way to do this is to use one of the many cloud storage solutions. (e.g. Google Drive, Microsoft Onedrive, BT Cloud all of which at entry level offer free storage.)

Disconnected Backup: An increasing tactic used by criminals is ransomware. This infection will ‘encrypt’ your data, making it unreadable unless you purchase a ‘decryption’ key from the hackers. Sadly, these are getting more virulent and are not only attacking files on the infected system, but some can also search out network backup drives. Combat this by carrying out a backup of your data to a device that is disconnected from your network after completion.

Equity Release – Free that Cash but Take Advice First

For the majority of people, their property is their biggest asset, and older homeowners are turning to Equity Release, to enable them to release cash from their home, without having to move. Equity release enables you to get a sum to spend as you wish, or a regular income. It sounds like a great idea, and it can be, but you need to ensure you are aware of all the facts before you proceed.

The money you receive from an equity release will be tax-free, but any income received from investing the money may increase the amount of income tax you have to pay.

If you take out an equity release, and your circumstances change, for example, you get married or decide to live with a partner in your property, the plan may come to an end on your death, and your spouse or partner may no longer be able to remain in the house.

An equity release will reduce the size of your estate and your family’s inheritance, so it may be well worth talking to them about your plans.

When you consider taking out an equity release, you should think about the impact it may have on any benefits you are receiving; you also need to be aware that an equity release may affect future benefit entitlement.

Equity release is a big decision, which shouldn’t be taken lightly. It might not be the best or indeed the only solution available to you.

If you are considering equity release, then you should always get independent financial advice from a financial advisor, who specialises in equity release, and before signing up to an equity release plan you should speak to your solicitor.

Warning over a new scam targeting the elderly and vulnerablePHONE scamming is becoming more and more common – and a new menace facing the elderly and vulnerable is on the increase.

While many of us receive nuisance calls with offers to fix our computers or claiming we have won a holiday of a lifetime, this latest fraud targets a particular audience.

Police forces have become aware of some older people receiving telephone calls from a caller, claiming to be from their GP surgery, asking for an appointment to discuss the person’s mobility needs.

The calls are targeted because in many cases, it is believed that unscrupulous firms are buying databases containing details of patients and their medical / mobility needs.

Quite often they arrange to meet the person either in their own home or at a designated place – and will persuade them to buy mobility aids (which could include bath lifts, scooters or reclining chairs) at inflated prices. More often than not, these aids are unnecessary, inappropriate and always expensive.

We know of a couple of cases where a bogus caller persuaded a patient awaiting a knee operation to buy an adjustable chair for more than eight times the retail price.

In another instance, a patient with an already perfectly good, working, mobility scooter was tricked into buying another one – at more than four times the retail price.

Whilst some appointments are arranged as a home visit, with the sole reason to sell something – others are made off-site, to lure the person away from the house with the intention of burgling the property whilst they are ‘out of the way’.

The police in your area are aware of this latest scam, and information has also been circulated to all GP surgeries and the Clinical Commissioning Groups by the NHS.

Remember: Never deal with cold callers – however persuasive they are. If you receive a call of this nature, always check with your GP surgery before agreeing to a visit.

Likewise, any cold callers offering to carry out work on your property should be met with extreme caution.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Bourne & the surrounding villages and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

| A little bit of History

A range for military use was established on the Grimsthorpe estate and in 1890 it was made available to the Bourne Rifle Corps that had been formed two years before. It measured 500 yards wide, extending 900 yards in front of the canvas targets and 1¼ miles in the rear and such an excellent facility within a short distance of the town was a major boost to recruiting.

A decade later, there was an added impetus to rifle training for young men as a result of the Boer War of 1899-1902, in which many local lads went off to fight. The Countess of Ancaster therefore suggested that more men in civilian life ought to be trained to handle a rifle in case they were needed for military service.

A public meeting was called to form a Bourne Rifle Club to be affiliated to the National Rifle Association with the object of providing instruction and practice in the use of the service rifle, to encourage recruiting for the army and auxiliary forces and to act as a reserve for home defence.

An old granary adjoining the Bourne Institute at No 63 West Street [now the Pyramid Club] was found as premises and fund-raising was soon underway to adapt and equip the building as a miniature rifle range which was officially opened on Wednesday 28th May 1902 by the Earl of Ancaster who fired the first shot followed by Lady Ancaster who scored a bull’s eye.

The earl stressed the significance of such clubs. “It is of the utmost importance that every man should understand how to handle a rifle”, he said. “The nation will require a larger army in the future than it had in the past and I hope that sufficient volunteers will be forthcoming.”

His warning was ominous because the Great War began in 1914 and many of Bourne’s volunteers to fight in the trenches of Flanders and France had been trained to use a rifle at the range. It has been estimated that 250 men from Bourne saw active service and 134 did not return.

Discovering. . . Bourne rifle rangeThe ability to handle a rifle was thought to be necessary for young men during the 19th century because they would then be suitably qualified if they were needed to serve Queen and country. An opportunity for shooting practice was also regarded as an inducement to recruiting and rifle ranges were therefore popular and used by both army units and civilian clubs.

Help to Buy: ISA - Six things you might not knowIn today’s tough market place, it is extremely hard for first-time-buyers to realise the dream of owning their first home. That’s why the Government has introduced the Help to Buy: ISA, and several banks have committed toofferingitfromDecember1st2015.

As a first time buyer, you will be able to save a maximum of £200 a month in the Help to Buy: ISA, and the government will top this amount up by 25%, up to a maximum amount of £3,000.

The Help to Buy: ISA is available to each individual first-time-buyer. This means that if you and your partner are both first-time-buyers, then you can have two separate accounts. If you save the maximum amount, you would receive a government bonus of £6,000 towards your first home.

To kick-start your Help to Buy: ISA, in the first month you are allowed to deposit up to £1,200.

The minimum government bonus is £400, meaning that you will need to have saved at least £1,600 in your Help to Buy: ISA, before you can claim your bonus. The maximum bonus is £3,000. To receive the maximum amount, you need to have saved £12,000.

You can make as many deposits as you want during

a calendar month, as long as it doesn’t exceed £200. You can also take money out of your account if you need it, but your monthly allowance for deposits won’t change.

Your government bonus will be calculated, based on the amount of money you have in your account

when you close it. This includes both the money you have saved, and

any interest you have earned on that money. You can have more

than £12,000 in your account, but, you won’t receive a

government bonus of more than £3,000.

GREY SquIRRELS, A DILEMMA?

An x-ray confirmed this, as well as damage to his anterior lung fields .We could also see an additional four pellets in his body, showing he had been shot several times before. We treated him for shock and gave him antibiotics and pain killers .

We placed these pictures on our Facebook pages which were shared with over 35000 people! Most people’s reactions were ones of disgust that a creature should be shot and suffer in this way. However, some people view these animals as vermin, and believe that we should not treat them . Part of the problem is that, legally, they are classified as vermin and people are not allowed to keep them or release them into the wild without a licence . In areas where there are still red squirrels, there is some justification for controlling numbers in a humane manner. In areas where grey squirrels are already endemic and there are no reds, there is little justification for killing them . Indeed, in most parts, they are a recognisable part of our countryside.

I trained to become a vet to treat animals, not to kill them. All animals have a right to be treated unless their injuries are untreatable or if the animal is a danger to humans.

The squirrel has improved, but still has problems with his breathing . We have transferred him to Weirfield Wildlife Hospital in Lincoln (along with a good donation). They are licenced to keep and release a small number of grey squirrels each year, and we hope that our squirrel will recover and be released.

For more information, please contact the surgery on 01778 422863.

Last week, a grey squirrel was brought into our Bourne surgery. He had been found, looking dazed and shocked . When he was examined he had problems holding up his head ,a wound close to his left elbow and was breathing heavily. We were suspicious from his wound that he may have been shot with an air rifle.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings Ihavenowstartedanew(temporary)chapterinmylife, asa sergeant on the Neighbourhood Policing Team, to cover maternity leave for a colleague for a few months. I am really looking forward to the challenges that this new role will present, and also to add my own slant on how Lincolnshire Police engages with the community.

THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO CONTACT THE NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICING TEAM:

CALL: 101 (non-emergency) and ask for the Bourne and Billingborough Policing Team

WRITE: Bourne Police Station, West Street, Bourne PE10 9PD

E-MAIL: [email protected]

You can also follow the team on Facebook by searching Bourne and Billingborough, or follow on Twitter @BourneBboronpt

To report a crime, call 101 or 999 if in progress. Crimestoppers 0800 555 111

You can follow me on Twitter @Rick_Mosley

Every neighbourhood in Lincolnshire has a dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team. These teams are led by an inspector who may be responsible for several teams. Individual teams are led by a sergeant, with a police constable who is known as a community beat manager. The teams are also made up of police community support officers (PCSO), who play a vital role in being the main conduit between the public and the police. They face the public on a daily basis, tackling and preventing local, low-level crime, anti-social behaviour and any on-going concerns through working closely with partner agencies and community groups.

The benefit of Neighbourhood Policing is that the teams can focus all of their efforts on their dedicated neighbourhoods, building relationships with local people.

The team attend parish council meetings, as and when required. They will also attend panel meetings which are open to the public. These meetings are a chance for local residents to speak at the meeting to raise concerns. Finally, the team will attend joint agency meetings, when all relevant partner agencies meet to discuss issues and form a joint response to those issues.

Once local priorities have been identified, from whatever source, a broader ‘toolkit’ of problem-solving tactics is available to ensure crime and anti-social behaviour is tackled effectively. This response may not involve the police, but belong to one agency or a group of agencies.

Vehicle Breakdowns – Plan Ahead and Avoid Disasters

Intensive Driving Courses in Peterborough, Grantham, Spalding, Stamford, Boston and Sleaford Telephone free (inc. mobiles): 0800 689 4174

Welcome to the motoring section. At the time of writing, the temperature has dropped, and a strong bitterly wind is affecting us in Bourne, Deeping and the surrounding areas.Perhaps this is as good a time as any to consider good quality breakdown cover for your vehicle, especially if you have long journeys planned in your diary. Recently, members of my extended family discovered that the extent of their cover needed upgrading when a suspension failure caused a dramatic blow-out of a tyre on a motorway. The recovery service replaced the tyre, only for the new tyre to instantly puncture again, as soon as the car moved, as the damaged suspension ripped into the side of the tyre. A £100+ upgrade enabled the car to be lifted and taken to a destination of their choice. That experience, just to get off the hard shoulder of the motorway, took over four hours; the hard shoulder of a motorway is not where you want to be for any longer than is absolutely necessary, as vehicles on hard

shoulders do run the risk of getting completely wiped out.Another recent experience involved the journey back with my two boys from having watched the Posh match at West Bromwich Albion. Luckily, we had decided to take a convenience break at services on the motorway at 6pm, where a brake fault on one of the car’s wheels was discovered. This also resulted in a tow back home, and we eventually returned after 2am, the next morning! Both of those experiences involved reputable breakdown providers, AA and Green Flag. It just goes to show how important it is to consider getting cover, if you haven’t already, and think about the extent of the cover you want. As important as this, however, travel prepared – get emergency equipment in the boot, should problems occur on the journey. With the low temperatures and sometimes awful weather we have this time of year, you might be extremely relieved that you prepared properly.Wishing you safe driving.

I have been involved in the carpentry and joinery trade for over forty-six years now, the last twenty-six years being self-employed. I offer a comprehensive service, including not only carpentry and joinery, but also tiling, glazing, lock exchanges and maintenance. My skills also enable me to project-manage most building works. I work in close conjunction with other skilled trades, and can offer a full kitchen-fitting service, complete with free survey and design by a number of suppliers. I have access to joinery workshop facilities and thus can offer purpose-made items, such as wardrobes, fitted cupboards and bookcases etc.

ROSS M. KERRROSS M. KERR

Ross M. Kerr

catching my eye this month was the report of the unusual funeral of a former dinner lady, ethel Westover, at the Lancaster and Morecambe crematorium in mid-January. thanks to the imagination of a local funeral director, Darren abey, ethel’s family were able to grant her dying wish of making her final journey, not in the typical black limousine, but in a yellow reliant regal. it was a replica of the famous car driven by Del Boy trotter in the BBc sitcom, “only fools and horses”, with a yellow trailer which contains the coffin, and was supplied by Darren’s fleetwood firm, “only fools and hearses”!

The last two years have seen Darren taking this “lovely jubbly” type of send-off all around the U.K, as bereaved families seek something much lighter than usual. “The reaction from people is priceless,” he says. “It makes everyone laugh and smile. It’s always the

worse thing waiting for the hearse to arrive, but when we turn up, it turns it into a celebration of life. That’s what it is all about. Life’s too short.”

Maybe, there’s an opportunity for an ambitious entrepreneur around these parts to try something similar, to out-do even Del Boy. How about “I’m a Cadaver- Get me out of Here”, or just plain “Take Me Out”?

Dying to get to the match!A survey of 2,000 adults, and research among the Co-op’s 2,500 funeral directors in late 2015, showed a rise in a “destination funeral”, with services requested to be held in settings other than churches or crematoriums. These were many and varied, including by a lake or river; in the countryside; in their home, garden or street; and on the beach. Four percent even favoured a football ground!

Co-operative Funeralcare found that coffins have been transported by bus, motorcycle, Cadillac, tandem bicycle, as well as the more traditional horse-drawn carriage.

Sam Kershaw, operations director, said: “What we’re seeing is a culture shift in the way that we deal with loss. It’s becoming ever more common to hear people refer to funerals as a celebration of life. As arranging a funeral is the last thing we’ll do for a person, it’s incredibly important to feel able to create a truly unique and personal tribute to their life.”

“only fools and hearses” – Dying to get a Laugh!

| In the Hot Seat

The popular owner of “Concept” gift shop on North Street, Bourne, and mother of two grown-up children, Dena Edis, is in this month’s “Mother’s Day Hot Seat”. Early years as a dental nurse were followed by over five years with Hoppers jewellers, where Dena attained her Retail Jewellers Diploma. The big step into running her own business was taken and, with “Concept” now firmly established, Dena offers a much-needed range of quality gift items to the public. She loves gardening, making different things from old pallets, (which her partner cringes at, every time she brings one home!) and putting her own personal stamp on to her home. She also modestly adds “challenging myself – at times”. This has involved raising a large sum of sponsorship money, with a recent “wing-walk”, strapped to a bi-plane, and also hurtling down a zip-wire in North Wales and riding pillion on a high-powered motorbike around Donington Park!

1 WHERE WERE You boRN, ANd WHAT iS YouR FAvouRiTE MEMoRY oF YouR CHiLdHood?

I was born in Grantham, making me a true “Lincolnshire yellow belly” and we lived on North Road in Bourne, until I was two. We moved to Swaffham in Norfolk, and I fondly remember my Saturdays, going horse riding in the mornings and then to ballet in King’s Lynn in the afternoon. When I was twelve, we returned to live in Bourne.

2 WHo HAS HAd THE gREATEST iNFLuENCE oN YouR LiFE ANd WHY?

That has got to be my parents, who have moulded me into the person I am today, and my two grown-up children who continue to be a huge inspiration to me.

3 WHiCH TWo CHARACTERS, ALivE oR NoT, WouLd You MoST ENjoY SHARiNg A MEAL WiTH ANd WHY?

Stephen Fry, who I think has led such a varied and interesting life, and with such a great sense of humour. Along with Rod Stewart, also with plenty of varied life experiences to talk about, and a voice which I just adore!

4 HoW WouLd You dESCRibE YouRSELF iN oNLY FivE WoRdS?

Creative, Honest, Loyal, Friendly and Determined.

5 iF THERE WAS oNE THiNg WHiCH You CouLd CHANgE AbouT bouRNE, WHAT WouLd iT bE ANd WHY?

I would have North Street pedestrianised and the Thursday and Saturday market moved back on to it. Bourne used to be buzzing when the market used to be on the streets.

6 WHAT AdviCE WouLd You givE To A “SixTEEN-YEAR-oLd You”?

Never give up on your dreams, listen to what people tell you, but most of all – enjoy life!

DENA EDIS “Concept” owner and dare-devil fund-raiser
