Creative souls must constantly create, and their mindsconstantly thirst for inspiration.
But in the world of floral design, as with many commercial endeavors, creativity is often restrained by the confines of mainstream salability.
Pablo Picasso once alluded to the dichotomy, saying, “The chief enemy of creativity is good sense.”
To stimulate your creativity and invigorate your mind, you must be able to view things in new ways or fromdifferent perspectives.
As Edward de Bono, a physician, inventor and author who is widely regarded as the world’s leading authority in the field of creative thinking, has stated, “Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.”

FLORISTS’ REVIEW
But to do that, you may have to throw practicality out the window.
And that is why Florists’ Review has produced this new publication, called Design Portfolio.
Today, few, if any, floral design resources are exclusivelydevoted to providing unfettered creative stimulation, and that, precisely, is the mission of this premiere issue, which was brought to life through a sponsorship from BloomNet.
BloomNet not only made possible the array of flowersshowcased in this edition but also contributed trend-forward containers from its subsidiary company, Napco.
And most importantly, BloomNet tapped the extraordi-nary floral artist Bill Taylor, AIFD Fellow, to lead the floraldesign phase of the project and collaborate with Florists’Review’s own design visionary, Talmage McLaurin, AIFD,and photographer John Collins (left and above left).
Within this inspirational magazine, you’ll discover cutting-edge and aspirational design concepts amalgamatedwith current trend stories, which were developed to inspire in-store displays and shop specials as well as to guide purchasing decisions.
We hope this Design Portfolio sparks a renewed enthusiasm for floral design and reawakens a desire to expand your creative horizon.

Carefree colors and colorpalettes, vibrant patterns, and adventurous compositionsjoin in a hopeful array that is unified by its youthful energy.Cheery Gerberas, which may be the flower of this generation, along with free-spirited pattern-on-pattern play, will capture the intrigue of the young andyoung at heart.
A happy grouping ofGerberas, loosely gath-ered into a traditional topiary design and then accessorized byadditional Gerberas atthe base, amplifies thecharm factor with Offray’s perky ribbon tied around its “trunk.”Spray chrysanthemumblossoms are adhered tothe center of the bowand Napco‘s daisy vasewith OASIS® UGlu™.
Surrounded by floral pat-terns, one of which is on aquilted weekend bagfrom burton + BURTON, an energetic collectionof blossoms is arrangedpavé style in a Napcobowl. The mixed printsand radiant floral huesare guaranteed to ban-ish gloom.

Colorful mismatchedprints are unified by thespunky arrangements ofGerberas in butterfly budvases from Napco.
(above left) Jaunty flowerplacements and an arch-ing Gerbera stem, woventhrough the upright stems, form a modern “trellis”with all the joyful exuber-ance of youth. The brighthue of Napco’s containeradds even more viva-cious charm.
Classic toile and bold floral prints become acomplex pairing that issubdued by white con-tainers—an owl from burton + BURTON and a textured pot fromScheurich Pottery—and a monochromatic gath-ering of Gerberas.

The soothing sounds of waves gently rolling onto beachesare often interpreted in home décor and accessories with calming, sandy neutralsquietly accented by pale watery blues. But the beach is for more than just relaxation; it’s a place for splashing, surfing and other frivolity, and today’s seaside-inspired palettes reference the fun factor with amped-up color values culled from sparkling reefs and the deep blue sea. Shells, driftwood and other briny bling ensure that the moderncoastal collection remains totally tidal.
With a bit of Asian flair, thisarrangement of fresh-cutPhalaenopsis orchids, in adish garden from Napco, speaks of tropical seas. The permanent staghornfern from Sullivans can be shaped into a sculp-tural depiction of kelp or seaweed swaying withthe tide.
Metallic gray vases fromNapco, with their abstractshapes, seem to reflectthe ebb and flow of thetide. The molten vesselsare filled lavishly withfoamy mounds of DavidAustin’s ‘Miranda’ roses, peonies and carnations.Shells are scattered ran-domly, as if they havewashed upon the shore.

Sinuata statice, alsoknown as sea lavender, isoften used as a filler, buthere, it’s upgraded to aplace of prominence asa feature flower and accented by leavesclipped from a Cycla-men plant. The statice’stexture and shape arereminiscent of coral formations, and the sea-shell vases, from burton + BURTON, complete thecoastal creations.
Fern fronds, colorful fo-liages and a fresh Echev-eria bring aquatic shapesand patterns into a lushgathering of gardenyblooms. The crisscrossingdriftwood container fromBaisch & Skinner con-trasts with the romanticfloral assortment.

An “ocean spray” ofcallas splashes from thedepths of a florid moundarranged into a drift-wood vessel from JamaliFloral & Garden Supplies. The vase and its com-panion orb are createdfrom bits of driftwood that are artistically se-cured together.

Vintage and new maps, stamps from faraway landsand intriguing finds from exotic locales suggest
worldly travels by jetsetters who are connoisseurs of global fare. But for those with an immutable
migratory instinct, where no maps are required, the world is less about exploration than it is about
completing a journey. So, for all types of world travelers, this theme celebrates the trip and
the destination, relishing in what can be discovered along the way.
Exotic blossoms that hailfrom multiple ports of call are collected into a ceramic planter fromNapco and placedupon an Asian-influ-enced stand to add tothe worldly flavor. Maps, books and additionalceramic vases fromNapco contribute to theglobal market concept.
World travelers are fortu-nate to sample vintner’sfare from around theglobe, and this gatheringraises a glass to red wine. The burgundy-hued flo-rals, including the luscious‘Minerva’ carnations, reflect the hues of thewinemaker’s harvest whiled.stevens llc‘s ribbon, printed with wine varietalsand regions, continuesthe theme. This showy Phalaenopsisorchid is displayed, in a ceramic bowl fromNapco, as a rare speci-men discovered on trav-els to tropical destinations.Groups of fresh blossoms, including fragrant ‘CoolWater’ roses, accessorizethe plant at its base.Botanical prints, oversizedsugar pine cones fromColumbia Pine Cones & Botanicals and a fish pitcher from burton + BURTON demonstrate the harmony of mean-ingful finds.
Starting with their transfor-mation from caterpillar toflying insect and culminat-ing in their migratory journey, where, along theway, they are admired fortheir intricate patternsand colors, butterflies areamong the world’s mostintriguing travelers. Whileit’s common to displaythe nectar-seeking insectsalighting on blossoms, theribbon from d.stevens llccreates the illusion of insects on the move. Onthe pot from Napco, more butterflies appearto flutter below the Leu-cospermum collection.
The Napco pot cover, which reminds of a mem-ory book with its motif, showcases several bluebutterflies. When theircaptivating color is re-peated using flutteringversions from Regency International, the paleblossoms between themgain extra prominence.

At retail locations of every type and size, birds are landing in flocks everywhere. From motifs to statuary, and everything in between, the winged creatures, as wellas their eggs and various accouterments, are capturing consumers’ interest. These always-popular floral accents have now gone mainstream.
Arranged into the cylin-der of a double vasefrom burton + BURTON,fresh flowers, foliagesand feathers are sur-rounded by decorativeeggs, which are placedbetween the two layersof glass.
A nested set of traysfrom Napco is ideal forstacking and accessoriz-ing with gardeny florals.A pair of glossy birds, also from Napco, haveset up house in thetiered structure.

Inspired by a continually growing interest in minimizedcarbon footprints and environmental protections, consumers clamor for all things “green.” The hue itself,in various tints, tones and shades, reflects the natural, organic aspects of the ecocentric setting while recycled, repurposed and sustainable materials are reflected by the chosen containers and accessories. In the past, these environmentally friendly items had to look the part, so consumers felt confident in their choices. Today, however, eco-awareness partners seamlessly with chic style.
Fresh fruits, attached to wood picks, mingleamong the verdant gath-ering of flowers and foliage. A raffia table run-ner and place mats fromJamali Floral & GardenSupplies provide a bu-colic texture that partnersnaturally with Napco‘sdish garden planter.
Fresh Hypericum berriesand blades of grass combine with Regency International’s realisticpermanent Echeverias, which can be reusedmultiple times. They’rearranged into a sleek ceramic vessel from Jamali Floral & GardenSupplies along with Jamali’s grassy andwoody orbs. The pot receives a textural en-hancement from ReliantRibbon’s green fiberband. A brown version, placed nearby, repeatsthe woody tones.
