These one day workshops are ideal for those wishing to learn to use their digital cameras more creatively, whilst photographing trains, stations, people and landscapes along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

The workshops are designed for photographers of all abilities, and so are offered at beginners’ and intermediate/advanced levels so that you can choose the course that best fits your skills and experience.

Led by professional landscape photographer, author and teacher John Potter, you will learn how to take good quality location and landscape images, as well as characterful portraits both at Pickering Station and along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

On all courses the morning is spent at Pickering Station, working both in the training room and on the station platforms. Beginner Course

These one day workshops are for those who want a good grounding in the basic principles of digital photography.

The morning is spent at Pickering Station, in both the training room and on the platforms, where you will be shown how to set up your cameras to take good quality photos of moving trains as well as how to edit and enhance your photos using both Photoshop Elements and Photoshop CS5. You will be shown how to use the more creative modes of your camera, so that you can take control of ISO settings, exposure, depth of field, white balance and shutter speeds, and you will be given expert guidance on composition.

After a light lunch you will travel to Goathland Station on our steam railway for landscape and location photography. At Goathland John will demonstrate the best techniques for making top quality landscape images. There will be a short, twenty minute walk across the moor to a viewing location for photographing steam trains passing through Darnholme, and there will be opportunities to photograph steam trains as they come and go at Goathland Station. John will also demonstrate how to photograph the small waterfall behind Goathland Station.

On returning to Pickering, there will be a short wrap-up session where John will process a few images from the day. There will be course notes to take away, and after the workshop John can offer e-mail feedback and support for your images taken during the workshop.

Intermediate/Advanced Level Courses

These one day workshops are for those who already have a reasonably good knowledge and understanding of their digital camera, together with a basic understanding of Adobe Photoshop or similar photo editing software.

The morning is spent at Pickering Station, in both the training room and on the platforms, where you will be given expert guidance on composition of both portraits and landscape images. You will be shown how to use the more creative modes of your camera, so that you can control ISO settings, exposure, depth of field and white balance, use of landscape filters, and fill flash for portraits. You will learn about white balance correction using a target in Photoshop, and how to set Custom White Balance for different lighting situations. In the morning session at Pickering you will learn how to use Photoshop Elements and Photoshop CS5 to edit and enhance your photos and photograph steam locomotives arriving at the station.

After a light lunch you will travel to Goathland on our steam railway for landscape and location photography.
