Environmental management in Malaysia become morefocused with the gazzetment of the Environmental Quality Act(EQA) on 14 March 1974.
From thereon, an enforcement agency named Environment
Division (known as Department of Environment (DOE) in 1983)was institutionalized in 1975.
Presently, the Department is empowered with 1568 staffs (onfull operation), extending its operation through 15 StatesOffices and 26 Branch Offices.
The Departments main role is to prevent, control and abatepollution through the enforcement of the EQA,1974 and its 34subsidiary legislation made there under.

The air quality in Malaysia is described in terms of AirPollutant Index (API).
The API is an indicator of air quality and was developedbased on scientific assessment to indicate in an easily
understood manner, the presence of pollutants and itsimpact on health.
The API system of Malaysia closely follows the PollutantStandard Index (PSI) developed by the United States
Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA).
