Design Log:
tool
A place to gather insights& work on ideas.* Keep it close: Jot down thoughts & sketches as they come. * Be Generative: Be prolic & don’t censor yourself. Get it all on the page.* Be Visual: Tend toward diagrams & sketches rather than text. * Be Reective: Periodically revisit your work to cull out your good ideas.

Saturate: Tune your instincts
Immerse yourself in the domain you are exploring in order to understand the state of the art, gain empathy for users, & inspire new ways to frame the problem.
The fruits of Saturation are insights: your interpre-tation of observations & compelling stories. Follow your curiosity and look for: recurring patterns, anomalies / extreme cases, or novel / surprising anecdotes.
Jot down your 3 strongest insights & note why you think they have potential.
Circle the insight that you are going to pursue. Note how you came to this insight (user interview, etc.)

Synthesize: Dene a Point of View
Dig deeper and sort through your insights to uncover the essence of the design prob-lem and formulate a unique perspective that will guide your solutions. Think about how you can re-frame the design challenge in a unique way around a particular user, need, &/or insight that has not been explored by others.
The takeaway from Synthesis is your Point of View: A unique denition of the design problem that highlights an insight is grounded in a user need, and can be used to inspire novel solutions.

Realize: Express - Test - Cycle
Realization relies on a quick and dirty cre-ative process of generating multiple possi-bilities quickly (express), trying out ideas (test), incorporating your learnings into a new iteration of your design and doing it again (cycle).
Realization is many activities rolled into one:Ideation: go for volume rst / critique at the endPrototyping: build to think -- what can you do to learn what you need to know to progress?Test & Iterate: try your ideas out early, make changes quicklyImplementation: Know when to move into technical and business challenges.
Quickly explore 3 ways to realize your paper prototype in digital form. Use your notebook to map out how each might work.
Decide on a single direction to pursue and circle it.
Take a moment at the end of the cycle to note how many dierent iterations you explored during this process
